Celia Rook came without appointment on the morning of the day before opening night.
This was different from her first visit, which had carried the specific confidence of someone arriving to assess. This time she came through the service entrance — not the main doors, the service entrance, the entrance that Elara had shown her on the second day — and she came alone, without the yellow coat that had been her armor on the previous occasion. She was wearing something quieter. Her expression, when Elara found her in the atrium lobby, was the expression of someone who has been carrying a decision for a long time and has finally arrived at the point where the carrying has to stop.
"I need to speak with you," Celia said. "Just you. Not Adrien yet."
Elara looked at her for a moment, reading the quality of the request — not manipulative, not strategic, the genuine request of someone who has calculated that this is the form the conversation needs to take. "All right," she said. "Walk with me."
They went to the restaurant on the second floor, which had become, over the past month, the space where the important conversations that needed a table happened. Elara did not turn on the lights — the morning light through the south glass wall was sufficient. They sat across from each other with the bay behind Celia and the empty restaurant around them.
"The article yesterday," Celia said. "I didn't write it. I want to be clear about that."
"I know you didn't write it."
"But I know who the sources were. Two of them." She set her hands on the table. "People in the Valmere arts community who have benefited from Lucien's network for a long time, who believed the framing he gave them because believing it was safer than not believing it." A pause. "I was in a position to be one of those sources, last month. I chose not to be. That is not the same as not having been that kind of person before."
Elara waited.
"Aster Hall," Celia said. It was a different kind of saying than the way she had said it in this building before — not the deployment of information as a positioning tool, but a confrontation with her own previous use of it. "I left you after the incident because leaving you was the path that cost me least. I told myself it was because the questions were unresolved. The truth was that Lucien had already made clear, in the way he made things clear without saying them directly, that supporting you was inconvenient for him." She paused. "I have been living with that for three years."
Elara looked at her. The morning light was doing its characteristic thing through the south glass — finding the crystal on the tables, the surfaces, the specific conversation happening in the room. She let it.
"What changed?" she asked.
"You came back," Celia said, simply. "You came back and you didn't explain yourself or defend yourself, and Adrien Solace chose you specifically and wouldn't explain that either, and the building started — being a different kind of thing than it was. I have been watching from a distance and I have been asking myself why I feel implicated by a light installation." A brief, honest pause. "The answer is that I know something I should have said three years ago."
"Tell me."
"The Aster Hall lighting failure was not an equipment malfunction. I know this because two months after the incident, I received a message from a technical consultant I had used on other projects — an anonymous message, forwarded through a clean account — that described the specific mechanism. A remote override, introduced into the building's secondary system. The message said the source was the same as an incident ten years prior at a venue in Valmere." She paused. "I didn't go to the investigators with this. I told myself the evidence was too thin, the source too anonymous. The truth is that I understood what going to the investigators would have meant for my relationship with Lucien's network."
The restaurant received this. The south light moved across the empty tables.
"Why now?" Elara asked.
"Because tomorrow night something is going to happen in this building," Celia said, "and I know Lucien has something prepared for it, and I do not want to be the person who knew and was silent again." She paused. "I don't know what he has planned. But I know he is not here to watch an installation. He is here because he believes that whatever this building has been holding, he can still control the moment it comes out."
Elara nodded slowly. "The remote trigger Theo found."
Celia looked at her. "You know about it."
"We isolated it two days ago. He doesn't know." Elara considered for a moment. "What I need from you is something different. He's bringing seven guests — people who will carry the narrative he wants if the sequence is suppressed. I need people in that room who will carry a different narrative, if the sequence is not suppressed."
Celia held her gaze. The specific quality of the look was the look of someone recognizing a form of accountability and accepting it. "I can do that," she said.
"Not press coverage," Elara said. "I have press. I need witnesses from the arts community. People whose word means something in the places where Lucien's narrative has been running for ten years."
"I know the right people," Celia said. "I've spent twenty years building relationships in this community. I can have five people in that room tomorrow night who will understand what they're seeing and will say so accurately afterward."
"Then do that."
They stood. Celia moved toward the door and then paused, the pause of someone with one more thing and the awareness that saying it might not be received well.
"I'm sorry," she said. "For three years ago. I know that this—" she gestured, a small gesture that encompassed the room and the building and something beyond both "—is not the same as not having done it. But I am sorry."
Elara looked at her. "I know," she said. Not warmly — but not coldly either. Accurately. It was a real apology and it deserved a real reception.
She found Adrien in the archive room after Celia left and told him everything.
She had half-expected him to want to verify, to analyze, to place Celia's information into the strategic map he maintained of all the moving parts. Instead he listened, and when she finished he said: "Alright. Trust your read on her."
Four words. She felt the weight of them — not the words themselves but the quality of the trust in them. He was trusting her read on a person who had betrayed her. He was not inserting his own assessment of whether that trust was warranted. He was giving her the space to make the call.
She thought about the Adrien of four weeks ago, who would have needed to verify, who would have consulted his own strategic analysis before accepting information from a source he had not evaluated. She thought about the Adrien who had not told her why he hired her, who had controlled the parameters of her access to the building's history, who had needed to manage every element of a situation before he could move forward.
*He has changed,* she thought. *Not completely. Not irrevocably. But in the specific way that matters, in the direction that matters.*
That evening, Theo came to the archive room with the final technical report on the basement control room.
"The trigger unit is a commercially available remote activation device," he said, setting the report on the table. "Standard code-lock, consumer-grade encryption. Whoever planted it expected that if it was found, it would look like a piece of building infrastructure rather than a deliberate tool." He paused. "There's a second component I found this afternoon. The trigger doesn't just interrupt the power to the sequence's primary systems. It activates a secondary lighting source — a pre-positioned set of projectors I found in the upper atrium storage room, rigged to the building's emergency power supply. If triggered, it would flood the atrium with a specific configuration of light at the moment the sequence reached its climax."
"Designed to obscure the sequence's output," Elara said.
"Or replace it." Theo set a photograph on the table — the projectors, their angle, their likely output configuration. "At high intensity, at the right wavelength, it would effectively blind the audience to whatever the sequence was producing at that moment. Anyone in the room would see the flood of the secondary source rather than the sequence."
She looked at the photograph. She thought about Selene at twenty-six, building her evidence into the building's surfaces, trusting the building to hold it until someone came with the right light. She thought about Lucien Valez, who had been one step ahead ten years ago and intended to be one step ahead tomorrow night.
"We remove the projectors tonight," she said. "And we reprogram the emergency power system to exclude the secondary circuit entirely."
"That's what I was waiting for you to say," Theo said, and stood up with the expression of someone who already had his tools ready.
