She waited until Sunday evening to listen to the tape properly.
This was deliberate. She had found it on Tuesday, heard it in fragments, understood what it was. But listening to it as a thing to sit with — rather than a thing to show someone else — required a different kind of preparation. She needed to be alone, the shop closed, no machines running. She needed the evening quiet that Fuyunagi made available without effort.
She set the cassette player on the desk. Adjusted the volume. Put in the tape.
The old host's voice. The intro she had heard before. Then the segment break. Then the tapes from the earlier years, the ones that were just readings — letters about lost things, about finding oneself in unexpected places, about the specific bravery of ordinary decisions. She had heard some of these. She let herself hear them again, properly, as what they were.
She was listening for the one she'd identified before — the letter Itsuki had read eighteen months ago, the one she'd heard only through the archive, about a studio by the sea.
It took four episodes to find it. She sat at the desk with the player running and processed nothing — just listened. The spring evening came through the cracked window, the harbor sounds, the wind chime.
And then she found it.
---
She knew from the first sentence.
Not the words — the rhythm. Mio's particular rhythm, the way she constructed sentences. Short. Then longer. Then a pivot. Koharu had read enough of Mio's texts, her notes, her handwritten labels on fabric swatches, to know the pattern immediately.
*"I want to tell you something I haven't been able to say out loud."*
She went still.
*"I have a best friend. She's the kind of person who knows how to take care of things — not in a controlling way, in the way of someone who sees what something needs and does it. She's been doing that for years and I don't think she knows that's what she is."*
The tape ran.
*"We have this dream, her and I. Or — I have this dream. I don't know if she knows yet that it's her dream too. We talk about opening a studio near the sea. A place for making things. We've talked about it like a joke, the way you talk about things that feel too big to want seriously."*
Koharu's hands were on the desk, very flat, very still.
*"I'm writing this because I need to say it to someone, even someone I can't see. The dream is real. I want it. And I think she wants it too, but neither of us has said it properly, and I keep waiting for the right moment and the right moment keeps not coming."*
A pause. She could hear, in the tape, the way Itsuki had paused when he read it — the same pause she had heard when she'd listened to this episode months ago, thinking: something in how he reads this is different.
*"I haven't told her yet that I want this."*
And then the voice continued — not Mio's recorded voice, but Itsuki's, reading it. Reading Mio's words carefully and precisely. Eighteen months ago, before he knew Koharu existed, before she had come to Fuyunagi, before any of it — he had read these words and they had meant something to him because he could hear in them someone who was afraid to want something real.
And then Mio had died. And Koharu had come here. And the words had been waiting in the archive, held carefully in her grandmother's labeled tapes, for the moment when they could be heard by the right person.
---
She sat at the desk for a long time after the tape ended.
The shop was very quiet. The machines were off. The wind chime moved. Through the window, the harbor was going dark in the spring evening.
She was not surprised — she had known this moment was coming, had been building toward it since the dinner, since she had told him about Mio's letter. But knowing something is coming and arriving at it were different things. The arrival had its own weight.
She thought about Mio. About the thin winter afternoon in the Nakameguro apartment. About Mio lying on the floor with her reference photos, finding this podcast and sending it to Koharu like a small gift. About the letter Mio had written and sent, two months later, and then Mio had died before she could say out loud what she'd put in the letter.
She thought: Mio told a stranger what she couldn't yet tell me. And the stranger read it carefully. And the stranger is now twenty feet away.
She thought: that's an extraordinary chain of small things. None of them dramatic. Just — things following from other things, care following from care.
She did not knock on the wall. She did not send a note through the hatchway. She just sat with it, in the quiet shop, with the tape in the cassette player and the spring evening coming in through the window.
She thought about what to do with this. Whether it needed doing anything with. Whether some things were just true and didn't need action.
She decided: yes. Some things were just true.
She had found the tape. She had heard Mio's words in Itsuki's voice, eighteen months ago and again now. She had understood the chain of it. She had sat with it.
That was enough. For tonight, that was enough.
---
She opened the drawer.
She took out the piece of notepaper she had written on Friday — the short story version. I was in a city that had become too full of someone I had lost. I came to a small town. I stayed.
She read it. Then she turned it over and wrote on the back: Mio sent me here in more ways than one. The letter she sent. The podcast she found. The dream she had and didn't say out loud until she did.
She folded it. Put it back.
Then she got out a fresh piece of notepaper. She wrote: The tape with Mio's letter. I listened to it tonight, alone. I wanted to tell you. I don't need a response — I just needed to say: I heard her. In your voice, from a year and a half ago. You read her carefully. Thank you.
She put it through the hatchway.
She went upstairs.
She made tea. Sat at the kitchen window. Watched the harbor go dark.
His reply came through the hatchway eventually — she heard the small wooden sound of it opening and closing. She went down.
The note said: I remember that letter. I remember stopping before the last sentence because I knew it was the whole thing. I'm glad she sent it. I'm glad you found it.
She stood at the hatchway with the note.
She wrote: Me too.
She went back upstairs.
She put her earbuds in at ten. He was reading letters about finding things you didn't know you were looking for. She listened and thought about Mio, who had found the podcast on a thin winter afternoon and hadn't known yet what she was finding. Who had sent a letter and hadn't known what it would become.
She thought: we don't know what the things we send out will become. We just send them carefully and trust the care to carry them somewhere.
She went to bed.
The spring moved the wind chime.
Mio's words were in a tape in a box on a shelf in a laundry shop in a small town that Koharu had come to for one season and decided to keep.
Everything was exactly where it was supposed to be.
---
She did not tell Itsuki what she had heard in detail. She did not describe to him the specific sentences of Mio's letter, the rhythm she had recognized, the particular way the words had landed. She had said thank you and he had said I'm glad. That was the conversation, and it was complete.
This surprised her slightly — she had expected to need more than that. But the note through the hatchway had been enough. Some things were exchangeable in a very small space.
Monday she opened the shop and the first customer was the marine biology student Emiko, back from her first week of field surveys with the eager exhausted energy of someone who had been outdoors for seven days.
"Gear needs a proper wash," she said, setting down the bag. "Everything. The salt gets into things."
"Two days," Koharu said. "Most of it cold wash."
"Thank you." Emiko looked at the window. "The flowers are new."
"Weekly. They come on Saturdays."
Emiko had the particular expression she used when she was not commenting on something. "Right," she said. "Saturdays. Very convenient."
She left. Koharu went back to the intake.
---
Tuesday Nao came for his sweaters and said, without being asked: "He's been different this week."
"Different how?"
"Lighter." Nao took his ticket. "Since the tape you found. He came up from your shop last Sunday with — I don't know. Like something had settled. He made coffee and went straight to work on the festival episode and didn't come out for three hours."
Koharu said nothing.
"I'm not telling you anything specific," Nao said.
"I know."
"Good." He pocketed his ticket. "Just — whatever that tape was, it helped. So. Thank you."
He left. She stood at the counter.
She thought about what Nao had said. Something settling. She knew that feeling — the specific shift when a thing that had been in motion finally landed in the right place. She had felt it when she signed the paperwork. When she heard the tape. When she wrote the note and he replied.
Things were settling. For both of them. Not into completion — into a readiness for whatever came next.
The festival was next week. The spring was fully here. The bulbs were open and the flowers were in the window and the archive tape was in its place and the hatchway had worn a groove in its hinge from opening and closing.
She thought: we are almost ready. I don't know for what, exactly. But for something.
She was learning to trust that.
---
Wednesday she did the prep for the festival table.
Not elaborate prep — she had taken Riko's advice and Mrs. Ogawa's advice and the advice from the tape about the woman who had come back. She knew what the table needed to be: a place where people could bring their questions and receive one careful answer. Where they could sit down if they needed to. Where there would be tea.
She found her grandmother's small tea set in the back room — four cups, a pot, a wooden tray. She cleaned them. Set them on the shelf.
She made a small sign for the table: Mizuse Laundry — cleaning advice and tea. She had Riko make a flower arrangement for the table that was specifically not fussy: three stems, simple, the same kind of thing her grandmother had put in the shop for thirty years.
She thought about what she would say to people who came. She thought about the three-part question: what is it, what is it on, how long has it been there. She thought about Riko's addition: sometimes they're not really asking about the stain.
She thought: I know something about that. About saying one thing and meaning another. About bringing the thing you can put into words because the thing you actually need to say doesn't have words yet.
She would be at the table. She would make tea. She would listen.
That was what the table was for.
---
Thursday she found a note from Itsuki that was longer than usual.
He had slipped it under the shop door rather than through the hatchway, which meant he had written it somewhere else and brought it over. It said: I've been thinking about what to ask you at the festival. I don't want to ask the wrong questions. I don't want to ask the questions that would make a good episode rather than the ones that are true to what you actually want to say. So I'm asking now, outside the recording: what do you want people to hear?
She read it twice.
Then she went to the desk and thought about it for a while. Not constructing a performance — genuinely thinking. What did she want people to hear?
She wrote: I want them to hear that the first letter is not the whole story. That there's an after. That you don't have to know what the after looks like to trust it's there.
She looked at that. Then added: I want them to hear that the things that hold you up in the hard part are often very small. A shop that smells right. A voice at ten o'clock. Yellow flowers on a Saturday. Small things are not a consolation prize. They're the actual structure.
She read both paragraphs.
Then she wrote: You can ask me anything. I trust you to ask the right ones.
She put the note through the hatchway.
His reply came within the hour: Thank you. I won't ask more than what's needed. And I'll tell you afterward if I think we got it right.
She held the note.
She thought: I trust you. I wrote that and I meant it. I trust him to ask the right questions and hold the answers carefully.
She thought: that took a long time to get to. And also — it didn't. It just took the right conditions.
She went back to work.
The machines ran. The spring moved through the window. The festival was six days away.
She thought she was ready.
She thought that was enough.
---
Friday she cleaned the shop thoroughly.
Not because it needed it — she kept it clean, that was the point, that was the job. But the kind of cleaning that was also a kind of preparation. She went through each machine, checked each seal and seal, ran empty cycles with cleaning solution. She reorganized the shelf above the dryers. She wiped down the folding table and the counter and the window ledge where the flowers sat.
She was preparing a space. The festival was in five days. The table would be set up in the town square, not in the shop — but the shop needed to feel ready too. It was her home base. It needed to feel like what it was.
By the time she finished, the shop had the particular quality she associated with her grandmother's description: attended. Someone had been here, caring for things. Someone was still here.
She went to the window. Looked at the arrangement — the bulbs fully open now, bright yellow, the chrysanthemums still holding, the succulent her grandmother had planted, the new blue vase, the flowers from Saturday.
She thought: this is mine. Not just the paperwork. The smell and the light and the machines and the window full of things and the drawer full of notes and the archive on the shelf with the tape labeled the one who came back.
She thought: I came back. In a different sense — I came back to myself. To the version of me that knew how to want things.
She wrote in the ledger: April, almost festival. The shop is ready. I think I am too.
She closed the ledger.
Outside, the spring evening was warm enough that she left the window open when she went upstairs.
The wind chime moved in the spring air all night, saying something she understood.
She slept well.
She always slept well now.
---
Saturday morning he arrived with the flowers before eight.
She heard the side door, then footsteps on the pavement, then the small sound of something being set on her doorstep. She went down and found the yellow flowers and a note: early today. There was something I needed to say before the market.
She unfolded the note. It said: I think the festival conversation is going to be good. Not because I'll make it good — because you already know what you want to say, and I just need to make the space for you to say it. I wanted to tell you that before the day gets busy.
She stood in the early morning with the flowers in her hand.
She thought: he knows me well enough to know when I need to hear something before the day gets busy.
She wrote back: Thank you. I think so too.
She put the flowers in water. Made coffee. Opened the shop.
The Saturday morning market started below. The spring was fully present — warm enough for a lighter coat, the harbor a shade of blue she hadn't seen before this season, the kind of blue that was almost summer.
She was almost ready.
In five days she would sit across from a microphone and say: I'm here. I made it to here.
And she would mean it.
And it would be true.
She stood at the window for a long time before opening. Looked at the harbor, the blue of it, the boats.
She thought about all the ways a thing could find its way to the right person. Mio finding the podcast. Mio sending a letter. Her grandmother keeping the tape. The hatchway. The generator. The yellow flowers.
A chain of small care. Each link held by someone who didn't know what the chain was for.
She was a link in it now. She had been for a while.
She opened the shop.
Machine number three started on the first try.
The spring came in through the cracked window and smelled like the harbor and the flowers and something that was almost but not quite summer.
She went to work.
You've reached the end of this chapter
She waited until Sunday evening to listen to the tape properly.
