The Church inspector arrived three days later, unannounced and entirely within his institutional rights, with the particular bureaucratic smile of a man who enjoyed the exercise of authority more than its substance.
Father Aldous Bram presented his credentials to Director Pell's office with the formal precision of someone who had rehearsed the encounter, a sealed letter from the Pontiff's administrative council authorizing a review of "all consultative arrangements currently active in matters touching upon ecclesiastical interests, in light of recent irregularities in the Voss case proceedings."
Irene read the letter over Gavin's shoulder — close enough, by this point in their working relationship, that the proximity required no negotiation — and recognized immediately what it represented: not a genuine concern about irregularity, but a calculated pressure point, deployed precisely when the investigation into Drell had begun to threaten institutional interests.
"They know we're close to Drell," she said, once Bram had been escorted to a waiting room and the door closed behind him.
"Yes," Gavin said.
"This is meant to slow us down."
"This is meant to do considerably more than slow us down." He set the letter on the desk and looked at it with the particular stillness she had learned to recognize as his response to genuine institutional threat — not panic, never panic, but the focused calculation of a man assessing exactly how much ground he was about to lose. "A formal review of consultative arrangements means a review of your status. Your access. Whether the Voss consultancy continues to meet the standards required for ecclesiastical-adjacent investigations."
"Can they revoke it?"
"They can recommend revocation to the Imperial Court of Jurisdiction. The recommendation carries weight, particularly given Casimir's continued presence on that body." He was quiet for a moment, and she watched him arrive at a decision with the particular speed of a man who had already, in some sense, anticipated this exact situation and prepared for it. "I need to distance you from the investigation. Publicly. Today."
She felt something in her chest tighten, though she kept her expression entirely level. "Define distance."
"You will not be present for the interview with Bram. You will not be listed as active consultant on any documentation he reviews. For the duration of his audit — likely three to five days — you will work from the secondary records room, away from the primary investigation, and I will manage the Drell interview alone."
"You're cutting me out."
"I am protecting the consultancy," he said, and the precision in his voice did nothing to soften the words. "If Bram finds evidence that I have allowed personal — " He stopped. Started again, more carefully. "If he finds any evidence that the working relationship exceeds the bounds of the Gray-Eyed Restriction, the consultancy ends. Not delayed. Ended. And likely with consequences for you that go considerably beyond losing access to the investigation."
She understood the calculation. She understood it was sound, strategically necessary, the correct decision given the stakes involved. None of that understanding made the prospect of three to five days of enforced separation feel any less like a door closing on something she had not, until this exact moment, fully registered how much she had come to depend on.
"I understand the necessity," she said.
"That's not the same as agreeing with it," he said, and the observation was precise enough that she recognized, again, how thoroughly he had learned to read her in the weeks since the vault.
"No," she admitted. "It isn't."
He held her gaze for a long moment, and she watched the cost of the decision register on his face — not regret, exactly, but the particular weight of a man choosing the necessary action over the preferred one, and feeling the difference between those two things acutely.
"It's three days," he said. "Possibly five. The case will continue. I'll bring you everything Bram doesn't see."
"And if he asks you directly whether the relationship has exceeded professional bounds?"
The question hung in the cold office air, and she watched him consider it with the full seriousness it deserved — not deflecting, not minimizing, genuinely weighing the answer he intended to give.
"I will tell him the truth," he said. "That the Consultant has provided invaluable investigative service, has been treated with the formal courtesy required by her position, and that no action has occurred that violates the letter of the Restriction."
She noted the precision of the phrasing. "The letter of the Restriction."
"Yes," he said, and did not elaborate further, and she understood, in the particular silence that followed, that he had chosen his words with exactly the care she would have chosen them herself — true in every particular, and carefully constructed to avoid examining what the spirit of the Restriction might say about the eleven days that had brought them here.
She gathered her materials. "The secondary records room."
"Yes."
"For three to five days."
"Yes," he said again, and then, quieter, in the register she had learned belonged to him alone, separate from the formal precision of his official voice: "I am sorry for the necessity of this."
She looked at him — really looked, the way she had learned to look at him over the weeks of accumulated proximity, cataloguing the genuine regret beneath the controlled surface.
"Don't apologize for protecting both of us," she said. "Just don't let him win anything he hasn't actually earned."
Something in his expression shifted toward something that was not quite a smile but occupied its careful neighboring territory. "I have no intention of that."
She left for the secondary records room with her materials gathered and her composure intact, and she did not allow herself to examine, until she was alone in the small cold space Director Pell had allocated her, exactly how much the prospect of three to five days without him had cost to accept with apparent equanimity.
