The blossoms arrived on a Thursday night.
Ha-eun knew this because she had been watching the branches every morning on her way to the medical building, watching the buds move through their sequence of becoming, and on Thursday morning they had been close but not yet open, and on Friday morning the canopy was white and pink and the road was the road from the brochure, the road from the photograph on the postcard, the road she had been walking under in the bare version for six months.
She stopped in the middle of it and looked up.
She had planned to come here on Sunday. She had a camera and the image in her mind and the specific intention of the moment she had been imagining since December. But it was Friday morning and the blossoms were here and she had not planned for this, for the road being ready before she was scheduled to arrive at it.
She stood in the middle of the road and looked up at the canopy of blossoms and felt something that she had not been entirely prepared for: the specific emotional weight of a before becoming an after. She had been in the before of this road for six months, looking at bare branches, telling herself that spring was coming. And now spring was here, and the road was what it was supposed to be, and she was standing in it on a Friday morning with her bag of coursework books and no camera.
She took out her phone.
She took a photo. Not with the phone, which was not enough for this, but she stood in the road and let the morning have what it was and thought about the shape of the moment she had been imagining and understood that the imagined version had been wrong in one specific way: she had been imagining coming here with him. She had been imagining saying something here. She had been imagining the cherry blossom road as the location of the moment.
But the moment had already happened.
The moment had been February, at her kitchen table, in the ordinary middle of a Sunday evening, with their coursework open in front of them and the desk lamp on and the forty centimeters between their books.
She looked at the blossoms and thought: this is the after. I am already in the after.
She texted him: the blossoms came overnight. I'm on the road.
A response within two minutes: I know. I walked past on my way to the facility. I was going to tell you.
She smiled at this: he had seen the blossoms first and had been going to tell her, the way she had been going to come on Sunday and show him. Both of them separately witnessing the same transition.
She texted back: come now if you can.
His response: twenty minutes.
She found a bench at the side of the road, under the canopy, where the light came through the blossoms in the particular way of light through blossom, diffuse and pink-white, and she sat and waited.
---
He arrived in twenty-three minutes, which was close enough to twenty that she did not mention it.
He was in his jacket, the familiar jacket, zipped to the familiar point, with the careful quality he carried when he was moving toward something he intended to be fully present for. He sat down on the bench beside her and looked up at the blossoms the way he had looked up at bare branches in October: fully, without rushing the looking.
She looked at him looking.
She thought about October and the bare branches and: come now too. She thought about the promise in the snow and: come anyway. She thought about a year of coming toward this road and this morning, and the fact that the coming had been the point, not the arriving.
"Worth waiting for," he said.
"Yes," she said.
She took out her camera. She had brought it this morning after all, she realized: she had put it in her bag the night before when she noticed the buds were close, because some part of her had understood it was going to be today even if her planning had said Sunday.
She stood up and framed the road, the canopy, the light coming through. She took three photographs. She looked at them on the small screen and found them adequate and knew they would not capture what the morning felt like in person, which was true of most photographs of beautiful things.
She turned to him.
He was sitting on the bench with his hands in his pockets, watching her take photographs, in the easy way of someone watching a person they knew doing something they knew the person did.
"Come in," she said.
He looked at her.
"Into the frame," she said. "I want a photograph with you in it."
He stood up and came to where she was standing, which was in the middle of the road under the densest part of the canopy, and she stepped back to frame it and he stood in the road looking at her, and she looked at him through the viewfinder.
She had looked at him through a viewfinder before, she realized, or the equivalent of one: through lenses that were not hers but were what other people could see, Na-ri and Min-chae and the version of herself who had finally looked directly rather than around the edges. But this was the literal version: the camera, the frame, the small rectangle of glass through which she was composing him.
He was standing in the blossoms, looking at her.
She thought: this is going to be one of the ones I remember.
She took the photograph.
She lowered the camera.
He was still looking at her. She was still looking at him. The blossoms were falling, a few at a time, the way they fell when there was a light wind, and one landed on his shoulder and he did not move to brush it off.
She came closer to look at the photograph on the screen, and he came closer to look too, and they were standing close together looking at the small screen and the photograph on it, which showed him in the blossoms with the road behind him and the light coming through, and it was a good photograph, one of the better ones she had taken, and she was aware simultaneously of the photograph and of the fact that she was standing very close to him in the middle of the cherry blossom road at eight in the morning in March with blossoms falling around them.
She looked up from the screen.
He was looking at her from the distance at which she could see the specific quality of his attention, which was: complete, and present, and had been building toward this particular version of itself for ten years.
He said her name.
She thought: yes.
She thought: here it is.
She thought about the imagined version of this moment, in which she had been the one to say something. She thought about the February version, in which she had been the one to say it. She thought about the fact that this was a different moment: not the declaration but what came after the declaration, the first morning of the after, the first time they were standing on the cherry blossom road with the thing between them named and known.
She looked at him.
He kissed her.
Not tentative. Not questioning. The specific quality of something that had been decided before the doing of it, certain and present and real in the way of things that had been a long time becoming real.
It was brief. The road was public and it was a Friday morning and there were other people beginning to walk through. But it was complete, in the way that certain moments were complete, containing what they needed to contain without requiring anything added.
She looked at him after.
He looked at her.
She thought about Haejin and the snow and: come anyway. She thought about ten years of a system built through a wall. She thought about a year of Seoul and investigations and music boxes and kitchen tables.
She thought: come anyway.
He came.
She thought: and so did I.
She thought: this is the after.
She thought: yes.
The blossoms continued to fall around them, quiet and particular, and the road was what it had promised it would be, and Ha-eun held her camera and looked at the person she loved in the morning light of March and thought: I will remember this.
The moment of alwaysness.
She was already in it.
She knew it while she was in it.
That was enough.
That was the whole thing.
---
They were late for their respective morning commitments.
He had a nine o'clock practical session and she had a lecture, and they had stood on the cherry blossom road longer than they had intended, and when they finally came back to the path that forked toward their respective buildings they were both going to have to walk quickly.
"Friday evening," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"Dinner," she said.
"Yes," he said.
She looked at him.
He looked at her.
She thought: this is what the ordinary looks like now.
She thought: I like it.
She thought about the next ordinary thing, which was the walk to the medical building, and after that the lecture, and after that the week and the Haejin visit in March and the rest of the semester and the rest of the investigation and all the rest of it, and she thought: we are going to do all of it.
She thought: together.
She thought: yes.
She went to her lecture.
She was fourteen minutes late, which she had never been before, and she apologized briefly to the professor and found her seat and opened her notebook and began to take notes, and for the first hour of the lecture she was entirely present and attentive and competent, and somewhere around the second hour she looked out the window at the March morning light and thought: I walked under cherry blossoms this morning.
She thought: I took a photograph of him in them.
She thought: he kissed me in the middle of the road.
She thought: I am going to be a doctor.
She thought: I love him.
She thought all of these things in sequence, in the middle of a lecture, and then she went back to taking notes, and the morning continued, and the blossoms were on the road outside and would be there for another two weeks before they fell in earnest, and spring had arrived, and she was in it, and she was glad.
---
Min-chae texted her at noon: you're late.
Ha-eun looked at the text in the cafeteria, where she had sat down with food she was actually going to eat this time, at a table in the corner with enough quiet to think.
She texted back: I was on the cherry blossom road.
Min-chae's response was a single word: finally.
Ha-eun put her phone down and ate her lunch and thought about finally. She thought about the word and what it contained: the acknowledgment of time, of waiting, of the specific pleasure that arrival carried when arrival had been deferred long enough to earn the word. She thought about Min-chae, who had been watching this from September with the patience of someone who had decided not to say anything until Ha-eun was ready to hear it, and who had then said exactly the right things at exactly the right time.
She thought: I have good people around me.
She thought about Min-chae and Gyu-won and Do-hyun and her father, who was complicated and difficult and had made choices she was still assembling her feelings about, and who had also sent a music box at exactly the right moment, which was a form of love even if it was a strange one. She thought about her mother, who was somewhere in Haejin or somewhere else, who had kept a forty-seven minute recording for ten years and sent it when the time was right.
She thought: we are all trying to love each other in the best ways we know how.
She thought: some of our ways are better than others.
She thought: the work is learning which ways are the better ones.
She ate her lunch and went to the library after and worked for two hours on the paper that was due at the end of term, and in the evening she walked home past the cherry blossom road, which was still in full bloom, the canopy intact, the light through it still the specific rose-white of early spring, and she stopped and looked at it for a moment.
She thought about standing there in the morning with him.
She thought about the photograph on the screen and the blossom on his shoulder and the specific quality of him saying her name before he kissed her.
She thought: I will remember this for a long time.
She thought: yes.
She walked home.
---
Friday evening dinner was at his apartment.
Ha-eun brought vegetables from the market she passed on her way, because she had been walking home past the market for several months and had developed a habit of stopping there when she had time, and today she had time and the cabbage looked good and she thought about the recipe she wanted to try.
He let her into his kitchen without comment, which was the normal condition: she came in and used his kitchen as her own and he stood in the doorway between the kitchen and the main room and occasionally asked questions about what she was making.
"What are you making," he said.
"Something with the cabbage," she said.
"I have rice," he said.
"I know," she said.
They cooked the way they always cooked, which was with the specific kitchen language they had developed over months, the knowledge of where things were and what the other person needed before they asked. She made something with cabbage and tofu and the specific combination of soy and sesame she had learned to like in Seoul, and he made rice in the way he made rice, which was always perfect because he timed it precisely, and they set two bowls on his small table and sat down.
He looked at her across the table.
She looked at him.
Neither of them said anything for a moment.
She thought: this is the same table.
She thought: and it is completely different from the table it was before yesterday.
She thought: the same. Different. Both.
She said: "Today was good."
He said: "Yes."
She said: "The road."
He said: "Yes."
They ate.
It was the most ordinary dinner of the year, and the most significant, and it was both of these simultaneously because that was what the after was: the ordinary with the thing named inside it, the same surface containing a different weight.
She thought about Gyu-won and the Haejin visit and the last piece of the investigation and everything that was still coming. She thought about second year and what it was going to be, the harder rotations, the longer hours, the decisions that were going to matter more. She thought about the year behind them and what it had built.
She thought about what it meant to have someone beside you while you were building.
"When do you want to go to Haejin," she said.
"Next weekend," he said. "If that works."
"Yes," she said.
They talked about the logistics: train or bus, morning or afternoon, whether to call ahead or simply arrive. They talked about what they were going to say. She said: we say the truth, we say what we know, we listen to what we don't know yet. He said: yes.
She looked at him over the table and thought about next weekend and a clinic in Haejin and a man who had carried a nine-year-old out of a burning building and then spent ten years managing consequences and was still alive and probably not ready for this visit.
She thought: none of us are completely ready.
She thought: we go anyway.
"Come anyway," she said, out loud, without having planned to.
He looked at her.
She looked at him.
He understood what she was referencing. She saw him understand it: the snow and the awning and the harbor lights and a promise.
He said: "Yes."
She thought: he came.
She thought: yes.
He came.
She ate the rest of her dinner and he ate the rest of his and they did the dishes together and she went home at a reasonable hour and she sat at her desk and wrote in the dated section of the clinical journal: March. Second year second semester, week six. The blossoms came. We were on the road. Friday evening: dinner, next weekend, Haejin. The investigation is almost complete. The thing I have been building all year is named.
She looked at the last line.
She thought: yes.
She thought about the investigation and the visit and the remaining questions and what came after all of it. She thought about the full year behind her: September, October, November, December, January, February, March. She thought about a year as a unit of time and how much it could contain.
She thought about the cherry blossom road in bloom.
She thought about: the moment of always.
She thought about the things she would remember.
She thought: most of them.
She thought: more than I expected.
She closed the journal.
She knocked on the wall.
Three knocks back, steady and immediate, the same as always, the specific quality of a signal that had been exchanged so many times that it no longer required thought, that was a form of knowing rather than a form of communication.
She lay down.
She thought about spring, which had arrived.
She thought about what came next, which she did not entirely know but was going toward.
She thought: yes.
She fell asleep.
