The archive room held records stretching back decades, the careful institutional documentation of children who had passed through Saint Malakai's care, and Irene began the methodical work of cross-referencing intake dates against discharge records with the particular thoroughness the situation demanded.
The pattern emerged slowly, painfully, across the first hour of review — discrepancies in dates, children whose discharge records carried vague language about "placement" without any corresponding documentation of where that placement had occurred, financial records showing payments received that didn't correspond to any standard adoption or apprenticeship fee structure she recognized from the empire's documented practices.
Gavin worked beside her in focused silence, his own attention cataloguing the institutional architecture of the deception with the particular investigative precision she had come to rely on as thoroughly as her own analytical methods.
"This child," she said, pulling a particular file that had caught her attention through its especially vague discharge documentation. "Discharged eighteen months ago. The record states 'transferred to alternative care' with no specifying detail whatsoever. No receiving institution named. No family identified."
She activated the Dossier on the file itself, the system's interference from the building's ambient magic still present but manageable enough to attempt a focused extraction on the physical document.
The extraction, when it came, hit her with a force she had not anticipated.
Three seconds of fragmented memory, but unlike the clinical detachment she had maintained through every previous extraction, this one carried an emotional weight that broke through her usual professional distance with devastating immediacy — a child's face, frightened, confused, being led away by figures whose features remained frustratingly indistinct, but whose collective posture carried an unmistakable quality of coercion rather than care.
She surfaced from the extraction with her hand trembling, the particular tell she had cultivated since childhood — gripping tightly to something solid, the quill pen on the archive table now bent under the force of her unconscious grip, her knuckles white with the strain of containing an emotional response she had not expected this case to provoke.
Gavin noticed immediately.
"Irene," he said, his voice carrying genuine alarm, his hand moving to steady hers before she had fully processed what she had witnessed.
"A child," she said, her voice carrying a rawness she rarely allowed to surface during active investigation. "Being taken. Not adopted — taken. The fear in that fragment was unmistakable."
Gavin's expression carried the particular grimness that had been building throughout their entire visit to this place, now sharpening into something closer to controlled fury. "How many records show similar discharge language?"
She forced herself back into analytical distance, the discipline she had built across years of professional practice reasserting itself despite the emotional weight of what she had just witnessed. "I'd need to complete the full review to be certain, but based on the pattern I've identified so far — potentially dozens, across the institution's recorded history."
"Dozens," Gavin repeated, the word carrying a weight that suggested he was calculating, in real time, the full scope of what they had stumbled into.
"This isn't simply corruption," she said, her voice steadying as she returned to the careful clinical framework that allowed her to process devastating information without being entirely overwhelmed by it. "This is systematic trafficking, conducted under the institutional cover of an orphanage's legitimate operations. Children being removed from care under deliberately vague documentation, with no corresponding record of their actual destination."
Gavin's hand remained on hers, steadying, present, the particular quality of physical comfort he had extended only rarely across their accumulated weeks of working partnership. "You don't have to continue the extractions alone," he said, his voice carrying genuine concern beneath the professional urgency. "If each pull costs you this much —"
"I have to continue," she said, the determination in her voice arriving with absolute conviction. "Every record I review without extraction is potentially another child whose fate we never fully understand. I can manage the cost."
He held her gaze for a long moment, and she watched him weigh his genuine concern for her wellbeing against the urgent necessity of the investigation, the particular calculation she had come to recognize as fundamental to his character — care expressed not through prevention, but through presence, through ensuring she never had to bear the weight alone even when the work itself required her continued engagement.
"Then I'll be here," he said, simply, "every time you surface."
She felt something in her chest ease, fractionally, at the steadiness of his commitment, and returned to the archive's remaining files with renewed determination, the particular horror of what they had uncovered now matched by an equally particular resolve to ensure every child's fate, however dark, would finally be brought into the light.
The work continued for hours, each subsequent extraction carrying its own weight of fragmented horror, and through each one, Gavin remained exactly where he had promised — present, steady, his hand finding hers each time she surfaced, the particular partnership they had built across weeks of accumulated trust now extended into territory considerably darker than either of them had previously navigated together.
