The scaffold confirmed on the sixth day.
He told her at seven in the morning.
She was in the kitchen with her tea when he came in from the research wing. He set the final synthesis test results on the table. She read them. She read them completely -- all three pages, the structural confirmation, the yield data, the cascade interface measurements.
She set the results down.
"Viable," she said.
"Yes. Three independent synthesis cycles, consistent results. The yield is within the range I projected -- sufficient for clinical trial scale and the first treatment population." He paused. "It works."
She looked at the results. She thought about Vesti, who had been working on this in Year 2, who had drawn a structure for a nine-year-old who had been isolated for not complying, who had left the program in Year 3 because she disagreed with its direction. She thought about Yeva giving her the names and Vesti giving her the drawing and both of those being things a person could carry for twenty-two years and not know they would matter.
She said: "Tell Anwen today."
"I'm going to send the message now."
She looked at him. Something had changed in the past six days. Not the distance -- the distance was still there, the chairs at the kitchen table were still where they had been. But the something that had changed was smaller and more specific than the distance: he had been doing what he had said. Same day. Every day. The scaffold updates, the signal monitoring, the message to Bren. Small data points, accumulating.
She was still assessing. She had not finished assessing. But the data was there.
"Send it now," she said.
He went back to the research wing. She heard the relay send sequence. She sat at the kitchen table and looked at the scaffold results and thought about six days and about what came next.
What came next: move. The passive monitoring pattern had escalated to two queries per day in the past week. Not yet active tracking. Forty-eight hours of warning, if the escalation continued to active. They needed to be mobile before the escalation reached that threshold.
She picked up the relay route plan she had been finishing this morning. The northeast perimeter approach was complete -- every junction mapped, every relay node accounted for, the mid-sector anchor point Bren had identified included. The route was ready.
"The scaffold is confirmed," she said through the partition. "When can you break down the research wing?"
"Today," he said. "Most of it is portable -- I've been designing for mobility since we started discussing the move. Four to six hours to pack the critical equipment."
"Start this afternoon," she said. "I'll contact Bren for the extraction schedule."
"All right."
---
He told her something else at noon.
She was in the analysis room, going through the final relay extension documentation, when he came to the partition. She looked up.
"I want to tell you something," he said. "Not research."
She waited.
"I've been thinking about the model," he said. "Not the scaffold -- the other one. The extraction model." He paused. "I've been thinking about why I was afraid of your choice specifically."
"Tell me."
He sat in the analysis room chair -- not opposite her, beside her, which was where he had sat for the thirty-two names and for the scarf. She noticed the choice.
"I built my entire understanding of care around the idea that knowing more than someone else gives you the right to make decisions on their behalf," he said. "I built it when I was twelve and I've been operating on it since. Every time I've cared about someone, I've used that framework." He paused. "With Anwen. With the research. With you." He looked at his hands. "I was afraid of your choice specifically because I loved you and because the stakes were the highest I had ever faced and because in my framework the higher the stakes, the more the decision belongs to the person who knows most. I have always been the person who knows most. I have always been the one who decides."
She held this.
"I understand that's not how it works," he said. "I understand the framework is wrong. I understood it before you told me -- I understood the shape of it when I was doing it." He looked at her. "What I didn't understand until you were in front of me with the extraction model and I couldn't watch you look at it -- what I didn't understand until that moment -- is that the framework was wrong in its starting assumption."
"What's the starting assumption?"
"That knowing more means you know better." He paused. "I know the synthesis pathway. I know the mechanism. I know the model. But I don't know what your life is worth better than you do. No one knows that better than you." He looked at the analysis room table. "I knew the model. You know your life. Those are not the same kind of knowing and I treated them as if the first one gave me authority over the second."
She looked at him.
He said: "I don't know if this changes anything. I wanted to say it because it's true and because I haven't been saying the true things correctly for a very long time and I'm trying to change that."
She was quiet for a moment.
She said: "The assumption was wrong before the model. It's been wrong in smaller ways before Day 128."
"I know. The Anwen letters. The information I held back from Bren. The way I presented the research progress." He paused. "I've been managing reality for everyone in my life. I thought it was care. It was fear -- fear that if people saw the full picture they would make choices I couldn't control."
"Yes," she said.
"I'm going to keep getting this wrong," he said. "I don't know how to change a framework I've been operating on for nineteen years in a week. I'm going to get it wrong again. I want you to know that I know that."
She looked at him. She looked at him in the specific way she had been looking at him for the past six days -- not the distance, not the assessment from the early weeks, something in between. Reading him. Not deciding yet.
"I know," she said.
He nodded. He stood.
She said: "Lucan."
He looked at her.
"The chairs," she said. "At the kitchen table. They've drifted back to the original arrangement."
He looked at the kitchen, visible through the partition. He looked at the chairs.
"Yes," he said.
She looked at the relay route plan. "I'm going to put them back this evening," she said. "Where they were."
He held the look for a moment.
"All right," he said.
He went back to the research wing. She heard him begin the equipment breakdown -- careful, methodical, the specific sounds of someone packing research materials correctly. She went back to the relay documentation.
At four o'clock the passive monitoring flagged a change.
She looked at the display. The query frequency had increased: from two per day to six in the past two hours. This was the escalation pattern preceding active tracking. Not yet active. Within the window.
She went to the research wing.
"Passive monitoring escalated," she said. "Six queries in two hours. We need to move tomorrow morning."
He looked at the monitoring data she showed him. He did not argue. "I can have the research wing packed tonight."
"I'll contact Bren for a 0600 rendezvous at NE-4." She paused. "Pack what matters. Leave what doesn't."
"I know what matters," he said.
He looked at the research wing -- the synthesis equipment, the monitoring systems, the years of documentation. He looked at the notebook on the shelf.
She watched him look at the notebook.
"The notebook comes," she said.
He looked at her.
"It comes," she said again. "That's not what you leave."
He picked up the notebook. He put it in the pocket of the transit pack he had started assembling.
She went to the analysis room and started packing the maps.
---
She packed the maps first, then the transit notebook, then the letters from Anwen -- all of them, in order, the way you pack things that belong to a record.
He worked in the research wing. She could hear the specific sounds of careful packing: equipment wrapped, documentation organized, the specific methodical movement of someone who had thought about this sequence in advance and was executing it precisely.
She went to the kitchen. She moved the chairs -- not back to opposite ends, but to the angle they had been before Day 157. The angle of two people who had been eating dinner in the same space and had stopped tracking who sat where.
She stood in the kitchen after she moved them and looked at the angle.
She thought about the past six days. She thought about same day, every day. She thought about the scaffold and the Ivara Pell call and the message to Anwen and the conversation in the analysis room at noon -- *I don't know what your life is worth better than you do.* She thought about the chairs.
She thought about what trust was and what it was made of.
She had been thinking about trust as a binary state that had been damaged and needed to be rebuilt. She was revising this. Trust was not binary. It had been a specific construction between them -- built from months of correct behavior, from the conditions he had honored, from the preparation for her refusal, from the notebook and the greenhouse and the tea. The construction had been damaged when he violated the condition. The construction was the same construction. It was damaged, not destroyed.
A damaged structure could be worked on. She knew how to work on damaged structures. She had been doing it since she was eight years old.
She went back to the analysis room.
She worked on the relay documentation until the station's monitoring flagged a second escalation: eight queries in the past hour. This was faster than she had projected.
She went to the research wing. "Second escalation," she said. "Eight in the last hour. The pattern suggests active trace within twelve to eighteen hours."
He looked at the data. "We need to move tonight."
"Yes."
"I can finish the pack in three hours."
"I need two for the relay equipment." She looked at the monitoring display. "Tell Bren 2200 rendezvous instead of 0600."
He contacted Bren. Bren confirmed.
They worked in parallel through the evening -- she on the relay equipment and the route documentation, he on the research wing pack-out. They moved through the station separately at first, and then not separately because the station's corridor was narrow and the packing required coordination, and at some point they were working in the same space again and the coordination was the coordination they had been building for months and it was still there.
She noted this without comment.
At eight-thirty she brought him tea. She set it at the edge of the equipment pack without saying anything and went back to the relay documentation. She heard him pick it up. She heard the specific quiet of someone noticing that the tea was there.
At nine o'clock he came to where she was working on the relay equipment.
"The research wing is packed," he said. "Everything critical. The station documentation is in the archive -- the systems will stay running, maintaining the station as a valid research site in case it's found. The significant research is in the transit packs."
"Good." She checked her relay pack. "I'm two connections away from the final disassembly. Twenty minutes."
"I'll do the Surface Room."
"Leave the notebook shelf empty. The surface notebook comes in your pack. The rest of the shelf -- leave it. I want the shelf to be visible if they search the station." She paused. "I want whoever comes here to see that someone lived here. Not a research facility. A place people lived."
He was quiet for a moment. "Yes," he said.
He went to the Surface Room.
She finished the relay disassembly. She stood in the analysis room for a moment -- the narrow table, two chairs, the map drawer she had been pulling from for months. She looked at the chair arrangement.
She left the chairs in the angle she had set them in tonight.
She picked up her transit pack.
He came back from the Surface Room with the two transit packs they had pre-staged. He looked at the analysis room.
"The chairs," he said.
"I set them," she said.
He looked at her.
She said: "I'm not done with the assessment. I want you to know that. The data is accumulating and I'm still running it and I haven't decided yet." She paused. "But the chairs are at the angle. That's true right now."
He held her eyes.
"All right," he said.
She adjusted her pack. "2200. NE-4. Let's go."
---
They went up through the surface hatch at nine-forty.
She led. She knew the route -- she had mapped every meter of it, had walked sections of it in the early morning runs, had built the relay network through it. He followed her at the standard distance, carrying the research packs, moving with the efficiency of someone who trusted the person in front of them to know where they were going.
The surface was in its late-night atmospheric state -- dark, the biopressure shimmer active in the northeast, the ruins quiet. She navigated without hesitation. Northeast sector, junction A to junction C, the specific terrain she had been building in her memory since the first weeks.
At one point she stopped at a junction marker she had installed -- a reflective tag at knee level, invisible to standard Recovery Corps scanning but visible to anyone who knew the tag pattern. She checked the frequency reader she carried. No active Recovery Corps signal within the current range.
"Still passive," she said. "We have time."
"How far to NE-4?"
"Twenty-two minutes at this pace."
She kept moving.
The transit hour was hours away. The surface was dark and she knew every step of it and behind her he was following correctly, the packs balanced, not slowing her. She thought: this is the route I built. This is what it is for -- the research moving through the infrastructure I made, toward the place it needs to go.
She thought: I built a route for the research and I am running it.
She thought: we are both running it.
At nineteen minutes, she saw the NE-4 junction lights in the distance. Bren's vehicle was already there, dark and low, the lights off. She saw the shape of it and felt the specific relief of a planned route completing as projected.
She stopped. She turned to Lucan.
"We're almost there," she said.
He looked at the junction lights. He looked at her.
"Yes," he said.
She turned back toward the junction and moved toward it, and he moved beside her, and the station was two hundred meters behind them and the research was in the packs they were carrying and the route was working exactly as she had built it to work.
---
Bren was waiting at the junction with the vehicle and a thermal pack and the specific efficiency of someone who had been running supply routes in difficult terrain for a long time and did not waste motion.
He looked at both of them when they arrived. He looked at the packs, at the way they were positioned, at the distance between them. He read the situation the way he always read situations: accurately, without requiring confirmation.
He said: "Scaffold confirmed?"
"Yes," Lucan said.
"And you're both out."
"Yes," Mirelle said.
Bren looked at her. He said: "The passive monitoring will escalate to active within three hours. You need to be out of the northeast sector before that."
"I know the window," she said. "What's the route to the mid-sector anchor point?"
He told her. She confirmed it against the plan she was carrying. Three modifications from her original projection -- she incorporated them.
"Anwen?" Lucan said.
"She's been moved to the secondary facility." Bren looked at him. "Off the Recovery Corps registry. Ivara Pell is there -- she contacted the facility director two days ago. I don't know what she said but they let her in." He paused. "Anwen has the application. Dr. Ohen has the scaffold results you sent this morning." He paused again. "She asked me to tell you: she's starting the fourth volume."
Lucan was quiet for a moment.
Mirelle said: "Let's move."
They loaded the packs into the vehicle. Bren drove. Mirelle navigated from the route plan she was holding. Lucan sat beside her in the back, the research packs between them and on the floor, the station receding in the northeast sector behind them.
She looked at the surface as they moved through it. The biopressure shimmer was active in the atmosphere above, the specific blue-violet of the Lumen cycle at this hour. She had been on this surface for twenty-three years. She knew it better than any route she had ever built.
She thought about the station. She thought about the chairs in the analysis room set at the angle she had put them in tonight. She thought about the notebook shelf, empty, visible if anyone searched -- and the space where the notebooks had been, showing that a person had lived there.
She thought about the greenhouse, two hundred meters northeast, still standing, the UV-filtered panels intact.
She thought: it will still be there. The light will still come through the northeast panels at transit hour. Someone will find it eventually and not know what it was built for.
She thought: it was built for the right thing. Whatever else happened, it was built for the right thing.
The vehicle moved through the northeast sector, following the route she had planned, and the station was behind them, and the research was in the packs, and somewhere in a secondary Bellhaven facility Anwen was starting the fourth volume of a book series she had decided she would finish.
Mirelle held the route plan and navigated and thought about what came next. The data was still accumulating. The assessment was still running.
The chairs were at the angle.
That was true tonight, and it was enough for tonight.
She would let tomorrow be tomorrow.
You've reached the end of this chapter
