The news segment ran for three minutes and forty seconds.
Mina watched it on the cafeteria television at 18:30, standing with a tray she was not eating from, because she had come down for dinner and had been stopped by the words *Bluefall Incident* appearing on the screen above the hot food station. She stood in the middle of the dinner rush and watched the segment and did not move until it was over.
The anchor was brisk and professional, the segment clearly pre-produced rather than breaking, which meant the story had been in the pipeline for at least a day and had been shaped before it aired. The graphic showed a blue-tinged sky, the atmospheric shimmer that had appeared over multiple cities on the same night three weeks ago. Expert interviews: an atmospheric physicist from Narae University explaining electromagnetic resonance in the upper ionosphere, a meteorologist calling it a once-in-a-decade event, a spokesperson from the National Weather Service confirming the *natural phenomenon* classification. And at the end, briefly, a fifteen-second clip from a Starline spokesperson: *Our operations were not affected by the Bluefall event. Our passengers’ safety is our primary commitment.*
The segment ended. The anchor moved to the next story.
Mina picked up her tray and found a table and sat down and looked at her food without seeing it.
The Bluefall event had happened on a Tuesday night. She had been on shift. Park Sungwoo had arrived in the early hours of Wednesday morning. The neural monitoring device had lit blue. The discharge had gone through the cable and into her hand.
She had assumed, without quite examining the assumption, that the sequence was coincidental. Or rather: she had put the sequence in the *unknown, pending* file and left it there, because she had not had sufficient information to determine whether it was coincidental or causal, and she was careful about that distinction.
She was less uncertain now.
The atmospheric physicist on the television had used the phrase *electromagnetic resonance*. He had used it in the context of natural ionospheric events. But she had read enough of Liora’s technical messages — Liora had forwarded them to her last night, the full forty-seven, with annotations — to know that electromagnetic resonance was also the mechanism the Starline neural interface used to synchronize with passenger brainwave patterns. The technology worked by establishing a resonant frequency between the interface hardware and the sleeping brain, creating the conditions for what the company called *guided deep rest*.
A resonant frequency in the ionosphere, in the same frequency range, at the same time as a system-wide malfunction in the Starline network.
She ate her dinner.
The cafeteria moved around her: the particular dinner-rush version of hospital cafeteria, which had a faster rhythm than the middle-of-night version and a different demographic. Day-shift staff coming off; evening visitors; medical students with the specific exhausted urgency of people who had too much to learn and not enough time. A table of nurses near the window was having a conversation about someone’s sister’s wedding. A first-year resident was studying from a tablet, his food going cold in the way of someone who had not yet learned to eat when eating was available.
Mina looked at them and felt the familiar slight vertigo of being in the same physical space as people who did not know what she knew. It was not an uncommon feeling, in medicine — the knowledge differential between patient and provider, between specialist and generalist, between the person who had read the test results and the person waiting to hear them. She was used to that version of it. This version was different: not professional asymmetry but the specific strangeness of knowing that the world contained a thing that the world was actively not looking at.
Her phone buzzed.
A text from a number she had saved yesterday: *Kai Arven, Aureon Bay.*
Liora had given him her number at the afternoon meeting, which Mina had not attended in person but had participated in via a video call from the on-call room, watching Liora spread Noel’s notebooks across a table in the Aureon Bay rail maintenance building and explain, for the first time to someone else who was genuinely listening, everything she had assembled over three months.
She had watched Kai listen. Not the polite listening of someone waiting for their turn to speak, but the focused, still listening of someone building a structure from incoming information. He had asked two questions during the entire presentation: both technical, both precise, both aimed at the specific joints in Liora’s argument where the data was thinnest. She had answered them. He had nodded once, the kind of nod that meant *I am updating my model* rather than *I agree*.
At the end, he had looked at the camera — at her, on the small screen of Liora’s phone — and said: *The night of Bluefall. You were in the ward.’*
*Yes,* she had said.
*You touched the interface hardware during the overload.*
*Yes.*
A pause. *So did I. Different location, same night, same window.*
She had looked at him through the small screen for a moment. He had looked back at her. It was not quite recognition — they did not know each other’s faces clearly enough for that — but it was the thing adjacent to recognition: the awareness of a pattern completing itself.
*The dreams,* she had said.
*Yes,* he had said.
Now his text read: *I filed an updated report with the anomaly correlation data this afternoon. My supervisor marked it non-critical. I’m going to escalate to the regional safety board tomorrow. Do you have documentation of the unauthorized access to your hospital account?*
She typed back: *Seven months of logs. I can pull them tonight.*
His response came quickly: *Good. We’re going to need more than anomalies. We need something with a human face on it.*
She looked at that phrase. *A human face.* She thought about Park Sungwoo, restricted access, Dain’s name on the attending line. She thought about the nine cases in her notebook and the six of them routed to neurology and the two with incomplete follow-up.
She typed: *I have nine. Working on getting documentation on all of them.*
A pause, slightly longer than before.
*Nine in Narae alone?*
*That I can find from inside the system. There may be more.*
Another pause.
*I have three in Aureon Bay General. Liora knows of four others at facilities we haven’t accessed yet.*
Mina did the arithmetic: at minimum, sixteen people. In two cities. From a trial program that was, according to the Starline spokesperson, not affecting anyone.
She finished her dinner. She returned her tray. She took the elevator to the third floor and the on-call room, because she had four hours before her next set of rounds and she needed to sleep, and she needed to think, and sometimes those two things were more compatible than she expected.
She lay down and stared at the ceiling.
She thought about the cafeteria television: the atmospheric physicist, the meteorologist, the spokesperson’s fifteen seconds of calm assurance. The segment had been shaped. It had been placed in the pipeline at a specific moment, by someone who had decided that *natural phenomenon* needed to be the established framing before other framings could take hold. This was how narratives were managed: not by lying, necessarily, but by establishing the default interpretation so firmly that alternatives required disproportionate effort to introduce.
She thought about who had the resources to shape a news segment about a national weather event.
She thought about Dain, who was a neurologist at the hospital where she worked, who was the attending on a Starline-related case, whose name she had found in a file she had reason to believe was connected to a program that was putting people in comas.
She had not confronted him. She had been building her list, following her threads, doing the slow careful work of assembling something solid before she said anything out loud. This was the correct approach. It was also, she was aware, a version of the thing she had been doing for eight months: waiting for the picture to be complete before she acknowledged what was already visible.
The picture was becoming complete.
She closed her eyes.
She fell asleep at 20:14, which was faster than usual, and she dreamed as soon as she did: the station, the stars, the platform. But tonight something was different. The tracks between the two platforms were lit, faintly, with the same blue she had seen in the neural monitor, in the device at Bed Four, in the signal panel at the test corridor in Aureon Bay. A thin blue line running the length of the rails, connecting the two platforms, connecting the two sides of the station.
On the other platform, the man was standing still. Looking at the rails.
Then he looked up at her.
For the first time, in the blue light, she could almost see his face.
She stepped to the platform edge. She was aware, in the way of dreams where you are slightly more yourself than usual, that she was doing this deliberately. Choosing to step forward. Choosing to look.
He stepped to his platform edge too.
The distance between them was the width of two rails and whatever the space between the platforms was: not far, in physical terms. Far, in the terms of this place, where distance did not always correspond to what it measured.
“I’m a doctor,” she said. Because it seemed important to establish. Because if this was real — if he was real — she wanted him to know.
“I know,” he said. His voice was the voice she had heard before: clear, measured, not warm exactly but not cold, the voice of someone who chose words with care. “You look at people like you’re reading their vitals.”
She almost laughed. “Is that — is that what it looks like from there?”
“It looks like you’re always checking whether something is still running.”
She looked at him across the lit rails. The blue light ran steady between them, not pulsing now, just present. A connection that had been there all along, she thought, and was now visible.
“Are you the engineer?” she said.
“Kai,” he said.
And before the train came — she could hear it now, the familiar displacement of air, the sound gathering at the edge of the dream — she said: “Mina.”
The train came.
She woke at 22:30 with her own name in her mouth like something she had just given away, and her hand pressed flat against her sternum, and the absolute certainty that it had been received.
She lay in the dark for a moment.
Then she picked up her phone and opened Kai’s contact and typed: *I think we need to get on the same train.*
His response came three minutes later, from Aureon Bay, where it was the same time and presumably the same dark.
*I know,* he wrote. *I was going to say the same thing.*
She did not sleep again after that.
She lay in the on-call room with the ceiling above her and the hospital running its quiet nighttime operations around her and thought about a man in Aureon Bay who was awake at the same time she was, looking at the same dark, having sent the same message she had been working toward. She thought about the blue light on the rails between the two platforms. She thought about her name leaving her mouth and the sense that it had landed somewhere.
She had not told Dain about the dreams. She had not told him about Liora, or the access logs, or the nine cases in her notebook. She had told him nothing since the cafeteria conversation when she had said *Starline* and watched his face do its small recalibration. She had been, since then, in a period of careful observation: maintaining the surface of things while the thing below the surface took shape.
The surface was becoming harder to maintain.
She pulled up her phone and opened the note app where she kept the working list. Sixteen cases, two cities, a pattern of restricted access and managed narratives and a company spokesperson who had appeared on television looking calm. A neurologist who had access to her credentials and had used them. A name on an attending line that should not have been there.
She thought about what Kai had said in the video call. *We need something with a human face on it.* He was right. The technical data was real and building, but technical data was not the same as testimony, and testimony was not the same as documented harm, and documented harm was not the same as a case that could not be managed into silence.
She needed Park Sungwoo’s family.
She needed the families of the other cases. She needed people who would stand up and say: *this happened to someone I love, and here is what it cost, and here is what I was told, and here is the gap between those two things.*
At 23:00, she texted Liora again: *Do you have contact with any of the other affected families? Not just Noel’s case. The others in Aureon.*
Liora: *Two. I’ve been careful about reaching out. Didn’t want to do it before I had more than suspicion to offer.*
Mina: *You have more now. We have more. When Kai takes this to the regional safety board, will they come forward?*
A longer pause.
Liora: *I think so. One of them has been waiting for someone else to go first.*
Mina sat with that for a moment. Someone waiting for someone else to go first. She understood the feeling — the specific paralysis of being alone in a room with information that was too heavy to carry and too dangerous to set down. You needed someone else in the room with you before you could move.
She typed: *Tell them they don’t have to go first anymore.*
She put her phone down and looked at the ceiling.
The on-call room was the same as it always was: one window, no ventilation, the cot that required diagonal positioning. She had spent hundreds of nights in this room. She had thought about many things in this room: diagnoses, procedures, the accumulated decisions of a working life in emergency medicine. She had worried in this room, had planned in this room, had sometimes cried in this room in the specific way you were allowed to cry in a room where no one could see.
She had not, in any of those previous nights, been conducting a parallel investigation into a corporate sleep technology program while maintaining a cover of professional normalcy in a relationship she was no longer sure she trusted.
It was a great deal to hold.
She was holding it.
At 23:47, her phone lit up with a call from Dain.
She looked at it for two full rings. She thought about the cafeteria, about the redirected conversation, about the face-down phone and the muffled perfume and the eight months of small not-quite-rights she had been filing under *unknown, pending*.
She thought about her name in the access logs, from when she was asleep.
She answered.
“Hey,” he said. His voice had the warm register he used for late-night calls, the slightly lower pitch that signified: *I am being intimate with you.* She heard it differently than she had a month ago. “Still on shift?”
“On a break,” she said.
“I was thinking about you. Are you eating properly?”
“I ate dinner.”
“Good.” A pause. “I wanted to check in. You’ve seemed distant.”
Mina thought about the word *distant*. It was a framing: her behavior as the variable requiring explanation, the relationship as the stable baseline. If she seemed distant, the question was what she had moved away from, not whether the thing she had moved from had changed.
“I’ve been busy,” she said.
“I know you have. I just miss you.”
She said nothing for a moment.
In the silence, she could hear the hospital around her: the hum of the ventilation system, the distant sound of a monitor, the specific quiet of a building that was always, at some level, listening for the next alarm.
“I’ll talk to you tomorrow,” she said. “I need to sleep before rounds.”
“Of course. Sleep well, Mina.”
She ended the call.
She put the phone face-down on the nightstand, which she was doing deliberately, which she was aware she was doing deliberately, and which told her something she had already known but was now admitting: that she had crossed from *gathering information* into *taking a position*, and the two things were not the same.
She would deal with it. Carefully, completely, in the way she dealt with everything: with the full picture in hand before she said the words out loud.
But she was done waiting for a picture that was already complete enough.
She closed her eyes.
She did not dream again that night. But she woke at 02:00, four minutes before her alarm, with the particular alertness of a mind that had been working through something in the background and had come to a conclusion.
She knew what she was going to do.
She got up and went to work.
