The second body was found at dawn, and the snow had not stopped falling since.
Director Pell's messenger reached their temporary lodgings before the fourth morning bell, breathless and wet, with the particular urgency of someone who had run rather than ridden through the early storm because the streets had already become impassable for horses. Irene was dressed and ready before Gavin had finished reading the brief report, the Dossier already flickering at the edge of her vision with the preliminary case designation updating itself.
[NEW VICTIM: LADY SOPHIA RENWICK — POSITION: WIDOW, MINOR NOBILITY] [CONNECTION: GUEST LIST, CROWN PRINCE BANQUET — CONFIRMED] [SIGNATURE: CONSISTENT WITH PUPPET KILLER — BODY ARRANGEMENT NOTED]
The carriage ride to the Renwick estate took twice as long as it should have, the storm thickening the closer they drew to the river district, visibility narrowing to a few feet of swirling white beyond the windows. She watched Gavin's profile in the dim interior light, the particular stillness he held when calculating risk, and said nothing, because there was nothing useful to say until they had the evidence in front of them.
The estate's courtyard was already half-buried by the time they arrived, the snow accumulating with the violent speed of a storm that had decided, apparently, to make their work as difficult as possible. Director Pell met them at the entrance, his usual composure visibly strained by the conditions and the second body in as many weeks.
"The study again," he said. "Same arrangement. Same marker."
The drawing room where Lady Renwick had been found was colder than the rest of the house — a window left open, deliberately, Irene assessed immediately, allowing the storm to begin erasing whatever residual evidence the scene might have held. The body had been arranged in a high-backed chair facing the door, hands folded with deliberate care in her lap, a black feather placed precisely at the center of her chest.
She activated the Dossier immediately, working against the clock of the storm's continued degradation of the scene.
The extraction was thinner than she would have liked — the open window's cold air had compromised some of the residual data, and what she retrieved was fragmentary: a figure, the same indeterminate resolution as before, and this time something additional — a brief flash of a voice, distorted but present, the first auditory fragment the system had ever given her.
"She knew," she said, surfacing. "Lady Renwick knew. There was a conversation before the killing. Brief. I couldn't make out the words clearly, but the tone was — " She paused, processing the fragment more carefully. "Conciliatory. Almost gentle. Whoever did this wasn't threatening her. They were explaining something to her."
Gavin had positioned himself close enough that the proximity had become, by this point, simply the way they worked rather than something requiring conscious management. "Explaining what?"
"I don't know. The audio fragment is too degraded for content. But the emotional register is significant — this isn't an execution. This is closer to a confession, or an apology, delivered by the person performing the killing."
The wind howled against the open window, throwing a fresh sheet of snow across the room's threshold, and Director Pell's investigators moved to close it with the particular urgency of people who had finally registered that further delay would cost them everything still recoverable.
She stepped back from the body to allow them room to work, and the movement brought her directly into the path of the open window's gust — a blast of freezing air that struck her without warning, the temperature drop sharp enough to make her breath catch.
Gavin's coat was around her shoulders before she had fully processed the cold.
She had not seen him remove it. The motion had been quick, economical, the particular efficiency he brought to physical action when he had decided on it without deliberation — and now the heavy weight of his coat settled across her shoulders, still warm from his body, smelling faintly of leather and the cold-crisp scent of obsidian dust that seemed to follow him everywhere.
He did not comment on it. He had already turned back toward the body, his attention apparently returned fully to the case, as though the gesture had been so automatic it required no acknowledgment.
She stood very still for a moment, the warmth of the coat settling into skin that had gone cold faster than she'd registered, and she did not say anything either, because saying anything would require naming what had just happened, and naming it would require acknowledging the specific quality of care embedded in an action he had performed without apparently considering it an action at all.
The window closed. The storm's intrusion into the room ceased. The cold remained, in the walls, in the air, in the particular ache that had settled into her chest and had nothing, she suspected, to do with the temperature.
"The auditory fragment," Gavin said, his attention still on the body, his voice carefully level. "If the killer spoke to her — explained something — that suggests a personal connection. This isn't a random target selected for institutional symbolism. The killer knew Lady Renwick, or believed they had reason to address her directly before the killing."
"Yes," she said, drawing the coat slightly closer around herself, the warmth of it a constant reminder of the thirty seconds that had just passed between them and gone entirely unacknowledged. "Which means the connection between victims isn't purely the guest list. There's something more specific — a relationship, or a debt, or a grievance that ties the killer to each target individually."
"We need her personal correspondence," Gavin said. "Anything that might indicate a connection to Drell, or to the Church more broadly, beyond simple attendance at a banquet."
Director Pell moved to arrange it, and the room settled back into the rhythm of investigative work, and Irene stood in the cold drawing room wrapped in Gavin's coat and catalogued, with the same careful precision she brought to every piece of evidence, the particular weight of warmth that had nothing to do with wool and leather and everything to do with the man who had given it without asking, without commenting, without appearing to recognize the significance of the gesture at all.
She suspected he recognized it perfectly well.
She suspected that was exactly why he hadn't said anything.
