The hidden ledger emerged from beneath a false panel in the archive room's far wall, discovered only because Irene's careful methodical search pattern had included checking for exactly this kind of concealment — the particular instinct she had developed across years of forensic investigation, understanding that institutions sophisticated enough to fabricate official records this thoroughly would inevitably maintain a separate, more honest accounting for their own internal purposes.
The ledger's contents confirmed everything the fragmented extractions had suggested, and considerably more.
Dates. Names. Payment amounts received from sources identified only by coded designations rather than actual names — but the pattern was unmistakable, a systematic record of children removed from the orphanage's care in exchange for payments that bore no resemblance to legitimate adoption fees.
"This is comprehensive," Gavin said, reviewing the document over her shoulder, his proximity now entirely unremarkable after the accumulated intimacy of their hours working together through the archive's devastating revelations. "Years of systematic documentation. This isn't Crane acting alone — someone has been managing this operation's financial architecture with considerable sophistication."
"The coded designations," she said, studying the particular pattern of abbreviations used throughout the ledger. "They follow a structure I recognize from ecclesiastical administrative practice — the kind of coding system used to obscure transactions from anyone outside a very specific institutional hierarchy."
"Church involvement, beyond simply Crane and this individual institution."
"Almost certainly," she said, the implications settling into her chest with renewed weight. "This level of systematic concealment requires resources and protection that a single corrupt administrator couldn't maintain alone, particularly across the multi-year timeline this ledger documents."
She felt the particular tightness in her chest that had been building since the first extraction's devastating revelation, the controlled fury she had been managing throughout the day's investigation now compounding with each additional piece of evidence confirming the systematic scope of what they had uncovered. Her hands, when she reached for the next section of the ledger, carried a tension she hadn't fully registered until she noticed the fabric of her sleeve catching against her own grip.
Gavin noticed immediately, his attention sharpening with the particular focus she had learned indicated genuine concern overriding investigative momentum.
"Your hands," he said.
She looked down, registering for the first time the particular tell she had cultivated since childhood, now manifesting with an intensity she hadn't consciously chosen — her fingers twisted into the fabric of her cuff with enough force that the seam had begun, visibly, to strain.
"I'm managing it," she said, though the admission carried less conviction than she intended.
Gavin did not press further. He did not ask her to explain, or to justify the visible evidence of strain she had not intended to make so apparent. He simply moved, with the particular deliberate care she had come to associate with his most significant gestures, and positioned himself slightly closer than the moment strictly required — close enough that his presence registered as a steadying constant, without requiring either of them to name what the proximity represented.
She felt the closeness settle through her like a particular kind of anchor, the controlled fury and devastating grief of the day's revelations finding, in his presence, a containment she had not realized she needed until it was offered.
"We have enough evidence to expand this investigation considerably," he said, after a moment, his voice carrying the careful steadiness of someone choosing to redirect toward practical necessity rather than press into emotional territory neither of them had yet found adequate language for. "This goes beyond Saint Malakai. We need to understand the full scope of the network this ledger documents."
"Agreed," she said, grateful for the practical redirection even as she remained acutely aware of his continued proximity, the particular steadiness of his presence beside her as she forced her hands to relax their grip on the fabric, the strain easing by degrees as the immediate crisis of emotional overwhelm settled into something more manageable.
"Crane needs to be detained immediately," Gavin continued. "And we need significant reinforcement before we attempt any broader investigation into the network this ledger suggests. This is no longer a matter we can manage alone, regardless of how effective our partnership has proven across previous cases."
She nodded, the practical necessity of his assessment entirely sound despite the particular reluctance she felt at the prospect of expanding their investigation beyond the careful, accumulated partnership they had built together. "I agree. Though I suspect whatever reinforcement we secure will need very careful vetting, given how deeply this kind of corruption appears to extend."
"I have people I trust," Gavin said. "Not many. But enough."
She looked at him, the steadiness of his presence still anchoring her against the day's accumulated horror, and felt, alongside the professional urgency the situation demanded, a quieter recognition of exactly how thoroughly their partnership had become, across weeks of accumulated trust, something she now relied upon as fundamentally as she relied on her own analytical capabilities.
"Thank you," she said, "for staying close. Through all of this."
He held her gaze for a long moment, and something in his expression carried the particular gentle intensity she had glimpsed only rarely across their accumulated weeks together.
"I told you I would be here every time you surfaced," he said. "I intend to keep that promise for as long as this investigation requires it."
She felt the weight of his commitment settle into her chest alongside the devastating evidence spread across the archive table, and understood, with a clarity that arrived despite the day's horror, that whatever they had uncovered within Saint Malakai's walls, they would face the full reckoning of it together.
