He did not say anything further about the sleeve.
She had expected him to — had braced, in the silence that followed his observation, for some continuation of the moment, some attempt to name what the worn fabric represented. He did not. He looked at it for a long moment, his expression doing the complicated work of acknowledging what he had seen without demanding she account for it, and then he turned and left the records room, and the door closed behind him with a quiet, deliberate click.
She stood alone in the cold space for several minutes afterward, looking at the thinned fabric at her wrist, and felt something in her chest that she did not have adequate vocabulary for — relief, mixed with something closer to disappointment, the particular ache of a door left open rather than either closed or walked through.
The following morning, a document arrived with the seal of the Grand Arbiter's office.
She broke the seal with the same careful habit she always used, and read the contents twice before she fully understood what she was holding: an expanded investigative warrant, granting the Consultant — named, this time, with full formal title rather than reduced to procedural anonymity — authority to access ecclesiastical financial records pertaining to any individual under active investigation, effective immediately, valid for the duration of the Renwick-Fenwick inquiry.
This was beyond what she had requested. Beyond, even, what she had thought to ask for.
She brought the document to the mật thất Director Pell had assigned them for the resumed investigation, and found Gavin already at the main desk, his attention on a separate set of papers, his posture giving away nothing about whether he expected her reaction to the warrant.
"This exceeds the scope of my previous access," she said.
"Yes."
"Considerably."
"The investigation requires it," he said, without looking up. "Drell's financial records will likely show the same procurement pattern we identified with Vyne — a gap in standard transactions, followed by an unusual acquisition. The warrant allows us to pursue that pattern without waiting for additional procedural authorization at every step."
She set the document on the table between them. "You didn't discuss this with me before submitting it."
"No."
"Why not?"
He looked up then, and she saw, in the particular quality of his expression, the answer he was not going to give her directly — that the warrant had been his way of communicating something the four days of formal distance had made impossible to say through any other channel. An action, where words had become too dangerous to risk.
"Because the investigation needed it," he said, "and I did not require your input to determine that it did."
She held his gaze, understanding the deflection for exactly what it was, and chose, in that moment, not to press it further. The warrant was real. The investigative value was real. Whatever additional meaning he had folded into the gesture, she was not yet ready to ask him to name it, and he was clearly not yet ready to offer the naming voluntarily.
"Thank you," she said instead, and watched something in his shoulders ease at the simplicity of the response — relief, she suspected, that she had chosen the practical acknowledgment over the more complicated conversation that lurked beneath it.
They worked through the morning with the warrant's new access, the financial records arriving from the Church's reluctant administrators with the particular slowness of an institution complying with a legal requirement it deeply resented. By midday, the pattern she had predicted had emerged: an eighteen-month gap in Drell's documented pharmaceutical-adjacent expenditures, followed by a sudden resumption coinciding almost exactly with the timeline of the Crown Prince's death.
"This is the same architecture as Vyne," she said, laying the financial timeline beside the earlier case's documentation. "A gap, then a new pattern. Either Drell and Vyne are coordinating through a shared source, or the Church has a standard procedure for acquiring restricted materials that both men accessed independently through the same institutional channel."
"The second seems more likely," Gavin said. "Drell and Vyne have no documented personal connection beyond their mutual presence at Church-affiliated events. If they're both drawing from the same institutional supply, that suggests a centralized acquisition system rather than individual conspiracy."
"Which means there's a quartermaster somewhere in the Church hierarchy managing the distribution of materials used for at least two murders."
"Yes," he said. "And finding that person gives us the architecture of the entire operation, rather than one operative at a time."
She felt the particular satisfaction of a case accelerating toward clarity, the pieces beginning to interlock with the momentum that always preceded a breakthrough, and she allowed herself, briefly, to set aside the unresolved tension of the morning's exchange in favor of the work itself.
It was Gavin who returned to it, hours later, as the afternoon light thinned toward evening and Director Pell's clerks had departed for the day, leaving the two of them alone in the mật thất with the accumulated documents of a case approaching its center.
"The warrant," he said, not looking up from his notes.
"Yes."
"I want you to understand why I didn't discuss it with you first."
She set down her own pen. "I'm listening."
"After the audit — after watching you retreat into formal distance, for entirely sound reasons — I found I had no adequate way to tell you that the distance, while necessary, had cost me something I was not prepared to simply absorb in silence." He looked up, and his expression carried a rawness she had seen only twice before, both times in moments of significant personal exposure. "I could not say that directly. The Restriction makes direct statement dangerous for both of us, particularly with the audit's findings still pending review. So I did the only thing within my authority that could communicate the same thing without violating the letter of what we're bound by."
She absorbed this slowly, the full weight of what he was describing settling into place alongside everything she had already catalogued about him — the careful precision, the discipline, the particular way he had learned, across the accumulated weeks, to express what he could not say through what he could legitimately do.
"You gave me access because you couldn't give me anything else," she said.
"Yes," he said, simply.
She looked at the warrant, still sitting on the table between them, and understood it now not merely as an investigative tool but as the precise shape of everything neither of them had yet found a way to say directly, folded into the only language the Gray-Eyed Restriction still permitted them.
"Thank you," she said again, and this time the words carried considerably more weight than the practical acknowledgment she had offered that morning, and she watched him receive them with the particular stillness of a man who understood, finally, that the message had landed exactly as intended.
