The fog began three hours into the journey and did not lift.
She had encountered fog before — the Borderland's frequent mists, the capital's occasional low cloud rolling in from the river — but this carried a different quality entirely, thick and persistent in a way that seemed to swallow sound as efficiently as it swallowed light, the carriage moving through a landscape that had gradually lost all definition beyond the immediate vicinity of the road.
"This is unusual," Gavin said, his attention fixed on the window with the particular focus she recognized as his Blackthorn sense engaging at low intensity. "Fog of this density, this far from any significant water source, doesn't occur naturally."
"Magical in origin?"
"Possibly. Or simply a consequence of whatever activities the orphanage has been concealing for years. Some forms of dark magic produce ambient atmospheric effects as a side consequence rather than a deliberate one." He was quiet for a moment, his expression carrying a particular grimness. "Either way, we should expect to find this place considerably more difficult to navigate, both literally and otherwise, than anything we've investigated previously."
She felt the weight of his warning settle into her chest alongside the fog's own oppressive presence, and found herself, for the first time since she had arrived in this world, genuinely uncertain about what awaited them.
The carriage emerged from the dense fog bank without warning, the orphanage materializing ahead of them with a suddenness that felt deliberate rather than incidental — Gothic stone architecture rising from the mist with iron gates overgrown with dead vines, the entire structure carrying an atmosphere of neglect that contrasted sharply with the careful institutional language of the report they had received.
This was not a place that had simply fallen into disrepair through ordinary inattention. This was a place that had been allowed, deliberately, to decay into precisely this state of forbidding isolation.
"No staff at the gates," Gavin noted, as their carriage drew to a halt. "No welcome for an unannounced inspection from the Grand Arbiter's office. That's either remarkable incompetence or deliberate strategy."
"I'd guess strategy," she said. "An institution this careful about its public language wouldn't be careless about basic security protocols."
They approached the iron gates together, the fog still clinging to the grounds despite their distance from the road, and she felt, for the first time in weeks, the particular vulnerability of operating without the familiar architecture of the fortress or the temporary investigative office — no Director Pell's staff, no formal jurisdiction beyond Gavin's own authority, just the two of them, alone, approaching a place that seemed designed to discourage exactly this kind of unannounced scrutiny.
The gates were unlocked.
This struck her as more significant than reassuring — an institution genuinely concerned with secrecy would have secured its perimeter more carefully, unless the lack of security suggested a confidence that whatever lay within would never be discovered regardless of who managed to gain entry.
"Stay close," Gavin said, the instruction carrying a quality that was not procedural caution but something closer to genuine concern for her safety in an environment neither of them fully understood.
She did not argue. She moved beside him through the gates, close enough that their proximity required no negotiation, the particular ease of accumulated trust now fully extended into genuine physical solidarity against whatever awaited them within the orphanage's walls.
The grounds themselves carried an atmosphere she found difficult to fully articulate — not simply neglect, but a particular quality of wrongness that registered, even through her trained analytical distance, as something closer to dread. The fog seemed thicker here, closer to the building itself, and the silence carried a weight that suggested the absence not merely of sound but of life itself, the particular stillness of a place that had forgotten, somehow, how to hold ordinary human activity.
"Do you feel that," she said, quietly, as they approached the building's main entrance.
"Yes," Gavin said, his voice carrying the same quiet unease she felt herself. "I've encountered the residue of significant dark magic before. This is considerably more concentrated than anything I've previously documented."
She activated the Dossier's passive scanning function, the familiar crimson interface flickering at the edge of her vision with a hesitancy she had not previously encountered, the system itself seeming to struggle against whatever ambient interference the location produced.
[SCAN COMPROMISED — SIGNIFICANT MAGICAL INTERFERENCE DETECTED] [RECOMMEND CAUTION]
"The Dossier is having difficulty operating here," she said.
"That is not reassuring," Gavin said.
They reached the main entrance, the heavy wooden door carrying the particular weathered quality of long neglect, and Gavin's hand found the handle with the deliberate care of someone preparing for whatever lay beyond.
"Whatever we find," he said, pausing before opening it, "we face it together. I will not have you take unnecessary risks alone in this place."
"I wasn't planning to," she said, and found, in the particular steadiness of her own voice, a confidence she drew directly from his presence beside her.
The door opened onto darkness, and they stepped through it together, into whatever awaited them within the fog-shrouded silence of Saint Malakai Orphanage.
