August arrived with the specific quality of Seoul in late summer: humid and heavy, the city moving slightly slower than its usual pace, the heat from the concrete rising in the afternoons. Ha-eun had started her rotation at the teaching hospital in the Mapo district, which meant a forty-minute commute each way and a schedule that began earlier and ended later than the first-year pattern.
She saw Do-hyun on the evenings she had the energy for it, which was three or four times a week. He had moved deeper into his research placement, working on specific case analyses for the firm, coming home later than he had in June and July. Their schedules had been parallel and now they were convergent: crossing at the evenings rather than having the same general rhythm.
She found this comfortable.
She found it comfortable and also noticed that she found it comfortable, which was itself worth noticing. In September she had measured the evening by whether he was available, had organized the parts of her day around the likelihood of contact. Now the evenings were the evenings, and whether he was there was part of them but not the structure of them.
She thought: I have become someone who can have my own evenings.
She thought: this is also a form of together.
She thought: yes.
---
On a Thursday in mid-August she came home from the rotation at seven fifteen and found a note under her door.
She had not received a note under the door before. She looked at it for a moment, then picked it up.
It was from Do-hyun, which she could tell from the handwriting before she read it. He had a specific way of writing that she had seen on notes and margins and notebooks throughout the year. The note said: I made too much again. Come over if you want. If you're tired, don't worry about it. The food will keep.
She looked at the note.
She thought about how different this was from the early dinners, which had had a quality of: we are going to eat together, the being together was the purpose. This note had a different quality: there is food, you are welcome, the choice is entirely yours, and either outcome is fine.
She thought: that is what it looks like when someone loves you without needing something back.
She thought: yes.
She went.
She came in and sat at the table and he served the food and they ate and she told him about the rotation, about a case that had been difficult and a procedure she had been asked to assist with that had gone well, and he listened and asked questions and it was the ordinary version of their evenings, simple and warm.
After dinner she washed and he dried and she thought: this is what he said. Less building toward and more being in.
She thought: yes.
She thought: we are in it.
She thought: this is good.
She thought: it is also somehow slightly off.
She stood at the sink and thought about slightly off. She thought about what she was feeling, which was not dissatisfaction and not distance and not any of the things she had worried about in the before. It was something smaller and more specific, something she could not quite name.
She rinsed the last bowl and handed it to him.
She thought about the year. She thought about the investigation and the shared purpose and the specific texture of working toward something together. She thought about the structure that had been removed.
She thought: maybe this is what it feels like when the structure is gone and you're looking at what you are without it.
She thought: maybe that is what slightly off is.
---
She thought about this for several days.
She let it be a question rather than a problem. She had learned, over the year, that some things needed time before they were clear, and that making them into problems before they were clear was the wrong approach.
She thought about what the year had been: a shared purpose had brought them together in a new way, had given their proximity a structure and a direction and a set of stakes. The purpose was now complete. The structure was gone. And what they were without it was... what they had always been, mostly, but without the particular kind of engagement that comes from working toward something.
She thought: is that enough.
She thought: of course it is enough. I love him. He loves me. The structure was not the reason.
She thought: yes. But.
She thought about the but.
The but was this: they had become, over the course of the year, very good at being together in a specific mode. The mode of two people investigating something, managing something, working toward something. They had become excellent at the careful version of together. And now the careful version was not required, and what was required instead was the simpler version, the just-being version, and she was not sure she knew how to do that as well as she knew how to do the other.
She thought: this might be the actual crack.
She thought: not a lie, not a betrayal, not a pattern of withholding. Just: we are very good at the hard version and now we need to learn the easy version.
She thought: that sounds like a manageable problem.
She thought: it might also be harder than it sounds.
She went to see Min-chae.
She told her about the slightly off feeling and the structure being removed and the question she was carrying.
Min-chae listened. When she finished, Min-chae said: "Have you told him."
"Not yet," Ha-eun said.
Min-chae looked at her.
Ha-eun said: "I know."
Min-chae said: "Yes."
Ha-eun said: "I've been waiting to understand it better first."
Min-chae said, very gently: "Ha-eun."
Ha-eun said: "I know."
Min-chae said: "You said that was the thing you were going to stop doing."
Ha-eun looked at the table. She thought about all the conversations she had had about patterns. She thought about how easy it was to notice a pattern in retrospect and how hard it was to catch it in the moment.
She said: "I'm going to tell him tonight."
Min-chae said: "Same night."
Ha-eun thought about her mother's definition. She thought about: not trying to prove anything, just there. She thought about how being just there included being there with the things you were uncertain about, not just the things you had already resolved.
She said: "Yes. Same night."
---
She went to his apartment that evening.
He opened the door and she came in and sat at the table and she said: "I need to tell you something I've been thinking about for a few days."
He sat down.
She told him. She told him about the slightly off feeling and about the structure being removed and about the question she had been carrying about whether they knew how to be together without a shared purpose organizing the being. She told him plainly, in the order she had thought it, without managing his reaction in advance.
He listened.
When she finished, he was quiet for a long time.
She sat with the quiet and did not fill it.
He said: "I've been thinking about the same thing."
She looked at him.
He said: "I didn't name it the same way. But something similar. Since the investigation finished, I've been wondering whether what we're very good at being is the version of us that's in the middle of something hard. And whether we know how to be the version that isn't."
She looked at him.
He said: "That's not a doubt about us. It's a question about a skill we haven't had as much practice with."
She thought: yes.
She thought: that is exactly it.
She said: "I think it's learnable."
He said: "Yes."
She said: "I think we're already doing it. I just didn't have language for what it felt like to not be sure we were doing it right."
He said: "The slightly off is not wrong."
She said: "No. It's just the new thing we're learning."
He looked at her with the full-attention look. He said: "Thank you for telling me tonight."
She said: "Same night."
He almost smiled. "Yes," he said. "Same night."
She thought: we are learning the easy version.
She thought: it is also hard.
She thought: but we are learning it.
She thought: yes.
She went home late. Three knocks. Three knocks back.
She went to sleep.
She thought: tomorrow.
She thought: yes.
She thought: always tomorrow.
She thought: and today.
---
She thought about slightly off for several more days after the conversation.
Not because the conversation had not resolved it. It had resolved it in the way that naming something always resolved part of it: she had given it words and he had recognized the words as accurate and they had agreed it was something they were learning rather than something wrong. The conversation was good.
But the feeling itself was still present, in a smaller form, and she let it be present because she had learned not to try to eliminate feelings by analyzing them out of existence. Some things needed to be inhabited rather than solved.
She inhabited it.
She went to work at the rotation and came home and saw him several times a week and went to see her mother in Busan for a third visit that was shorter than the second and more specific: they talked about her father and about what the review process might involve and about what Ha-eun wanted from the relationship with her mother in the years ahead. She went alone and told him when she was back and what had been said. He listened and received it and that was what it was.
She noticed, in the weeks of August, that she was getting better at the easy version.
Not perfectly. But better. She had evenings alone that were simply evenings alone, not weighted with the significance of his absence or the question of whether the absence meant something. She had evenings with him that were simply evenings with him, eating food and talking about their respective days and being in the same room without needing the room to be about anything beyond itself.
She thought: this is the being in.
She thought: I am getting better at it.
She thought: he is too.
She thought about a specific evening in late August when she had come home exhausted from the rotation and had knocked on his wall without a reason beyond: I am home and exhausted and I want to know you are there. He had knocked back. She had not gone over. He had not come over. But both of them knew the other was there, and that had been enough.
She thought: that is also a form of together.
She thought: yes.
She thought about the note under the door: the food will keep, come over if you want. The specific form of his love that did not require a response, that extended itself without condition and waited without pressure.
She thought: I am learning to receive this.
She thought: yes.
She thought: and I am learning to do this.
She thought: yes.

Gyu-won came back from his family visit in late August.
He texted both of them from the train: back tomorrow. Let's meet this week.
They met on a Wednesday evening in the coffee shop near campus that had become their meeting place when the three of them needed neutral ground. Ha-eun arrived first, then Gyu-won, then Do-hyun, who was coming from the research office.
The three of them had not been in the same space since the end of semester dinner. Ha-eun looked at them and thought about the year they had spent investigating together, the specific form of collaboration between three people who had each brought a piece, and she thought: this is also a form of family. The word was probably too large but the feeling was related to what the word described.
Gyu-won ordered coffee. He said: "I found something at my family home."
They looked at him.
He reached into his bag and took out a photograph, printed on photo paper, the same format as the five photographs from the envelope. He set it on the table.
Ha-eun looked at it.
A photograph from inside the building, taken from a different angle than the others: a corridor, two figures, one of them clearly Seong-jin in profile, one of them turned away from the camera. But this was a different figure from the one in the fifth photograph, the one they had identified as Park Hyeon-gi. This figure was smaller, standing differently.
Do-hyun looked at the photograph.
Gyu-won said: "I found this separately from the envelope. In a box my father kept in the attic. I don't know if he meant to leave it there or if it was separate from the ones he put in the notebook."
Ha-eun looked at the figure turned away from the camera. The clothing, the height, the posture.
She looked at Do-hyun.
He was looking at the photograph.
Gyu-won said: "I think there was a third person in the building."
No one said anything for a moment.
Do-hyun picked up the photograph and looked at it carefully. He set it back down. He said: "The third person got the photographs to my father."
Gyu-won said: "Yes. That's what I think."
Ha-eun said: "Who was the third person."
No one answered. The photograph lay on the table between them and none of them knew the answer. They had the full picture, or they had thought they had, and now there was another figure in it, turned away from the camera, present in the building on the night of the fire and still unidentified.
Ha-eun thought: the picture is not as complete as we thought.
She thought: there is still a piece.
She thought: yes.
She looked at Do-hyun. He was looking at the photograph with the careful look. She thought about the summer of learning to be ordinary and the slightly off and the conversation about the easy version, and she thought: there is still something large to hold.
She thought: we are going to hold it together.
She thought: yes.
---
They looked at the photograph for a long time.
Gyu-won said: "I've been trying to identify the third person since I found this. I have a hypothesis but I'm not confident."
Ha-eun said: "Tell us."
He said: "The photograph was in my father's things. My father had it. The only way he would have had it is if someone gave it to him or if he took it himself. He didn't take it, because his camera is the one that took the other five photographs and the third figure in this one is not behind the lens."
Do-hyun said: "So someone gave it to him."
"Yes. After the fire, most likely. As additional documentation."
Ha-eun looked at the figure turned away from the camera. She thought about who else might have been in the building. She thought about the photograph from Seong-jin's envelope and the figure they had identified as Park Hyeon-gi, the senior officer who had signed the supplementary statement. She thought about the second figure in this new photograph, smaller, differently built.
She said: "Who else had a stake in documenting the violations."
Gyu-won looked at her.
She said: "Seong-jin was there to document. Park Hyeon-gi was there as a colleague, following Seong-jin's lead. Who else would have gone in with them."
Do-hyun said, slowly: "Someone who also knew the building was unsafe."
Gyu-won said: "Someone who also had evidence to gather, or a reason to witness."
Ha-eun thought about her father. She thought about a debt. She thought about: an advisory capacity at the amendment meeting.
She said: "We need to show this to someone who was there."
Gyu-won said: "Seong-jin."
Do-hyun was very quiet.
Ha-eun looked at him. She thought about asking him if he was okay and thought: not the right question. She said instead: "We don't have to do this tonight. Or this week."
He said: "No." He looked at the photograph. "But we need to do it."
She said: "Yes."
He said: "I'll call the clinic tomorrow."
Gyu-won nodded.
They sat for a while in the coffee shop with the photograph between them and the discovery settling, and Ha-eun thought about the year and about how it had felt finished and how it was apparently not quite finished, and she thought: of course there is still a piece. There is always still a piece until there isn't.
She thought: we are going to find it.
She thought: yes.
She thought about Do-hyun calling the clinic tomorrow. She thought about the texture of that decision: not asking her first, not consulting, just deciding, the way she had been learning to decide things without over-consulting, and the way this was its own form of the progress they had both been making.
She thought: he knows what he needs to do.
She thought: yes.
She thought: and so do I.
She thought about the question she was going to have to ask her father: was the third figure in the photograph him. She thought about how she was going to ask it: directly, without the managed version, the same night she knew.
She thought: I know.
She thought: yes.
She thought: same night.
She looked at Gyu-won. She said: "Thank you for bringing this."
He said: "It's what I'm here for."
She almost smiled. She thought: yes. And also more than that.
She thought: it is all more than that.
She thought about the three of them at this table and the year they had spent together and all the things they had each brought that the others could not have brought alone, and she thought: this too is a form of together.
She thought: yes.
They left the coffee shop and went their separate ways and Ha-eun walked home and thought about the photograph and her father and the third figure and the question she was going to ask and the answer she was going to receive, and she thought: the picture is not quite complete.
She thought: but we are close.
She thought: yes.
She went home and knocked on the wall.
Three knocks back.
She thought: we are close.
She thought: yes.
She thought: together.
She fell asleep.
You've reached the end of this chapter
August arrived with the specific quality of Seoul in late summer: humid and heavy, the city moving slightly slower than its usual pace, the heat from the concrete rising in the afternoons. Ha-eun had started her rotation at the teaching hospital in the Mapo district, which meant a forty-minute commute each way and a schedule that began earlier and ended later than the first-year pattern.
