She noticed the balcony on a Wednesday in mid-May.
She had been to his apartment many times and did not typically inventory the details, because the details of a familiar place became background rather than foreground over time. But she arrived on Wednesday with food she had picked up from the market and set the bags on his counter and turned around and saw: the sliding door to the balcony, which was normally open in the evenings now that the weather permitted it, was shut. Sealed, in fact, with a strip of draft-stopper tape along the bottom seam and another along the side where the door met the frame.
She looked at it.
She put the food away and started cooking and did not say anything.
Dinner. He ate. They talked about the end of semester, which was coming, and about the summer research position he was applying for and about a paper she had been asked to review for the third-year seminar. Normal topics. She kept thinking about the balcony.
She said, as casually as she could manage, which was fairly casually: "Did something happen to the balcony."
He looked at the balcony, then at her. "There was a draft," he said. "It was keeping me awake."
She looked at the balcony. She had sat on that balcony three times, at least. She had not noticed a draft. She thought about whether there could be a draft she had not noticed. She decided to accept the answer.
"Okay," she said.
She went home that night and stood at her window and thought about the balcony.
He stood on the balcony when he was thinking through large things. She had noticed this in March and April, the specific quality of his presence there: standing and looking out and being with whatever he was with. She had not catalogued it explicitly but she had understood it the way she understood most things about him, through the accumulation of observation.
The balcony was where he went when he needed to stand with something large.
He had sealed the balcony.
---
She mentioned it to Gyu-won.
They were meeting for coffee, the three of them, but Do-hyun was late because of a practical that had run over, and she and Gyu-won had twenty minutes alone. She told him about the sealed balcony and the draft-stopper tape and what she knew about how Do-hyun used that space.
Gyu-won listened. He said: "Have you asked him about it directly."
"Once. He said there was a draft."
"And you think that's not the full reason."
"I think it's possible that he needed somewhere in the apartment that was only his," she said. "Somewhere that wasn't shared space."
Gyu-won considered this. "Does that concern you."
She thought about the question. "Yes and no," she said. "I understand needing space. What concerns me is that he didn't say that. He said there was a draft."
Gyu-won looked at her with the expression he used when he was about to say something accurate that she might not want to hear. "You've been working on being transparent this year," he said. "You've gotten significantly better at it. Do you think there's any possibility that the transparency you've been practicing has made him feel more monitored rather than more together."
Ha-eun stared at him.
"Not intentionally," he said quickly. "I'm not saying you've done something wrong. I'm saying that when someone becomes more open with you, the gap between their openness and yours can become more visible. Maybe he's sealing things off because he's aware of how much you can read and he's not sure how to be in that."
Ha-eun sat with this.
She thought about Na-ri saying: two people who understand each other completely and are also each managing alone. She thought about whether her transparency this year had created, as a side effect, more awareness on his side of what he was not sharing.
She thought: I became more open and he became more contained.
She thought: that could be coincidence or it could be connected.
Do-hyun arrived five minutes later, slightly out of breath from walking fast, and they had the rest of the coffee meeting which was about the investigation and summer plans, and the balcony did not come up, and Ha-eun watched him across the table and thought about the seal and the tape and what Gyu-won had said.
---
Three days later she asked him directly.
Not about the balcony specifically. More generally. She had been sitting on his floor after dinner, which they did sometimes in the evenings when neither of them felt like sitting at the table, and he was near the window and she was near the bookshelf, and she said: "Is there something you're working through that you're doing alone."
He looked at her.
She said: "I'm not asking you to tell me what it is if you're not ready. I'm asking if there is something. Because I've been noticing that you've been slightly somewhere else this month and I wanted to name that I've noticed."
He was quiet for a moment.
"Yes," he said.
She waited.
"It's not about us," he said. "Or not primarily. It's about the Haejin visit and what it brought up. About my father and what I'm deciding about him and what I'm deciding about some things in general." He looked at the window. "I sealed the balcony because I needed somewhere to stand with it that wasn't shared space."
She held this.
She thought about the draft explanation. She thought about what had shifted between that conversation and this one: she had asked once and accepted the answer and waited, and three days later he had told her the actual thing.
"Thank you," she said.
"I know it's the thing you've been working on," he said. "The transparency. I'm aware that what I'm doing looks like the opposite."
"It does," she said honestly.
"I'm not hiding it," he said. "I'm just not ready to share it yet. That's different."
She thought about this distinction. She had claimed the same distinction herself, in October, in November, in March. She had been right sometimes and wrong sometimes. The distinction was real and also the most comfortable thing to tell yourself when you were doing the other version.
"I know the distinction," she said. "I also know it's easy to be wrong about which one you're doing."
He looked at her. "Yes," he said. "You're right about that."
She said: "Can you tell me one thing. Just one. Something you're holding."
He was quiet for a long moment.
Then he said: "I've been thinking about the fact that my father decided I was better off without him. And I keep catching myself wondering if I do the same thing. Not about you. About everyone. Whether there's some version of 'you're better off without my full mess' that I operate with."
Ha-eun looked at him.
She thought about the balcony. She thought about contained. She thought about Na-ri's description: still excellent, but more contained.
She said: "I think you do that sometimes."
He nodded.
"I don't think you're better off without your full mess," she said. "I think the mess is part of you. And I'm here for the whole thing."
He looked at her. Something in his expression was doing something, a quality she had not seen before, a very small fracture in the surface of the controlled face, not breaking but visible.
"I know," he said. "I'm working on knowing it the way you're working on knowing what I said about being loved."
She thought: we are working on parallel versions of the same thing.
She thought: he knows what I need and I know what he needs and we are both still learning to believe the other person actually means it.
She thought: this is the specific work of being in love with someone.
She thought: yes.
She said: "Unseal the balcony when you're ready."
He looked at it.
"No rush," she said.
He nodded.
They sat for a while longer, both of them near the respective sides of the room, in the comfortable proximity that was also a slightly different proximity than it had been six weeks ago. Not worse. Different. More honest about the parts that were still in process.
She went home.
She thought: we are both still in process.
She thought: that is not a problem.
She thought: yes.
---
A week later the balcony was still sealed, but he started leaving the door open a crack when she was there.
She noticed this on Thursday, when she came over in the evening and the sliding door was open perhaps five centimeters, enough to let the May air through but not enough to technically be open. She sat on the floor near the window and felt the air come through and did not comment on it.
He did not comment on it either.
But it was there.
She thought about it on the way home, the five-centimeter opening, and what it communicated: I am not ready to unseal it entirely, but I am trying to let something in. She thought about the specific form of his movement: incremental, visible, not announced. She had learned to read these movements from him, the small adjustments he made when he was working toward something, the physical evidence of internal process that he did not always have words for yet.
She thought: he is working on it.
She thought: yes.
She thought about her own version of this: the October when she had started thinking about telling Do-hyun things, the slow closing of the gap between what she knew and what she shared. Months of incremental movement before she arrived at the person who could say: I went to Busan tonight. I'm going to tell you now.
She thought: we move slowly.
She thought: but we move.
---
She brought this to Min-chae.
Not as a worry, not as something she needed help with, but as an observation she wanted to speak out loud to see what it sounded like. She and Min-chae had coffee on Sunday morning, which they had been doing since February, a standing arrangement that neither of them had explicitly proposed but had simply begun and continued.
She said: "He sealed the balcony and then started leaving it open five centimeters. I think that's progress."
Min-chae looked at her with the expression that meant she was genuinely pleased about something. "You're describing a five-centimeter door gap as progress," she said. "With affection rather than frustration."
Ha-eun thought about this. "Yes," she said.
"That's different from September," Min-chae said.
"September I would have been looking for what it meant about whether something was wrong," Ha-eun said. "Now I'm reading it as a signal of where he is and trusting that he knows the pace he needs."
Min-chae nodded. "You've learned to read him without needing it to be about you."
Ha-eun sat with this. It was accurate in a way she had not quite articulated to herself. She had spent years reading Do-hyun's signals, and in September and October she had been reading them through a lens of: what does this mean about what I should do, what does this mean about whether I need to act, what does this mean for the territory between us. Now she was reading them differently: what does this say about where he is, what does he need from this space, what is his process telling me about him as a person, separately from what it means for them together.
"Yes," she said. "That's it."
"That's a significant development," Min-chae said. "It means you can be with him without it always being about the relationship."
Ha-eun looked at her coffee.
"The relationship is its own thing," Min-chae said. "But it's not the only thing. And being able to hold both, what's happening with him and what's happening with the two of you, without collapsing them into each other, that's what makes it possible to be with someone for a long time."
Ha-eun thought about long time.
She thought about Haejin and Seoul and everything that had passed between them in this particular year, and she thought about the years before this one, ten years of proximity without the vocabulary they now had, and she thought about the years ahead, which she could not see specifically but could see in rough outline: both of them becoming the people they were becoming, in their respective fields, in this city or another one, with the investigation resolved and the history understood and the next stage of everything in front of them.
She thought: I want the long time.
She thought: I think I am going to get it.
She thought: yes.
She finished her coffee and talked with Min-chae about the end of semester and about summer plans and about a research paper Min-chae was writing that was genuinely interesting, and on the way home she walked past the cherry blossom road, which was in full green leaf now, no trace of the spring blossoms, a road she would not recognize from the photographs she had taken in March.
She thought: the same road.
She thought: completely different.
She thought: this is how it works.
She went home and spent the afternoon on her paper and in the evening Do-hyun knocked and they ate together and afterward sat on his floor near the window with the balcony open six centimeters now, one more than the previous visit, and neither of them mentioned this, but both of them knew.
She thought: this is progress.
She thought: yes.
She thought: we are going to get there.
She went home at ten and knocked on the wall and got three knocks back and fell asleep thinking about the summer and what came after and all the things that were still in motion, and none of it was frightening.
None of it was frightening, which was, she realized in the moment before sleep took her, a remarkable thing.
She thought: yes.
That was the thing.
None of it was frightening anymore.
---
On Thursday the balcony was fully open.
She arrived in the evening with the report she had been meaning to share with him, the one that contained the final analysis of the Myeonghwa investigation materials, the summary document she and Gyu-won had been working toward all year. She set it on the table and he looked at it and then looked at her.
"Tonight," she said. "If you're ready."
He looked at the document. He looked at the balcony, which was open, which he had opened himself at some point before she arrived.
"Tonight," he said.
They sat at the table and went through it together. The full picture: the building, the certification, the pressure on Nam Sung-rok, the response timeline, the recording, the photograph of Park Hyeon-gi, the supplementary statement, the decade of managed aftermath. All of it assembled into a document that had a beginning and a shape and an endpoint.
She had written most of it. Gyu-won had reviewed it. Do-hyun had read sections she had shared with him along the way. But reading it as a whole document, in sequence, was different from knowing the parts.
They read in silence.
When they finished, he sat back and looked at the ceiling for a moment.
She waited.
He said: "It's complete."
"Yes," she said.
"What do we do with it."
"We decide," she said. "Together."
He looked at her. He said: "I want it to matter. I want the people who made these decisions to be accountable for them. But I also don't know what that accountability looks like after ten years and prison sentences and people who are already carrying the cost."
She thought about this. She thought about her father's role, which was complicated. She thought about Park Hyeon-gi, who had cooperated in covering something and had signed a statement that had allowed the cover to hold. She thought about Seong-jin, who had spent years paying the cost.
"We can talk to Dr. Lee," she said. "He said the formal record and the survivor accounts had never been reconciled. This reconciles them. What happens after is not up to us."
"No," he said.
"We found it," she said. "We can give it to the right people. What they do with it is theirs."
He was quiet for a moment.
"Yes," he said. "That's right."
He looked at the balcony.
"I opened it tonight because I decided I was done using it as a container for things I was managing alone," he said. "I thought it should coincide with finishing this."
She looked at him.
He said: "I've been working through what I said about doing what my father did. Deciding things on other people's behalf. I don't think I'm done working through it. But I think I'm done sealing rooms because of it."
She thought: there it is.
She thought: he arrived at it himself.
She thought: yes.
She said: "I'm glad."
He looked at her. She looked at him. The balcony behind him was open, the May evening air coming through, the city sounds in the background.
She thought: this is one of the ones I will remember.
She thought: yes.
This one.
They stayed at the table for another hour, talking about what came next, about Dr. Lee and about the summer and about Gyu-won's situation and about the second visit to Seong-jin that Do-hyun had decided, quietly, that he wanted to make. She listened and responded and they talked in the specific way they talked now, with the year of accumulated trust underneath everything, not needing to establish the ground rules because they were already standing on them.
She went home at eleven.
She stood at the window and looked at the street and thought about the balcony and the document and what came next.
She thought: the investigation is done.
She thought: we are still here.
She thought: both of those things are true and both of them matter.
She thought: yes.
She knocked on the wall.
Three knocks back.
She went to bed.
You've reached the end of this chapter
She noticed the balcony on a Wednesday in mid-May.
