The third interdisciplinary evaluation of the year brought Ha-eun and Na-ri together again in late September, the third time they had worked the same station since November of the year before. Ha-eun arrived knowing what to expect: Na-ri's competence, the specific rhythm of their coordination, the particular quality of a colleague she trusted to be accurate.
What she did not expect was the question.
The scenario was complex, high-volume, a multi-casualty simulation that required sustained judgment rather than speed. They worked through it well, better than the previous two evaluations, which was itself a measure of something: not just individual skill but the accumulation of having worked together. Ha-eun noticed this during the scenario with a small, separate part of her attention and filed it as information.
In the break Na-ri sat beside her.
She said: "Kang Do-hyun is doing well this year."
Ha-eun said: "Yes. Very."
Na-ri said: "I've been watching him in the joint sessions. He's different from the fall."
Ha-eun said: "Better, you mean."
Na-ri said: "Yes. More settled. More in himself." She paused. "It's interesting to watch someone find their shape."
Ha-eun thought about the lights-in-a-room feeling she had been examining all week. She said: "I know what you mean."
Na-ri looked at her. Not with the preamble-less directness of the November conversation, but with something slightly more careful. She said: "Can I ask you something."
Ha-eun said: "Yes."
Na-ri said: "What does he need that you can't give."
The question arrived with the specific quality of something that has been waiting to be said. Ha-eun felt it land and did not respond immediately.
Na-ri said: "I'm not asking to disturb anything. I'm asking because I've been watching both of you for a year and I think it's a question worth sitting with."
Ha-eun said: "I don't know the answer."
Na-ri looked at her. "I know," she said. "That's why I asked."
---
She thought about the question for the rest of the evaluation.
Not in the way of someone circling a wound, but in the way of someone examining a territory they had not mapped yet. She had spent a year examining what she needed, what the relationship needed, what he needed from her specifically. She had not asked the other question: what did he need from his life, from his becoming, from the specific direction he was moving in, that she was not part of and could not provide.
After the evaluation, when the groups were dispersing, she saw Do-hyun across the atrium. He was talking to two of his program colleagues, laughing at something one of them said, comfortable in the specific way of someone at home in his professional community. She watched him from across the room and thought: that is the person he is becoming. That ease in that context.
She thought: I am not part of that context.
She thought: that is not wrong. It is just true.
She thought: we are each building things the other is not part of.
She thought about Na-ri's question: what does he need that you can't give.
She thought: I don't know.
She thought: I have never thought to ask what he needs from the parts of his life that aren't us.
She thought: that might be the gap.
---
He came to find her when the groups were dispersing. He said: "How was the station."
She said: "Good. Better than last time."
He said: "Na-ri mentioned you've been getting sharper in the complex scenarios."
She said: "She told you that."
He said: "She tells me things occasionally. We talk about the program." He looked at her. "Is that okay."
She said: "Of course." And it was. They had people they talked to. They had never been each other's only source of input. But she thought about Na-ri's question and thought: she talked to him about my work. And I talked to her about his needs. And we are all looking at the picture from different angles.
She said, walking: "She asked me something today."
He looked at her.
She said: "She asked what you need that I can't give."
He was quiet for a moment. "What did you say."
She said: "I said I didn't know."
He said: "That's honest."
She said: "Yes. And it was the first time I realized I hadn't thought about it that way. I've thought a lot about what you need from me. Not about what you need that has nothing to do with me."
He considered this. He said: "Those are different categories."
She said: "Yes."
He was quiet for the rest of the walk. She let him be quiet. They came back to the building and stood at the entrance and she thought: I have asked him the question. I don't know what he is going to do with it.
She thought: that is okay.
She thought: I don't need to know tonight.
She said: "I'm going to make dinner. Come over if you want."
He said: "I'll be there in an hour."
She went up.
---
He came over an hour later, as he said, and they made dinner together in the easy synchronization that was the second year's particular quality, and while they ate she did not return to Na-ri's question directly, because she had learned that some things needed the space of a meal and ordinary conversation before they were ready to be returned to.
But toward the end of the meal, while she was making tea, he said: "I've been thinking about what Na-ri asked."
She set the cups on the table and sat down.
He said: "I think what I need that you can't give is the experience of not being understood." He looked at his hands. "You understand me very well. You have for a long time. And I don't always know what I am when I'm not being understood."
She held this.
She said: "You mean you've never had to figure out how to be known by someone who doesn't already know you."
He said: "Something like that."
She said: "Because I've always been on the other side of the wall."
He said: "Yes."
She thought about ten years of the wall and the knock system, ten years of someone who had always been adjacent, who had always had the context, who had always been in the position of receiving rather than receiving from scratch.
She said: "That's not something I can change."
He said: "No."
She said: "And it's not something that means we shouldn't be together."
He said: "I know. I'm not saying that." He looked at her. "I'm saying it's something I've been thinking about. The question of whether there are things about myself I can only find out in a context where I'm not already known."
She sat with this carefully.
She thought: this is a real thing.
She thought: not manufactured, not a test of the relationship. A genuine question about his becoming that he is finally saying out loud.
She said: "I think you should think about that."
He looked at her.
She said: "I'm not telling you what to do with it. I'm saying it sounds like something that matters to you and that you should take it seriously."
He said: "I am."
She said: "Good."
They drank the tea and talked about other things and she went home at ten and knocked on the wall and got three knocks back and lay down and thought about what he had said: the experience of not being understood, the things about yourself you can only find in a context where you're not already known.
She thought: I can't give him that.
She thought: that is just true.
She thought: I don't know what that means for us.
She thought: but it was right that he said it.
She thought: yes.
She thought: it was right that I heard it.
She thought: yes.
She fell asleep with the question open, which was the right way to have it: not closed into a conclusion, not avoided, just open, present, real.
She thought: we are inside something.
She thought: yes.
She thought: it is important to stay awake to it.
She thought: yes.
---
In the days after the conversation she found herself looking at the shape of what they were more carefully than she had been doing.
Not with anxiety, not with the sense that something was immediately wrong, but with the attention of someone who has been told to look at something they had been looking past. She was looking at: the contexts she was part of and the contexts she was not part of. The parts of his life she had access to and the parts she did not. Not as a measurement of intimacy but as a mapping of a person's full range.
She thought about the program colleagues she had seen him talking to in the atrium. She did not know those people. She knew their names and some context from things he had mentioned, but she did not know them in the way she knew Gyu-won or Na-ri. They were his colleagues in the specific, daily way that colleagues became part of the texture of your professional life without necessarily becoming part of your broader one.
She thought: he has a professional community that exists without me.
She thought: and so do I.
She thought: that is correct and healthy.
She thought: but.
She thought about the but.
The but was this: within the professional communities they each had, he was already in his. He already knew who he was there, what he contributed, how he was seen. She was still arriving at hers. She could see, in the rotation, the beginning of how she would be known eventually, but it was not yet formed. She was still in the phase of being a competent student who showed promise; he was already in the phase of being recognized as the specific thing he was.
She thought: the asymmetry is not in our relationship.
She thought: the asymmetry is in our respective professional arrivals.
She thought: and that asymmetry is affecting how I experience the relationship.
She thought: yes.
She took this to Min-chae on Saturday morning.
Min-chae listened and then said: "You're describing a classic second-year phenomenon. Someone you respect as a peer is further along professionally, and you're reading it through the lens of the relationship rather than through the lens of career timing."
Ha-eun said: "Is that what I'm doing."
Min-chae said: "Partly. But I don't think it's only that. I think the question Na-ri asked is also a real question, and it's worth keeping separate from the career asymmetry. They're both real and they're different."
Ha-eun said: "How do I keep them separate."
Min-chae said: "By asking yourself which one you're actually concerned about in any given moment. When you feel the lights-in-a-room thing, is it about career timing or is it about what he needs?"
Ha-eun thought. She said: "Both, but they're usually coming from different places."
Min-chae said: "Then track them separately."
She said: "Yes."
She spent the rest of Saturday making distinctions. She wrote two columns in the back of her clinical journal, one for the career asymmetry and one for the relationship question, and she sorted the things she had been feeling into the appropriate column. By the end of the afternoon, the career column was longer but less urgent. The relationship question column was shorter but required more sitting with.
She thought: the career thing will resolve with time.
She thought: the relationship question requires a different kind of time.
She thought: yes.
She went to Do-hyun's apartment that evening and brought dinner she had made, which she did occasionally when she had the energy to cook and he had been working all day, and they ate and she told him about the two columns and the sorting she had been doing.
He listened. He said: "You've been doing a lot of thinking this week."
She said: "Yes."
He said: "What did you find."
She said: "That the things I've been feeling are separate things and I've been conflating them. The career asymmetry and the question about what you need from your life that I can't give. Both real. Not the same thing."
He said: "Yes."
She said: "The career thing I'm not worried about. The other question I'm still sitting with."
He said: "So am I."
She looked at him. He looked at her.
She thought: we are both sitting with it.
She thought: that is the right place to be.
She said: "I don't think I want to rush to resolve it. I think it's something that needs time and honesty and to not be avoided."
He said: "Yes."
She said: "Agreed."
He said: "Agreed."
They ate the rest of dinner and talked about other things and she went home and knocked on the wall and got three knocks back and thought: we are inside something real.
She thought: we are looking at it together.
She thought: yes.
She thought: that is good.
She thought: that is the right way to be inside something.
She thought: yes.
She fell asleep.
---
She dreamed about the atrium.
In the dream she was watching Do-hyun across the space and he was talking to people she did not know and he was laughing and completely at ease, and she was watching from the edge of the space and she could not tell if the watching was love or longing or something in between. She woke up with the residue of the dream and lay in the morning dark thinking about it.
She thought: in the dream I was watching.
She thought: that is what I have been doing.
She thought: watching him from the edge of the context he is in.
She thought about what it meant to watch someone and what it meant to be with them. She had been learning, all year, to be with him rather than to watch him, to be in the room rather than to observe the room from the outside. She had gotten better at this. But the dream was telling her something: there were still contexts where she reverted to the watching position.
She thought: professional context is one of those.
She thought: when I don't have the vocabulary of what he's doing, I watch rather than participate.
She thought: this might be the thing to work on in the second year.
She got up and made coffee and looked at her clinical journal and the two columns she had written, and she added a note to the relationship column: the watching position. She wrote: I still move to observer when I'm in a context where I don't have language for what's happening. This means I need to get more language.
She thought about how to get more language.
She thought: I could ask him to teach me the vocabulary of what he's doing.
She thought: not to be part of it. Just to understand enough to be present rather than to watch.
She thought: that is what you do when someone you love does work you don't do.
She thought: yes.
She texted him: can you explain what you're doing this week. Not the whole project. Just enough that I can follow the shape of it.
He replied: yes. Come over tonight.
She went.
He explained the structural analysis framework and the specific building he was assessing and what made it interesting from a failure analysis perspective. He used language she did not know and stopped to explain the terms, and she asked questions that were genuinely curious rather than politely following along, and by the end of an hour she understood enough to ask a question he had not thought to ask himself.
He looked at her after the question.
She said: "Is that useful."
He said: "Yes." He said it simply, the way he said things that were straightforwardly true. "Outside perspective."
She thought: outside perspective.
She thought: that is what I can offer from the position I'm in.
She thought: not understanding from the inside. But having enough language to be present and enough distance to ask the question from outside.
She thought: that is its own value.
She thought: yes.
She thought: I don't have to be inside his professional world to be with him in it.
She thought: I just have to have enough to be genuinely present.
She thought: that is learnable.
She thought: yes.
She went home feeling better than she had felt at the beginning of the week, which was the week's gift: moving from a feeling she couldn't name into one she could act on. She had a thing to do now. Not solve the question of what he needed, not close the thing that Na-ri had opened, but build the vocabulary to be more present in the contexts where she had been watching.
She thought: this is the second year's work.
She thought: not the investigation. Not the pattern of transparency.
She thought: learning how to be present in the things that are genuinely different between us.
She thought: yes.
She knocked on the wall.
Three knocks back.
She thought: we are still figuring this out.
She thought: yes.
She thought: that is not a failure.
She thought: that is what together looks like when you are serious about it.
She thought: yes.
She fell asleep thinking about outside perspective and what it meant to offer something from a position of difference rather than sameness, and she thought: this is also a form of love. She thought about Na-ri and what Na-ri had asked and what the asking had given her, and she thought: that was also a form of presence. Na-ri had been paying attention. She had given Ha-eun the question she needed at the moment she needed it. That was what the people in your life could do when they were paying genuine attention: give you the thing you did not know you needed.
You've reached the end of this chapter
The third interdisciplinary evaluation of the year brought Ha-eun and Na-ri together again in late September, the third time they had worked the same station since November of the year before.
