She opened the envelope that evening, after Do-hyun went back to his apartment.
Not because she was hiding it. She had shown him the envelope. They had looked at it together over breakfast, the physical object acknowledged and present. But when he picked up his bag to leave for his afternoon session, he had said: open it when you're ready. She had not protested. She had wanted to be alone when she saw what was inside.
She waited until seven.
She set it on the table under the kitchen light and looked at it for a moment. Then she lifted the flap.
A single folded piece of paper. Inside: a Busan address, a street name, an apartment number. Below the address, in Seong-jin's handwriting: She's been waiting for you to come. She doesn't know you're ready yet.
Ha-eun sat very still.
Her mother was in Busan.
Not missing. Not gone. In Busan, in an apartment with a specific address on a specific street, waiting for a daughter who had grown up not knowing where to find her.
She held the paper and thought about the postcard, the music box, the recording. All the things her mother had sent toward her over the years rather than coming directly. She thought about a woman who had known where Ha-eun was and had chosen proximity through objects rather than through presence.
She thought about Seong-jin saying: she doesn't know you're ready yet.
She thought: who decides when someone is ready.
She thought: I have been deciding that for other people all year.
She put the paper down.
She thought about texting Do-hyun. She reached for her phone. She set it down again.
She sat at the table for a long time.
The thing she was circling, the thing she could not quite name directly, was this: her mother was a specific and living person in a specific location, and deciding what to do with that fact required time she did not want to take in front of someone else. She was not withholding from Do-hyun. She was not choosing to protect him from the information or manage when he received it. She was choosing to need one night alone with something profoundly personal before she brought it into the shared space.
She told herself this.
She examined the distinction carefully.
She was not entirely sure the distinction was as clear as she was making it.
---
She texted Gyu-won instead of Do-hyun.
Not because Gyu-won was the right person to tell, necessarily, but because Gyu-won was someone who understood what it was to find an address in an envelope and sit alone with what it meant. He had done something like this with his father's notebook: found something, sat with it, made the decision about what to do.
She took a photograph of the address and sent it. She said: Seong-jin gave me this. My mother is in Busan.
He responded within a few minutes: are you going to go.
She typed: I don't know yet.
Gyu-won: do you want to.
She looked at this question. She thought about Busan, which she had been to twice, both times for academic things, a conference with her father when she was sixteen and a campus visit during university application season. She thought about a city that now contained her mother.
She typed: yes.
Gyu-won: alone or with Do-hyun.
She did not answer immediately.
She set the phone down and went to the window and looked at the street. The street was doing what it always did. She looked at it for a while without seeing it.
She picked up the phone.
She typed: I think alone first. She put the phone down before she could add: I know what that sounds like.
Gyu-won's response came a minute later: you know what you need. Just tell him where you're going.
She stared at the message.
She typed: yes.
She meant it when she typed it.
She went to bed and lay in the dark and thought about the distinction she had been drawing: needing the first encounter to be alone was different from concealing the encounter. She was going to tell Do-hyun. She was going to tell him about the address and about wanting to go alone. She was going to be transparent about the choice.
This was the right version. This was the version that was honest rather than withholding.
She fell asleep believing this.
---
She planned to tell him at breakfast the next day.
She made eggs and toast because she had woken up early enough to make actual breakfast, which she did occasionally when something required the physical activity of preparation. She waited until he knocked, at the usual time, and let him in and gave him coffee and they sat at the table.
She said: "I read the address in the envelope last night."
He looked up.
"My mother is in Busan," she said. "Seong-jin gave me an address."
He was quiet for a moment. "How are you," he said.
"Processing," she said. "I want to go. I think I want to go alone."
He looked at her. She held the look. She was waiting for the response, watching to see what form it took.
He said: "Okay."
She looked at him.
"It's your mother," he said. "The first time you see her after eighteen years should be whatever you need it to be."
She felt something in her chest that was complicated: relief at his response, and underneath the relief, a smaller thing, a question she had not expected. She had been prepared to explain herself, to defend the choice, to show her reasoning for why this was different from the pattern. He had simply said okay.
She thought: is this what trust looks like, or is this something else.
She thought about Na-ri: two people who understand each other completely and are also each managing alone.
She pushed the thought aside. He had said okay. She was going to go alone and he had understood immediately. This was the right outcome.
"Thank you," she said.
"Let me know when you're back," he said.
She said she would.
---
She booked the train for the following Saturday. She did not tell him the specific day immediately, which she noticed but told herself was simply because she had not decided when she was going when she mentioned it. When she booked the train on Tuesday, she sent him a text: going to Busan this Saturday.
He replied: okay. Safe travels.
Two words. She looked at them and thought about what they communicated: acknowledgment, acceptance, the absence of follow-up questions. She thought: this is him trusting me. This is exactly what she had wanted.
She texted back: thank you.
She put her phone in her pocket and went to her afternoon lecture and sat in her usual seat and took her usual notes and did not think about the Saturday trip for most of the lecture.
She thought about it during the last fifteen minutes.
She thought: I have told him where I'm going and that I'm going alone and he has accepted this without question. This is the right version of the situation. I am not withholding anything.
She thought: then why does something feel slightly off.
She thought: it's the first time. Going to see her mother for the first time after eighteen years is going to feel slightly off in all its surrounding moments. That's appropriate.
She accepted this.
She went home and had dinner with Do-hyun, which was normal and warm and easy, and she told him about the lecture and he told her about the simulation assessment and they talked about Gyu-won's plan for the summer and about whether they should try to visit the clinic in Haejin again before the semester ended.
The trip to Busan did not come up.
Not because she was avoiding it. Because it had already been mentioned and acknowledged and there was nothing more to say until after it happened.
She told herself this was true.
She went to bed uncertain whether it was.
She knocked once on the wall.
One knock back.
She fell asleep.
On Saturday she packed a small bag and took the train to Busan, and the train moved through the country at its usual speed, and Ha-eun sat by the window with a textbook she did not open and thought about eighteen years and what they contained and what she was about to walk toward, and she thought: ready.
She thought: I think so.
She thought: I'm going anyway.
The city of Busan appeared at the window, large and coastal and full of hills, and somewhere in it was an apartment with a cactus on the windowsill she had not yet seen, and her mother.
---
Busan was warmer than Seoul in May.
She noticed this on the walk from the station: the specific quality of a port city's air, salt-tinged and slightly humid, different from the Seoul air she had been breathing for eight months. She had been to Busan twice before, both times briefly, both times in other contexts, and she had not retained much about either visit except a general impression of hills and ocean and the kind of city that felt like it was doing things in multiple directions simultaneously.
She found the address without difficulty. The neighborhood was residential and quiet, removed from the areas tourists or students would know, the streets lined with small apartment buildings and the particular shops that served specific communities: a laundry, a grocery, a small pharmacy. The kind of neighborhood where people lived rather than visited.
She stood on the sidewalk outside the building for eight minutes. She counted.
She thought about what she was going to say. She had thought about it on the train and had arrived at: nothing planned. She was going to let the conversation go where it went.
She thought about the question she had asked Do-hyun on the train to Haejin: we can just go and listen. She had said this specifically for him. She had not expected to need it for herself.
She pressed the buzzer.
---
The door opened on the second ring.
Han Seo-jin was smaller than Ha-eun remembered. Or Ha-eun was larger. Probably both. The woman in the doorway had her mother's face filtered through eighteen years, the same structure but with more in the lines of it, the specific quality of a face that had spent years working through something.
They looked at each other.
Ha-eun's mother said: "You look like your father."
Ha-eun said: "I get that a lot."
Seo-jin smiled. It was her mother's smile, which Ha-eun recognized from a photograph she kept in a box, and the recognition was disorienting in the way that grown versions of childhood memories were always disorienting.
"Come in," her mother said.
---
The apartment was small and organized, with a cactus on the windowsill that had been there long enough to grow three inches of new growth since its last repotting. A bookshelf taking up one wall. A desk with medical reference books that Ha-eun recognized because she owned several of the same ones.
Her mother made tea. Ha-eun sat at the table and looked at the apartment and thought about what you could tell about a person from the space they made for themselves: her mother had made a space that was self-contained and functional and not without warmth, a space with the cactus and the books and a small framed photograph on the shelf that Ha-eun did not examine yet.
They drank tea.
Seo-jin explained: she had left because she was afraid. Not only afraid for herself, though that was real, but afraid that staying would put people at risk. She had the recording. She knew what it meant. She had understood that Seong-jin was capable of the decisions he had made, and she did not know how far those decisions would extend.
"I was a coward in some ways," she said. "I was also not wrong that leaving was safer."
Ha-eun sat with this. She thought about the difference between those two things: being right and being cowardly at the same time. She thought about her father, who had stayed and made different choices. She thought about Seong-jin, who had stayed and made others. None of them had made perfect choices. The question, she was starting to understand, was not what the perfect choice would have been but what each person could live with.
She asked the question she had been carrying since the postcard: "Did you know I was in Seoul."
"Yes," her mother said. "From your father."
"And you sent the postcard."
"Each year," her mother said. "On the anniversary. I did not know how to say anything directly so I said nothing. But I wanted you to know I remembered."
Ha-eun thought about the postcard. The cherry blossom road. No message. She had been angry about the no message at the time. She understood it differently now: some people communicated presence without knowing how to communicate words. She had a version of this in herself.
She said: "I got the music box. And the recording."
"I know," her mother said. "I asked your father to send it when I thought the time was right." She looked at her hands. "I was trying to give you what you needed to understand what happened without having to see me first. I thought if you understood it, you might be more willing to see me."
Ha-eun thought about this. It was protective and also slightly backwards: give the explanation before the relationship, hoping the explanation would make the relationship possible. She recognized the logic. She had used versions of it herself.
"It worked," she said. "I'm here."
Her mother looked at her.
"I don't know what we are yet," Ha-eun said. "But I came. That's a start."
Seo-jin nodded.
They sat for another two hours. Ha-eun asked questions she had been holding for years and her mother answered them, not all fully, not all easily, but honestly enough that Ha-eun felt she was getting the real account rather than the managed one. She thought about how rare that was. She thought about how much of the year had been spent in managed accounts.
When she stood to leave, her mother stood too and walked her to the door.
At the door Seo-jin said: "The photograph on the shelf. The small one. It's from your birthday. The third one, I think."
Ha-eun turned and looked at the shelf. The photograph was small and slightly faded: a child of three at a table with a cake, a woman behind the child with her hands on the child's shoulders. She recognized neither of them and both of them simultaneously.
She looked at her mother.
She thought: we are both here.
She thought: it is not enough and it is also something.
She thought: yes.
She said goodbye and went down the stairs and out into the Busan afternoon and walked toward the station with the specific quality of someone who had done something significant and was carrying the significance of it through a city that did not know and did not need to.
On the train back she opened her textbook. She read four pages. She took notes. She was very good at returning to the ordinary after the extraordinary, which was a skill medicine required and which she had been building all year.
She thought about Do-hyun.
She thought: I am going to tell him everything. Tonight.
She thought: not some of it. Everything.
She thought: yes.
She texted him from the train: heading back. Can I come over when I get in.
He replied: yes.
She looked at the single word and thought about someone who waited at crossroads and said yes without conditions.
She thought: I am going to deserve this.
She thought: I am going to be the version of myself that deserves it.
She put her phone in her pocket and watched the country go past the window and thought about eighteen years and a cactus and a photograph and a woman who had communicated presence through postcards because she had not known how to communicate herself.
She thought: I know that person.
She thought: I am trying to be different from that person.
She thought: I think I'm getting better at it.
The train moved toward Seoul.
She was ready.
---
She told him everything.
He was already home when she arrived, had made tea, and she came in and sat at his small table and did not take off her jacket yet, which was the body language of someone who had something to say before settling in, and he read this immediately and sat down across from her and waited.
She started with the address, which he already knew about, and moved to the apartment and the cactus and the three-year-old in the photograph and what her mother had explained about leaving. She told him about the question she had asked: did you leave to protect us or to protect yourself. She told him her mother's answer: both. She told him what it was like to sit for two hours with someone she had not seen in eighteen years and feel simultaneously that the distance was enormous and that the person across the table was recognizable.
She told him all of it.
He listened without interrupting. When she finished, the tea had gone slightly cold and she had been talking for nearly half an hour and the quality of the room had changed from when she arrived, had become more settled, as if the telling had taken up the right amount of space and was now resting in place.
"How are you," he said.
"Somewhere between sad and something that isn't sad," she said. "Not happy. But not only sad."
He nodded.
"She's been waiting for years," Ha-eun said. "She just didn't know how to cross the distance." She looked at her tea. "I understand that better than I expected to."
He was looking at her with the full-attention look.
"I understand it because I do versions of it," she said. "I create distances and then manage them rather than closing them. I'm better at it than I was in September. But I still do it."
He said: "Yes."
She looked at him. "You're not going to argue with me."
"No," he said. "Because you're right. And because I do versions of it too."
She thought about the balcony. She thought about things he was still holding separately.
"I know," she said.
They sat with the mutual recognition for a moment, which was not comfortable exactly, but was the correct kind of discomfort, the kind that came from seeing clearly rather than from being hurt.
"I'm glad you told me," he said.
"So am I," she said. "I almost didn't. Not because I was going to hide it. Because I kept telling myself I needed more time to process it. And then I realized I was using process as a substitute for share."
He looked at her.
She said: "I think I've been doing that a lot. Using the time it takes me to understand something as a reason to not give it to you until I've understood it. Which is not the same as together."
He was quiet.
She said: "I'm sorry for the times this year when I did that and I told myself it was something else."
He received this the way he received the genuine apologies: completely, without minimizing them and without making more of them than they were. "I know you were trying," he said.
"Yes," she said. "And also doing the thing. Both."
"Yes," he said.
They sat for a while longer. She eventually took off her jacket. He heated the tea. They talked about her mother and about Haejin and about the summer and what came next for the investigation, which was close to its conclusion, the full picture assembled enough to know what it was.
She went home at midnight and sat at her desk and wrote in her clinical journal: Busan. I told him everything tonight. Not after. During. The same night.
She looked at this.
She wrote: I think this is what I am supposed to be.
She closed the journal.
Three knocks.
Three knocks back immediately.
She went to sleep.
You've reached the end of this chapter

She booked the train for the following Saturday.
