The chair was empty.
Elara noticed this before she sat down, before anyone else in the room had registered it as significant rather than incidental — Theo was sometimes late to things, had the specific relationship with scheduled start times of someone whose internal clock ran on technical rather than social logic. But the quality of the empty chair in the context of this afternoon, in the context of the glass on the atrium floor three hours ago, was different from the quality of an ordinary absence.
She looked at Mira.
Mira was already looking at the chair.
The briefing room was the archive room — they had been using it for team meetings since the second week, its single window and its close walls giving it a quality of containment that the open atrium lacked. Four chairs around the table. Three occupied.
"He was in the basement at eleven," Adrien said, from his position at the table's end. He had also clocked the absence. "I spoke with him after the rigging incident. He was running the analogue system checks."
"His phone's going to voicemail," Mira said, looking at her screen. She had the team's contact roster open and was working through the building's last keycard logs with the focused efficiency of someone who had decided the situation required immediate data rather than speculation.
Elara stood. "I'll check the sound studio."
The studio on the third floor was empty. The equipment was there — Theo's laptop on the workbench, the headphones he wore around his neck at all times hanging from the monitor arm, the coffee cup from this morning still on the table beside his notebook. The quality of a space that has been left by someone who expected to return.
Beside the laptop, a small external drive. Black, unremarkable, the kind of drive used for field recording backup. And beside the drive, a piece of paper torn from Theo's notebook — his handwriting, the loose practical print of someone who wrote quickly and for function rather than presentation.
*Open this if I don't show. Password: Selene's first note.*
Elara picked up the drive and the note and went back to the archive room.
She set them on the table without speaking. Adrien read the note. Mira read it. The room understood what they were looking at.
"Password," Mira said.
"G," Elara said.
Mira plugged in the drive and typed the password and the drive opened. Two files: an audio recording and a document titled *Valez_meeting_record.*
The document was a transcript — not automated, typed manually, in Theo's characteristic style of recording important information: date, location, participants, and then the conversation itself, rendered with the accuracy of someone who had made the decision to document and had brought their full attention to the task of documentation.
Four days ago. A café near the harbor. Lucien Valez and Theo Marant.
They read it in silence. Elara read it twice — once for the content and once for the specific texture of the offer that Lucien had made, the way it had been constructed, the particular language of someone who had made offers like this before and had developed an efficient vocabulary for them. A specific sum. A specific ask. The ask framed as insurance rather than corruption — *just make sure the primary sequence has an unrecoverable error at minute eleven. Not a total failure. An error that looks technical. That can be attributed to equipment. You understand these things happen.*
Theo's response, also transcribed: *I need to think about it.*
And then, at the bottom of the document, a note in parentheses that was Theo's own editorial addition: *(I was not thinking about it. I was buying time to record the conversation.)*
Mira opened the audio file.
Lucien Valez's voice, in person, was different from the voice Elara had imagined reading the transcript — lower, more considered, with the specific quality of someone who had developed a physical instrument for the same reason he had developed everything else: because it was a tool. She listened to the recording with the part of her that had been trained to read the content and the part that read the delivery and both parts arrived at the same conclusion.
He had done this before. The ease of it — the efficiency, the established vocabulary of the offer, the smooth transition from social interaction to negotiation — was the ease of someone who had offered this kind of arrangement many times, who had calibrated the terms and the phrasing through iteration, who knew which approaches worked and which didn't because he had tested them.
The recording ended.
"He's not in the building," Mira said. She had been tracking the keycard logs while they listened. "He left at six forty this morning. Before anyone else was up." She paused. "He knew someone was watching for him. He left before they were watching."
"And left the drive for us to find," Adrien said.
"He didn't leave without information," Elara said. "He left because he was safe enough to leave and had already done what needed doing. The drive is what mattered — not him being here."
Her phone rang. An unknown number, which in the context of today meant a number Theo was calling from rather than his own.
She answered.
"I'm at the harbor café," Theo said. His voice was its usual voice — slightly dry, slightly amused at the edges, the voice of someone who found the situation absurd in a way that did not prevent him from taking it seriously. "The one with the blue awning. I've been here since seven. I noticed someone outside my building last night and decided that being somewhere else was the correct response to that." A pause. "Also I didn't want to deal with whatever face Adrien would make if I told him in person."
"Are you safe?" Elara asked.
"I'm eating a croissant," Theo said. "I'm fine. Is the drive there?"
"Yes."
"Good. That's the important part. I can do the rest of what needs doing from anywhere — I just need to be in the basement at sequence time. Someone should probably come and get me before then, because I don't particularly want to walk through Valmere with someone following me."
She looked at Adrien across the table. He was already standing.
"He's at the harbor café," she said. "Blue awning."
"I'll go," Adrien said. He was at the door before she had finished the sentence — not urgently, but with the specific directness of someone who has identified the correct action and is performing it without delay. "Back before four."
She watched him go without stopping him. This was something she had been learning, in small increments, over the past weeks — the difference between stopping someone from doing the thing they needed to do and asking them to do it differently. Adrien was going to get Theo. He was going alone. She had information that suggested the situation had some risk attached to it, and she was choosing to give him the space to manage that risk because he was capable of managing it and because treating him as incapable of managing it would have been a form of the same protectiveness that had cost Selene her brother's presence when she needed it.
She sat down at the table.
Mira was looking at her with the expression she used when she had something to say and was deciding on the form.
"You let him go without a safety check," Mira said. Not an accusation — an observation, the kind that preceded a question.
"He knows how to take care of himself in a low-level surveillance situation," Elara said. "He's been navigating this building's politics for a month. And Theo is at a public café with witnesses." She paused. "And yes, I could have asked him to take someone with him. I chose not to."
Mira considered this. "That's a different choice than you would have made three weeks ago."
"I know," Elara said.
The archive room was quiet. Through the closed door, the sounds of the building's final preparation continued — footsteps, equipment, the specific density of a space being readied for people. Five hours.
"Are you all right?" Mira asked. Not about Theo.
Elara thought about the glass on the atrium floor. She thought about the cầu kính two nights ago. She thought about *after this* and what lived in it.
"Tonight needs to come first," she said. "Yes. I'm all right. Tonight needs to come first."
Mira nodded and opened her laptop.
Adrien returned at three forty-seven with Theo, who was carrying his laptop and the drive and an expression of someone who had made a decision about what kind of person he was going to be and was at peace with the decision even if the decision was inconvenient.
"I'm staying for the event," Theo announced, setting his equipment on the archive room table. "I know I said I'd be in the basement, but I want to be in the building for the whole thing. I signed a confidentiality agreement ten years ago because I was afraid of what saying something would cost me." He looked at the table. "I'm done making that kind of calculation."
Elara looked at him. "The basement anchor needs someone to monitor it during the sequence. You're the only one who knows that system."
"I'll be in the basement," he said. "For the sequence. I'll be in the building for everything else." He met her eyes. "That's where I should have been ten years ago. I'm here now."
She nodded. It was the correct answer, and it was the answer of someone who had arrived at it through real cost rather than comfortable principle.
Four hours. The building was ready. The team was here. The sequence was built and verified and waiting.
The evening was going to happen.
