He did not sleep.
This was not unusual — Gavin Blackthorn had not slept through a full night in approximately eleven years, a fact he had long since stopped cataloguing as a problem and filed instead as a characteristic of the work. The work did not stop at the second bell. The work did not pause for the body's preferences. The work was what remained when everything else had been stripped away, and he had learned to be grateful for it.
Tonight, however, the work was not cooperating.
He sat at the desk in the mật thất and spread the hồ sơ of Vivian Voss across its surface for the twenty-first time and looked at it with the same systematic attention he brought to every case and arrived, with the same systematic frustration, at the same result.
His eyes had found nothing.
This was — he turned the fact over in his mind with the precision he applied to all uncomfortable facts — not possible in any ordinary sense. In twenty years of using the gift of the Blackthorn line, he had encountered three categories of person: those who lied and whose lies were visible to him as clearly as text on a page; those who believed their own falsehoods so completely that they scanned as truth; and those who were, in whatever specific and limited domain he was examining, actually telling the truth.
Vivian Voss fell into none of those categories.
She told the truth. He could confirm that — every word he had scanned in their two sessions had registered as genuine. But the truth she told was not the truth he expected, and the gap between those two things was significant enough that he had spent the last six hours trying to close it.
He looked at the handwriting sample in the official hồ sơ — a letter Vivian Voss had written to her father three months prior, requesting an extension of her season. The script was everything he would expect from her background: flourished capitals, elongated descenders, the decorative loops of someone who had been trained in the aesthetics of correspondence rather than its function. Beautiful, in the way that things designed to be beautiful rather than useful were beautiful.
Then he looked at the page she had asked for last night — the one she had covered in her preliminary reconstruction of the toxicological timeline, filled edge to edge with her working, the kind of shorthand that a person used when they were recording thinking rather than communicating it. No loops. No flourishes. Vertical, precise strokes that moved horizontally across the page with the momentum of an instrument, not a hand.
Two different people's relationship to the act of writing.
He placed the two pages side by side and looked at them for a long time.
Then he called for his trưởng kỵ sĩ.
The report arrived within the hour — a thorough summary of Vivian Voss's observed behavior in the forty-eight hours preceding her arrest, compiled from the accounts of six members of the household staff who had been present at the banquet and its preparation. He read it with the same attention he gave everything and found it entirely consistent with the file he had already built: a young noblewoman of considerable social ambition and considerable social difficulty, given to sharp remarks and sharper opinions, prone to the kind of conflict that came from believing one's own intelligence exceeded one's circumstances.
Nothing in it explained the woman in the cell below him.
He stood, put on his coat, and went downstairs without telling anyone he was going.
The vault corridor was empty at this hour. His own boots on the stone were the loudest thing in it, and he moved with the deliberate quiet of long practice, though there was no one to hear him. Habit. The kind of thing you did for so long it stopped requiring intention.
He reached the door of her cell and found the observation slot at eye height and looked through it before he opened it.
She was sitting in the center of the cell, cross-legged on the floor, and her eyes were doing the thing.
He had seen it twice now — the third time, from this angle, it was more legible. The way her gaze fixed on a point approximately eight inches in front of her face and then seemed to lose its connection to the room, her pupils slightly dilated, the rate of her blinking dropping to something close to zero. It was not the unfocused look of someone dissociating from distress. It was the look of someone watching something that was not visible from outside.
Her right hand moved through the air in a low, precise arc. Stopped. Drew a line. Stopped. He could see the pattern of it — rectangular, methodical, the gesture of someone organizing a surface that existed only in their perception.
He watched her for longer than he intended to.
Then he opened the door.
She did not react immediately — the return from whatever state she had been in took approximately two seconds, a blink and a breath and a reorientation that was swift but not instantaneous. She looked at him. He had not announced himself. He had not made noise. And she was looking at him not with the startle of someone interrupted but with the steady attention of someone who had registered his presence and was now processing its implications.
"You came without the kỵ sĩ," she said.
"I did."
"Is that standard procedure?"
"No."
She said nothing to that. He moved into the room and felt the eyes of his Blackthorn gift engage — the right eye running its passive scan across the space, reading the ambient magic signature of the environment, cataloguing anything that should not be there. The crystals in the wall. The trace residue of standard vault sealing on the door. Nothing else.
He let the scan extend to her.
And then he let it extend further, pushed it past passive and into active, the way he did in formal interrogation when he needed to be certain — felt the familiar sensation of his right pupil contracting and expanding as the obsidian-derived gift engaged fully, the slight pressure behind his eye that meant the instrument was running at maximum sensitivity.
She noticed.
Of course she noticed. He could see it in the quality of her attention — a sharpening, a focus, the particular alertness of someone who had identified a mechanism and was now examining it. Not fear. Assessment.
"You are scanning me," she said.
"Yes."
"And?"
He looked at her through the full capability of an ability that had never, in twenty years, failed to find something — some hairline fracture in a performance, some misalignment between word and intention, some trace of a lie even in people who had constructed their deceptions so completely they had forgotten the truth themselves.
He found nothing.
Not the nothing of a limited scan or an unfocused one. The nothing of a complete pass across every available surface, every word she had spoken in his presence, every gesture and expression and micro-movement — and the absence of any marker that his gift had been trained over two decades to recognize.
The nothing of a person telling the complete truth.
Except that the truth she was telling included standing in a cell in his prison in the body of a woman whose handwriting did not match hers and whose conversational register belonged to someone from a world he did not have a name for, and none of that was visible as deception because — and here was the thing that had kept him from sleep — it was not deception. Whatever she was, whatever was happening, it was not a lie.
He did not know what to do with that.
"You are not finding anything," she said.
"I am not finding anything," he confirmed.
"Does that happen often?"
The question was direct. The quality of it — the lack of social padding, the absence of any of the performative deference that most people deployed when speaking to him, the simple functional inquiry of someone who wanted information rather than approval — was something he had been registering since the first moment she opened her mouth.
"It does not happen," he said.
She looked at him for a moment. Something moved in her expression — not triumph, not satisfaction. Something more considered than either.
"Then perhaps," she said, "you are asking the wrong questions."
He stood in the center of the cell with his gift still running and looked at her and for the first time in a very long time found himself in a position he did not know how to categorize.
He was not in danger. She was not threatening him. She was not deceiving him. She was sitting on the cold floor of his prison and telling him, with absolute factual accuracy, that his instrument — the thing he had built his entire career on, the thing that had survived the betrayal of his lieutenant and the death of his mother and the stripping of his birthright — was not functioning as it should.
Except that it was.
That was the thing. That was the thing he could not close.
It was functioning perfectly. It was returning accurate results. The results simply did not fit the world as he understood it, which meant that either the world was wrong or his understanding of it was, and in his experience it was almost always the understanding.
"I have never not found anything," he said.
She had turned back to the diagram she had been working on — the rectangular framework visible only to her, her right hand moving with that particular deliberate precision. She did not look up when she answered.
"Then," she said, "you have perhaps never met anyone who had nothing to hide in the way you were looking for it."
He was quiet for a long time.
The crystals pulsed their cold violet light. Somewhere far above, in the upper floors of the fortress, a mechanism turned over — the regulated operation of the heating system, the bass note of stone and engineering that was the constant background of this place.
"What is that?" he said. The gesture — the rectangular movement through the air.
She paused. Looked at her own hand. "A method of organizing information," she said. "Mapping relationships between data points. I have always thought better when I can see the connections spatially."
"There is nothing there."
"There is nothing there that you can see," she said.
He did not pursue it. He turned toward the door, and was reaching for the handle, and was almost through the opening before the thing he had been turning over since he came down the stairs found its way out of him.
"The toxicological timeline you constructed last night," he said, without turning around. "Where did you learn to do that?"
A pause.
"I read widely," she said.
He did not ask a follow-up question. He closed the door and locked it and stood in the corridor for a moment in the dark, listening to the silence on the other side of it.
Then he went back upstairs and sat in front of the open hồ sơ and wrote three words on a blank page.
*She is not lying.*
He looked at them for a long time.
Then he wrote three more.
*She is not her.*
He put the pen down and sat with the two statements and the gap between them, which was the size of everything he did not yet understand, and he thought about a woman who mapped invisible information on the air with her fingertips and reconstructed crime scenes in her mind and looked at his best interrogation technique with the interest of a colleague evaluating a method.
The third bell sounded somewhere in the distance, deep and resonant and indifferent to his problems.
He was no closer to sleep than he had been at the first.
