Monday mornings had always carried a specific, dreaded quality in apartment 404, but this particular Monday arrived with something Arthur hadn't expected to feel in this apartment ever again: a kind of cautious, unfamiliar lightness.
He woke to the Zumba music at six as always, except this time he didn't groan into the sofa cushions or mutter complaints under his breath. He simply lay there for a moment, listening to the bass thump through the walls, and found himself smiling faintly at the ceiling before he'd even fully processed why. The weekend had passed in a strange, suspended quality neither of them had quite named — Saturday spent in the easy, undemanding rhythm of separate errands and shared, unremarkable meals, Sunday drifting into an evening of watching a mindless action film together on the sofa, shoulders nearly touching, neither of them commenting on the lack of distance between them.
He thought, lying there listening to the music, about how strange it was that four days of anguished silence had somehow given way to this — not resolution exactly, not the dramatic clarity either of them had spent that week bracing for, but something quieter and more sustainable, a kind of gentle, deliberate thaw neither of them felt any urgent need to rush, arriving in its own time, on its own terms, considerably gentler than either of them had dared to hope for during the worst of the previous week's silence.
By the time Diana emerged from her stretching routine, toweling sweat from her forehead, she found him already upright, coffee in hand, watching her with an expression that hovered somewhere between his usual dry amusement and something new he hadn't quite mastered hiding yet.
"You're up early," she observed, reaching past him for her protein shake. "Voluntarily, even. No looking like a corpse today?"
"I've decided corpse-adjacent is beneath me as a personal brand."
"Bold new direction. I approve." She took a long drink, studying him over the rim of her bottle with an expression that suggested she was clocking something different about him too, though neither of them said so directly. "You seem oddly chipper for a Monday."
"I contain multitudes. Some of them, apparently, chipper."
Something flickered across her face at the specific phrasing — a phrase that belonged, unmistakably, to a conversation that had taken place at eleven at night through a screen rather than at six in the morning over coffee. She recovered quickly, covering it with a short laugh, but Arthur caught it, filed it away, and felt his own chest warm slightly at the small, involuntary tell.
"Well. Keep it up. Chipper is a nice change from your usual brand of barely-functional gloom." She grabbed her bag, heading for the shower, and paused at the hallway to add, almost as an afterthought, "There's coffee in the pot if you want more. I made extra. Not for any particular reason."
"Of course not."
"Obviously not."
She disappeared down the hall, and Arthur sat there a moment longer, turning the small, deniable gesture over in his mind with the same careful attention he'd once given matters of actual strategic importance. Extra coffee, made without being asked, delivered with a pointed denial of significance — it was, he was beginning to understand, exactly the dialect they'd both been speaking to each other for weeks now, long before either of them had known the other half of the conversation. He drank the extra coffee slowly, savoring it with a kind of quiet, private satisfaction that felt almost absurdly disproportionate to a beverage, and found himself already looking forward to whatever small, deniable gesture the evening might bring in return.
---
That night, the Nexus conversation picked up with an ease that had been entirely absent during the four days of careful, hypothetical circling.
*Ánh Sáng Ban Mai: I made extra coffee this morning. For no particular reason.*
*Hắc Long Cô Độc: I noticed. I drank the extra coffee. For no particular reason.*
*Ánh Sáng Ban Mai: Good. That's the correct protocol.*
*Hắc Long Cô Độc: I try to follow protocol whenever possible.*
There was a warmth to the exchange now that hadn't fully existed before the phone call — not because anything had been explicitly resolved, but because both of them had stopped pretending, even to themselves, that the anonymous stranger and the person sharing their kitchen were separate entities requiring separate emotional accounts. The unspoken agreement from Friday night held: they would keep moving, slowly, without rushing toward the words neither felt ready to say directly, but they would stop standing still and calling it patience.
*Ánh Sáng Ban Mai: Can I tell you something slightly embarrassing?*
*Hắc Long Cô Độc: Always.*
*Ánh Sáng Ban Mai: I've started looking forward to our morning arguments about the fridge more than I look forward to almost anything else in my day. Which is a strange thing to admit about arguments over refrigerator real estate.*
Arthur read the message twice, something warm and unfamiliar spreading through his chest at the admission.
*Hắc Long Cô Độc: That's not embarrassing. I feel the same, though I'll admit I've been slightly more reluctant to examine why.*
*Ánh Sáng Ban Mai: Should we examine it? Or keep it filed under "things we're aware of but not naming yet"?*
*Hắc Long Cô Độc: I think, for now, the second option. Though I reserve the right to revisit that decision without much warning.*
*Ánh Sáng Ban Mai: Fair enough. I'll allow it. This time.*
They talked for another hour, the conversation drifting into easier, warmer territory than it had occupied in days — favorite childhood memories that had nothing to do with either of their old lives, ridiculous hypothetical debates about whether a hot dog qualified as a sandwich, the specific, mundane comfort of two people slowly discovering they simply enjoyed each other's company, stripped of all the complicated weight the past week had piled onto every exchange.
*Ánh Sáng Ban Mai: For what it's worth, I think I liked you before I knew who you actually were. Which feels like it should be a strange thing to say, but somehow doesn't feel strange at all.*
*Hắc Long Cô Độc: I think the same is true for me. Which is either deeply reassuring or deeply alarming, depending on how much thought I allow myself to give it.*
*Ánh Sáng Ban Mai: Let's agree, for tonight, on reassuring.*
*Hắc Long Cô Độc: Agreed.*
She fell asleep that night with her phone still in hand, the conversation window still open, a small, unguarded smile lingering on her face long after the messages had stopped, and on the other side of the wall, Arthur lay awake a while longer, replaying her words about liking him before knowing who he was, turning the sentiment over with the same careful, disbelieving wonder he might have once reserved for news of an unexpected military victory — except this felt, somehow, considerably more valuable than any victory he remembered winning in his old life, precisely because it had cost him nothing but honesty, and had somehow returned considerably more than anything conquest ever had.
He thought, drifting toward sleep himself, about how strange it was that the version of strength he'd once measured entirely in terms of dominion and fear had turned out to be so thoroughly, comprehensively useless in this new life, and how the version replacing it — small, patient, built out of shared coffee and honest confessions typed late at night — felt, against every instinct he'd once trusted absolutely, considerably more durable than anything he'd built before.

At CyberCore the following afternoon, Malphas made his latest attempt at cornering Arthur near the break room, timing that had become almost comically predictable over the past several weeks.
"I wanted to say," Malphas began, voice pitched low, glancing around with his usual paranoid caution, "that I've been meaning to discuss something. Something important. Regarding, let's say, historical matters."
"Malphas, I have a meeting in six minutes."
"This will take considerably less time than six minutes, I promise. Or possibly more time. I haven't fully rehearsed this."
Arthur sighed, setting down the folder he'd been carrying. "Go ahead, then. Quickly."
Malphas opened his mouth, closed it, opened it again, and then, apparently losing his nerve entirely, blurted out something about quarterly product roadmaps instead, an obvious and clumsy deflection that fooled absolutely no one, least of all himself.
"That wasn't what you intended to say," Arthur observed, not unkindly.
"No," Malphas admitted, shoulders sagging. "It wasn't. I apologize. I'll try again another time. When I've built up sufficient nerve, or possibly consumed sufficient caffeine to override my own cowardice."
"Take your time." Arthur studied him for a moment, something in the man's visible, ongoing distress finally softening his usual impatience. He recognized, watching Malphas fidget with the strap of his lanyard, something uncomfortably familiar in the specific paralysis of a person who knew exactly what needed saying and simply couldn't force the words past the fear of consequence — the same paralysis he himself had been operating under for nearly a week now, regarding an entirely different, considerably more personal confession. "For what it's worth — whatever you're building up nerve to say, I suspect it will go better than you're currently imagining. Most things do."
Malphas blinked, clearly caught off guard by the unprompted kindness. "That's... unexpectedly generous of you to say."
"I've been practicing generosity recently. Still somewhat clumsy at it." Arthur offered a small, dry smile and headed off toward his meeting, leaving Malphas standing there considerably more bewildered than reassured, though something in the exchange seemed to loosen a knot he'd been carrying for weeks.
Arthur spent the actual meeting only half-present, his mind circling back, unhelpfully, to his own advice, turning it over with the specific discomfort of a man who recognized good counsel applied poorly to his own situation. He was, he reflected, considerably better at dispensing wisdom about vulnerability than at practicing it himself, a hypocrisy he found more amusing than troubling, mostly because the alternative — actual, immediate self-examination — felt considerably less appealing on a Tuesday afternoon sandwiched between two budget reviews.
He thought, walking back to his desk afterward, about the specific parallel between Malphas's ongoing struggle to apologize and his own ongoing struggle to say something considerably more tender to a woman two floors of the city away, close enough that he could probably walk there in under an hour if he actually tried. Both situations, he was beginning to suspect, required the exact same ingredient neither of them currently possessed in sufficient quantity: the willingness to risk an awkward, possibly painful moment in service of a considerably better outcome on the other side of it. He resolved, somewhat halfheartedly, to work on that willingness himself, though the resolution felt considerably easier to make in the abstract than it would likely prove to execute in practice.
Diana, meanwhile, spent her own Tuesday distracted in an entirely different direction, replaying the previous night's Nexus conversation throughout a series of otherwise unremarkable training sessions. She caught herself, more than once, smiling at nothing in particular while spotting a client's bench press, earning a confused glance that she waved off with a vague excuse about a funny text message, technically true if considerably understated. By the time she clocked out that afternoon, she'd rehearsed, entirely in her head, an embarrassing number of imagined future conversations with Arthur, none of which she had any intention of actually initiating, though the sheer volume of them suggested a shift in her own thinking she wasn't yet fully prepared to examine too closely, satisfied for now simply to let the warmth of it exist quietly, unexamined, taking up comfortable residence somewhere just beneath her usual brisk composure.
---
Arthur found himself, over the following two days, engineering small, unnecessary reasons to be in the same room as Diana more often than either of them would have previously required — offering to help carry groceries she hadn't asked him to carry, lingering in the kitchen slightly longer than his coffee actually demanded, finding excuses to ask her opinion on minor decisions he was perfectly capable of making himself.
He noticed the pattern on Wednesday evening, standing in the kitchen holding a spatula he had no actual need for, having wandered in specifically because he'd heard her come home and wanted, for reasons he was only beginning to admit to himself, simply to be near her.
The realization alarmed him more than he expected. He had spent months since his exile carefully rationing his own vulnerability, treating every instinct toward closeness as a potential liability, a lesson learned the hard way in a court full of people who had smiled while planning his downfall. And yet here he was, holding a spatula for no reason, purely because proximity to one specific, exhausting, exhilarating woman had become, somehow, more compelling than his own carefully maintained self-preservation.
He decided, standing there with the spatula, not to fight it any longer. The decision arrived with less drama than he expected — not a dramatic internal battle, simply a quiet, exhausted surrender to something that had clearly already won, days ago, probably weeks, if he was being fully honest with himself about the timeline involved. He thought, turning the spatula over idly in his hands, that perhaps this was what genuine change actually looked like — not a single, decisive moment of transformation, but a series of small, almost embarrassing surrenders, each one slightly less resisted than the last, until eventually resistance itself started to feel like the more exhausting option.
"You're hovering," Diana said, not looking up from the mail she was sorting, though a small smile tugged at the corner of her mouth. "You've been hovering for approximately four minutes now."
"I'm supervising the kitchen. Ensuring standards are maintained."
"With a spatula. For food that isn't currently being cooked."
"Precautionary supervision."
She looked up at that, studying him with an expression that held more warmth than the situation strictly warranted, both of them aware, without saying so, that the spatula was simply an excuse, and that neither of them minded the excuse existing.
"Well," she said finally, setting down her mail, "since you're here supervising anyway with your very important spatula, you might as well make yourself useful. I'm making pasta. You can chop something."
"I can chop several somethings simultaneously, if required, given sufficient counter space and proper knife safety protocols."
"Don't get too far ahead of yourself just yet. One something. We'll assess your competence before expanding your responsibilities."
They fell into an easy rhythm in the small kitchen, working alongside each other with a comfort that felt entirely new and entirely familiar at once — the same bickering, the same dry commentary on each other's technique, but underneath it now, unmistakably, something warmer, something neither of them needed to name to feel it settling comfortably into the space between them, filling the small apartment with a kind of quiet, contented ease that neither had experienced there before, not once, in all the months since they'd first, absurdly, been forced to share it.
At one point, reaching past him for the salt, her arm brushed his, and neither of them pulled away quite as quickly as the small, accidental contact strictly required — a beat too long, both of them noticing, neither of them commenting, the moment passing with nothing more than a slightly charged silence and the continued, deliberate business of chopping vegetables that no longer required quite as much concentration as either of them pretended.
"You're better at this than I expected," Diana said eventually, glancing at his careful, even knife work with something that looked almost like grudging respect. "For someone who once claimed you weren't a carpenter, you handle sharp objects with surprising competence."
"I contain hidden depths. Some of them culinary."
"I'm learning that about you. Slowly. In increments."
"That seems to be the general theme of this entire arrangement, doesn't it." He glanced at her, something unspoken passing between them, warm and patient and entirely unafraid, for once, of whatever came next. "Slowly. In increments."
"I can live with that pace," she said quietly, returning her attention to the stove, though the small, private smile she wore for the rest of the evening suggested she meant it considerably more than the casual delivery let on.
They ate dinner at the small kitchen table rather than retreating to separate corners of the apartment as they once might have, the conversation flowing easily between them in a way that required none of the careful maneuvering of the past week — simple observations about their respective days, a shared complaint about the building's persistently unreliable water pressure, an extended, entirely unserious debate about the correct ratio of garlic to everything else in a proper pasta sauce that neither of them actually cared enough about to argue seriously, though both enjoyed the pretense of doing so.
"This is nice," Diana said eventually, somewhere between bites, the observation slipping out with more sincerity than her usual deflective humor typically allowed. "This. Whatever this is now."
"It is," Arthur agreed, matching her honesty without hesitation, something in the simple exchange feeling more significant than either of the elaborate, agonized conversations they'd both rehearsed and abandoned throughout the previous week. "I'm glad we didn't ruin it by overthinking it into oblivion."
"We still might. Give us time."
"I have every confidence in our collective ability to eventually overthink something perfectly good into complete disaster. But not tonight."
"Not tonight," she agreed, and they finished the rest of the meal in a comfortable, easy silence that felt, for the first time in longer than either could remember, entirely uncomplicated — two people simply enjoying dinner together, present and unafraid, the enormous unresolved question between them set gently aside for now, patient and unhurried, exactly where they'd both silently agreed to leave it.
