He came back in the morning with a chair.
Not one chair — two, and a narrow table between them, carried by a pair of kỵ sĩ who did not look at her and set up the furniture with the efficiency of people who had performed this particular task many times before. The table was bare. The chairs were plain, functional, the wood worn smooth at the armrests in a way that suggested long use. Someone had sat in these chairs a great many times, across from a great many people, extracting a great many things.
Gavin followed them in.
He was dressed identically to the night before — or, she considered, he might simply always dress this way, the same coat, the same gloves, the same collar, a uniform that was not a uniform only because it was too precisely individual to be institutional. He carried a leather case, flat and worn at the corners, of the kind used for documents rather than weapons. He sat down in one of the chairs and set the case on the table and opened it without looking at her.
"Sit," he said.
She sat.
He withdrew a sheaf of papers and aligned the edges against the table with a gesture so automatic it had clearly been performed ten thousand times. Then he uncapped a pen — a proper one, she noted, with a nib rather than a quill, the barrel made of some dark metal that caught the violet crystal light — and positioned it over the topmost page.
He still had not looked at her.
She understood the technique. She had used it herself in interview rooms — the deliberate withholding of eye contact in the opening stages, establishing the asymmetry of attention, making the subject feel that they were being processed rather than engaged. It was effective. It created a particular kind of pressure that most people responded to by trying to fill the silence, to make themselves more present, to demand the attention they were being denied.
She sat with her hands folded in her lap and waited.
"Name," he said.
"Vivian Voss. Fourth of that name, daughter of Duke Aldric Voss of the Southern Reaches, heir to House Voss."
The pen moved. "Age."
"Twenty-three."
"Length of residence in the capital."
"Six months, commencing at the autumn equinox."
"Purpose of residence."
"Social season. My father wished me to be presented at court."
Still no eye contact. The pen continued its precise movement across the page — she could not see what he was writing from this angle, but the strokes had the quality of someone who wrote quickly and clearly, someone whose hand kept pace with their thinking rather than lagging behind it.
"Relationship to Crown Prince Aldric Valerand."
"Formal acquaintance. We had been introduced on three occasions prior to the evening of the banquet."
"Were those introductions initiated by you or by a third party?"
She paused — just a fraction of a second, the kind of pause that came not from uncertainty but from recognizing a question that was more interesting than it appeared on its surface. "Third party. The Crown Prince's social secretary managed all introductions during the season."
"And did those three introductions result in any correspondence, private meeting, or arrangement of any kind?"
"No."
The pen stopped.
He looked up.
The full weight of those mismatched eyes landing on her was — she noted this with the detached precision she applied to all observations about her own physiological responses — not nothing. The amber one had a warmth to it that was purely aesthetic, a quality of light rather than of feeling, but the effect it produced in combination with the cold blue was a particular kind of attention that was very difficult to be neutral about. She had been looked at carefully by many people in the course of her career. This was different in a way she would need to examine later.
The blue eye brightened.
He was scanning her, she knew. Running his instrument across whatever she had just said and looking for the fracture lines, the places where truth became performance. She held his gaze and felt the scrutiny of it and did not move.
"No correspondence," he repeated.
"No."
"No private meetings."
"No."
"No arrangement — no understanding, no agreement, no promise of any kind."
"No."
The blue eye did what she had begun to recognize as its confirmation behavior — a settling, a slight dimming, as though the active scan had concluded and the instrument had returned to standby. He had looked for the lie and not found it, and she could see in the precise line of his expression the particular quality of a man who was not accustomed to not finding it.
"Then you had no motive," he said.
"I had no motive," she agreed. "Which is information you had access to before I arrived. The question is why that information was not weighted appropriately in the initial assessment."
The pen went down.
"You are not here to conduct the investigation."
"I am here because I am the only person in this room who understands why the investigation as currently constituted will not produce the correct result."
Silence.
It was a different kind of silence than the ones she had been collecting since she arrived — not processing, not assessing, not the particular charged quiet of a man whose instrument had failed him. This one had an edge to it, a quality she identified after a moment as the silence of someone who was angry in a manner so controlled it had become indistinguishable from calm.
She had pushed, she noted. Filed it. She could afford to push, but she needed to understand the calibration.
"Why did you refuse wine at the banquet?"
She went still.
Not visibly — she was too trained for it to be visible, but internally, her processing redirected with sudden force. That question was not in the formal reports she had accessed through the Dossier. She had read the evidence summary three times over the course of the night. That question was not there.
"Where did that information come from?" she said.
He looked at her with an expression that did not change. "Answer the question."
"I will answer the question," she said, with the same precision she brought to everything, "as soon as you tell me who provided that detail. It is not in the official case record. Which means it came from a secondary source. Which means someone outside the formal investigation has been providing you with supplementary information about my behavior at the banquet."
The amber eye did something then — a shift she had not seen before, a quality she could not immediately categorize. Not surprise. Not irritation. Something more layered than either.
"The sources of this investigation are not your concern."
"They are absolutely my concern," she said, keeping her voice level, "because if someone outside the formal record is feeding information to the Arbiter assigned to my case, that someone has a vested interest in how this investigation concludes. And their interest is not in the truth."
He closed the leather case.
The gesture was controlled — not abrupt, not demonstrative, but conclusive. She read it as a form of withdrawal, a managed retreat from a line of questioning that had become inconvenient. She had seen the same gesture from prosecutors who realized mid-deposition that the witness was better prepared than they were.
"This session is concluded," he said.
"I have not answered your question."
"You have answered it sufficiently."
He stood. The kỵ sĩ, who had been standing at parade rest near the door, moved in unison to collect the table and chairs. Gavin was already at the door, the leather case under his arm, when she spoke.
"The source," she said. "Whatever they told you about my behavior — consider whether they were there to observe or there to be observed. Those are different things. People who are there to observe remember what happened. People who are there to be observed remember what they wanted to happen."
He paused.
His back was to her. His shoulders were very precisely still — the particular stillness of a person who was deciding whether to respond and had not yet decided.
"Where did you learn the law?" he said.
It was not what she had expected. She considered the question and its implications — the implicit acknowledgment that she had engaged with the framework of evidence and testimony in a way that was fluent rather than merely desperate, the curiosity that had produced the question despite himself.
"I have never studied law," she said.
He was quiet for a moment. Then: "What have you studied?"
She looked at the line of his shoulders, the precise geometry of his posture, the way the light from the corridor beyond caught the edge of his coat and made him look for a moment like an illustration of the concept of authority rather than a person who happened to exercise it.
"People," she said. "I have spent my life studying people."
He did not answer.
He left.
But she noticed — she always noticed — that his right shoulder turned, just fractionally, just for a second, back toward her, before he corrected it and walked through the door.
The lock engaged.
The Dossier updated:
[SECONDARY SOURCE IDENTIFIED: UNKNOWN — INVESTIGATION PENDING] [IMPLICATION: INFORMATION PIPELINE TO ARBITER OUTSIDE FORMAL RECORD] [CASE PROGRESS: 18%]
Irene sat in the empty cell and built a profile of the unknown source, and thought about a man who had spent twenty years finding every lie and had just spent twenty minutes not finding hers, and wondered what that was costing him.
