Mira had been awake since five.
Elara knew this because Mira sent her first message at 5:04 — not a call, which would have implied urgency, but a message, which implied the particular kind of bad news that needed to be received while sitting down. *Three more outlets. Different angles, same source material. Someone is running a coordinated push.*
Elara read it in bed, then got up and made coffee and read the articles.
They were professionally done. She could see the architecture of them — the same narrative, the same selection of facts, the same framing of Aster Hall as a pattern rather than an incident, distributed across three publications with different audiences but the same underlying picture of who Elara Voss was and what she was likely to do in a high-profile project. The kind of coverage that didn't require anyone to say anything false. That was the elegant part. Everything in the articles was technically accurate. The effect of it was not.
She finished her coffee and went to work.
At nine forty she was in the atrium lobby, calibrating a new array position, when the main entrance doors opened and Celia Rook came in.
Celia moved through spaces the way certain people do — with the implicit assumption of welcome, the practiced ease of someone who had spent decades in rooms that were always happy to receive her. She was wearing a pale grey coat and carrying a bag that cost more than a month of Elara's studio rent, and her hair was in the precise arrangement that Elara had always privately thought of as a performance of effortlessness — the kind of thing that required significant effort to look like it required none.
She saw Elara and her expression arranged itself into warmth.
"Elara," she said. The warmth was real, which was the complicated part about Celia — she genuinely liked people, she genuinely had good taste, she was genuinely formidable, and none of these things prevented her from doing what she was here to do.
"Celia." Elara set down her calibration tool and crossed the atrium. "I didn't know you were in Valmere."
"I've been here a few days. I heard about the project — I should have reached out sooner, but you know how it is." Celia looked around the atrium with the appraising eye of someone who had assessed thousands of exhibition spaces. "The bones of this building are extraordinary. I'd forgotten."
"You've been here before."
"Years ago. Before it closed." Her tone was smooth, untroubled — either she had no specific memory of the last event or she had decided, efficiently, not to have one. "I was hoping to see what you're building. And to speak with the owner, if he's available."
Adrien was available. He had come into the atrium from the service corridor at some point in the past few minutes — she had not heard him, she rarely did — and was standing at the far end, watching. She did not know how long he had been there.
He crossed the atrium with the unhurried quality that was his default register, and Celia turned and extended her hand and he took it and they were two people in a lobby exchanging professional courtesies, and Elara stood to the side and watched the very specific negotiation of subtext that occurred when two people who know something about each other meet in a context that does not acknowledge that knowledge.
Celia was charming. She was very good at this — the pivot from arrival to engagement, the deployment of genuine interest in the project as a social solvent, the way she asked questions that sounded like curiosity and functioned as positioning. Adrien answered her questions with the economy he brought to everything, giving her the information she asked for and not the information she was actually seeking.
Then Celia turned to Elara.
"It's wonderful that you're back at this scale," she said. The warmth was still there, the sincerity still functioning. "After everything — Aster Hall was difficult for everyone involved, and I think the field has been the poorer for your absence." A pause, timed with precision. "I do hope the technical oversight on this project is comprehensive. I understand the systems in older buildings can be unpredictable."
Elara heard every word of this. She heard the word *hope* doing the work of *doubt.* She heard *technical oversight* functioning as a reference to her alleged failure. She heard the smile in Celia's voice, which was the most sophisticated part — the smile that made the sentence sound like support rather than what it was.
She opened her mouth.
Adrien spoke first.
"The technical parameters of this installation are my responsibility," he said. His voice was level — entirely, completely level, the specific flatness of someone who has decided to be very precise. "The creative design is Elara's. Those two things have distinct accountability structures and I'd recommend keeping them distinct in any assessment of the project's risk profile." He looked at Celia with the expression that was not unfriendly but was also not warm. "If you have concerns about the technical infrastructure, I'm happy to schedule a meeting with our engineering team."
Celia received this gracefully, which was the only thing to do with it. She smiled. She expressed her enthusiasm for the opening. She made the right sounds about looking forward to seeing the finished installation. She left approximately twenty-five minutes after she arrived, having received, as far as Elara could determine, none of the things she had come for.
The entrance doors closed.
Elara looked at Adrien.
"You didn't have to do that," she said.
"I know," he said.
Mira emerged from the corridor behind them — she had been in the archive room, had heard the visit from the intercom feed. She looked between them with the expression of someone observing a development she had been expecting and does not find surprising. "Lucien sent her," she said. "Theo confirmed — Celia and Valez have lunch together every time she's in Valmere. She arrived in the city three days ago."
Elara filed this. Three days ago was the day the first article went out.
"He's testing," Adrien said. "Celia was an assessment. He wanted to know if you were shaken."
"And?"
"You weren't," he said simply.
They spent the afternoon in the archive room, working through the logistics of accessing the basement control system — Theo had identified the likely source of the current frequency as a secondary output from that room, which meant whoever was generating it had access to the building's infrastructure. After five, Mira went to her hotel to sleep. Theo went to the harbor for food. Adrien had a call.
Elara went to the roof.
She did not go there specifically because it was where Selene had sat. She went there because she needed air and height and the particular perspective of being above the problem rather than inside it, and because it was the place in the building where she felt most able to think without The Moonwell thinking with her.
The evening was cool. The bay was going from silver to dark, the city lights coming on in sequence across the harbor front, the water catching them one by one and holding them without fuss. She sat on the stone ledge at the roof's edge — not the edge itself, she was not someone who needed symbolic proximity to heights to feel the weight of things — and looked at Valmere.
She had been defined by Aster Hall for three years. Not just in the press — in herself, in the interior architecture of how she understood her own work and her own judgment. The question she had never been able to answer — *did I make a mistake?* — had become a kind of permanent background radiation, low-level and constant, shaping the way she approached every decision. She had made herself small to avoid the question. Had taken small projects, made careful choices, stayed inside the perimeter where the question couldn't reach.
And now Celia Rook had walked into The Moonwell and done the thing people had been doing for three years — had used Aster Hall as a tool, a lever, a means of making her smaller — and what Elara had felt, for the first time, was not the familiar weight of it. What she had felt was something closer to clarity.
She heard footsteps. She did not turn.
Adrien sat down beside her on the stone ledge. Not close — a distance that was respectful of her space and also present in hers, the specific calibration she had come to recognize as his way of being in proximity to someone without crowding them.
They were quiet together, looking at the city. The lights accumulated on the water.
"She does this to everyone eventually," he said. Not about Celia — she understood. About what Celia represented. About the thing that made someone deploy another person's failure as a social instrument.
"I know," Elara said. "I've known her for six years."
"Did she support your work before Aster Hall?"
"Yes. Enthusiastically." She paused. "She dropped me within a week of the incident. Before the investigation had even concluded."
He said nothing, but she felt the quality of his listening — the attentiveness she had come to understand as how he showed he was present.
"I was angry for a long time," she said. "Then I wasn't anymore. Now I mostly feel—" She considered. "Tired of the story. Ready for a different one."
The moon was coming up over the cliff behind them, its reflection beginning to form on the water of the bay. She watched it find its angle and settle.
"Lucien Valez," she said. "Tell me what you know about him."
Adrien was quiet for a moment, the quiet of someone organizing what they know into what can be said. "He was the largest private backer of The Moonwell's event programming at the time of Selene's disappearance. He had a relationship with her — not romantic," he said, and she heard the care in the precision. "Professional. He had been, he said, mentoring her. Providing access to his gallery network for her work."
"And you didn't trust him."
"I was nineteen and I didn't have a reason that wasn't intuition." A pause. "He handled the aftermath very efficiently. The statements to the press. The narrative about Selene's instability, her desire to leave. He was very helpful to my family in a period when my family was not able to think clearly, and the help shaped the story in a direction that served him."
Elara looked at the moon on the water.
"He's going to come here," she said.
"He already has a meeting request in to my office. He wants to discuss a co-sponsorship arrangement for the opening night."
"What are you going to do?"
A pause. "Take the meeting," he said. "Keep him close enough to watch. And make sure that whatever Selene built into this building gets shown on opening night before he can do anything about it."
Elara nodded slowly. The moon was fully up now, its reflection on the bay wide and still.
"Then we need to find the seven minutes before he gets into this building," she said.
"Yes," he said.
They sat on the roof until the bay was entirely dark, and the city floated on its own reflection below them, and neither of them said anything more, and the silence was the kind that does not need to be filled.
