The eighth floor had the best mirror configuration in the building.
This was not a subjective assessment — she had the data to support it: the eighth floor's east-west corridor had been fitted, at some point in the building's operational history, with a series of angled mirror panels that had been installed not for decorative purposes but to extend the apparent length of the corridor and, incidentally, to create a complex reflective environment that no other floor in the building replicated. The panels were not large — perhaps a meter by a half meter each, mounted at eight-degree intervals from vertical — and the effect they produced was subtle enough that a guest moving through the corridor would register a sense of spaciousness without being able to identify its source.
For Elara's purposes, they were invaluable and required extensive documentation.
She had been working alone on eight since midmorning. Adrien and Theo were in the basement control room — they had gone down at nine, found the room in the state she had seen it from the doorway, and begun the careful work of cataloguing what was there before touching anything. Mira was on her laptop in the archive room, running a search through the Solace Holdings financial records that she had, through means Elara had decided not to ask about in detail, obtained from a former board member who was apparently willing to be indiscreet about Lucien Valez's involvement in the original event.
The corridor was quiet except for the sound of Elara's work and the building's ambient low frequency — still present, Theo confirmed that morning, still running at a level he had not yet been able to fully localize.
She was adjusting the largest mirror panel — it was not fixed, could be rotated on its mounting by small degrees to change the corridor's reflective geometry — when the bracket slipped.
Not catastrophically. The panel tilted rather than fell, rotating on its lower mounting point while the upper bracket disengaged, and she caught it with both hands before it could go further. The glass held. The frame held. She held the panel at its new angle for a moment, breathing, making a rapid assessment of the situation: bracket disengaged but not broken, panel secure in her grip, no structural damage.
Then she became aware of the pain.
She looked down.
The mirror's frame had a sharp upper edge at one corner — a small imperfection in the metalwork, the kind of thing that mattered enormously in certain circumstances and not at all in others. In the process of catching the tilting panel, her right hand had found this edge. A clean cut, diagonal across the index finger, already bleeding with the focused efficiency of cuts in that location.
She stood holding the panel and looked at her hand for a moment.
The specific quality of the response she had was familiar in the same way that a scar is familiar — not as pain, exactly, but as recognition. Aster Hall. The sound of glass. The sensory memory that lived below the level of the gap in her recollection, the memory of aftermath rather than event: glass on the stage floor, the specific smell of the Aster Hall rigging system, a sound she could not now reproduce accurately. She stood in the eighth-floor corridor of The Moonwell and breathed very deliberately and let the recognition pass through her the way she had learned to let it pass.
Then she leaned the mirror panel carefully against the wall, with the broken bracket secured against the frame, and looked at her hand again with professional detachment.
Not deep. Clean line. Required attention but not urgent. She needed a first aid kit.
She was reaching for her phone to check the floor plan for the nearest service station when she heard footsteps from the stairwell door at the corridor's end — not the careful even footsteps she recognized, but the faster quality of someone who had heard something and was moving toward it.
Adrien came through the stairwell door.
He looked at her, and then at her hand, and his expression did what she had come to recognize as its emergency sequence: a brief full-attention assessment, the conclusions drawn, the response selected. He did not ask if she was fine — she noticed this, filed it under the category of things he did that were actually kind, disguised as efficiency.
He went directly to the service station alcove three meters down the corridor — she had not known it was there — and came back with a white first aid box. He set it on the windowsill at the corridor's end, the nearest flat surface, and opened it.
"Sit," he said.
She sat on the windowsill. The window was north-facing, the sea visible in the middle distance, the light grey and clean and without particular drama.
He crouched in front of her — bringing himself to her level without making a production of it — and examined the cut with the same focused attention he brought to all assessments. His hands were steady. She watched them: the specific way he held her hand to look at the cut, two fingers at her wrist and his thumb across the back of her hand, not gripping but secure, the hold of someone who had done this before or who had the kind of natural competence with their hands that made most things look practiced.
"It's not deep," she said.
"I can see that."
He cleaned the cut with the efficiency of someone who was not squeamish and not particularly invested in the cleaning being comfortable, which it wasn't, but the discomfort was clean and clear and she preferred it to fuss. He took the small bandage from the kit and cut it to size — cut it, because the standard sizes were wrong for this particular cut's geometry, and he had looked at the cut and understood this before reaching for the scissors — and applied it with a precision that spoke of someone who had thought about the mechanical requirements of what he was doing.
All of this took perhaps two minutes.
And then it was done, and her hand was bandaged, and he did not release it.
He was not holding it actively — his hands had simply not moved, the hold that had been functional remaining present after the function had been completed. She felt the weight of his grip, his thumb across the back of her hand, his fingers at her wrist. She was aware of her own pulse, which was not behaving with the reliability she would have preferred.
She looked at her hand in his hands.
She looked at the bandage — neat, well-applied, the exact right length — and at the way the morning light from the north window fell across both their hands, her paler skin and his slightly darker, the bandage white between them.
She looked up.
He was looking at her. Not at the bandage, not at her hand, not at the work he had done. At her. She met his gaze without the management she usually applied to the direct look — she was too aware of her own pulse to manage much else, and the awareness itself was data, and she had always preferred to look at data directly.
The corridor was very quiet. The building hummed its low frequency around them, the ambient sound she had stopped noticing weeks ago and had started noticing again in the past minute, perhaps because she was attending to very small things right now and the frequency was a very small thing that was always present.
Neither of them moved.
Then he released her hand. The release was deliberate — not a recoil, not an embarrassed withdrawal, a decision. He stood from his crouch and picked up the first aid box and closed it and set it back in the alcove.
"I'll have someone look at the bracket," he said. His voice was its usual register, even and direct, and the only thing that was not its usual register was the quality of the pause before it.
"Thank you," she said.
He picked up the pieces of packaging from the bandage — the wrapper, the cut-off portion of the bandage tape — and disposed of them in the service station's waste bin with the specific tidiness that was characteristic of him, the particular quality of someone who returns spaces to order not as a performance but as a default.
He left the corridor without looking back.
She sat on the windowsill and looked at her bandaged hand.
The cut throbbed mildly. The bandage was exactly right — she had noted this while he was applying it, with the part of her brain that continued to function analytically in all circumstances — the tension correct, the coverage appropriate, the specific location of the cut accounted for.
She sat there for a while longer than was strictly necessary for the purposes of composure.
That evening Mira knocked on the suite door, let herself in with the key Elara had given her, and found Elara sitting cross-legged on the studio couch with her laptop open and her notes spread around her in the pattern that indicated active processing rather than passive research.
Mira looked at Elara's hand. Then at Elara's face.
"Chuyện gì xảy ra?" she said.
"Mirror bracket. Not serious."
"And the bandage?"
Elara looked at her hand. "Adrien."
Mira was quiet for a moment, the specific quiet that preceded a conclusion being stated. "Anh ấy băng cho cô," she said.
"Vâng."
Another pause. Mira sat down at the worktable, folded her arms, and looked at Elara with the expression she used when she had decided to say something directly and was deciding on the exact formulation. "Elara. Cô đang rơi vào rồi đó."
Elara looked at the bandage. She thought about the weight of his hand. She thought about the north window light and the grey sea and the two minutes in which nothing had been said and nothing had needed to be.
"Tôi biết," she said.
Mira nodded once — not with satisfaction, not with alarm. With the gravity of someone who has said the necessary thing and found it received. "Okay," she said. "Thì cứ biết đó."
And she opened her laptop and went back to the financial records, because there was still a generator running in the walls and a man who wanted to control this building's opening night, and knowing something did not mean the work stopped.
