The first morning as a consultant began with better light.
Not metaphorically — literally. The room she had been moved to overnight was on the upper levels of the fortress, with a narrow window that admitted actual daylight rather than the reflected violet glow of obsidian crystals, and she stood at it for a full minute before the kỵ sĩ arrived to escort her to the mật thất, registering the particular quality of northern winter light: pale, horizontal, with the quality of something that had traveled a great distance to arrive and was still catching its breath.
She had spent the night building the secondary source analysis. Whoever had been providing Gavin with information outside the formal record had done so through a channel specific enough to indicate access and broad enough to indicate institutional standing. Not a private citizen. Not a household staff member. Someone with visibility into the investigation and reason to shape its direction.
She had three candidates. She had ranked them by probability. She had not yet had access to the materials that would let her eliminate two of them.
The mật thất was larger than she had registered in her first assessment of it. She had been in and out of it enough times now to have mapped its spatial logic: the main desk, the filing system along the east wall, the secondary table where she had been positioned for the formal sessions, the narrow internal door that she had not been through and had not asked about. The crystals here were larger than in the vault — darker, the light they produced more focused and directional, creating the particular quality of illumination she had come to associate with serious work being done seriously.
Gavin was already present when she arrived. He was standing at the east wall with a folder open in one hand and the quality of concentration she recognized as deep — the slight forward angle of his posture, the compression of his expression into something closer to pure attention than his default neutral. He did not acknowledge her entrance, which she had learned to read as neither dismissal nor impoliteness, but simply the behavior of a person who did not interrupt their thinking for social performance.
She sat at the secondary table and opened her own materials and they worked, in a silence that had become familiar enough over the past four days to feel like a working silence rather than a loaded one.
Forty minutes in, the door opened.
Not a kỵ sĩ from the fortress. She registered the difference immediately — the footsteps had a different cadence, the door opened with the slightly exaggerated care of someone who was not accustomed to its weight, and the figure that entered was wearing white.
The white of the Church of Light's formal vestments was a specific white — not the warm white of undyed wool or the neutral white of formal court dress, but the precise, slightly cool white of fabric that had been treated to maintain its brightness as a statement. The sun-and-eye sigil of the Church was embroidered across the chest in gold thread, and the man wearing it was young — younger than she had expected, perhaps twenty-five, with the careful expression of someone who had been given an important errand and was concentrating on not making mistakes.
He carried a letter.
The seal on it was significant. She could see from her position at the secondary table that the wax was deep gold and impressed with an image she recognized from the Dossier's background materials on imperial institutions — the full seal of the High Pontiff, which was used for communications of the highest formal weight rather than ordinary ecclesiastical correspondence.
Gavin turned from the east wall.
He looked at the messenger with the expression she had filed as his professional neutral — the one that gave nothing away and was therefore, she had come to understand, itself a kind of communication. He crossed to where the messenger stood and accepted the letter without comment.
The messenger delivered his accompanying verbal message with the cadence of someone reciting something memorized: "His Holiness Pontiff Malakai extends greetings to the Grand Arbiter of the Valerand Empire and respectfully requests the timely resolution of the matter of the condemned Vivian Voss, in accordance with the Church's established rights under the Imperial Compact, within a period of no more than forty-eight hours from the delivery of this communication."
He stopped. Clasped his hands. Waited.
Gavin read the letter. He read it with the same attention he gave everything, which meant completely and once, and then he folded it along its original creases and held it back out toward the messenger.
"Convey to His Holiness that the Grand Arbiter has received his communication and will respond in due course."
The messenger's expression registered the very specific form of discomfort that came from being given a response that was technically correct and practically unsatisfying to deliver. He took the letter back. He bowed, more shallowly than he had probably intended when he walked in. He left.
Gavin stood where he was for a moment after the door closed.
She had been watching him with the peripheral attention she used when she did not want to be observed watching — angled toward her own materials, processing rate slowed, primary attention on him. What she saw in that moment was: a man who had expected this and was managing his response to it with the controlled economy of someone who had learned that visible reaction was a form of concession.
He turned back to the east wall. Picked up the folder. Continued reading.
She waited approximately ninety seconds.
"Forty-eight hours," she said.
"Yes."
"That is a formal request under the Imperial Compact."
"It is."
"Which means —"
"Which means it carries weight," he said, "without constituting an order. The Church has rights under the Compact. So does this office." He turned a page. "The question of which rights take precedence in a given circumstance is a matter of legal interpretation, which happens to be within my jurisdiction."
She processed this. "So you can delay."
"I can interpret."
"For how long."
He was quiet for a moment. She watched his profile — the jaw, the line of concentration, the particular quality of a person doing a calculation they had already done and were running again to confirm.
"Practically," he said, "thirty-six hours before a non-response becomes politically untenable."
She did the arithmetic. "Then we have thirty-six hours."
"I have thirty-six hours," he said, with a precision that was clearly intentional. "This is my investigation. The constraints on it are mine."
She recognized the correction. She recognized also that he had made it, and that the making of it was itself information — he was drawing a line around the formal structure of the situation, maintaining the architecture of who was responsible for what, in the same way that a person maintained load-bearing walls even while renovating around them.
She did not push against the correction. "Then let's not waste yours," she said.
Something in his expression shifted — a quality she was cataloguing as the response he had when she said something that aligned with his expectations in a way that was slightly better than the expectation itself. Not surprise. A calibration adjustment in the direction of confirmation.
He brought his materials to the main desk. She brought hers to the chair across from him. And they worked.
For four hours, they built the timeline together — she with the Dossier's accumulated data, he with the physical records and the institutional knowledge that she lacked. He knew the social geography of the capital in a way that the Dossier could not provide: which families had standing rivalries, which officials had competing interests, which members of the household had been recently promoted or recently passed over, the texture of institutional life that did not make it into official records but shaped everything that happened within them.
She learned from listening to him work — the way he moved through the material, the questions he prioritized, the things he noted without commenting on because they were already integrated into his model of the situation. He was, she recognized with the particular clarity of one analytical mind observing another, very good at this. Not the way she was good at it — his method was different, more intuitive, built on pattern recognition developed through institutional knowledge rather than psychological profiling. But the underlying quality — the capacity to hold multiple variables simultaneously and feel where they did and did not cohere — was the same.
At the end of the four hours, the kỵ sĩ came to escort her back to her room.
She gathered her materials. Stood. And then, because the question had been sitting at the edge of her working attention for most of the session:
"The secondary source," she said. "The person providing you with information outside the formal record. I have three candidates. I would like to eliminate two of them tomorrow."
He looked up from the desk.
"How," he said.
"Cross-reference their access windows against the timeline. If one of them couldn't have known what they told you — because they weren't in a position to observe it — then they're being fed the information rather than sourcing it. Which tells us something different."
He was quiet for a moment. "Tomorrow," he said. "Bring the candidates."
She turned to go.
"Six o'clock," he said, not looking up.
She stopped. "I'll be here."
"I know," he said.
She walked to the door with her kỵ sĩ escort and did not turn around and did not comment on those two words and the particular quality with which they had been delivered, and she thought about them all the way back to her room, and she was still thinking about them when she sat down to continue building the secondary source analysis in the insufficient light of a northern winter evening.
