Neither of them spoke of it the following morning.
This was not, she understood, avoidance in the way that the past three weeks' careful distance had been avoidance — it was something quieter, more deliberate, the particular silence two people kept around something significant enough that words felt inadequate to its weight rather than threatening to it. She arrived at the mật thất at the usual hour, and Gavin greeted her with his usual quiet attention, and the name he had spoken in the dim crystal light the previous evening hung between them, unrepeated but entirely present, woven into the fabric of every subsequent interaction without requiring acknowledgment.
He used it now. Not always — in formal contexts, with Director Pell's staff present, the careful procedural address remained. But alone, in the mật thất, in the particular privacy of their shared work, he said her name with a naturalness that suggested the threshold he had crossed the previous night had become, simply, the new baseline rather than an exception requiring ongoing negotiation.
She found she did not mind the change. She found, examining the feeling with the careful honesty she had begun applying to her own internal architecture as thoroughly as she applied it to evidence, that she had been waiting for exactly this for longer than she had allowed herself to admit.
The report arrived at the ninth bell, carried by a courier whose urgency registered immediately in the particular quality of his bearing — not the calculated speed of routine business, but the genuine alarm of someone delivering news they understood to be significant.
Gavin read the brief summary first, his expression sharpening with the particular focus she had learned indicated genuine concern rather than simple procedural attention.
"Saint Malakai Orphanage," he said. "Three children reported missing over the past two months. The Church's internal investigation has produced nothing, and the families involved have begun petitioning the Imperial Court directly, which has finally forced a formal inquiry."
She took the report and read through it with growing unease, the pattern emerging even from the limited initial information — children disappearing without explanation, the institution's own records showing inconsistencies that suggested either incompetence or deliberate obfuscation, and a particular quality to the language used by the orphanage's administration that struck her, immediately, as practiced rather than genuine.
"This reads like institutional damage control," she said. "The careful phrasing, the emphasis on the children's 'troubled backgrounds' as though that somehow explains their disappearance — this is the language of people managing a narrative, not people genuinely concerned about missing children."
"I had the same reaction," Gavin said.
"Where is the orphanage?"
"Outside the capital. A day's journey, through territory that grows considerably less hospitable the further one travels from the city's central districts." His expression carried a particular grimness she had not seen from him since the early days of the Crown Prince investigation. "I've heard rumors about that institution before. Nothing substantiated. Nothing I could act on through formal channels. But the rumors were always — disturbing."
She felt the particular cold clarity of a case beginning to assemble itself from fragments before they had even left the capital. "What kind of rumors?"
"Children who age out of the system without any record of where they go afterward. Donations from sources that don't correspond to any documented charitable giving. A pattern of secrecy around the institution's internal operations that exceeds what even the Church's usual opacity typically requires."
She set the report down, the weight of what they were about to investigate settling into her chest with a particular gravity that exceeded even the Crown Prince case's political stakes.
"We need to go directly," she said. "Not through formal notification that gives the institution time to prepare for our arrival."
"Agreed," Gavin said. "We leave within the hour."
The preparation for departure carried a different quality than their journey to the capital weeks earlier — less the urgent momentum of an active investigation and more the grim, deliberate readiness of people preparing for something they suspected would be genuinely difficult to witness. She gathered her materials with the careful methodical attention she always applied to case preparation, and found, in the quiet moments before their departure, that Gavin's presence beside her carried a steadiness she had come to depend on without fully cataloguing the dependence until this particular moment made it visible.
"You're certain about this," he said, as they prepared to leave the mật thất. "Once we begin this investigation, there will be no comfortable way to step back from whatever we find."
"I wasn't planning to step back," she said. "Were you?"
He held her gaze for a moment, and something in his expression carried the particular gravity of a man who had spent years building a system designed to expose exactly the kind of institutional cruelty they were about to investigate.
"No," he said. "I wasn't."
They left the fortress together, the carriage pulling away from the structure that had become, over weeks of accumulated proximity, something closer to a home than either of them had perhaps intended it to become, and she watched the Borderland's familiar austere landscape give way, gradually, to territory she had not yet seen — the particular fog-shrouded approach to a place that, she understood with growing certainty, held secrets considerably darker than anything they had uncovered together so far.
