He knocked on her door on a Sunday afternoon in the second week of recovery.
She was at her desk working on the rotation notes she had fallen behind on, and the knock had the quality of deliberate arrival rather than casual proximity. She opened the door.
He said: "Can I come in."
She said: "Yes."
He came in and sat at her kitchen table, not at the counter where he usually sat when he arrived with something in hand, but at the table, the placement that said: I am here to say something.
She sat across from him.
He said: "I want to tell you something before I go back to the ordinary. Before the recovery settles and things become what they were."
She said: "Yes."
He said: "I've been sitting in the hospital room and then in my apartment for the last ten days with nothing to do except be in the recovery. And I've been thinking."
She waited.
He said: "I've been thinking about December and what I said about not knowing if I was good for you. And about the building season and about the structure-less version of myself that I was afraid of." He looked at his hands. "And I've been thinking about what happened in the building."
She said: "What about it."
He said: "I was in a corridor and the section behind me failed. I didn't know it was going to fail. I had assessed the building and I had identified the risks and I had been wrong about the specific location of the failure. I had been thorough and I had been wrong."
She said: "Yes."
He said: "And I've been sitting with that. With the experience of having done good work and being wrong. Of having understood a building and it still failing." He looked at her. "And I've been thinking about how that is the thing I was afraid of with us."
She was very still.
He said: "I've been afraid that if I loved you and I was wrong about something, the love would fail the way a structure fails. That understanding was the thing holding it up, and without understanding it would come down."
She said: "Yes."
He said: "And I was in the building and the section failed and I was still there. I was still in the building. The failure happened and I was still standing in the corridor, injured but standing."
She said: "Yes."
He said: "And I've been thinking: that's what it is. The love doesn't fail when you're wrong about something. You get injured. But you're still standing."
She received this.
She thought: he is telling her what he has been working through.
She thought: he found his answer.
She thought: yes.
She said: "Yes."
He said: "I know that's a very literal-minded way to arrive at something."
She said: "No. It's an experiential way. Those are the best ways."
He said: "Yes."
She said: "How does it feel. Knowing it from the inside."
He said: "Different from knowing it from the outside." He looked at her. "I've known it was possible to love in the uncertainty for a long time. Intellectually. This is the first time I've felt it from inside an actual uncertainty."
She said: "The building."
He said: "Yes. And you. Two uncertainties that are not the same but that ran in parallel this month."
She said: "And you're still standing."
He said: "Yes."
She thought: yes.
She thought: he found it himself.
She thought: yes.
She thought: I did not give it to him. He found it.
She thought: yes.
She said: "I've been here."
He said: "I know."
She said: "I told you I wasn't going anywhere."
He said: "I know." He looked at her. "I believe you now."
She held this.
She thought: I believe you now.
She thought: yes.
She thought: he found the thing inside and now he can receive what was always true.
She thought: yes.
She said: "I'm glad."
He said: "So am I."
She said: "There's still the December question. What you are without structure."
He said: "Yes. I'm still finding that out."
She said: "That's okay."
He said: "Yes. I know now that it's okay." He looked at her. "The difference is that before, not knowing felt like evidence that I was wrong. Now it just feels like not knowing yet."
She said: "That's the right relationship with not knowing."
He said: "Yes."
She thought: yes.
She thought: he arrived at it.
She thought: yes.
---
She called Min-chae that evening.
She said: "He told me he believes me now. That I'm staying."
Min-chae said: "What changed."
She said: "The collapse. He was in an uncertain situation and the structure failed and he was still standing. He used that to understand what he's been afraid of."
Min-chae was quiet for a moment. Then: "That's a very him way to arrive at something."
She said: "Yes." She thought about it. "He needed the experience to believe it. Not the idea. The experience."
Min-chae said: "And you."
She said: "I've been here. That was my version of the same thing. Staying without knowing how things would go."
Min-chae said: "And you were right to stay."
She said: "Yes."
Min-chae said: "How do you feel."
She thought. She said: "Like something has been resolved. Not everything. But something real and central."
Min-chae said: "The thing he was working through."
She said: "Yes. And something I've been working on too. Staying without knowing. Being here without monitoring the outcome."
Min-chae said: "Both of you arrived at the same place."
She said: "From different directions."
Min-chae said: "Yes."
She said: "That's us."
Min-chae said: "Yes. That's you."
She hung up and sat at her desk and thought about the different directions and the same place and all the parallel work of the year, and she thought: yes.
She thought: we are at the same place.
She thought: from different starting points.
She thought: yes.
She knocked on the wall.
Three knocks back.
She thought: still here.
She thought: yes.
She thought: both of us.
She thought: yes.
She thought: at the same place.
She thought: yes.
She fell asleep thinking about the parallel work and what it had taken and where it had arrived, and she thought: December is not the easy version.
She thought: December is the honest version.
She thought: yes.
She thought: that is better.
She thought: yes.
---
On Monday she went back to the ordinary.
Rotation, notes, the specific work of the second year continuing into its December phase. He rested. He read. He did the exercises. They had dinner three times that week and talked about the recovery and about other things and about what January would look like when they were both back in their respective working rhythms.
On Thursday she came over with food and they ate and afterward they sat on the couch, which they did occasionally but not always, and she was beside him and he was beside her, which was also a form of being here, the simplest form.
He said: "I've been thinking about what comes after the recovery."
She said: "What does."
He said: "The same work as before. Buildings and assessments and the specific work of making sure the structure does what it's supposed to do." He paused. "And this."
She said: "Yes."
He said: "And figuring out December."
She said: "We can do that together."
He said: "Yes."
She thought: yes.
She thought: together.
She thought: yes.
She thought about all the togethers of the year: the investigation together, the easy-version learning together, the crack and the repair together, the hospital and the recovery together. She thought about the together as something that had been built not by a single decision but by a thousand small ones, each one the decision to be here rather than elsewhere.
She thought: we are here.
She thought: both of us.
She thought: yes.
She went home at ten and stood at her window and looked at the December city and thought: the year is ending.
She thought: yes.
She thought: and we are here.
She thought: yes.
She thought: that is what the year built.
She thought: yes.
Three knocks.
Three back.
She went to bed.
She thought: yes.
She thought: still here.
She thought: yes.
She thought: this is the thing.
She thought: yes.
She thought: this is it.
---
She thought about what he had said for the rest of the day.
Not obsessively, not the way she had thought about things earlier in the year when she was still in the monitoring pattern. More the way she held things that mattered: present in a peripheral way, available for reflection when she had the attention for it.
He had said: the love doesn't fail when you're wrong about something. You get injured but you're still standing.
She thought about this sentence and what it had cost him to arrive at it, the ten days of recovery and the particular forced stillness of convalescence that had given him nowhere to go except inside the things he had been carrying.
She thought: forced stillness gave him what voluntary stillness couldn't.
She thought: yes.
She thought about all the times she had tried to give him the answer from outside: the reassurance, the evidence, the list of reasons why he was good for her and why she was staying. All of those had been right and none of them had been able to land, because the part of him that needed the answer was not in a place to receive it from outside.
She thought: he had to find it in his own experience.
She thought: yes.
She thought: that is how the deepest knowing works.
She thought: yes.
She went to rotation on Tuesday and was present in the work and thought about the case in front of her rather than about him, and on the way home she thought about the monitoring question. She noticed: she had not been monitoring today. Not his recovery, not whether the conversation of Sunday had changed things enough, not whether what he had said was complete or whether there was more coming.
She thought: I stopped monitoring.
She thought: for real this time.
She thought: yes.
She had stopped monitoring earlier, in November, when things were good, which had been easier. She had then started monitoring again, in December, when things were uncertain. And now, on the other side of the conversation and the thing he had found in the building's collapse, she had stopped again.
She thought: the difference is that this time I stopped because I trust the foundation rather than because the surface is smooth.
She thought: yes.
She thought: that is the deeper version of not monitoring.
She thought: yes.
She thought: trust rather than ease.
She thought: yes.
---
She and Gyu-won had the last coffee of the year on the third week of December.
She told him about the Sunday conversation and what Do-hyun had said and the way he had arrived at it through the building's failure.
Gyu-won listened. When she finished, he was quiet for a moment. He said: "That's very him."
She said: "Yes."
He said: "He needed a structural metaphor."
She said: "Yes."
He said: "And now."
She said: "Now he knows from the inside."
Gyu-won said: "How are you."
She said: "Good. Different from before."
He said: "Different how."
She thought. She said: "I think I've been arriving somewhere this year and this is the arrived version. Not the finished version. But the arrived-so-far version."
He said: "What does it feel like."
She said: "Settled. Like the second year but deeper." She looked at her coffee. "I know what I'm doing. I know who I am with. I know what we're building toward together." She paused. "Not every specific. But the general shape."
Gyu-won said: "That's significant."
She said: "Yes."
He said: "You should feel what you feel about that."
She said: "I do." She looked at him. "I feel good."
He said: "Yes. I can tell."
She thought: yes.
She thought: I feel good.
She thought: yes.
She went home from the coffee and stopped at the market and bought things for dinner, a dinner she was going to make for both of them, and she texted Do-hyun: dinner tonight, I'm cooking, come over.
He replied: yes.
She made dinner. He came over. They ate.
At some point during the dinner she thought: this is the easy version.
She thought: yes.
She thought: this is what we were working toward.
She thought: yes.
She thought: it is not perfectly easy. Nothing is.
She thought: but it is good.
She thought: yes.
She thought: it is good in the real way.
She thought: yes.
He helped wash the dishes afterward, which he did more consistently now than he had done in the early months, a small change that was also a large one, the accumulation of someone becoming more at home in someone else's space.
She thought: yes.
She thought: he is at home here.
She thought: yes.
She thought: I am at home where he is.
She thought: yes.
They sat after and talked about January and what it would contain: his return to placement, her continuation into the second semester of the second year, the specific shape of the life they had built. They talked about Gyu-won's research and what the spring looked like for him and about the cherry blossom road in its winter state and what it would look like in April.
She thought: April.
She thought: we will be here in April.
She thought: yes.
She thought: we will see the blossoms.
She thought: yes.
He went home at ten. She stood at her window and looked at the city.
She thought: this is December.
She thought: yes.
She thought: this is what December contains.
She thought: yes.
Three knocks.
Three back.
She thought: still here.
She thought: yes.
She thought: always still here.
She thought: yes.
She went to bed.
She thought: tomorrow.
She thought: and tomorrow.
She thought: yes.
---
She dreamed about the wall.
In the dream she was standing on her side of the wall and she could hear the knocks, not just three but a whole language of them, all the variations they had developed over the year and a half: the three for presence and connection, the one for acknowledgment, the different rhythm for urgency, the long pause that meant I'm here but working, the quick double that meant I thought of something and wanted you to know.
She stood in the dream and listened to all the versions of the knocks and she thought: this is a language.
She thought: we made this.
She thought: yes.
She woke from the dream in the December dark and lay still and thought about the wall and all the things it had contained. She thought about the first time she had knocked, the autumn of the first year, when the wall had still been a wall between two people who mostly did not interact. She thought about the first time he had knocked back, which was also the first time she had understood that the wall was not only a barrier but a medium, something you could communicate through if you knew the right frequencies.
She thought: we found the frequencies.
She thought: yes.
She thought: over a year and a half we found the frequencies.
She thought: yes.
She thought about the language they had built and all the other things they had built: the pattern of transparency, the same-night telling, the first-draft version of herself she had been learning to bring, the stopped monitoring, the trust rather than ease, the parallel work of the year arriving at the same place from different directions.
She thought: we built a great deal.
She thought: yes.
She thought: from two adjacent apartments and a wall between them.
She thought: yes.
She thought: and it is still building.
She thought: yes.
She thought: the building is not finished.
She thought: no.
She thought: it is in good shape.
She thought: yes.
She fell back into sleep and dreamed about other things, ordinary things, the rotation and the cherry blossom road and a dinner she had not eaten yet, and she thought in the dream: yes.
She thought: yes.
She woke in the morning with the specific feeling of having slept well and having arrived at something, not a conclusion but a resting place, the particular quality of a stage that has been fully inhabited and is ready for the next stage to begin.
She made coffee.
She stood at the window.
The December city was doing its ordinary morning thing, cold and purposeful and full of people going about the specific work of their lives, and she thought: I am one of those people.
She thought: yes.
She thought: and I am in my life.
She thought: yes.
She thought: really in it.
She thought: yes.
She knocked on the wall.
Three knocks back.
She thought: yes.
She thought: still here.
She thought: yes.
She thought: both of us.
She thought: still.
She thought: yes.
She drank her coffee.
She went to work.
She thought: yes.
She came home that evening to find a folded piece of paper on the floor inside her door, slipped under it in the old way, the paper-note way from the early months.
She picked it up.
It said, in his handwriting: I found the answer. I thought you should know.
She stood in the doorway and read it twice. Then she set it on her desk, carefully, the way she set things she was going to keep.
She thought: yes.
She thought: he found it.
She thought: and he told me.
She thought: yes.
She thought: we are still doing this.
She thought: the paper notes and the wall knocks and the first-draft versions and the building-together.
She thought: yes.
She thought: it is still building.
She thought: yes.
She sat at her desk and looked at the note and thought about all the notes and the knocks and the year and the half-year and the becoming and the arriving and the still-here, and she thought: yes.
She thought: this is the thing.
She thought: yes.
She thought: this is it.
She thought: yes.
You've reached the end of this chapter

She and Gyu-won had the last coffee of the year on the third week of December.
She told him about the Sunday conversation and what Do-hyun had said and the way he had arrived at it through the building's failure.
Gyu-won listened. When she finished, he was quiet for a moment. He said: "That's very him."
