It was Diana, in the end, who broke the four-day silence, though not in the way either of them had spent the past several days rehearsing.
Friday had arrived with the same low-grade tension that had characterized every day since the phone call, though something about the specific exhaustion of a full work week finally catching up with her had left Diana with considerably less patience for careful avoidance than she'd managed on previous evenings. She'd spent the entire session with her last client of the day only half-present, nodding along to complaints about shoulder mobility while her mind ran, obsessively, through the same tired loop it had been stuck on for four days now — Arthur's voice catching on her name at dinner Thursday, the interrupted sentence neither of them had ever finished, the growing, unbearable awareness that whatever this was between them had reached a point where continued silence had become its own kind of exhausting decision, requiring as much active effort to maintain as honesty would have required to simply let go.
Priya had cornered her again in the locker room before she left, asking, with unusual directness, whether Diana intended to actually address whatever was clearly eating at her, or simply continue running an extra mile every day until the problem resolved itself through sheer cardiovascular attrition. Diana had deflected, as always, though the question had lingered uncomfortably on her walk home, arriving, apparently, at precisely the moment she needed to hear it, however unwelcome the delivery. She'd spent most of that walk composing increasingly elaborate justifications for continued silence, each one collapsing under its own weight by the time she reached her building, until finally, standing outside the door of apartment 404 with her key still in her bag, she'd simply decided, with the particular clarity that came from sheer exhaustion, that something had to change tonight, even if that something was only a single, careful, hypothetical message.
She sat on her bed that Friday night, phone in hand, staring at the dormant Nexus conversation for nearly twenty minutes before finally deciding on an approach that sidestepped direct confrontation entirely — not an admission, not a question demanding immediate resolution, but something smaller, safer, a single toe dipped back into water that had gone cold and untested for four long days. She'd drafted and deleted at least six different opening messages before settling on this particular framing, hypothetical and deniable enough that she could always, if it went badly, claim she'd simply been discussing an abstract scenario rather than the specific, undeniable reality currently sitting on the other side of her bedroom wall. She thought, briefly, about the version of herself who had faced down actual armies without this much deliberation, and found the comparison almost laughably unhelpful — armies, at least, had never had the power to make her feel quite this exposed simply by existing on the other side of a message thread.
She thought about Zafir's small, offhand comment from the café days earlier, about collisions rarely turning out as catastrophic as the anticipation leading up to them, and decided, finally, that waiting for perfect courage was simply a more sophisticated way of waiting forever, a truth she suspected applied equally well to combat and to whatever this current, terrifying situation technically counted as.
*Ánh Sáng Ban Mai: Hypothetically, if two people both realized something about each other, and neither one said anything, how long do you think that could reasonably go on before it became more exhausting than just saying it?*
She hit send before she could second-guess the wording any further, then sat frozen, staring at the screen, immediately regretting every choice that had led to this exact message existing in the world. She set the phone face-down on her comforter, picked it back up thirty seconds later, checked it had actually sent, and set it back down again, her heart beating with an intensity that felt wildly disproportionate to four careful, hypothetical sentences.
On the other side of the wall, Arthur's phone buzzed against the coffee table. He'd been staring blankly at a technical document for the better part of an hour without absorbing a single sentence, and the notification arrived like a small, electric shock, jolting him fully upright before he'd even read the actual content.
He read her message twice, something in his chest loosening at the specific, careful phrasing — not a confrontation, not a demand, simply an honest observation delivered in the safest possible format, exactly the kind of oblique approach he might have chosen himself, had he possessed her nerve to actually send anything at all. He'd spent the past four days composing an entire library of unsent messages in his head, each one abandoned for being either too direct or too evasive, and here she was, apparently having solved the exact problem he'd failed to solve himself, simply by wrapping the truth in enough hypothetical padding to make it survivable.
*Hắc Long Cô Độc: Hypothetically, I'd guess considerably longer than either party would like to admit. Possibly indefinitely, if both parties are sufficiently stubborn and prone to interrupting themselves at crucial moments.*
*Ánh Sáng Ban Mai: That's oddly specific for a hypothetical.*
*Hắc Long Cô Độc: I contain multitudes. Some of them oddly specific.*
There was a pause, longer this time, both of them sitting in their separate rooms with the exact same racing pulse, the exact same awareness that this conversation had just tilted, almost imperceptibly, toward something neither of them could easily retreat from now. Diana stared at the ceiling for a long moment, gathering whatever remained of her nerve, before typing the next message, her thumb hovering over the send button for nearly a full minute before finally committing.
*Ánh Sáng Ban Mai: Can I ask you something else? Still hypothetically, if it's easier that way.*
*Hắc Long Cô Độc: Go ahead.*
*Ánh Sáng Ban Mai: If those two hypothetical people decided not to say the actual words yet — not because they were scared, or not only because of that, but because saying it directly felt like it might collapse something fragile that's been working precisely because it wasn't fully named — would that be a reasonable thing to want? Or just cowardice wearing a more sophisticated disguise?*
Arthur read the message several times, recognizing, with a kind of aching clarity, exactly the same reasoning he'd been circling in his own head for four days now — the fear that naming the thing directly, making Diana and Ánh Sáng Ban Mai the same undeniable person out loud, in words, might somehow break whatever fragile, precious equilibrium had let them both be honest in the first place. He thought about every version of Diana he'd come to know over the past several weeks, the combative roommate and the vulnerable stranger, and how strange it felt to finally understand they'd never actually been two separate people, only two separate permissions he'd unconsciously granted her — one to argue, one to be soft — as though a single person couldn't reasonably be allowed both at once.
*Hắc Long Cô Độc: I think it's both. I think it's a reasonable thing to want, and also cowardice, and that those two things aren't actually mutually exclusive most of the time.*
*Ánh Sáng Ban Mai: That's uncomfortably accurate.*
*Hắc Long Cô Độc: I have my moments.*
*Ánh Sáng Ban Mai: So what do we — what do those two hypothetical people do about it, then? Just keep going like this? Both knowing, neither saying?*
Arthur set the phone down for a moment, staring at the ceiling, weighing an answer that felt, for the first time in days, like it might actually matter more than any answer he'd given all week. He thought about Malphas's small, accidental piece of wisdom from days earlier — that silence tended to do more damage than truth ever managed — and found himself, despite every instinct toward careful self-preservation, deciding to test that theory directly. He'd spent an entire lifetime believing that withholding information was synonymous with strength, that a ruler who revealed too much handed his enemies a weapon. He was beginning to suspect, four days into an entirely different kind of siege, that the same instinct had simply never been designed for this particular application, and that continuing to apply it here was doing considerably more harm than any withheld truth ever could. There was a particular kind of exhaustion, he was learning, that came specifically from protecting something that didn't actually need protecting from the person standing right in front of you, and he was growing increasingly tired of carrying it.
He thought, too, about the strange, almost dizzying relief of the past hour's conversation, how much lighter the exchange had felt the moment he'd allowed himself to be even slightly more honest than caution technically permitted. It occurred to him, staring at his phone screen in the dim living room light, that perhaps this was simply what building trust with another person actually required — not one single, dramatic act of total vulnerability, but a long series of small, deliberate risks, each one slightly larger than the last, until eventually the accumulated weight of honesty outpaced the accumulated weight of fear, and one day, without quite noticing the exact moment it happened, there was simply nothing left worth hiding.
*Hắc Long Cô Độc: I think those two hypothetical people probably shouldn't keep going like this forever. I think, eventually, someone has to risk saying the actual words, even if it's frightening, even if it might change something that currently feels safe precisely because it's undefined. I think the alternative — indefinite hypotheticals, forever — sounds considerably more exhausting than whatever discomfort comes from finally being direct.*
*Ánh Sáng Ban Mai: Are you saying this as a general philosophy, or as a specific suggestion regarding a specific situation?*
*Hắc Long Cô Độc: Both, probably. I'm fairly bad at separating the two.*
There was a much longer pause this time, long enough that Arthur began composing an anxious follow-up message, worried he'd pushed too far, too fast, before her reply finally arrived.
*Ánh Sáng Ban Mai: What if I'm not ready yet. To say it directly, I mean. Not because I don't want to eventually. Just — not yet. Is that allowed?*
Something in Arthur's chest eased at the honesty of it, the vulnerability sitting plainly on the screen without any of her usual deflective humor to soften it. He recognized, reading it, the exact same fear he'd been carrying himself, dressed in slightly different words but built from identical material — not reluctance to eventually arrive at the truth, simply a desperate, understandable need for more time to prepare for what arriving there might actually cost either of them.
*Hắc Long Cô Độc: That's entirely allowed. I'm not sure I'm fully ready either, if I'm honest. I think wanting more time isn't the same as wanting to stay hidden forever. I think we're allowed to move toward it slowly, as long as we're actually moving, rather than just standing perfectly still and calling it patience.*
*Ánh Sáng Ban Mai: That's a surprisingly generous interpretation for someone who spent his previous life ruling through fear and absolute authority.*
*Hắc Long Cô Độc: I've been practicing generosity recently. It's a new skill. Still somewhat clumsy.*
*Ánh Sáng Ban Mai: I've noticed. The clumsiness, I mean. It's oddly endearing.*
Arthur felt something warm spread through his chest at that, an unfamiliar, uncomplicated happiness that had nothing to do with the careful, guarded satisfaction he usually allowed himself. He typed his response slowly, weighing each word with more care than he'd applied to anything all week, aware that whatever he said next would either deepen this fragile, careful progress or risk collapsing it entirely, and finding, for once, that the risk felt worth taking.
*Hắc Long Cô Độc: For what it's worth — and I recognize this is still, technically, hypothetical — I don't regret any of this. Even the parts that have been considerably more complicated than expected.*
*Ánh Sáng Ban Mai: Neither do I. Even the parts involving synchronized ringtones and four days of excruciating dinner small talk about plumbing.*
*Hắc Long Cô Độc: Especially those particular parts, in retrospect. They'll make an excellent story eventually, I suspect. Assuming, of course, we survive long enough to tell it properly.*
*Ánh Sáng Ban Mai: I have every intention of surviving. I've survived worse than this. Probably.*
*Hắc Long Cô Độc: Probably is doing quite a considerable lot of work in that particular sentence.*
*Ánh Sáng Ban Mai: I contain multitudes. Some of them probably, and some of them entirely certain.*
They talked for another hour after that, the conversation easing gradually back into something closer to their usual rhythm, though carrying now an entirely new layer of shared, unspoken understanding beneath every exchange — both of them acutely aware that the anonymity they'd been leaning on for weeks had become, at some point over the past four days, less a shield and more a mutually agreed-upon pause button, one they'd both silently consented to keep pressing for just a little while longer, not out of fear exactly, but out of some fragile, careful tenderness toward whatever this had become, neither of them quite ready to risk it by naming it too soon.
Diana found herself, somewhere in the middle of that hour, laughing out loud alone in her room for the first time in four days, a real, unguarded sound that surprised even her, and she pressed a hand briefly over her mouth afterward, some old, unnecessary instinct to muffle it, before catching herself and letting the laugh simply exist, unashamed, aware that whoever was listening on the other side of that wall now understood exactly what had prompted it, and found himself, if the sudden pause in his own typing was any indication, quietly delighted by the sound rather than disturbed by it.
Arthur, for his part, spent the better half of the conversation fighting the urge to simply say her name outright, testing the shape of it silently against his own thoughts each time she typed something that made him smile — a small, private rebellion against his own careful restraint that he indulged only in the privacy of his own head, unwilling yet to risk speaking it aloud, but no longer entirely able to pretend the name didn't belong, now, exactly where he kept placing it.
By the time Diana finally set her phone down that night, considerably later than either of them had intended, the apartment felt different somehow — the same four walls, the same thin barrier between their two rooms, but the silence on the other side of it no longer felt like distance. It felt, for the first time in days, like two people breathing in the dark, separately, in exactly the same rhythm, moving finally in the same direction, even if neither had yet found the nerve to close the remaining distance between them entirely.
She lay awake a while longer after locking her phone, staring at the same ceiling she'd been staring at for weeks now, and allowed herself, for the first time since the phone call, to imagine an actual version of what came next — not the vague, frightening uncertainty she'd been carrying since Tuesday, but something closer to hope, tentative and unfamiliar, the kind she hadn't let herself feel this fully in longer than she cared to admit, not since long before she'd ever set foot in this city, this apartment, this life built entirely out of the wreckage of the one she'd left behind.
She thought about all the versions of strength she'd been taught to perform back in Solaria — unwavering, untouchable, immune to doubt, incapable of ever needing anyone else — and how strange it felt now, lying in the dark of an unremarkable apartment in a world without magic, to discover that the truest strength she'd found here had looked nothing like any of that. It had looked like admitting she wasn't ready yet, and having that admission met with patience instead of disappointment. It had looked like a man on the other side of a wall choosing generosity over control, however clumsily, and meaning it, and she found, turning the thought over one final time before sleep finally claimed her, that she wanted very badly to keep discovering what other kinds of strength this strange, unglamorous new life might still have left to teach her, whenever she finally found the nerve to stop watching from a careful, hypothetical distance and simply step all the way in.
On the other side of the wall, Arthur lay on the sofa with his own phone resting on his chest, the conversation finally quiet, and found himself, for the first time since arriving in this world, genuinely looking forward to whatever the next several days might bring, rather than simply enduring them — a small, quiet shift in his own internal weather that felt, even now, more significant than he was fully prepared to examine, though he suspected, drifting slowly toward sleep, that he wouldn't be able to avoid examining it much longer.
He thought, in the last clear moments before sleep finally claimed him, about the specific phrase she'd used earlier — *I've noticed. The clumsiness, I mean. It's oddly endearing* — and found himself smiling faintly into the darkness, alone on a sofa in a city he'd once considered nothing more than a temporary sentence to be endured, now feeling, against every reasonable expectation he'd carried into this exile, unmistakably, cautiously, something close to happy. It was not the triumphant, absolute happiness he vaguely remembered from certain victories in his old life, the kind built on conquest and control. It was smaller than that, and stranger, and he suspected, even as sleep finally pulled him under, that it might turn out to matter considerably more.
