On the third morning, he brought paper.
Not a single sheet — a full stack of it, good quality, the kind with a slight texture that held ink without bleeding. And two pens, and an inkwell, and a small flat board to write on. The kỵ sĩ set it on the table without being asked. Gavin settled into his chair, crossed one knee over the other, and watched her look at the paper the way he watched everyone look at the things he gave them — because what a person did in the first second of receiving something told you more than what they said in the first minute of speaking.
She did not reach for it immediately.
She looked at it, with that particular quality of attention that he was cataloguing into something that was beginning to feel like a category specific to her — not wariness, not calculation, but the practical assessment of a tool in relation to the task at hand. Then she picked up a pen, tested the nib against her thumbnail, and set the board across her knees.
"You have one hour," he said.
"I know," she said, and began.
He had expected her to start with herself.
That was what people did — what people in her position invariably did — they built their defense from the inside out, starting with their own innocence and working toward the evidence, constructing an argument for why the framework that had condemned them was wrong. He had heard a thousand iterations of it. He knew its rhythms.
She started with the killer.
"The person who poisoned Crown Prince Aldric," she said, not looking up from the page where her pen was already moving, "has a pattern of behavior consistent with obsessive-compulsive organization. This is not a diagnosis — it is an observation about method. The way the poison was introduced, the timing of it, the precision of the dosage — these are not the marks of someone acting on impulse or opportunity. They indicate a person who cannot tolerate disorder. Who plans in detail. Who rehearses."
He said nothing. She continued.
"People who operate this way leave traces that are different from other kinds of perpetrators. They are not messier — they are more consistent. Their signature is the pattern itself." She paused, made a notation. "At every crime scene associated with this person — and I believe there is more than one, though the others may not have been identified as related — you will find evidence of excessive preparation. Multiple redundancies. A primary method and at least one contingency. The kind of planning that accounts for things going wrong."
"You have access to one crime scene," he said. "The one you are accused of."
"I have access to the evidence summary from that scene," she corrected, still writing. "Which is enough to confirm the pattern. The goblet was handled, set down, and the poison introduced in a single interaction — I know this because the degradation pattern on the compound shows no secondary contact. One touch, one introduction, precise amount. That level of control is not accidental."
He was aware, with some portion of his attention, that he was leaning forward.
He was not aware, until he registered the awareness, of precisely when he had begun doing it. He corrected the angle of his posture by approximately three degrees and relocated his attention to the middle distance.
"The social profile," she continued, "is consistent with someone who moves easily in environments with formal hierarchy. Someone whose presence at high-access events does not create friction. Not a stranger to the household — a regular. Someone whose attendance at the banquet would not have been noted as unusual."
"That description fits a significant portion of the guest list."
"It does. Which is why the behavioral profile narrows it." She looked up for the first time. "I need you to answer a question."
"Ask it."
"The witness — Lady Maren Ashveil. Was her testimony given immediately after the death, or was there a delay?"
He considered whether to answer. The consideration lasted less than three seconds. "There was a delay of approximately eighteen hours."
Something registered in her expression — not triumph, but confirmation. The look of a person whose working hypothesis had just received support. "Eighteen hours is enough time to construct a narrative. Not a lie from nothing — a reframing of something actually witnessed. The most durable false testimony is built on a real event, recontextualized." She set down the pen. "She may have seen someone approach the goblet. She may have been told, in the eighteen-hour window, that the someone she saw was me."
The silence had a quality he was beginning to recognize — it was the silence of a room in which a significant amount of thinking was occurring, most of it his.
"That requires coordination," he said.
"Yes."
"Between whoever committed the murder and whoever managed the witness."
"Yes."
"And a third party, potentially, who introduced the two."
"Or one person with sufficient access to have done all of it themselves." She picked up the pen again. "The coordination is not the interesting part. The interesting part is the resources. This person has reach into the formal investigation — we established that yesterday. They have access to household staff at the highest level. They have knowledge of imperial-grade poison compounds. These are not the resources of a private citizen acting alone."
He was quiet.
She continued writing. He watched her hand move across the page — that same clean, vertical, precise script that had nothing to do with the flourished letter to her father, and thought about the two handwriting samples and the gap between them that he still could not close.
"You cannot prove any of this," he said.
"Not yet." She did not look up. "I can prove the timeline inconsistency with the witness testimony. I can prove the pharmacological impossibility of the dosage having been introduced at the stated time by someone in custody from the stated hour. I cannot yet prove the coordination or the identity of the person with the resources." A pause. "That requires access I do not currently have."
"You are in a prison cell."
"I am aware." Now she looked up. The dark eyes met his with an directness that he had been cataloguing and still had not fully accounted for — the absence of any of the social management that most people deployed when speaking to him, no deference, no appeal, just the straight functional attention of someone treating him as an interlocutor rather than an authority. "The situation is as follows: I have a framework for the investigation that your current investigative team does not have, because they are looking at this as a matter of motive and opportunity, and the correct frame is behavioral signature and resource analysis. I cannot operate that framework from inside this cell. You can execute the investigation using my framework as a guide, but you will miss things I would not miss because I will not be there to see them."
She held his gaze.
"You can execute me and lose the framework entirely. Or you can give me supervised access to the investigation and find out whether the framework produces results."
The hour was not up. He knew it without checking — he had been tracking the time with the part of his mind that always tracked time, and they were perhaps forty-two minutes in. She had used forty-two minutes to construct an argument that was more rigorous than anything his formal investigative team had produced in three days.
He stood.
The motion was controlled, the chair barely moving, his coat settling back into its lines without effort. He picked up the leather case. He walked to the door.
"The method," he said, with his hand on the door and his back to her. "Behavioral signature analysis. Psychological profiling of perpetrators based on crime scene evidence."
"Yes."
"This is a recognized discipline?"
A pause that was, he noted, slightly longer than it needed to be. "In certain contexts."
"In what contexts?"
He heard the pen set down. "In contexts where the investigative community has advanced beyond relying exclusively on witness testimony and physical evidence."
He stood with his hand on the door and thought about that.
"How advanced," he said.
She was quiet for a moment.
"Very," she said.
He opened the door. The kỵ sĩ in the corridor straightened. He stepped through and then, for the second time, stopped.
The door was open. He was three steps from being in the corridor and two decisions from being done with this conversation. He stood in the threshold and felt the thing he had been turning over since the first night settle into something with edges.
"You did not drink the wine," he said.
"No."
"Why?"
Another pause. Shorter this time. "I do not drink at events where I am required to maintain my full cognitive function."
He absorbed that.
"And were you anticipating a need to maintain full cognitive function at the banquet?"
"I am always anticipating that need," she said. "It has never once led me wrong."
He went through the door.
He did not lock it.
The omission was deliberate — a test, of the kind he ran automatically on every variable in every situation, the small controlled experiment of leaving something available and observing what a person did with the availability. He walked to the end of the corridor and turned the corner and waited.
No footsteps behind him.
He stood at the end of the corridor for ninety seconds, counting, and heard nothing from the direction of her cell.
She had not tried the door.
He walked upstairs to his mật thất and spread the notes he had taken during the session across his desk — four pages of them, he noted, which was two more than he had taken in any prior session with any prior person — and read through them with the systematic attention he brought to all evidence.
The framework was coherent. More than coherent — it was rigorous, methodically constructed, and it addressed the elements of the case that had been troubling him since the first review of the evidence file. The timeline inconsistency he had registered but not foregrounded. The witness delay he had noted but not weighted sufficiently. The resource analysis he had not considered at all.
He picked up his pen.
Above the notes he wrote:
*Behavioral signature: OCD-adjacent organization, precision execution, institutional access, resource depth.*
*Witness testimony: constructed in 18-hour window. Source required.*
*Secondary source to investigation: identify.*
He looked at what he had written.
Then, below it, in smaller script, the question he had been not-asking himself for three days:
*Who taught her to see like this?*
The Black Dossier, six floors below, updated with quiet efficiency:
[ARBITER RESPONSE: PENDING AUTHORIZATION] [PROJECTED OUTCOME: CONSULTANT ROLE — PROBABILITY 67%] [CASE PROGRESS: 31%]
In the cell, Irene sat with the unlocked door and did not move, and thought about a man who had just spent an hour listening to her with his full attention, and who had walked away with four pages of notes, and who had forgotten to lock the door behind him.
She thought it was not entirely an accident.
She did not move toward the door.
But she noted it, filed it, added it to the profile she was building of the person who had just, without saying so and possibly without being fully aware of it himself, begun to listen.
