The alibi held.
Not perfectly — perfect alibis were, in her experience, more suspicious than imperfect ones, because real life was inconsistent and only fabricated accounts achieved the kind of internal consistency that looked airtight on paper. Lord Vyne's alibi for the critical window had three witnesses, two of whom were members of his own household and therefore weighted accordingly, and one of whom was an imperial courier whose account was technically independent but whose professional relationship with the Ashveil Trading Guild created a conflict of interest that Gavin noted in his formal record without comment.
Not airtight. Not excluded, either.
"Inconclusive," she said, after he finished the summary.
"For now," he said.
"Which means we go to the physical evidence."
He was quiet for a moment. She had learned to read his silences well enough now to distinguish between them — this one was not processing, not deciding, but the particular quality of a person who had already decided and was framing how to communicate the decision.
"I had materials transported from the capital," he said.
She looked at him.
"When," she said.
"Four days ago." He held her gaze. "When it became apparent that the case was more complex than the initial assessment suggested."
Four days ago was the day after their first conversation. The day after she had stood in the vault doorway and said I have evidence to present. She absorbed this without showing that she was absorbing it — the implication of it, the fact that he had begun preparing for a more extensive investigation before he had formally committed to one, before he had asked her his three questions or given her supervised access or learned her name.
He had been doing the work in parallel. Before he had made the decision official, he had begun making the decision practical.
She filed this in the category labeled: things about him that require more data before I can weight them properly.
"Show me," she said.
The evidence room was on the level below the mật thất — a space she had not been through before, functional and sparse, the walls lined with shelving that held sealed containers and documented materials in the careful organization of someone who had spent years understanding that the integrity of physical evidence was the foundation of everything else. He led her through the narrow internal door she had noted weeks ago and never asked about, and she understood now why it had been there.
He had been preparing.
The materials from the capital were arranged on the central table: the goblet, sealed in a glass-and-brass case that maintained the atmospheric conditions of the original crime scene. Two sections of flooring from the banquet hall — stone, cut precisely, preserving the bloodstain patterns. The Crown Prince's formal coat, folded and documented. Correspondence between the palace household and the imperial investigative office.
She moved to the goblet first.
The Dossier had indicated that physical contact with evidence objects could trigger the memory extraction function — the three-second reconstruction of the object's most recent significant event, rendered in the particular crimson light of the system's visual interface. She had used it on three prior pieces of evidence with varying degrees of clarity. The goblet was the original vector. Whatever the system showed her from this object would be the closest she could get to a direct record of the poisoning itself.
She crouched beside the case and positioned her hand above the glass surface — close enough for the extraction to engage but not in physical contact with the seal, which she was not authorized to break.
The Dossier activated.
The extraction ran for its three seconds and she held herself completely still through it, the Disassociated Blink engaging as her attention moved fully into the reconstructed memory — and then it released and she was back in the evidence room with the cold air and the crystal light and Gavin crouching beside her.
He had crouched beside her.
At some point during the extraction, he had moved from his position near the door to a position beside her, his own attention on the goblet, close enough that when she came back into the present moment and turned her head she found him at a distance she was not prepared for — close enough that she could see the fine grain of the fabric on his shoulder, close enough that his warmth was a physical variable in the air between them.
She went perfectly still.
Not the stillness of the Disassociated Blink — the other kind, the full-body lock that her nervous system produced when the threat detection process was activated by proximity rather than danger. Every muscle held, her breath suspended for a beat, her awareness of him suddenly very loud in the absence of other sensory input.
He was looking at the goblet. She was aware that he had activated his own scan — she could see in her peripheral vision the faint luminescence of his right eye as the obsidian magic read the ambient signature of the evidence. He was doing his work. He had not moved closer for any reason except to see what she was seeing.
This did not make his proximity less present.
She breathed in. Breathed out. Reoriented.
"What did you find?" he said, without moving.
"A hand," she said. Her voice was level. Professionally level — she noted the effort it took to make it so and filed the noting away for later examination. "Placing something in the goblet. Three-second window, as expected. The resolution is sufficient to identify a signet ring on the right hand."
"Describe it."
"Not a noble family seal. The design is — " She closed her eyes briefly to access the reconstruction image with more precision. "A stylized eye within a circle. Seven rays extending from the outer edge of the circle."
She heard, rather than saw, the change in his quality of stillness.
The sun-and-eye. The Church of Light. The symbol embroidered on every official vestment, pressed into every formal seal, carved above the entrance of every Church institution in the empire.
"You are certain," he said.
"I am describing what the reconstruction shows," she said. "Yes, I am certain."
They were both crouched beside the evidence case in the cold room and neither of them moved for a moment that lasted longer than any of the previous pauses she had catalogued.
She stood up. The movement created space — she was back to a distance that registered as professional rather than proximate, and she felt the recalibration in her own system as the proximity data receded from its elevated status.
He stood a moment after her. She watched him in her peripheral vision — the controlled quality of the movement, the way he oriented himself toward the evidence rather than toward her, the particular set of his jaw that she had come to read as his response to receiving significant and inconvenient information.
"The Church," she said.
"Possibly," he said.
"The ring is distinctive."
"The ring is Church iconography," he said. "Which does not necessarily indicate Church authorship. Rings are obtained. Signets are replicated. An ecclesiastical ring on an unidentified hand is not evidence of institutional involvement."
She looked at him. "I know," she said. "I am telling you what the evidence shows. I am not telling you what it means. That requires more."
"Yes," he said.
"But it changes the direction of the more."
A pause. "Yes," he said again, with a different quality.
They stood in the evidence room with the goblet between them and the floor sections and the documented correspondence, and the cold air of the borderland coming through the stone walls, and the crystal light that made everything in the room look both precise and slightly unreal.
"Malakai," she said. Quietly. Not a conclusion — a direction.
"Possibly," he said. Again. But this time the word had something beneath it — not the professional qualification of a careful investigator, but the particular quality of a man who had suspected something for a long time and had just received the first piece of evidence that might confirm it.
She looked at him directly. "Do you want to continue?"
He looked at her.
Both eyes present. The amber one doing the thing she had not yet fully categorized. The blue one quiet — not scanning, not running its instrument function, just present in the way that eyes were present when a person was looking at something they were paying full attention to.
"I have always wanted to continue," he said.
She held his gaze for a moment.
She did not ask him to clarify. She did not need to — the statement was precise, and precision was something she understood, and what it was precise about was something she had been carefully not naming since approximately the second day in the vault.
She filed it in the category it belonged in.
"Then we go to the financial records tomorrow," she said.
"Yes," he said.
They left the evidence room and went back upstairs, and she did not think about the three seconds of crouching beside him in the cold air, and she thought about almost nothing else.
