He came back in the afternoon.
She had been expecting him — not with certainty, but with the particular probabilistic confidence that came from knowing enough about a person's decision-making patterns to anticipate their next move. Gavin Blackthorn processed privately and acted quickly once a decision had been reached. The morning's disclosure had been significant enough to require genuine processing time. Afternoon was about right.
He came without kỵ sĩ. Without the leather case. Without the folder or any of the formal apparatus of interrogation. He sat down across from her at the table and folded his hands on its surface and looked at her with an expression she had not yet catalogued — something that was not quite the assessment look and not quite the instrument look, something she was tentatively filing under: decided.
"Three questions," he said. "Answer them honestly and I will consider your proposal."
She noted the language. Not "I will approve your proposal." Not "I will give you what you asked for." Consider. He was being precise about what he was offering, which meant he was being honest about the limits of what he could commit to, which meant — she registered this with some significance — he was treating this as a negotiation rather than a verdict.
"Ask them," she said.
He did not look away from her when he spoke. This was, she had learned, his baseline for conversations that mattered to him — the full engagement of his attention, both eyes present, the passive scan running in the background like a process that never fully terminated.
"Vivian Voss," he said. "The person you describe as the previous occupant of this body. Where is she?"
She had thought about this question. She had known it was coming and she had considered her options with the thoroughness she brought to all consequential preparation. She could speculate. She could construct a theory based on the mechanics of the transmigration, of which she knew almost nothing. She could offer comfort in the form of a framework that would make the situation feel more legible to someone whose world did not have a category for what she was describing.
She chose none of those options.
"I don't know," she said. "I arrived in this body with no knowledge of the mechanism or the origin. She was not here when I arrived. I have no information about where she went."
His eyes registered the truth of it — she watched the scan process the statement and return its neutral result, the absence of the markers it was trained to find. He nodded once, a small economical motion. Filed and continued.
"Where do you come from?"
This was the harder question. Not because the answer was more dangerous — though it was — but because the honest answer required admitting the full extent of what she did not know. She had spent her professional life in environments where not knowing was a liability, where the appearance of certainty was as important as certainty itself, where admitting ignorance was a form of professional exposure.
She had also spent her professional life learning that fabricated certainty was the most dangerous kind, because it collapsed under pressure in ways that genuine uncertainty did not.
"I come from a world that is not this one," she said. "I do not know the mechanism of the transition. I do not know if it was deliberate or accidental, caused by something in your world or something in mine, reversible or permanent. I know that the knowledge I carry — of psychology, of forensic science, of behavioral analysis — is from that world. I know that I woke up here, in this body, in this cell, with no memory of the crossing." She held his gaze. "That is everything I can truthfully tell you about the question of origin."
The scan processed. Returned neutral. He absorbed the answer with the same quality he had brought to the first — not warm, not cold, the pure functional attention of a person who was collecting data rather than performing a reaction to it.
"The third question," he said, and she felt the particular weight of a pause that preceded something significant. "Do you intend to stay?"
She was quiet.
Not from evasion — she had made a decision, four days ago, to give him the truth, and she was not revising that decision now. She was quiet because the question required something from her that she had been very carefully not requiring of herself: an honest accounting of what she actually wanted, as opposed to what she was planning to do.
She wanted to survive. That had been clear since the first moment of consciousness in this cell. She wanted to solve the case, because the case was the mechanism of her survival, and because there was a part of her that was constitutionally incapable of leaving a problem unsolved. She wanted to return to her own world, because her own world was hers — her work, her research, the life she had built in the ash of the betrayal, the forensic science department at a university that had eventually reinstated her, the small apartment with the annotated case files stacked on every horizontal surface.
She wanted those things.
She also, with a clarity that she had been refusing to examine since approximately the second day, wanted to know what happened next. Not just to the case. To the man across the table, who had spent four days having his most reliable instrument return results he could not explain, who had given her paper and time and partial hồ sơ access and had three times now failed to lock the door, who looked at her with the kind of attention that was usually reserved for things that were both dangerous and essential.
She did not examine that wanting. She filed it in the category of data that required more information before it could be properly weighted.
"I don't know," she said. "I want to survive the immediate situation. After that — I haven't allowed myself to plan that far. The case first. Everything after the case is a question I can't answer yet."
The silence that followed was long enough to be deliberate. Long enough to be a form of acknowledgment — not agreement, not approval, but the particular recognition of a person who has received an honest answer and is sitting with it.
His hands unfolded on the table. He straightened slightly.
"You will have supervised access," he said. "You will be assigned a kỵ sĩ escort at all times outside of this room and the mật thất. You will not initiate contact with any person in this fortress or outside of it without my explicit authorization. You will not access any materials not provided to you directly." He paused. "You will report everything you find to me before you act on it. Without exception."
"Understood," she said.
"If you violate any of these conditions —"
"I won't," she said.
He looked at her. "I know," he said — and the two words had, she noticed, a quality that was different from the same words used procedurally. Not a statement of policy. Something more like a statement of position.
He stood, and she stood with him, and they were for a moment both on their feet at the same time with the table between them and the violet light of the crystals making everything in the room look both colder and cleaner than it was.
"One more question," he said.
She waited.
"Your name." Not formal — not the register of the Arbiter conducting official inquiry. The register she was beginning to recognize as the one he used when he was asking something for himself rather than for the record. "Your actual name. Not the one in the hồ sơ."
She looked at him across the table.
"Irene," she said.
He did not repeat it. He did not comment on it, or note it, or produce any of the social acknowledgments that people typically produced when they received a piece of personal information they had asked for. He simply looked at her for a moment — both eyes present, the amber one doing something she did not quite have a name for yet, something she would need to observe more instances of before she could categorize it — and then he turned and went to the door.
She watched the line of his shoulders as he walked away. Watched the precise economy of the movement, the coat settling perfectly around it, the gloved hand reaching for the door handle.
He went through the door.
He did not lock it.
She stood in the room and thought about the word "Irene" in a room where someone had just asked for it and received it, and she thought about the amber eye doing the thing it had done when she said it, and she thought very carefully about the fact that she was thinking about these things at all.
Then she sat down and went back to work, because the case was still open and the deadline was still accumulating and the work, at least, she understood.
