Gyu-won asked her to coffee on a Thursday in mid-October with no particular agenda stated.
She had learned to arrive at their coffees without expectations, because Gyu-won was not a person who announced in advance what he was going to say and the best approach was to come open. She ordered her usual. He ordered his. They talked about the semester for the first twenty minutes: his research, her rotation, the way the second year compared to the first for each of them.
Then he said: "Can I tell you something I've been observing."
She said: "Yes."
He said: "When you need to think through something important, the first person you contact is usually not Do-hyun."
She looked at him.
He said: "I'm telling you this as information, not as a judgment. You should have it."
She looked at the table. She thought about the year.
She thought about the night of the Busan address: she had texted Gyu-won. She thought about the morning after the envelope: she had called Min-chae. She thought about the night of the slightly off realization: she had called Min-chae before she told Do-hyun. She thought about the Na-ri mirror question: she had gone to Min-chae to process it before she brought it to Do-hyun. She thought about the clinical-attention insight: she had told Gyu-won before she told Do-hyun.
She said: "You're right."
He said: "I know." He said it without emphasis, as fact. "I'm only raising it because I think you've done important work on the transparency of what you share and the timing of when you share it. But this particular pattern exists at a level below the work you've been doing."
She said: "What do you mean."
He said: "You've gotten very good at telling him things before you've fully processed them. Same night. That's real and significant." He looked at his coffee. "But the first step before telling him, the step of figuring out what you're actually thinking and feeling, that step goes through other people. It goes through me and Min-chae. He gets you when you've already started to understand. We get you when you're still in the middle of not knowing."
She sat with this for a long time.
She thought about what it meant to be a processing partner versus a sharing partner. She had categorized them as different functions and assigned them to different people without examining the assignment. She had told herself: different people have different strengths, you bring different things to different people, this is natural.
She said: "Is it bad."
He said: "I don't know. Is it."
She thought. She thought about what it would be like to bring the half-formed, confused, not-yet-understood version of herself to Do-hyun, and she tried to imagine what that would be like, and she found she didn't fully know. She had not tried. She had always arrived at him already knowing what she thought and feeling. She had given him the processed version.
She said: "I don't know if it's bad. But I hear what you're saying."
He said: "What I'm saying is that there are parts of yourself you access more naturally with certain people. And that may be telling you something about who those people are to you."
She said: "Or it may be telling me something about a habit I've built that doesn't reflect what those people are to me."
He said: "Yes. Both are possible."
She said: "How do I know which."
He said: "I don't know. That might be something to look at with Do-hyun."
She said: "You mean tell him."
He said: "I mean look at it together. See what happens when you bring him the version that doesn't know what it is yet. See if that's possible."
She thought about this.
She thought: I have been protecting him from the not-knowing version of myself. Not deliberately. But I have been arriving at him already assembled. Already coherent. Already with something to say.
She thought: that is its own form of management.
She thought: yes.
She said: "I've been curating what I bring to him."
Gyu-won said: "Yes."
She said: "Not consciously. But yes."
He said: "Yes."
She sat with the recognition. She thought about the year of transparency work and the same-night commitment and everything she had built, and she thought: there is still a layer. There is still something I'm managing in the way I show up to him, not managing information, but managing the version of myself I present. Presenting the coherent, processed, arrived-at version rather than the uncertain, mid-thought, still-becoming version.
She said: "I don't know if I know how to bring him the not-knowing version."
Gyu-won said: "What are you afraid would happen."
She thought. She thought about the specific fear, which she had not named before. She said: "I think I'm afraid that the not-knowing version of me is less easy to be with. That if I come to him already confused and in the middle of something, he'll have to manage me rather than being with me."
Gyu-won looked at her.
She said: "Which is the pattern. Isn't it. The being-needed version."
He said: "It might be."
She said: "I'm afraid that if I come to him not knowing, I'll become a person he needs to help rather than a person he gets to be with."
He said: "And you don't want to need him."
She said: "I don't want to be a burden."
Gyu-won said quietly: "There it is."
She looked at her coffee.
She thought: yes.
She thought: being needed is not the same as being loved. I have known this. I have been working on this. And here is the reverse side of it, still operating: I am afraid to need him. I am afraid to be the person who needs something rather than the person who has something to give.
She thought: I am afraid that needing makes me less lovable.
She thought: that is the wound underneath the wound.
She said: "I've been working on the being-needed side all year. Trying to understand that he loves me regardless of my usefulness. But I haven't been working on the needing side. The fear of being the one who needs."
Gyu-won said: "Yes. Those are the two faces of the same thing."
She sat with this for a moment.
She said: "I need to bring him the not-knowing version."
Gyu-won said: "Yes. I think you do."
She said: "Even when I don't know yet what I'm thinking or feeling."
He said: "Especially then."
She finished her coffee and they talked about other things for a while and she walked home slowly, through the October afternoon with the leaves fully turned and the air with the particular sharpness of the season.
She thought: I am afraid to need him.
She thought: that is the thing I have not looked at.
She thought: I am going to look at it.
She thought: yes.
She thought about what that would look like in practice: arriving at his door with something she hadn't sorted through yet, not a processed observation or a completed thought, just the raw beginning of something she didn't understand, and saying: I don't know what this is yet, but I wanted to bring it to you first.
She thought: that would be different.
She thought: it would also be frightening.
She thought: yes.
She knocked on the wall that evening and got three knocks back and did not go over and did not text. She just lay with the recognition and let it be what it was.
She thought: one thing at a time.
She thought: yes.
She thought: I know what the next thing is.
She thought: yes.
---
She told Min-chae about it on Saturday.
She called her and said: "I realized something yesterday and I need to say it out loud." Min-chae said yes. She said it: the fear of needing, the reverse face of the being-needed wound, the way she had been arriving at Do-hyun already assembled for a year and what that meant about which version of herself she had been protecting him from.
Min-chae was quiet for a moment after she finished.
She said: "How long have you known."
Min-chae said: "Since April."
She said: "Why didn't you say something."
Min-chae said: "Because you needed to arrive at it. If I had named it before you were in a place to see it, you would have acknowledged it and moved on without actually sitting in it." She paused. "You have to arrive at the things that are hardest on your own timetable."
Ha-eun thought about this and thought: yes. That is accurate. The things that mattered most this year, she had needed to arrive at through her own process. The being-needed wound, the observing versus accompanying, the different processing partners. All of them had needed to come from inside rather than being told.
She said: "So I've been curating myself for him."
Min-chae said: "Yes."
She said: "And you've been one of the people I bring the uncurated version to."
Min-chae said: "Yes."
She said: "Does that mean what I'm doing with him is not the real version of myself."
Min-chae said carefully: "No. I think it means the version you bring to him is a real version. It's just not the only version. And there are parts of yourself, the confused, mid-process, not-yet-understood parts, that you've been keeping from him because you're afraid of being a person who needs something."
She sat with this.
She thought: I have given him the processed version of everything. The arrived-at version. The confident version that knows what it thinks.
She thought: I have never given him the version that doesn't know.
She thought: and I call that being with him fully.
She thought: but it's not fully.
She said: "I've been giving him the second draft."
Min-chae said: "That's a good way to put it."
She said: "The edited version. The one that already knows what it wants to say."
Min-chae said: "Yes."
She said: "He's never seen the first draft."
Min-chae said: "Not in a year."
She thought about what the first draft looked like. She thought about sitting at her desk at night with thoughts that weren't yet formed, feelings that weren't yet named, the raw confused interior of becoming that she processed first with Min-chae or Gyu-won and then brought to him in the cleaned-up version.
She thought: he has been getting the version that already knows.
She thought: he deserves the version that doesn't.
She said: "I need to show him the first draft."
Min-chae said: "Yes."
She said: "I don't know how."
Min-chae said: "You start before you know what you're going to say. You knock on his door and say: I don't know what I'm thinking yet but I wanted to come to you before I figured it out."
Ha-eun looked at the ceiling.
She said: "That is very frightening."
Min-chae said: "I know."
She said: "What if he doesn't know how to be with that version."
Min-chae said: "Then you'll find out."
She said: "And if it's hard for him."
Min-chae said: "Then you'll work on it together. The way you work on everything."
She thought about this.
She thought: I have been protecting him from my uncertainty because I was afraid he wouldn't know how to be with it. But I have not let him try. I have decided for him that he would struggle with the first-draft version of me.
She thought: that is the pattern.
She thought: deciding for him.
She thought: again.
She thought: I keep arriving at the same thing from different directions.
She said: "The deciding-for-him thing is still operating."
Min-chae said: "Yes. But differently than before. Before it was about protecting him from information. Now it's about protecting him from you. From the version of you that doesn't know yet."
She said: "Both versions of the same wound."
Min-chae said: "Yes."
She sat with the recognition and felt, underneath it, something that was not quite despair but was adjacent to it, the specific feeling of seeing a pattern you thought you had addressed and finding a deeper version of the same pattern.
She said: "I thought I had done more of this work."
Min-chae said: "You have. Significantly. The work you've done this year is real. But there are layers, and you've been peeling them. You're at a deeper one now."
She thought: yes.
She thought: a deeper layer is progress.
She thought: yes.
She thought: it doesn't feel like progress. It feels like not being done.
She thought: but that is what deep layers feel like when you first see them.
She said: "Okay."
Min-chae said: "Okay."
She went home and sat at her desk and wrote in the clinical journal: first draft. She wrote: I have been giving him the second draft. The version that already knows. He deserves the first draft too.
She looked at this.
She thought: yes.
She knocked once on the wall.
One knock back.
She thought: he is there.
She thought: I am going to show him the first draft.
She thought: not tonight. Soon.
She thought: yes.
She fell asleep.
---
She tried it on Monday.
She came home from rotation tired and confused about a case she had handled, not medically, the clinical decisions had been sound, but something about the way the patient's family had responded had left her with a feeling she couldn't name. She stood in the hallway outside her apartment and thought: I have two choices. I can go inside and think about this until I understand what it is and then tell him later tonight when I have something coherent to say. Or I can knock on his door right now before I understand anything.
She knocked on his door.
He opened it. She came in. He said: "What happened."
She said: "Something at rotation. I don't know what I'm thinking about it yet. I just wanted to come here before I figured it out."
He looked at her for a moment.
Then he stepped back from the doorway in the way that meant: come in fully, not just into the entryway.
She came in.
She sat on the floor in the living area and he sat near the window and she said: "There was a family. The patient was stable. But the family was having a different experience of the situation than the medical team was, and the gap between those two experiences, I did something that I think was technically correct and emotionally off and I don't know yet how to name what was off about it."
He said: "Tell me the gap."
She described the gap. She described the family and the situation and what she had done and what she had sensed in the room afterward. She described it in the first-draft way: not with the clarity she usually brought to case analyses, but with the confusion and the not-knowing and the feeling of having gotten something wrong that she couldn't pinpoint.
He listened.
He asked two questions that helped her see the edges of what she was describing.
She kept talking, following the edges, and gradually the thing became visible: she had given the family the medically accurate version when what they needed in that moment was to feel that someone had registered what they were experiencing. She had given them information instead of acknowledgment.
She said: "I did to them what I used to do."
He said: "Yes."
She said: "Second draft. Already knowing. When they needed first draft."
He looked at her. He said: "You're getting very good at naming your own patterns."
She said: "I have excellent practice material."
He almost smiled.
She thought: this.
She thought: this is the first draft.
She thought: I brought the confused version to him and he helped me see what it was.
She thought: I have been afraid of this and it is good.
She thought: yes.
She went home late. Three knocks. Three back.
She thought: I did it.
She thought: yes.
She thought: I brought the first draft.
She thought: and it was good.
She thought: and I am going to keep doing it.
She thought: yes.
She fell asleep thinking about the patient's family and what she would do differently next time, which was already a different question than the one she had come in with, and she thought: this is what it looks like when the not-knowing gets the right kind of attention.
She thought: yes.
She thought: this is what he can do for me.
She thought: I have been keeping him from being able to do it.
She thought: I am going to stop doing that.
She thought: yes.
---
She called Min-chae the next morning to tell her.
She said: "I tried it last night."
Min-chae said: "And."
She said: "It was good. He helped me see something I couldn't see from inside it. The thing I had been keeping him from being able to do for me."
Min-chae was quiet for a moment. Then: "How did it feel. Bringing the not-knowing version."
She thought about it. She said: "Like opening a window I'd been keeping closed."
Min-chae said: "That's the right image."
She said: "I was afraid of what would come in."
Min-chae said: "I know. What came in."
She said: "Air."
Min-chae was quiet.
She said: "Just air."
She went to rotation with the specific feeling of having done something that was a little frightening and had turned out to be fine, the particular lightness of the fear-response not being warranted. She paid attention to her cases and she thought about the patient's family from Monday and she thought about the second draft versus the first draft and how both had applications and how the skill was knowing which context asked for which.
She thought: I have been developing the wrong tool in the personal context.
She thought: the right tool for the personal context is the first draft.
She thought: I am going to keep practicing.
She thought: yes.
You've reached the end of this chapter
Gyu-won asked her to coffee on a Thursday in mid-October with no particular agenda stated.
