Bram's audit extended into its second day before he requested, with the particular casual cruelty of someone who knew exactly what he was doing, a direct interview with the Consultant herself.
Gavin informed her of the request in the secondary records room, his expression carefully neutral in the way she had learned meant he was managing something significant beneath the surface. "He wants to speak with you directly. I can refuse on procedural grounds, but refusal itself may read as evidence of something to hide."
"I'll speak with him," she said.
The interview took place in the formal meeting room Director Pell had reserved for the audit, Bram seated behind a borrowed desk with the particular self-satisfaction of a man who believed he was about to extract something useful, Gavin standing at the room's periphery with the formal distance the situation demanded — present as her supervising Arbiter, nothing more, the proximity that had become natural between them now deliberately, painfully absent.
"Consultant Voss," Bram began, the title delivered with a faint emphasis that suggested he found it slightly absurd. "I understand you've been granted unusually broad access for someone whose identity remains, shall we say, contested."
"My access has been determined by the Grand Arbiter in accordance with his jurisdiction," she said. "I'd be happy to discuss the specific investigative value I've provided, if that's useful to your review."
"I'm more interested in the nature of the arrangement itself." Bram's smile widened fractionally. "Eleven days in close proximity with the empire's most rigorously disciplined Arbiter. One imagines such close working conditions might produce — complications."
She felt the question land precisely where it was intended to land, and she registered, in the same breath, exactly how she wanted to respond to it: not with denial, which would sound defensive, but with the precise analytical dismantling of the question's actual purpose.
"You're not actually interested in whether complications have arisen," she said. "You're interested in whether you can manufacture the appearance of complications sufficient to justify the recommendation your Pontiff has already decided he wants. The timing of this audit — three days after the investigation identified Father Drell as a person of interest — is not coincidental. This isn't oversight. This is obstruction, dressed in the language of institutional concern."
Bram's smile faltered, fractionally, and she pressed forward into the opening.
"You came here hoping to find evidence of impropriety because impropriety would discredit the investigation regardless of its merits. That's a sound strategy if the goal is protecting Drell rather than determining the truth of what happened to Crown Prince Aldric and two subsequent victims. I'd ask you to consider what it says about your own confidence in Drell's innocence that disrupting this investigation has become a higher priority than allowing it to conclude."
The silence that followed had a different quality than any she had produced in the room before — not the controlled stillness of professional disagreement, but something closer to a held breath, the air itself registering the weight of what she had just said directly to a representative of the institution that held her life in its formal jurisdiction.
Gavin had gone perfectly still at the room's periphery.
She was aware of his stillness without looking at him directly — the particular quality of it, the absolute absence of movement that she had learned, across eleven days, indicated not paralysis but its precise opposite: a man holding himself in check with everything he had, because the alternative was an intervention that would prove exactly the impropriety Bram was hunting for.
Bram recovered his composure with visible effort. "That's a remarkably aggressive response to a routine inquiry."
"It's an accurate response to a manufactured one," she said. "You're welcome to ask me direct questions about my conduct, my access, or my investigative findings. I'll answer all of them honestly. What I won't do is pretend that this audit is anything other than what it transparently is."
Bram gathered his papers with the particular brisk efficiency of a man choosing to end an encounter that had not gone the direction he intended. "I'll be reviewing the formal documentation further. This office will receive my findings within the week."
He left without further comment.
The room held its silence for a long moment after the door closed, and Irene became aware, with the particular acute attention she reserved for him alone, of Gavin slowly releasing the stillness he had maintained throughout the encounter — his shoulders dropping fractionally, the controlled tension in his jaw easing by degrees.
He had not intervened. He had stood at the room's periphery and let her absorb the full force of Bram's manufactured accusation, let her dismantle it herself, because intervention would have proven the very thing the audit was designed to find.
She understood the necessity. She understood, watching him now, exactly what that restraint had cost him.
"You didn't move," she said, once they were alone.
"I couldn't," he said, the simplicity of the statement carrying more weight than any elaboration could have. "Anything I did would have given him what he came for."
"I know."
"That doesn't mean it cost nothing," he said, and the admission arrived with the same rawness she had glimpsed once before, in the cold office after Bram's letter first arrived — the careful professional surface cracking just enough to show what sat beneath it.
She looked at him, and she understood, with a clarity she had been carefully avoiding for days, exactly how much restraint had become the defining feature of whatever existed between them — not absence of feeling, but its precise opposite, contained with a discipline that was beginning, she suspected, to cost both of them considerably more than either was willing to acknowledge directly.
"Three more days," she said, returning them both to the practical ground that felt, in that moment, considerably safer than the alternative.
"Possibly five," he said, and they left it there, because there was nowhere else, yet, that either of them was prepared to take it.
