She retreated into formality the following morning, deliberately and with full awareness of what she was doing.
The decision had crystallized overnight, in the cold isolation of the secondary records room, turning over the events of the Bram interview with the same analytical rigor she applied to every piece of evidence. The conclusion was uncomfortable but clear: whatever existed between herself and Gavin had become visible enough that a hostile observer had identified it within minutes of looking. If she could not control the feeling itself, she could control its expression, and controlling its expression meant returning to the precise, distant register she had abandoned somewhere in the accumulated days of shared proximity.
It was, she recognized, a form of the same defensive pattern she had used against the world for years before any of this began. Profile the threat. Withdraw to a controlled distance. Survive.
Gavin arrived at the records room at the usual hour, and she met him with a formality so complete it functioned as its own kind of weapon.
"Grand Arbiter," she said, rising from her chair with the precise courtesy she had used in the earliest days of their working relationship, before any of what had accumulated since. "I have the Renwick correspondence analysis prepared for your review."
She watched something shift in his expression — surprise, quickly contained, followed by a recalibration she could see him performing in real time.
"Irene," he said, and the use of her actual name, after the formal address she had just deployed, landed with a deliberateness that registered as correction.
"The analysis," she said, not acknowledging the correction, sliding the prepared documents across the table with the careful, distant efficiency of pure professional transaction. "Three letters between Lady Renwick and an unidentified correspondent, dated within the month preceding her death. The handwriting doesn't match any sample I've cross-referenced against the Church administrative records, but the content suggests significant financial distress and a debt of an unspecified nature."
He took the documents, his attention moving between the papers and her face with the particular intensity she had learned to associate with him processing more than one thing simultaneously.
"You're using my title," he said.
"It's the correct form of address for the Grand Arbiter of the Valerand Empire," she said, the words delivered with the flat precision of Register One, the register she had used in the earliest interrogation sessions, the register that communicated nothing beyond its literal content.
"You haven't used it in days."
"I should have continued to use it," she said. "The lapse was a procedural inconsistency I should correct, particularly given the scrutiny we're currently under."
He set the documents down without reviewing them further, his full attention now entirely on her, both eyes present in the way she had learned meant the scan had engaged at significant intensity.
"This is not about procedural consistency," he said.
"I disagree," she said. "Given Father Bram's interview yesterday, I think it's precisely about procedural consistency. We were careless. The carelessness was noticed by a hostile observer. The correction is necessary regardless of what either of us might prefer."
The silence that followed had the particular quality of a held breath, and she watched him absorb the strategy beneath her words — not simply withdrawal, but a calculated retreat designed to remove every point of vulnerability Bram or anyone like him might exploit going forward.
"You're protecting both of us," he said.
"I'm correcting an error," she said, and did not soften the words.
He was quiet for a long moment, and she watched something settle in his expression — not quite acceptance, but the particular controlled stillness of a man recognizing he could not argue against a strategy that was, by its own logic, entirely sound.
"Very well," he said finally. "Grand Arbiter and Consultant. Formal protocols, fully observed."
"Yes," she said.
He gathered the Renwick documents and turned toward the door, and she watched him go with the particular ache of having achieved exactly what she intended and discovering that achieving it solved nothing about what she actually felt.
For the remainder of the audit period, she maintained the distance with a discipline that cost her considerably more energy than the investigation itself. She addressed him formally in every interaction. She kept her hands folded in front of her, the particular posture-lock composure she had cultivated as Vivian Voss, deployed now not for the court or for hostile witnesses but for the one person who had, somewhere in eleven accumulated days, become the singular exception to every defense she had built.
She noticed, on the third day, that her fingers had begun, unconsciously, twisting the fabric of her sleeve during the moments when his attention rested on her longest — the particular tell she had not deployed since the earliest days in the vault, the small physical evidence of a composure maintained at genuine cost.
She did not stop the habit. She simply ensured the sleeve hid it well enough that he would have to look very closely to see.
He looked closely.
She knew this because, on the fourth day, when Director Pell's office finally received word that Bram's audit had concluded without formal findings against the consultancy, Gavin came to the records room at the end of the working day and stood for a long moment in the doorway before speaking.
"The audit is closed," he said. "No findings."
"That's good news," she said, in the same careful formal register she had maintained for four days.
"Irene," he said, and this time the use of her name carried something heavier than correction — something closer to a request.
She looked at him.
"The fabric of your sleeve," he said. "You've worn it nearly through at the cuff."
She looked down. He was right — the careful twisting, four days of unconscious tension, had thinned the fabric to the point of visible wear.
She did not have an answer for that observation that maintained the distance she had so carefully built, and she stood in the silence of the records room with the evidence of her own discomfort visible on her wrist, and understood that whatever protection she had constructed over the past four days, it had never once fooled the one person it was meant to fool.
