She arrived exactly on time, which Kai had not expected.
He had expected her to be early — the messages had given him a picture of someone who ran at high intensity, who did not waste time, who had been waiting for this meeting with the specific urgency of three months of closed doors. Early made sense for someone like that. But she arrived at 14:00 exactly, which told him something different: she had been outside, or nearby, timing herself. She was managing the impression she made.
Kai noted this and said nothing about it.
The conference room he had borrowed was small, with a table that could seat six but was currently occupied only by Liora’s canvas bag, which she set down and opened before she had fully sat, with the efficiency of someone who had been rehearsing this moment.
“Thank you for meeting me,” she said.
“You had the routing code,” Kai said. “That was sufficient.”
She looked at him for a moment. He could see her recalibrating something — an expectation, maybe, about how this would go. He was not always the easiest person to read from a first meeting, which he knew and had decided long ago was not his problem to solve.
“Right,” she said. “Okay.” And she began.
She had organized the presentation with the care of someone who knew their credibility was a limited resource and was not going to squander it on anything non-essential. No preamble. No appeals to his sympathy. She started with the technical data: the routing code, the signal variance documentation, the timeline of the trial runs, the correlation between the trial dates and the admission dates at Aureon Bay General. She walked him through the evidence methodically, in the same order she had presumably assembled it, letting the structure speak for itself.
Kai listened.
He asked his two questions. She answered them. He nodded.
When she reached the patient data — the cases, the template language, the families she had been quietly in contact with — her voice changed. Not dramatically. Just slightly flatter, the way people’s voices changed when they were reporting something that cost them something to report.
“Noel,” he said, when she reached the last case.
“Yes.”
“How long has he been in Aureon Bay General?”
“Three months and eleven days.” She said it with the precision of someone who counted.
Kai looked at the table. He looked at Noel’s notebook, which she had laid out in front of him, open to the page with the dream description. He had been trying not to look at it directly since she put it down, the way you avoided looking directly at something you were still deciding how to react to.
He read it.
The handwriting was neat and slightly cramped, the writing of someone who thought faster than they wrote and had learned to compensate. The dream: a train station, a starlit sky, two platforms, a doctor and an engineer. The line of light connecting their stars.
Kai thought about the platform. The woman in the white coat. The way she had stood at the platform edge and pressed her hand against the glass when he was in the corridor and she was in the dream from a different angle.
*Unauthorized Emotional Link*, the system had not yet said. He had not yet heard that language. But he thought about the blue light on the rails in her dream two nights ago, the way she had described it in her text: *a line connecting both sides*.
Noel had seen it first.
Noel had seen it before either of them had gotten on the train.
“Your brother was on the preliminary installation team,” he said.
“Yes. He was sixteen, technically too young, but the program was officially a work-experience placement and they needed bodies who could follow instructions without asking too many questions.” She said this without inflection, which meant the inflection was in what she did not say. “He kept notebooks. He always kept notebooks. He wrote about everything.”
“He wrote about the frequency,” Kai said.
“He wrote about the frequency. He wrote about what happened when the installation crew had physical contact with the interface hardware during the alignment calibration. A tingling, he called it. Not a shock. Like something resonating.”
Kai thought about his own word for it. *A frequency.* He had not used *tingling*. But they were descriptions of the same thing.
“He also wrote,” Liora said, and here her voice went flattest, “that Dr. Soren Vale told the installation crew this was a normal side effect of the calibration process. That it would resolve in a few days. That it was nothing to document.”
Kai looked at her.
“Dr. Soren Vale,” he said.
“The head of the Somnium Core project. The lead designer of the Starline neural interface.” She met his eyes. “My uncle.”
The silence in the conference room had a specific quality after that. Kai let it run for a moment, because some information needed space around it before it could be properly understood.
“He knows Noel is in the coma,” Kai said. Not a question.
“Yes.”
“He’s not helping.”
“He stopped returning my calls eight weeks ago.” She said it flatly. “Before that, he told me the situation was being handled. He told me Noel’s case was within the parameters of expected outcomes for the trial. He told me the recovery protocol was on schedule.”
“And you didn’t believe him.”
“Noel hasn’t moved in three months. His EEG shows activity, but it’s not the activity of a person who is recovering. It’s the activity of a person who is… elsewhere.” She looked at the notebook. “I think he’s still in there. In the system. I think they all are. And I think Soren knows it and is choosing to continue the project anyway because stopping it would mean admitting what happened.”
Kai looked at the notebook again. At the description of the station, the platforms, the connecting light.
He thought about the woman in the video call that afternoon, after Liora had set up her phone on the table and dialed in. He had not been sure what to expect from a name on a contact list that Liora had described as *the doctor in Narae, she’s already in the system*. He had been prepared for most things. He had not been prepared for the specific quality of attention she brought: the focused, un-performative listening that he recognized because he practiced it himself and rarely encountered it in other people.
She had asked no unnecessary questions. She had provided information in the same precise, qualified way he tried to provide it. When he had looked at the camera and said *The night of Bluefall — you were in the ward*, she had said *yes* without hedging it, without adding context that wasn’t asked for. When he had said *the same discharge, the same window*, she had not expressed surprise or disbelief. She had processed it the way you processed a data point that fit the model.
He was not, as a rule, a person who made fast judgments about people. He had learned to be careful about that, for reasons he did not revisit. But there was a category of person — rare, not common — whom you met and thought: *this person will do the work*. Not because they said so. Because the work was already visible in how they operated.
She was in that category.
He thought about her name, which she had told him in the dream last night. He had woken up with it, the way you woke with songs: already there, preceding consciousness, available before he was fully himself again.
Mina.
“The doctor in Narae,” he said to Liora. “How did you find her?”
“Noel’s notebook,” Liora said. “He described her before the trial. Dark hair, moves fast, works in emergency medicine in Narae City. He wrote: she will understand about the train.”
“He predicted she’d be involved.”
“He predicted something. I’m not sure *involved* is the right word.” Liora looked at the notebook. “I think the system was already connecting them before either of them knew it existed. Before the trial run. Before Bluefall. The resonance was there, and it was finding the people it could reach.”
Kai thought about this.
He thought about the 0.3-millisecond variance appearing at the same point in the sequence every night, with the regularity of something that was not malfunctioning but was functioning as designed, in a way the public documentation did not disclose.
He thought about a system that was designed to connect to brains and had found two that were compatible and had been, in its way, trying to connect them.
He picked up Noel’s notebook.
He read the dream description again, more slowly this time.
*The engineer,* Noel had written, *crouches down and looks at things before anyone else notices they’re worth looking at.*
Kai set the notebook down.
“I’ll go to the hospital,” he said. “Today, if you’re willing to take me. I want to see Noel.”
Liora looked at him with the expression of someone who had been carrying something alone for long enough that any offer of help produced a reflexive suspicion before the relief set in. He recognized the expression. He did not take it personally.
“You want to see if the frequency is still there,” she said.
“I want to see if he responds to the signal,” Kai said. “I have a recording of the corridor variance. Specific frequency, specific timing. If it’s the same signal he was exposed to during installation — if it’s the signal the system uses — he might respond to it.”
Liora was quiet for a moment.
“My uncle would say that’s unauthorized medical intervention,” she said.
“Your uncle stopped returning your calls eight weeks ago,” Kai said.
She looked at him.
Then she picked up her bag.
“I have a car,” she said. “Let’s go.”
Aureon Bay General was twenty minutes from the maintenance hub. Kai sat in the passenger seat with his phone open to the recording he had made of the signal variance — forty seconds of sound that the human ear interpreted as a very low hum, barely at the threshold of perception — and looked at the city moving past the window.
It was a bright afternoon. The sea bridge was visible from the highway, its span catching the light. The Starline test corridor ran beneath it for part of its length, the rails invisible from here, the section containing SL-TRK-004-NB somewhere in the middle distance.
He thought about the dream. The station. The platform.
He thought about Mina saying her name across the lit tracks, the specific quality of it: offering information, not performing connection. The same way she said everything, apparently. The same way she operated.
Friday, he had told her. Four days.
Four days, and then the 00:17, and then whatever came next.
He was not, generally, a person who looked forward to things. He had organized his life around function rather than anticipation, around the work that was in front of him rather than the work that was coming. This was a deliberate organization. It had served him well, mostly.
He was looking forward to Friday.
He noticed this with the careful attention he gave to things he did not usually do, filed it under *anomalous, note and continue*, and looked back at the sea bridge.
Liora parked, and they went inside, and at the end of a corridor on the fourth floor, in a room where the afternoon light came through the curtains at a low angle, Kai played forty seconds of a signal recording to a seventeen-year-old boy who had not moved in three months.
Noel’s heart rate increased by twelve beats per minute.
His eyes moved beneath his lids.
Liora made a sound that was not quite a word. She was standing at the foot of the bed with both hands gripping the bed frame, and Kai was aware of her the way he was aware of the periphery during a technical crisis: present, accounted for, not his immediate focus.
Noel’s eyes moved again. His fingers, lying flat on the blanket, curled slightly.
Then the heart rate returned to baseline. The eyes stilled. The fingers opened back to flat.
Kai looked at the monitor for a long moment.
Then he looked at Noel, who was seventeen and had worked on an installation team and kept notebooks and had described, three days before his trial run, a doctor and an engineer who had not yet met each other.
“He’s still in there,” Kai said. Not for Liora’s benefit — she knew that. For himself. To say it out loud in a room where the evidence was right in front of him. “He heard it.”
“He heard it,” Liora said. Her voice was very controlled.
Kai put his phone away.
“We’re going to get him out,” he said.
It was the most he had promised anyone in two years. He said it anyway, because the evidence in front of him warranted it, and because Liora Vale had been carrying this for three months and she deserved to hear someone say it out loud and mean it.
He meant it.
They stayed for twenty minutes.
Liora sat with Noel for most of it, talking to him in a low voice about small things — the cafe near the hospital where she had been eating breakfast, the book she had been trying to read for three months and kept setting aside, the neighbor’s dog that had started barking at 05:00 every morning for no apparent reason. Kai stood near the window and let her have the space. He looked at the city from the fourth floor: the bay visible at the end of a gap between buildings, the sea bridge, the rail lines running their various routes through the afternoon.
He thought about the signal recording on his phone. Forty seconds of a frequency that a boy in a hospital bed had responded to by moving his eyes and curling his fingers.
The frequency was the key. Not the train, not the neural monitoring device, not the elaborate infrastructure of the system. The frequency was what connected them: the interface signal, running at the specific resonance that synchronized with the human nervous system, the same signal that had moved through his hand in the test corridor and connected him, apparently, to something he had not been designed to connect to.
He thought about what Liora had said: *the resonance was there, and it was finding the people it could reach.*
He thought about that framing. Not malfunction. Not accident. A signal that was doing what signals did: seeking compatible receivers.
He and Mina were compatible receivers. The system had found them. The question was whether they could use that connection deliberately, on their own terms, to do something the system had not intended.
He thought they could.
He was going to find out on Friday.
On the drive back to the maintenance hub, Liora was quiet for the first five minutes. Then she said: “He knew you were there.”
“His heart rate responded,” Kai said. “His motor response.”
“I know what the measurements were. I’m saying he knew.” She looked at the road. “He knew it was you specifically. Not just the signal. You.”
Kai thought about this.
“How do you know that?” he said.
“Because he wrote about you. He described you.” She glanced at him briefly. “He wrote: the engineer is the one who looks at what other people miss. He’s the one who will find the way in.”
Kai looked at the road ahead.
He was not comfortable with this kind of statement. He was not comfortable with being described, by a boy he had never met, as the person who would find the way in. It had the quality of expectation, which was the quality he had spent two years trying not to have directed at him.
But Noel was not the public. Noel was not the fan account, not the media, not the person projecting a heroism that wasn’t there. Noel was seventeen years old and in a hospital bed because he had worked on a project he was too young to be working on, and he had written in a notebook about a doctor and an engineer who were going to come looking for him.
Kai was going to come looking for him.
The description was accurate.
“We’ll be on the 00:17 Friday night,” he said. “Mina and I. We’ll go in from both ends of the line.”
“I know,” Liora said. “She texted me.”
Of course she had. He thought about Mina, three hundred kilometers away, building her list, pulling her logs, saying *I’m in* before she knew the full shape of what she was in for. He thought about the quality of that. The quiet certainty of it.
“What do you need from me?” Liora asked.
“For Friday: nothing yet. Keep building the external documentation. The families you’ve been in contact with — get written statements if you can. Timestamped, witnessed if possible. We’re building two tracks: the inside track, which is what Mina and I are doing, and the outside track, which is the documentation that makes it impossible to deny when the inside track produces results.”
Liora nodded. She drove with the same focused efficiency she brought to everything else. “And after Friday?”
“After Friday, we’ll have more information than we have now. We’ll know what’s actually inside. We’ll know if the people there can be reached.” He paused. “We’ll know what it costs to reach them.”
She was quiet for a moment.
“You think there’s a cost,” she said.
“There’s always a cost. The question is whether it’s manageable.”
She nodded again. She did not ask him to be more specific, which he appreciated. She seemed to understand that he was not withholding reassurance; he simply did not have it to give, and he was not going to manufacture it.
She dropped him at the maintenance hub at 16:30. He got out, then paused with the door open.
“For what it’s worth,” he said. “He’s in there. I heard it in the monitor.”
Liora looked at him. Her eyes were very steady. “I know,” she said. “I’ve always known.”
He closed the door. She drove away.
He went back to his desk, and to Monitor Two, and to the anomaly that was still running its 0.3-millisecond variance with its patient regularity. He sat and looked at it for a long time.
Friday. He had four days.
He thought about the dream last night. The lit rails. Mina at the platform edge, stepping forward, choosing to look. Her voice saying *I’m a doctor*, which was the most compressed version of what she was offering him: not just herself, but her expertise, her tools, her refusal to walk away from a person who needed help.
He had not had a partner in a long time. He had been, since the accident two years ago, systematically alone: in his methods, in his decisions, in the way he moved through problems. He had constructed this as efficiency. He was aware it was also armor.
Friday, he was going to have to take off the armor. You could not navigate a broken system with one set of eyes and one set of hands. You needed both.
He was ready for that.
He pulled up the ticket booking interface for the Starline 00:17 and made his reservation: Aureon Bay to Narae City, departing Friday, 00:17.
Three seconds later, his phone buzzed. Mina: *Booked. See you on the other side.*
He looked at that for a moment.
Then he put his phone down and went back to work, and the signal on Monitor Two ran its pattern, and somewhere in the system, something that was waiting for Friday waited a little less patiently than before.
You've reached the end of this chapter
She arrived exactly on time, which Kai had not expected.

“He wrote about the frequency,” Kai said.
“He wrote about the frequency. He wrote about what happened when the installation crew had physical contact with the interface hardware during the alignment calibration. A tingling, he called it. Not a shock. Like something resonating.”
