She arrived at the mật thất at ten minutes before six.
The kỵ sĩ escort, whose name she had learned was Aldric — not the Crown Prince, a different Aldric, a coincidence that she did not comment on — let her in and took his position outside the door with the particular quality of stillness that good soldiers developed, the ability to be present and invisible simultaneously. She appreciated it. She set her materials on the secondary table and opened the Dossier and began.
Gavin arrived at three minutes before six.
He saw her immediately — she was aware of the fractional pause at the door, the half-second of recalibration at finding her already present and already working. She did not look up.
"I found something last night," she said.
He came to the main desk. She heard him sit, heard the leather case open, heard the particular sound of someone who was going to say something and had decided not to. She looked up.
He was watching her with the expression she was beginning to catalog as his working-attention face — not the full formal assessment, not the passive scan at baseline, something in between, the quality of a person who had allocated a portion of their focus to the problem and a portion to the person working on it.
"Show me," he said.
She turned her materials to face him across the table.
The analysis was laid out on three pages — she had learned to work on paper here, in the absence of the digital tools that would have made the presentation cleaner, and had developed a shorthand that was legible to her and, she hoped, legible to him. The first page was the pattern map: three imperial events from the preceding month, the guest lists cross-referenced, the position data reconstructed from the seating arrangements in the official records she had obtained through the Dossier.
"Three events," she said. "The autumn gala at the Imperial Gallery, the dedication ceremony for the new judicial annex, and the Crown Prince's name-day dinner. At each one, the same name appears in the guest list in a position with a clear sightline to the Crown Prince's table and reasonable proximity to the service stations." She pointed. "Lord Cassel Vyne. Minor nobility, commercial interests, unremarkable social profile."
Gavin looked at the page. She watched him read — the rapid, thorough quality of his reading, the way his eyes moved across the data with the efficiency of someone who processed text quickly and retained it well.
"This is attendance data," he said.
"Yes."
"Attendance at events is not unusual for someone of his social tier."
"Attendance at the same relative position at three consecutive events is unusual," she said. "Position is a choice. You move through a social event; you are not fixed. The fact that at all three events Lord Vyne ended the evening within visual and physical range of the Crown Prince's service area is not explained by coincidence once, improbable twice, and pattern-consistent three times." She moved to the second page. "The second element is this: Lord Vyne's commercial interests include a partial stake in the Ashveil Trading Guild."
She watched him process the name.
"Ashveil," he said.
"The same family as Lady Maren Ashveil. Your witness." She let that sit for a moment. "I am not claiming kinship creates conspiracy. I am noting that a connection exists between the person who provided the testimony that condemned me and the person whose behavioral pattern is most consistent with the crime being attributed to me."
Gavin set the page down. He picked up the second one and read it with the same efficiency. She waited.
"The third page," he said.
She had been waiting for him to ask. The third page was the element she was least certain about — the connection that was real but that required a step of inference she could not yet make fully empirical.
"Lord Vyne's guild," she said, "has commercial relationships with three import suppliers in the eastern provinces. One of them specializes in pharmaceutical compounds. Controlled substances. The kind of material that requires imperial licensing to import and handle." She pointed to the relevant section. "Including crystalline alkaloids."
The silence that followed had a specific weight to it.
Gavin put the third page down. He aligned the three pages at their edges — a gesture she had noted before, the compulsive precision of a person who straightened things as a form of thinking. He looked at the aligned pages. He looked at her.
"Access," he said.
"Yes."
"Knowledge."
"Yes."
"Proximity."
"Yes. All three. Which is the full requirement set for how this crime was committed." She paused. "I cannot prove intent. I cannot prove execution. What I can prove is that Lord Vyne possessed, uniquely among the guest list, the combination of means and position to have committed this crime in the manner it was committed. That is what the evidence supports."
He stood up.
She had learned to read his standing — there were different kinds, for different purposes. This one was the thinking-stand, the physical reorientation that accompanied a significant cognitive shift, the body moving because the mind needed the movement.
He walked to the east wall and stood with his back to her for a moment. She waited.
"Verification," he said.
"Independent, yes. I know."
"There are three ways to verify this that do not involve physical evidence." He turned. "First: his alibi for the period in question. Second: the financial records of the guild transactions. Third: an examination of the testimony procedure — specifically, whether Lady Maren Ashveil had prior contact with Lord Vyne in the period between the Crown Prince's death and the delivery of her testimony."
She looked at him. He had just laid out, in three precise steps, exactly the verification framework she would have recommended. She noted this — filed it in the category of things about him that continued to constitute useful data.
"The testimony procedure," she said. "That's the one that gives us the secondary source connection too, if it's there."
"Yes."
"Can you access those records?"
"I can access all of them," he said. "The question is time." He came back to the desk and sat down. The quality of his movement had shifted — still controlled, still precise, but with a different underlying energy. The energy of someone who had been given a direction and was now moving in it. "The alibi first. That is the fastest to check."
"And if it holds?"
"Then we reconsider the pattern analysis." He looked at her directly. "And if it doesn't?"
"Then we go to the financial records and the testimony procedure," she said. "And we build the case the rest of the way."
He held her gaze for a moment. She was aware of the scan running — the low-level passive presence of his ability, which she had stopped actively registering in the way she had stopped actively registering the cold, because some things became part of the background when they were constant.
"I'll arrange the alibi check," he said. "This afternoon."
She nodded. Then, because the question had been at the edge of her working attention and the moment felt right: "The kỵ sĩ you assigned me — Aldric. He's good."
"He is," Gavin said.
"He also writes everything down."
A pause. "That is part of his function."
"I know." She met his gaze. "I'm not asking you to change it. I'm noting that I know."
He looked at her for a moment with the expression she had filed as the one he wore when she said something that was both what he expected and slightly beyond it — the combination of confirmation and recalibration that she had come to think of as his particular form of being impressed, which he would never allow to be visible as such.
"The alibi check," he said. "Three o'clock. Be ready."
She was.
