The spring semester began on a Monday in early January, and by Friday of that week Ha-eun had arranged the meeting with Gyu-won.
She had texted him during the break: when you're back, the three of us. He had responded with a date and a time and his apartment number, which was in the graduate housing across campus, a single room in a building where most of the occupants were third and fourth year students who had aged out of the first-year dormitory arrangement.
Ha-eun and Do-hyun arrived together, which was not a coordination they had explicitly made but which happened naturally because they had been walking to things together for months and this was another thing to walk to.
The apartment was small and very organized in the way of someone who had developed a system for containing a large amount of work-related material in a limited space. There were bookshelves along two walls and a desk that occupied most of the surface area of one side of the room, with notebooks stacked in a precision that Ha-eun recognized as the same system Gyu-won used in seminar: things arranged by project and sequence rather than subject, so that the material for any given current task was immediately accessible without searching.
He had tea ready.
Ha-eun sat at one end of the small table and Do-hyun sat at the other and Gyu-won sat in the middle, which was where he usually sat in group work settings, she had noticed: equidistant from all parties, in the position that allowed him to see everything.
She put the memory card on the table.
---
They listened to the forty-seven minutes together.
Gyu-won had a speaker that they connected the card to through his laptop, which meant the sound filled the small room: the static and echo of an old recording system, the ambient noise of a dispatch center at night, and then the voices.
Her mother's voice first, which she recognized immediately and which was different from how she had expected it to be, lower, more formal, stripped of the warmth she remembered from early childhood. This was her mother at work, in the controlled register of someone doing a high-stakes job with practiced calm. The dispatch call. The address. The priority classification.
Then the confirmation: team dispatched, ETA twelve minutes.
Then the timeline: the team's check-ins as they drove. The contact at the scene. Her mother's voice confirming: first unit on site, twelve minutes from initial call.
The ambient sounds of the dispatch room.
And then, at twenty-eight minutes into the recording, a second audio channel opening, a channel that was quieter and slightly different in quality, which Gyu-won identified immediately as a private radio frequency separate from the main dispatch system.
A voice on this channel.
She had never heard Kang Seong-jin's voice before. Do-hyun had. She watched his face.
Do-hyun was very still.
Seong-jin's voice, on the private channel, said: confirm the building is clear. Confirm everyone is out. Before you log the second unit response.
Her mother's voice, after a pause: the building assessment is ongoing. I can't confirm clear until the second team has done the sweep.
Seong-jin's voice: log it anyway. We'll do the confirmation sweep after.
A pause.
Then her mother's voice, quieter: someone called in a child on the third floor.
Silence on the private channel.
Then Seong-jin: who called it in.
Her mother: the resident directly below. She says she saw a child in the window before the smoke got heavy.
Longer silence.
Then Seong-jin: log the clear. I'll handle the third floor report separately.
Another pause. Then her mother's voice: I can't log a clear on an unconfirmed building. The protocol requires a sweep.
Seong-jin: I said I'll handle it.
Her mother: Seong-jin, if there is a child in that building, the second unit needs to know before they move to the secondary perimeter.
A long silence.
Then Seong-jin's voice, flat: log the clear.
Then the recording continued, and Ha-eun's mother logged the clear, and seven minutes later the building collapsed, and in the recording you could hear it happen as a series of sounds in the ambient channel, distant and specific, and then the voices of the dispatch team processing it.
They listened to the rest of the forty-seven minutes.
At the end, Gyu-won stopped the recording and no one spoke for a moment.
Ha-eun looked at Do-hyun.
He was looking at the center of the table with the expression he wore when he was holding something very large very carefully. She wanted to say something. She did not know what to say. She thought: he has just heard his father decide not to tell a rescue team about a child in a burning building.
She thought: the child was him.
---
After a while, Do-hyun said: "Someone reported a child on the third floor."
"Yes," Ha-eun said.
"And he told her to log a clear without acting on the report."
"Yes."
"Who did he know was in the building," Do-hyun said.
Ha-eun and Gyu-won looked at each other.
"The recording doesn't tell us that," Gyu-won said carefully. "We don't know from this who he knew was in the building."
"But he knew someone was," Do-hyun said. "Or he believed someone was. That's why he was on that channel. That's why he wanted to control the sweep timeline."
"Yes," Ha-eun said.
Do-hyun was quiet for a long time.
She thought about the question he was not asking directly: did his father know he was in that building. Did his father know his son was on the third floor when he told her mother to log the clear.
She did not know the answer to this question.
She did not think Gyu-won knew either.
She thought: this is the thing that is going to require more.
She said: "We don't know yet who he was trying to protect or who he knew was inside. The recording gives us what happened and when. It doesn't give us why."
Do-hyun looked at her.
"The why is in the rest of it," she said. "The certification, the amendment, the specific person or people in the building he was concerned about. We have the what. We don't have the why yet."
"But we have enough to know," Gyu-won said, "that the official record of the response timeline was deliberately falsified. And we have an audio record of the person who instructed the falsification."
"Yes," Ha-eun said.
They sat with this.
Ha-eun thought about her mother, sitting in the dispatch room at midnight ten years ago, receiving an instruction she knew was wrong, logging a clear she knew she could not verify, and then living for ten years with what that decision had contributed to. She thought about why her mother had left. She thought about why her mother had kept the recording.
She thought: she kept it because she knew it would be needed.
She thought: she sent it through the music box because she could not send it directly, because she was still afraid of something, because whatever she was afraid of was still present.
She thought about Kang Seong-jin, alive and managing his son's housing from a distance.
She thought: he is still present.
She thought: he is still afraid too.
She said: "We need to understand who was in the building. That's the next piece."
Gyu-won nodded. "I have something that might help," he said. He went to the bookshelf and retrieved a notebook, not a current one, the worn kind, with a broken spine from years of use. "My father's records. Not official records. Personal notes he kept separate from the official documentation."
He set it on the table.
"You've had these this whole time," Do-hyun said.
"Since before I came to Yeonhui," Gyu-won said. "I found them in the house after he died." He looked at them both. "He died two years before I enrolled. He left the notes where I would find them."
Ha-eun looked at the notebook.
She thought: everyone in this story left things for later. Her mother, her father, Gyu-won's father. All of them leaving evidence and waiting for the right person to find it at the right time.
She thought: we are the right people.
She thought: this is the right time.
"Let's look at them," she said.
They spent the rest of the afternoon at Gyu-won's table, going through the notebook together, the three of them reading the notes of a dead man who had certified a building he knew was not safe and had apparently, in his private records, documented why.
It was the hardest afternoon any of them had had.
It was also, in some way she could not fully name, the right afternoon. The one that had been coming since September, since the case study in disaster medicine class, since the first group seminar when Gyu-won had looked at Do-hyun's badge and filed the recognition away.
The three of them around a table.
Together.
Doing this together.
Ha-eun thought: this is what it was supposed to look like.
She thought: yes.
They read.
---
Gyu-won's father had been keeping notes for years.
They were organized by date and then by subject, written in the compressed technical handwriting of an engineer: short sentences, diagrams where sentences were insufficient, numerical annotations, the vocabulary of structural assessment applied to the documentation of decisions rather than of buildings. The notebook was about two-thirds full. The entries began seven years before the fire and continued to within a few months of Myeonghwa.
Ha-eun found the Myeonghwa entries first because they were the most heavily annotated, with the pages rippled from pressing too hard with the pen.
Nam Sung-rok had known the building was not safe.
The notes documented it: the ventilation modification that the owner had made without filing updated plans, the load-bearing wall in the non-standard position, the overall condition of the building which was not catastrophic but was significantly below the code requirements for the size and type of structure. He had documented all of this in his inspection notes.
He had also documented the pressure he had received to sign the certification anyway.
The notes did not name the source of the pressure directly, because he had been careful about this, but the context made it clear: someone with authority over his professional reputation had indicated that the certification was expected to be issued. The word he used was expected. He used it three times in three separate entries, each time with a specific notation: expected by whom is clear.
He had signed the certification because he had been told his professional license would be reviewed for irregularities if he did not.
This was not an excuse, and he had not written it as an excuse. He had written it as a record. As a fact to be known after the fact.
At the bottom of the last Myeonghwa entry, in a different pen that suggested it had been added later, was a single line: if you are reading this, you know enough to do the right thing. I am sorry I did not.
Ha-eun read this line and then looked at Gyu-won.
He was looking at the notebook with the particular expression she had learned to recognize on him: the controlled face over something that required the control.
"Your father wrote this knowing you would find it," she said.
"Yes," Gyu-won said.
"He wanted you to understand why he did it," Do-hyun said. He was looking at the page. His voice was careful. "And he wanted you to be able to do something about it."
"Yes," Gyu-won said again.
Ha-eun thought about three fathers. Her own, who had managed information carefully and sent a music box. Do-hyun's, who had made a decision on a private channel that had shaped everything. Gyu-won's, who had signed something he knew was wrong and spent the rest of his life documenting it for a son who would eventually find the notebook.
She thought: all three of them were trying to protect something.
She thought: all three of them had costs they paid that their children were still paying.
She thought: we are the generation that has to decide what to do with the things we inherited.
"Who pressured him," Do-hyun said. "The person he was careful not to name. Do you know."
Gyu-won turned to a page near the back of the notebook, one of the later entries, and pointed to a notation in the margin: a set of initials and a date. K.S.J. 2013.
Kang Seong-jin. 2013, the year before the fire.
Do-hyun sat back.
Ha-eun looked at him.
He was very still. She watched him receive this: his father had pressured the building's certifying inspector to sign off on a non-compliant structure. The chain was now complete, or nearly: Seong-jin to Nam, the building certified unsafe, the building failing, the response delayed, the record amended afterward to cover the delay.
"He covered all of it," Do-hyun said. "Not just the response timeline. He covered the building too."
"The building was the beginning," Gyu-won said. "The certification was the first decision. Everything else was managing the consequences of that decision."
"Why," Do-hyun said. "Why did he need the building certified."
Neither Ha-eun nor Gyu-won had this yet.
"That's the last piece," Ha-eun said. "We have the what and some of the how. The why is still not clear."
Do-hyun looked at the notebook. He looked at the initials in the margin. He looked at the date.
"My father pressured him in 2013," he said. "The fire was 2014. Between those two points, something made it necessary to have that building certified. Something that made the risk acceptable to him."
He stood up. He went to the window and looked out at the campus and stood there for a moment. Ha-eun looked at Gyu-won. He looked back. Neither of them said anything.
After a while Do-hyun said: "I need to think about this."
"Yes," Ha-eun said.
"I need some time."
"Take whatever you need," she said.
He turned and looked at her. She held the look. She thought: he is going to process this alone, the way he always processed the large things, and then he was going to come back with whatever he had found, and they were going to figure out the last piece together.
She thought: I will be here when he comes back.
He knew this.
She went home later and sat at her desk and did not open any of her investigation materials. She had received enough today. She needed to let it settle.
She thought about the notebook and the initials and the date and a man who had been managing consequences for ten years and was still alive and still managing them from a distance.
She thought about a woman in a dispatch room at midnight who had logged a clear because she was told to and had kept the recording because she could not live with the silence.
She thought about the specific sadness of people who had tried to protect something and ended up having to carry the cost of how they had protected it.
She thought about Do-hyun.
She knocked three times.
A long pause. Longer than usual.
Then three knocks back.
She pressed her hand to the wall.
She left it there for a while.
Then she went to make tea and sat at the window and thought: we are going to get through this.
She thought: I know we are.
She thought: spring is coming, and when it comes I am going to stand on the cherry blossom road and say what I know, and everything is going to be different after that.
She held this thought.
She believed it.
She went to bed.
---
She woke at three in the morning to three knocks.
Not the soft single knock of: I am here, I am thinking of you. Three knocks, the signal for: something is wrong, please respond.
She was awake immediately, the way she woke for the urgent things, the way she had trained herself to wake because she was going to be a doctor and doctors woke for the urgent things.
She knocked three times back and then went to the door and opened it.
Do-hyun was in the hallway.
He was still in the clothes he had been wearing that afternoon, the ones from Gyu-won's apartment, and he had not been sleeping. She could tell this from the quality of his alertness and the absence of the specific softness that came from sleep interrupted. He had been awake all night, processing, and at some point in the night had decided that what he was processing needed to stop being done alone.
"Come in," she said.
He came in and sat down at her table and she made tea because making tea was the correct response to three a.m. knocks and also because she needed something to do with her hands for the first two minutes while she became fully awake.
She sat across from him and waited.
He said: "He knew I was in the building."
Ha-eun looked at him.
"I've been thinking about it since we left Gyu-won's," he said. "The call that came in before the second unit moved. Someone saw a child in the window on the third floor. He was told about it. He chose not to tell the rescue team." He looked at the tea. "And then he went to prison afterward, not for the fire directly but for misuse of authority in the emergency response. He did not fight the charges. He resigned and cooperated."
Ha-eun said nothing. She let him continue.
"If he had known and not known it was me, he might have made a different calculation," Do-hyun said. "He might have told the team about the child in the window. He didn't. He chose to manage it separately." He looked up at her. "He said: I'll handle the third floor report separately. And then the building collapsed in the sweep window, and whoever he was protecting from the sweep was not me, because I got out. Someone else got me out."
Ha-eun thought about this.
"Someone else got you out," she said.
"Yes," he said. "I remember a hand. I don't remember a face. I was seven, nine years old, it was dark and there was smoke, and someone carried me out and I ended up on the street. I've never been able to identify who."
Ha-eun looked at him. She thought about the chain of events: the second unit not being told about the child on the third floor, which meant the official timeline had the sweep happening after the collapse rather than before it, which meant officially no one had been on the third floor when the building collapsed. But someone had been. Do-hyun had been. Someone had gotten him out.
Someone who was not on the official rescue record, because they were not supposed to be there.
"The person who got you out," she said slowly, "was the person your father was protecting by not telling the rescue team."
Do-hyun looked at her.
"He wanted whoever it was to get out without being documented," she said. "He was managing the timeline to create a window. Not to leave you in the building. To get someone else out quietly."
Do-hyun was very still.
"And in that window," she said, "someone carried you out. Someone who was already in the building."
"Someone who should not have been there officially," he said.
They looked at each other.
"Who was in that building," Ha-eun said. "That is what we don't have yet. That is the final piece."
Do-hyun was quiet for a long time.
Then: "I think it might have been him," he said. "I think he might have been in the building himself."
Ha-eun held this thought.
She turned it over.
She thought about a man who was still alive, managing things from a distance, who had gone to prison cooperating rather than fighting, who had sent his son to Seoul via a music box route because he could not face him directly.
She thought about a man who might have been in a burning building at the same time his nine-year-old son was, and who might have made impossible decisions in that window for reasons she did not yet understand.
She thought: we need to find him.
She said: "We need to find your father."
Do-hyun looked at her.
"My father knows where he is," she said. "He arranged the apartment. He has a contact. It's time to use it."
Do-hyun was quiet.
Then he said: "Yes."
They sat at the table at three in the morning and drank the tea and held the investigation and what it had produced, and Ha-eun thought about a child in a burning building and a hand that had carried him out and a father who had known and chosen not to tell the rescue team and spent years afterward in prison for a different charge, cooperating, paying a cost that was not the complete cost but was a cost.
She thought: this is so much more complicated than anything we thought it was.
She thought: and we are going to have to understand all of it.
She thought: together.
She thought: yes.
At five in the morning he went back to his apartment and she went back to sleep for two hours and woke up with the full weight of it on her and made tea and sat at the window and thought: this is the last semester before second year.
This was the year the blossoms were coming.
She thought: I am going to get through this.
She thought: we both are.
She believed it.
You've reached the end of this chapter
The spring semester began on a Monday in early January, and by Friday of that week Ha-eun had arranged the meeting with Gyu-won.

Ha-eun and Gyu-won looked at each other.

"But he knew someone was," Do-hyun said. "Or he believed someone was. That's why he was on that channel. That's why he wanted to control the sweep timeline."

"Let's look at them," she said.
They spent the rest of the afternoon at Gyu-won's table, going through the notebook together, the three of them reading the notes of a dead man who had certified a building he knew was not safe and had apparently, in his private records, documented why.
