The Bed Eight patient’s name was Joon Sera, and she had been a middle school art teacher before she took the overnight Starline from Narae to Aureon Bay to visit her daughter.
Mina had found this out by pulling the full admission chart during morning rounds and reading it carefully, the way she read everything she needed to understand. Joon Sera was fifty-eight years old, no significant medical history, routine physical three months ago showing a woman in good health who walked forty minutes every morning and had a blood pressure her GP had called “the envy of patients half your age.” She had purchased a Starline commercial ticket three weeks after the trial period ended, because a colleague had taken the overnight and described it as the best sleep of her adult life. She had packed a small bag, eaten dinner at the station, boarded the 00:17.
She had not woken up on schedule.
The attending notes in the Narae end of the transfer had the same template language Mina had been collecting: *unexplained sleep inertia, neurological monitoring initiated, transfer to specialist care pending family notification.* The attending had been different from the trial cases — not Dain, a general practitioner covering the Aureon Bay arrival platform’s medical station. But the language was the same. The shape of it was the same.
Someone had written a template. Someone had distributed it to medical personnel at multiple points in the Starline network. The template said *sleep inertia*, which was a real condition, and *specialist care*, which was not untrue, and *pending family notification*, which created a delay before anyone outside the medical system could ask questions.
Mina stood in the doorway of Bed Eight and looked at Joon Sera and thought about the art teacher who walked forty minutes every morning.
The neural monitoring device was running. Its amber light was steady. She had requested, through channels, a review of the device specifications for this model — the same model that had been on Park Sungwoo, the same model Liora had described in her technical messages. The review request had been acknowledged and queued. She did not expect it to move quickly.
She moved her rounds along.
At 10:30, she was charting at the nursing station when Dain appeared.
He was carrying two cups of coffee from the good cart on the second floor, the one the residents were technically not supposed to use because it was reserved for attending physicians, which Dain had always treated as a guideline rather than a rule. He set one cup in front of her with the ease of someone performing a gesture so practiced it had become indistinguishable from spontaneous.
“You look tired,” he said.
“I’m fine.”
“You’re always fine.” He sat down in the adjacent chair. Not at a nursing station chair — he was not on the emergency ward rotation, he had no clinical reason to be here — but in the chair that the day-shift nurse had vacated two minutes ago and would return to shortly. He had a way of occupying space that looked like belonging.
Mina looked at the coffee.
She thought about nine cases in her notebook. She thought about access logs and template language and restricted access and a Starline spokesperson on television looking calm.
She thought about what it meant that he was here, in her ward, with coffee, the day after she had declined to come to dinner and not called him back.
“How’s Sungwoo?” she said. Neutral. Clinical. The question of a colleague asking about a transferred case.
Dain’s expression shifted in the way she had learned to watch for: the small recalibration, the adjustment to the new landscape of the conversation. “Stable. We’re monitoring.”
“Any response to stimuli?”
“Some. We’re optimistic.”
“Did the family come in?”
A beat. Slightly longer than a clinical question merited. “We’re still working on notification.”
Mina looked at her screen. She typed three characters into the chart she was working on, because her hands needed to be doing something. “He was admitted as an emergency contact not reached. Three weeks ago. That’s a long time for notification to still be in progress.”
“These things take time.” His voice was still warm, still the warm-and-slightly-concerned register. But there was something underneath it that she was tracking now, that she had been tracking for days, and could not stop tracking. “Mina. Is something wrong?”
She looked at him.
Two years. She had spent two years looking at this face and finding it trustworthy. She had made the decision, each time she looked, that the trustworthiness was real. She had made this decision even in the months when she had evidence to the contrary, because the decision was easier than the alternative and she had been tired and it was easier to stay in a place you knew than to walk out into the uncertainty of what came after.
The thing about uncertainty was that it was temporary. You walked into it, and you did the work, and it resolved.
She was doing the work.
“I’m fine,” she said. “Thank you for the coffee.”
He looked at her for a moment. The warm-and-slightly-concerned expression held, but she could see, underneath it, the small calculation running. She had learned to see it. She was not sure when she had learned, but she knew now that she had always been able to see it and had been choosing not to.
“Dinner tonight?” he said.
“I’m on until nine.”
“After nine, then.”
“I’ll let you know.”
He left. He took his coffee with him. He did not take hers, which she appreciated in the precise, small way you appreciated things that were technically considerate.
She did not drink it.
At 14:00, between afternoon rounds and the chart review she had scheduled for herself, she went back to Bed Eight.
Joon Sera was unchanged: breathing steady, vitals stable, the particular stillness of a sleep that was not sleep. Mina pulled the visitor’s chair to the bedside and sat in it, which was not clinical behavior but which she was doing anyway, because she had nineteen minutes before her next responsibility and she wanted to spend them here.
She looked at the neural monitoring device on its bracket. The amber light. The slim crescent of white plastic against Joon Sera’s temple.
She thought about what Kai had told her in the video call, about the signal corridor. About the way the variance pattern was correlated with the neural interface frequency. About his hypothesis — careful, technical, precisely qualified — that the overload during Bluefall had not been a malfunction but an exposure: the system running above its design parameters, pushing more signal through the interface than it was built to handle, and some of that signal going somewhere it was not supposed to go.
Into the passengers. Into the hardware contacts. Into the brains of the people on the train. And — she was the part of the hypothesis he had left implicit, because he did not know her well enough yet to say it directly — into her, through the cable. Into him, through the override switch. Into both of them in a way that had left a residue: a frequency, a connection, a shared geography that showed up when they slept.
She looked at Joon Sera.
The art teacher was somewhere. Not here, not in the body that was breathing and being monitored and being charted. Somewhere that Mina had been to, in fragments, in the sleep stolen between shifts. Somewhere with a starlit sky and a station and a train that ran without stopping.
She thought about what it would mean to go there deliberately.
To go there and find the people who were lost in it.
Kai had said, at the end of the video call, something he had not said with full confidence, something she could hear him testing as he said it: *I think the people who went in on the 00:17 are still in the system. I think some of them are still there.* He had paused. *I think we might be able to reach them.*
She had not responded immediately. She had been thinking about the platform, the tracks, the door to a corridor. She had been thinking about the specific quality of the station as a place not just visited but inhabitable: a place you could move through, explore, navigate.
She had said: *I think you’re right.*
Now she looked at Joon Sera and thought: *I’m going to find a way to reach you.*
She did not know how yet. She knew that she needed the 00:17. She knew that she needed Kai on the same train. She knew that they needed to go in with more than the passive, fragmentary access they had been experiencing — they needed to go in with purpose, with a plan, with the tools of their respective expertise available to them even there.
A doctor and an engineer, going into a broken system to find the people trapped inside it.
She almost smiled at the shape of it. It was not the shape of anything she had trained for. It was not the shape of anything in any manual she had read.
But it was the shape of the next thing, and she had spent enough time in the emergency ward to know that the next thing was always the next thing, whether you were ready for it or not.
Her nineteen minutes were up.
She stood, pushed the chair back, looked at Joon Sera one more time.
“I’m coming,” she said. Quietly, because she was alone, because it felt important to say even if it was not heard. “Hold on.”
She went back to work.
At 19:00, checking the ward before her dinner break, she stopped by the nursing station and pulled up the neural monitoring device specifications she had requested that morning.
The review request had been closed. Not queued, not pending. Closed, with a notation: *Device specifications are proprietary to Starline Sleep Systems, Inc. Information request requires vendor authorization. Contact vendor directly.*
She read it twice.
She thought about who in the hospital administration had the authority to close a resident’s equipment review request and redirect it to a vendor.
She thought about Dain, in her ward that morning, carrying coffee from the attending cart.
She saved the closure notification to her personal records.
She added it to the list.
She texted Kai at 19:23, from the cafeteria where she was eating her dinner with her phone on the table: *Device spec request closed. Redirected to vendor. Someone in hospital admin closed it.*
His response came in six minutes: *Same thing happened to my escalation request. Regional safety board says Starline has filed a proactive safety certification and the board is deferring to their internal review. Deferral is valid for ninety days.*
Mina looked at the words *ninety days*.
Ninety days was a long time for people in a coma. Ninety days was a carefully chosen number: long enough to let a situation resolve, or be managed, or become old enough news that reactivating it required more effort than most people were willing to spend.
She typed: *They anticipated the escalation.*
*Yes,* he wrote. *This isn’t reactive. They have a playbook.*
She had known this, in the abstract, since the cafeteria television segment with the atmospheric physicist. Seeing it in action was different from knowing it abstractly. Seeing it in action meant the playbook was already running, which meant they were already behind, which meant the ninety-day window was the real timeline and everything else was working around it.
*What do we do?* she typed.
A pause. She imagined him at his desk in Aureon Bay, looking at Monitor Two, running the same calculations she was running. She had been doing this — imagining him thinking through a problem — with a frequency that she was aware of and had not yet decided how to categorize.
*We get on the train,* he wrote. *We go inside. We find what they don’t want found.*
She put her phone down and finished her dinner.
The cafeteria was quieter at this hour, the dinner rush over, the evening settling into the particular rhythm of a hospital that was handing itself over to the night. She sat in it and thought about the ninety-day window and the playbook and a company that had anticipated every official avenue and closed it.
She thought about the unofficial avenue.
Two people who had been accidentally connected to the system during a malfunction. Two people who could enter Starfield Line in a way that the system had not planned for and did not yet know how to prevent. Two people who were, as far as anyone in any official capacity knew, an emergency doctor with stress-related sleep disruption and a rail engineer with an anomaly he couldn’t stop filing reports about.
Not a threat. Not yet.
She picked up her phone.
*The 00:17 runs Fridays from both ends,* she typed. *I can get a ticket for Friday night.*
*So can I,* he replied immediately, as if he had been waiting for her to say it first. *I’ll book from the Aureon end. We’ll go in from both sides.*
She thought about that. Both sides of the station. Both platforms. And then — for the first time — the same side, the same train, the same darkness between departure and arrival.
She typed: *I’ve been having the dreams for three weeks and I still don’t know what your face looks like.*
A pause. Longer than the others.
*You’ll find out Friday,* he wrote.
Mina read the message twice. She was aware of something in her chest that was not the professional urgency she had been operating on for the past week, not the focused determination she brought to the ward and to the growing list in her notebook. It was smaller and quieter than those things. It occupied the space they left when they momentarily stepped back.
She had been running on adrenaline and anger and the specific fuel of someone who has discovered that the world contains an injustice she has the skills to address. Those were sustainable fuels, for a while. They were good fuels. They kept you moving.
But beneath them, in the quiet, was the other thing: a person she had been meeting in a starlit place for three weeks, whose voice she recognized before she recognized anything else about him, who had stepped toward her edge of the platform when she raised her hand.
Friday.
She had four days.
She put her phone in her pocket and returned to the ward, and she spent the rest of the evening with the focused attention she brought to everything that mattered: thorough, careful, fully present. She checked on Joon Sera twice more. She reviewed the neural monitoring logs, documented everything, added to the list.
At 23:00, handing off to the night team, she stopped at the nursing station and looked at the ward she had been working in for four years. The lights at seventy percent, the familiar sounds, the particular quality of a place you had spent enough time in that it had become part of the texture of yourself.
She thought about what she was about to do, which was to get on a train and go into a place she had only visited by accident, with a person she had only ever seen through the wrong light, in order to find people who were lost in a system that was actively trying to prevent them from being found.
She thought about Joon Sera, who had taken a train to visit her daughter and not come back.
She thought about Noel Vale, seventeen years old, in a repeating-loop carriage of a birthday party where the guests kept disappearing.
She thought about the list, and the closed review request, and the ninety-day window, and Dain carrying coffee from the attending cart.
She took a breath.
She went home, and she set an alarm, and she slept without dreaming until morning.
