The email arrived at seven forty-one in the morning, forwarded by Mira with a single line appended in her own voice: *Dress for battle or dress for observation — pick one.*
Elara read it twice, sitting at the worktable in suite 1701 with her first coffee going cold beside her. The email was from Adrien's office — formal, brief, the language of scheduling rather than invitation. Lucien Valez had confirmed his meeting at The Moonwell for two o'clock that afternoon. He looked forward to discussing the project's potential.
She put the phone down and looked at the bay.
She had been preparing for this, in the way she prepared for anything she could not fully control: by knowing as much as possible about what she was walking into. She had read everything Mira had found about Lucien Valez, which was considerable and consistent. Forty-eight years old. Gallery founder and director, Valmere and Paris, with satellite presences in three other cities. A significant private collection, the kind assembled over decades with both taste and calculation. A reputation in the arts community that was universally praised in public and almost universally qualified in private — the qualification always arriving in the same register, a slight hesitation before the praise that told you someone was editing themselves.
She had seen two photographs of him. In both he was impeccably presented, the kind of presentation that looked effortless because the effort was so thoroughly embedded in the result that it was no longer visible. In both he was smiling — the same smile, she thought, looking between the images. Not the same smile as in different contexts. The same smile, deployed identically, as though it had been optimized and was no longer being modified.
She thought: *I have been in rooms with people like this before.*
She thought: *I did not know, those times, what I was in a room with.*
She dressed carefully — not for battle, not entirely for observation. For competence. The white blazer, because it was the thing she had worn when she walked into The Moonwell the first time and it had served her correctly then. Her silver earrings. Her hair down, because up was a defensive choice and she was not going to be defensive today. She checked herself in the mirror with professional detachment and decided she looked like someone who was exactly where she meant to be.
She went downstairs at one fifty-five.
Lucien Valez was already in the lobby.
Not waiting — that was the first thing she noticed. He was not standing at the entrance or near the reflecting pool in the posture of someone who had arrived and was now doing the social work of a visitor. He was standing near the east wall, looking at the tonal variations in the glass at a specific angle, with the posture of someone who had found something interesting and was examining it. Either he had arrived very early and had spent the intervening time making himself at home, or he had choreographed this — had timed his arrival to produce exactly this impression of ease.
Elara had taken three steps into the lobby before he turned.
He was taller than the photographs had suggested. Not dramatically so — perhaps five centimeters more than she had calibrated for, enough to require a slight upward adjustment of her sight line. He was well-made, in the specific way of someone who had always understood their appearance as a professional instrument and had maintained it accordingly. His hair was dark brown, perfectly placed. His suit was the color of old cream, and it fit with the precision that came from being made for the specific body wearing it. His eyes, when they found hers, were amber — warm in color and not in quality.
He smiled.
It arrived on his face at exactly the right moment, with exactly the right dimensions. Teeth in the correct proportion. Warmth in the correct amount. It was, she thought, technically perfect — the smile of someone who had understood that a smile was a tool and had refined the tool to its optimal form. It was indistinguishable from genuine unless you were looking for the thing that made it not genuine, which was the absence of any process behind it, the fact that it had simply appeared, fully formed, without the micro-adjustments of actual feeling.
*"Miss Voss,"* he said. His voice was measured, pleasant, the voice of someone who had also understood that voice was a tool. *"Your reputation precedes you. Both of them."
Two reputations. She heard it — the word *both,* the plural, the deliberate construction of a sentence that acknowledged her past without appearing to weaponize it, which was itself the weaponization. She stood in it for a moment and let herself hear it clearly so she would not be pulled off-balance by it later.
*"Mr. Valez,"* she said. *"I've heard a great deal about your work with emerging artists."
His smile did not change. He received this — the not-quite-compliment, the acknowledgment of what she had said rather than what he had wanted to hear — without any visible response. He was good. She noted it the way she noted technical specifications: precisely, without judgment.
*"This building,"* he said, turning back to the glass wall he had been examining. *"I had forgotten what it does to light. It's extraordinary."
She looked at the glass with him. The afternoon light was doing what it always did — the building's particular vocabulary, the impossible angles, the reflection vectors that bent by three degrees from the expected. She had spent three weeks learning this language. He had spent thirty seconds with it, and she watched him look at it and understood that he was not seeing what she saw. He was seeing what he could use.
Adrien came in from the corridor.
The dynamic shifted immediately — not dramatically, not in any way that an observer without context would have identified as significant. But she was standing in the room where it happened, and she felt the specific quality of two people who have a long history and no neutral position in it encountering each other in a space that belongs to one of them.
Adrien crossed to them. His expression was the managed version, but she had learned the managed version well enough to read underneath it, and what she read was not wariness or anger — something colder and more specific, the expression of someone who had been waiting for a very long time for a particular confrontation and had spent that time preparing.
Lucien's smile warmed by approximately three degrees when Adrien arrived. He pivoted smoothly from charm calibrated for Elara to charm calibrated for someone who could not be charmed in the same way — the language shifted, became more horizontal, the language of peers rather than patron and artist. *We are the same kind of person,* the shift said. *We understand each other.*
Elara stood slightly to the side and watched them and thought: this is the most dangerous version of him. Not the social aggression he had directed at her, which was visible and therefore manageable. This — the implied equality, the recognition, the suggestion that whatever existed between Adrien and Lucien was between men who understood each other's world — this was the version designed to make Adrien feel seen rather than threatened.
She had watched Adrien handle many things. She watched him handle this.
He listened. He asked precise questions. He gave Lucien the minimum information required to keep the conversation moving, and he gave none of the information that mattered. She could see the structure of it — the way he was managing the exchange without appearing to manage it, controlling the room the way she controlled a light sequence, giving the impression of flow while determining every element of it.
Lucien made his offer in the fourth minute of the conversation: the figure, the terms, the *consultant review* clause framed as industry standard practice for major arts sponsorships. She heard it for what it was. Access. He was buying access to the sequence, to the output of Moon Sequence's creative process, to exactly the position Selene had written in the margin of her notebook: *don't let him control the sequence.*
Adrien received the offer with a quality she recognized as more layered than it appeared. He did not refuse. He did not accept. He expressed appropriate consideration, appropriate respect for the generosity of the terms, appropriate need for time to review with his team. It was the correct response in every dimension. It was the response of someone who had thought about what this moment would require before the moment arrived.
Lucien left at two thirty-seven. Three minutes after he passed through the entrance doors, the lobby returned to something that felt like honest air.
Elara and Adrien stood by the reflecting pool.
*"You didn't refuse,"* she said.
*"No."
*"He thinks he's winning."
Adrien looked at the pool — the light doing its work on the water, the impossible angles, everything Selene had built still functioning after ten years. *"Let him think that for one more week,"* he said. *"Once he believes he's winning, he stops looking for what he might be losing."
She looked at the pool beside him. The afternoon light moved on the surface — patient, deliberate, bending at its characteristic angle toward the ceiling, pointing upward, pointing toward everything that had been waiting to be seen.
*"He looked at this building like he owned it,"* she said.
*"He thought he did, once."* Adrien was quiet for a moment. *"He's going to find out what it actually belongs to."
That evening, Mira found the payment records. Not one transaction — a series of them, spanning a decade, from a shell company whose beneficial ownership traced through three jurisdictions before arriving, if you were patient and methodical enough to follow it, at the name on Lucien's gallery incorporation documents. The payments went to an account held by Rémy Aubert. The first payment was dated eight days after the night Selene disappeared. The most recent was dated three weeks before Moon Sequence began.
Elara sat with the records for a long time after Mira showed them to her.
Then she went to find Rémy.
