He came back on Sunday, as promised.
She knew because she heard his door — the particular sound of the building next door's side entrance, which she had learned the way she had learned the machines' sounds, by hearing it enough times in enough moods. This one was the Sunday-afternoon sound: slightly heavier than usual, the sound of someone who had been somewhere and was now returning.
She was in the shop doing the Sunday things she had invented for herself over the months — not necessary maintenance exactly, but the kind of attention the shop liked on its day off. She did not go to the window. She gave it the ten minutes it took for someone to come home and put their bag down and realize they were home.
Then she went to the hatchway. Opened it. Sent through: Welcome back.
His reply came quickly: Thank you. Can I come over?
She wrote: Yes.
---
He came through the side door twenty minutes later. She had put the kettle on.
He looked — not different, but processed. The way people looked when they had been somewhere significant and had not yet integrated it.
He sat at the kitchen table. She made tea. Sat across from him.
He said: "Tokyo is Tokyo."
She waited.
"It hasn't changed," he said. "That's not the thing I thought it was. I thought if I went back and it hadn't changed then I had — I don't know. Stayed smaller than it. But it's just Tokyo. It's enormous and indifferent and full of everything."
She thought about her own return to Tokyo in imagination — how the city had become the place she had to leave, how she had thought about it as something she'd grown out of or been expelled from. She thought about what he was describing: that it was simply a place. Just a place.
"And the meeting?" she said.
"Good," he said. "The producer is serious. The project is interesting. The syndication deal would change the show — I knew that going in and it's true." He paused. "But it would also reach people who are sitting alone in cities at ten o'clock. More of them. Which is the point."
She held her cup.
"So?" she said.
"So I said I needed to think," he said. "Which I do. I told them I'd give an answer in a month." He looked at his tea. "I came back on the train and I thought about it the whole way and I still don't know."
She said: "That's honest."
"It's frustrating."
"Honest and frustrating are not mutually exclusive." She paused. "What did going to Tokyo tell you?"
He thought about it. "That I can be there. That it doesn't feel like the person I was trying not to be — or at least not exclusively. It felt like a place where things are made." He looked at the window. "And it felt like somewhere I'd left. Both at once."
She said: "That sounds accurate."
"It is." He was quiet. "I thought seeing it would make it clearer. It made it more complex."
"More complex is usually more accurate," she said.
He looked at her. "You're not going to tell me what to decide."
"No."
"I know. I keep expecting you to."
"I know you do." She set down her cup. "You're not going to figure this out tonight. You just got back. Give it a week."
He nodded slowly. "A week."
"You don't have to decide before you know what you want."
"That feels like a very long time to not know."
"You've been not-knowing for two years," she said. "One more week is fine."
He was quiet for a moment. Then, unexpectedly: "I missed the shop."
She looked at him.
"The sound of it," he said. "From next door. I could hear it through the wall in Tokyo — not literally. But I kept orienting myself by where it would be." He paused. "It's been there all year. I didn't know how much I noticed it until I was somewhere it wasn't."
She thought about that. About the shop's sounds being part of his orientation. About the specific way two places could share a wall and one could become the other's north.
She said: "The shop missed you too."
He looked at her.
"It's quieter on the other side," she said. "When there's no one in the recording space." She paused. "The acoustic signature changes."
He said: "You can hear that?"
"I've been listening to this building for seven months."
He looked at her with the actual expression — the paying-attention one.
"Seven months," he said.
"Almost."
He was quiet.
She said: "You came back. That's the thing. Whatever Tokyo is — you came back."
He said: "I came back."
She said: "So start there."
---
They sat in the kitchen for another hour. He talked about the meeting in more detail — the specific project, what it would involve, what would have to change about the program and what could stay. She listened and asked questions and did not direct.
By the end of the hour she thought he was closer to knowing. Not there — but the week she had given him might do it.
He left when the summer evening had gone properly dark. She stood at the side window and watched him go into his building, the light in his recording space coming on.
She thought: he is home. He went somewhere and came back and now he is home.
She thought about that word — home — and what it required. Not birthplace, not history, not even the longest time spent somewhere. Just: the place you orient by. The place you can hear through the wall even when you're somewhere else.
She wrote in the ledger margin: August. He went to Tokyo and came back. He said he missed the sound of the shop. I said the shop missed him too. Both true.
She closed the ledger.
The summer night was warm. The harbor was dark. The wind chime moved in the night air.
She thought: this is the end of summer, nearly. Autumn is coming. The leaves will change and Hana will visit and the light will go. And after autumn, the second winter.
She thought: I will know all four seasons of this place before the year is done. I will know what it requires of me in each one. I will know which kindnesses belong to which time.
She thought: that's the full year. That's belonging somewhere.
She was almost there.
One more season.
She went to bed.
The summer night held her with the particular warmth of the end of a season that had been good — the fireflies and the coast road and the plum tree and the flowers and the hatchway notes filling up the summer drawer.
She thought about what autumn would bring.
She thought: whatever it is, I'll be ready.
She thought: I know how to be ready now.
She slept.
Machine number three ran its Sunday evening cycle — the last of the day, the one that finished just before eleven, the sound she had learned to hear as the shop settling in for the night.
The sound of a place that knew what it was.
The sound of home.
---
Monday he gave her his answer about the syndication deal.
Not to her — she had not asked. He gave it through the hatchway, a note that said: I said yes to the syndication. With conditions. The format stays mine. The late-night slot stays. The letters stay anonymous. They can distribute it; they can't change what it is.
She read it. Put it in the summer drawer.
Sent back through the hatchway: Those are the right conditions.
He wrote: I know. It took me a week and going to Tokyo to figure out what I already knew.
She wrote: That's usually how it works.
He wrote: You're very irritating when you're right.
She wrote: I know. It says so on the note.
He sent back the most minimal possible sketch of a person looking resigned.
She folded it and put it in the drawer with the others.
She thought: he said yes with conditions. He kept the thing that made it what it was. That is wisdom — knowing which parts were the essential ones and protecting them while accepting that other parts could change.
She thought about the shop. About what she had kept and what she had changed since taking it over. The machines stayed, the smell stayed, the bench stayed, the attention stayed. The flower arrangements changed. The folding table got moved for the heat. The layout adapted to seasons.
The essential parts stayed. The rest adapted.
She thought: that's the principle. Know which parts are essential. Keep those. Let the rest move.
She went back to work.
---
The last week of August had the particular quality of the end of a season — still warm, but with something underneath the warmth. A different quality to the light. The afternoons going golden earlier. The harbor, which had been its deep summer blue all month, beginning to shift toward a more complex color.
She noticed all of this from the shop window.
She had learned to read the harbor as a seasonal indicator. In seven months she had seen it in every configuration and she knew what each configuration meant: what was coming, what was passing, where in the year she was.
August was almost over. Autumn was close.
She thought: my first autumn in Fuyunagi. I have been looking forward to this. Hana visiting, the leaves on Akari-dori, the light that would be different, the particular beauty of a harbor town in autumn that she had not seen yet but had been told about.
She was ready for it.
She had been ready for the next thing all year, which was its own kind of healing — not the healing that made you stop wanting things, but the healing that made you want them without fear.
---
Thursday Riko came with the end-of-August flowers — transitional things, she explained, between summer and autumn. Not quite either. Things that bridged.
"Bridge flowers," Koharu said.
"Exactly." Riko arranged them with the practiced precision she always used for things that required judgment. "This arrangement says: something is ending and something is beginning, and both are fine."
Koharu looked at it.
She thought: yes. That's exactly right. Something is ending and something is beginning and both are fine.
She said: "Leave me the shop arrangement but different from summer."
Riko looked at her. Then nodded. "I know what you want." She adjusted, changed one color, moved a stem. "There."
Koharu looked at the new arrangement. Different from summer. Not quite autumn. The exact right in-between.
"Thank you," she said.
"Your grandmother liked the transitional arrangements best," Riko said, picking up her box. "She said they were the most honest." She paused at the door. "The most honest arrangements are the ones that don't pretend to be something they're not yet."
She left. Koharu stood with the arrangement.
She thought about honesty. About the specific courage of saying: I am in transition. I am not where I was and not yet where I am going and that is the truth of this moment.
She thought: I have been honest about that all year. And the honesty had made it possible to move.
She wrote in the ledger: End of August. Bridge flowers. Something ending, something beginning. Both fine.
She looked at it. Added: I am ready for autumn.
She closed the ledger.
The machines ran. The harbor shifted toward its autumn color. The wind chime moved.
It said: yes. One more season. Then you'll know it all.
She thought: yes. One more.
She was ready.
---
Friday she organized all four drawers.
The winter drawer, which was full — forty-three notes, the photograph of her grandmother, the recipe card, the USB drive with the music. The spring drawer, which was also full — thirty-one notes, the festival materials, the signed paperwork receipt. The summer drawer, which was nearly full — the firefly nights, the flowers, the Tokyo departure note, the syndication decision. The fourth small box, which had started as an overflow and become the place for things that didn't fit the season categories — the two pieces of paper from February, the Mio archive tape label she had copied down, other things that belonged to no particular season but to all of them.
She looked at all four arranged on the desk.
Seven months of accumulated small significances.
She thought: my grandmother kept her significant things in a box on a shelf. I keep mine in drawers on the desk. Different containers, same impulse — to hold carefully the things that matter, so they can be found when you need them.
She thought: when I'm old and someone comes to sort through the shop, they will find these drawers and they will understand something about what this year was.
She thought: that's a good thing to leave behind. Evidence of a year that was lived carefully.
She closed all four drawers. Lined them up neat on the desk.
She went upstairs. Made dinner. Called Hana.
"September," she said, when Hana answered. "Come in September when the harbor is beautiful."
"When in September?" Hana said.
"Whenever you can. The shop can manage without me for a day if I need to show you around."
Hana was quiet for a moment. "You sound different," she said. "Good different."
"I know," Koharu said. "I feel different."
"The summer was good?"
"Very good." She thought about the fireflies and the plum tree and the hatchway notes and the Tokyo trip and the syndication decision and the drawers full of things. "A full summer."
"Tell me everything when I get there," Hana said.
"I will." She paused. "Bring a light jacket. September evenings are cool here."
"Noted." A pause. "Ko. I love you."
"I love you too," she said. "Get on a train."
She hung up. Stood at the kitchen window.
The summer evening outside was the last of the kind she would have this year. Tomorrow would be September. The bridge would tip toward autumn. The light would begin its long change.
She was ready.
She thought about the year. Eight months — not quite a year, but all four seasons: the winter she had arrived in, the spring she had bloomed in, the summer she had lived in fully. And now autumn coming.
She thought: I will know this place completely by the time it comes back to winter. I will have the full four-season knowledge. That's the work of a year. That's what staying looks like.
She thought about Mio, who had found her this place before she knew she needed it. Who had sent her here in more ways than one. Who would have been here in person if things had been different, which they were not, which was not fine and also not something she was going to spend the rest of her life unable to hold.
She thought: Mio, look. The drawers are full. The shop is mine. The harbor is beautiful. The person next door went to Tokyo and came back. Autumn is coming. Hana is coming. I am going to know this place in all four seasons.
The wind chime moved.
She thought: I think you'd be pleased.
She thought: I think you are.
She went to bed.
The last summer night of the year was warm and long, the harbor below still the deep blue of August, the wind chime saying things she had learned to trust.
It said: yes. One more season. Then you'll have it all.
She thought: yes.
She thought: I'm ready for it.
She was.
---
Saturday morning he brought the flowers, as always.
The last Saturday of August, which meant the last Saturday of summer, which meant the yellow flowers were a bridge-season thing — the same yellow she had been receiving since March, but in the late-summer light they looked different. More golden. Heavier with the season.
She put them in the window.
He said: "September next week."
She said: "I know."
He said: "The firefly season ends."
She said: "I know. We'll go one more time."
He nodded. Looked at the window. "What do you want to do in autumn?"
She thought about it. "Walk Akari-dori when the leaves turn. Go to the harbor walk when the light is good. Learn what the shop needs in autumn." She paused. "Show Hana around."
"When is she coming?"
"September. We haven't fixed the date."
He nodded. "Tell me when. I'll make sure I'm around."
She looked at him. "You don't have to."
"I want to," he said. "She's your sister. I'd like to meet her."
She thought about that. About the casual confidence of someone who assumed they would be there for the things that mattered. About what it meant to be with someone who planned ahead without drama.
She said: "I'll let you know."
He nodded. Left for the market.
She stood in the shop with the end-of-August flowers in the window and the four drawers on the desk and the harbor going its transitional color in the morning light.
She thought: this is what the end of a season looks like. Not loss — transition. The flowers are still here. The shop is still here. The person is still here. Everything continues; it just continues differently.
She thought: I have learned this. I have learned it here, in this shop, in this year.
She thought: that's the whole year right there. Learning that things continue differently, and that differently is not worse.
She opened the shop.
Machine number three started on the first try.
Summer was almost over.
She was here for the last of it.
And she would be here for what came next.
You've reached the end of this chapter
