The mid-sector safe house was a converted equipment storage unit at relay junction M-7, which Bren had been using as a staging point for supply routes since before the station had gone off-grid.
It was small -- three rooms, no windows, ventilation adequate but not comfortable. It was not the station.
Bren left them there at two in the morning with supplies and the route plan to the secondary Bellhaven facility and a brief: "Halden's unit reached the northeast sector boundary twenty minutes ago. They're moving toward the station's area. You have a minimum of six hours before they establish a search perimeter wide enough to cover this location. I'll be at M-11 at 0800 for the next leg."
He left.
She sat down on the storage unit's one functioning chair and looked at the equipment around her -- crates, relay hardware, Bren's inventory. Not hostile, not dangerous. Simply not the station.
Lucan was at the other side of the room, the research packs arranged near the door for easy movement. He was doing the inventory check she had watched him do at the station every time they had prepared to move anything significant: methodical, confirming each item against the list he carried in his head.
She watched him check the packs.
She thought about the past six days. She thought about what the data showed: same day, every day. The scaffold confirmations reported immediately. The Ivara Pell temperature profile passed on without delay. The message to Anwen told to her the day it was sent. The chairs. The notebook.
She thought about the conversation at noon: *I don't know what your life is worth better than you do.*
She thought about what it meant that he had said that out loud, without being required to, before the departure had required them to be in the same physical space again.
She thought: the data is accumulating toward a conclusion.
She was not there yet. But she could see where the data was going.
He finished the inventory check. He looked at her.
"All critical research materials confirmed," he said. "The scaffold documentation is in the primary pack. The compound transit container is secure."
"And the notebook?"
He touched the outside of the transit pack. "In the secondary pack."
She looked at him. She thought about the notebook and about the entry he had written in it: *I love you.* Three words, small, at the bottom of the last page, written the same night he had closed the extraction model. She had known about those words since before the scaffold confirmation. She had been sitting with them for days.
She thought: he wrote the truth in the notebook before he could say it to me. He writes the truth before he can say it. The notebook has been the place where what is real exists before it arrives in the room.
She said: "When we're at the secondary facility -- when there's time -- I want to read the surface notebook. From the beginning. All the entries from before I arrived."
He looked at her. "Yes," he said.
She said: "Not now. Later. When there's time."
"I know."
She nodded. She looked at the storage unit. It was not the station. But the transit hour would come in four hours, and they were in the northeast sector, and tomorrow they would be in the Bellhaven range.
"Sleep," she said. "0800 is six hours."
"You too."
"I know."
He arranged the research packs as a barrier between the door and the sleeping space, which was also the floor of the storage unit, which was also the only option. She had slept in worse conditions for seven years. She lay down.
He lay down on the other side of the packs.
She thought about the station -- the analysis room, the Surface Room, the greenhouse two hundred meters northeast. She thought about the chair arrangement she had left.
She thought: the greenhouse is still there. The light will come through the panels at transit hour. Whoever finds it will find a space that was built for a specific thing, and they won't know what it was, and it will still have been built for the right thing.
She slept.
---
In the morning Bren was at M-11 as promised.
He had news: the Recovery Corps unit had reached the station area at 0340 and had entered the station at 0412. No occupants found. The station's research equipment had been partially removed -- the Recovery Corps would know the occupants had departed in an organized manner rather than fled. Halden's response was not yet known.
"How long until they establish the search perimeter?" Mirelle said.
"Six hours, if they're efficient. Twelve if they're working at standard Corps pace." Bren looked at the route plan. "You need to be in the Bellhaven secondary facility before they have enough geographic data to project the route."
"We will be," she said.
They drove through the mid-sector in Bren's vehicle. She navigated. He drove. Lucan worked -- the transit time was research time, the synthesis documentation organized in sequence, the scaffold protocol written up in the clean format the Bellhaven registry would need for the enrollment application.
She watched him work without watching him. She was navigating but she was also aware of the specific quality of him working in the back of the vehicle -- the focused efficiency, the pen moving, the occasional pause to check a calculation. She had been watching him work for five months. She knew the specific quality of his focus when the work was going well.
It was going well.
At the M-17 junction she said: "Two hours to the secondary facility at this pace."
"Anwen knows we're coming?" he said.
"She knows today. Not the exact time."
He was quiet for a moment. He was looking at the documentation and also somewhere else. She knew this quality too -- the specific looking-at-two-things-at-once that happened when he was processing something beyond the work.
"She's going to look different," he said. "From the last time I saw her. The Stage II progression--"
"I know."
"I don't know how to prepare for that."
She looked at the route. She said: "You don't need to prepare. You show up. That's the preparation."
He was quiet.
"She's been waiting for you to show up," she said. "Not with a cure. Just -- show up and be there. The rest is the research's work, not yours."
He said: "It's hard to separate those."
"I know." She tracked the route marker. "But when you walk into that room, you're her brother. Not the researcher. Just that."
He did not respond immediately. She continued navigating.
After a while he said: "Thank you."
She nodded. She kept her eyes on the route.
The vehicle moved through the mid-sector and the surface was above them and the research was packed and the Bellhaven range was two hours away and she was navigating correctly and they were both still here.
---
At the one-hour mark she said: "Tell me about her. How she was."
He looked up from the documentation. She was not looking at him -- she was tracking the route, the relay markers at junctions, the distance to the next checkpoint. But she had asked.
He thought about this. He thought about what *how she was* meant -- which version he was being asked for. He said: "When?"
"When you were young. Before the illness."
He thought about Anwen before the illness. Anwen at twelve, before the first imaging that had shown the early cellular changes. He said: "She was impossible to argue with. Not because she was aggressive -- because she was very precise about what she actually meant and very good at identifying when you were being imprecise about what you meant. She would stop in the middle of an argument and say: I think you mean something different than what you said, and she was usually right." He paused. "I found this infuriating for about two years and then I understood it was the thing I liked most about her."
"She hasn't changed," Mirelle said.
"No."
"She does that in letters too. She'll stop in the middle of something she's writing and say: I think I meant something different than what I wrote. And then she rewrites it."
He looked at the route ahead. He thought about Anwen at twelve learning to be precise about what she meant and Anwen at twenty-one writing letters that stopped and rewrote themselves.
"She's been that way since she could form sentences," he said. "My mother used to say Anwen was the only person she had ever met who apologized to inanimate objects when she knocked them over, and meant it."
Mirelle was quiet for a moment. He heard the quality of it -- the smile quality, the one she had that was not quite visible from this angle but that was in the specific sound of her silence.
"I believe that," she said.
They drove. The route continued. He went back to the documentation.
At the forty-minute mark she said: "The assessment is finishing."
He went still.
"I'm not done processing," she said. "I don't know if I'll ever be fully done processing. But the assessment -- the specific question of whether I can keep trusting you -- I can see the conclusion."
He did not ask what the conclusion was. He waited.
She said: "You violated the condition and you confirmed it while violating it and that was the thing I needed to process. I've processed it." She tracked a route marker. "What I've also processed is the six days after, and the same day that was actually same day, and the conversation in the analysis room." She paused. "And the fact that you told me about the message to Anwen. And the chairs."
He was very still.
"I'm not going to pretend the twenty-nine days didn't happen," she said. "They happened. I'm going to know they happened. But the twenty-nine days are part of a larger record and the larger record is -- what it is." She took a breath. "I can keep trusting you. With the understanding that the framework you're operating from has a specific failure mode and I'm now watching for it."
He said: "Yes. You should watch for it."
"I will." She navigated a junction. "And when I see it, I'll tell you. Same way I told you at Day 157."
"Yes."
"I won't wait for it to be a crisis."
"I know."
She was quiet for a moment. Then she said: "Lucan."
"Yes."
"I love you."
He heard it. He sat with it. He thought about the specific weight of those words from this person in this vehicle on a surface route in the mid-sector after the past week had been what it had been.
He said: "I know." And then: "I love you."
She kept her eyes on the route.
He went back to the documentation.
They were not back to where they had been. He did not think they would ever be exactly back to where they had been -- what had happened had changed things, the way anything that breaks and is repaired is changed by the break. The repair was real. The break was also real.
He thought: this is more honest than what it was before. The before had not known its own fault lines. This knew.
He thought: I will spend the rest of however long we have watching for the fault line. Not because she required it. Because she was right to require it and because he had the specific knowledge of his own failure mode now and knowledge was supposed to change behavior.
He thought: I believe it will. I'm going to let the time show it.
The documentation was in his hands and the route was unfolding correctly and in forty minutes they would reach the secondary Bellhaven facility and he would walk into a room where his sister had been waiting for him with the specific patience of someone who had been reading fast to see how it ended.
He kept working.
---
They arrived at the secondary Bellhaven facility at ten-forty in the morning.
The facility was a converted research annex in the city's outer residential sector -- not the main hospital complex, an older building that had been repurposed for treatment programs that needed to operate outside the standard registry. It did not look like a hospital from the outside. This was intentional.
Bren let them in through the service entrance. The director had been briefed -- a sparse man named Ardell who shook their hands without excessive commentary and took them to the treatment wing.
Lucan stopped in the corridor outside the room.
She saw him stop. She stood beside him in the corridor and did not push. She thought about what he had said in the vehicle: *I don't know how to prepare for that.* She had said: you show up. She meant it.
He looked at the door.
He knocked.
Anwen said: "Come in."
He opened the door.
She did not go in immediately. She waited in the corridor while he went into the room, and she heard the specific quality of two people who had not been in the same space for a long time arriving at each other. She did not need to witness it. It was between them.
After a few minutes Anwen's voice said: "Mirelle. Come in."
She went in.
Anwen was smaller than she had imagined from the letters -- not in the way of illness making someone smaller, though the Stage II progression was visible in the specific quality of her face and the way she held her body. Smaller in the way of someone who had been imagined as a presence and is now, in person, a specific human being with a particular shape and a particular expression.
She had Lucan's grey eyes.
She was smiling.
"You're the one who described the light," Anwen said.
"Yes," Mirelle said.
"Sit down," Anwen said, and gestured to the chair beside the bed, and Mirelle sat, and Lucan was on the other side, and the room held all three of them, and Anwen looked at both of them with the specific attention of someone who had been waiting a long time to see a thing they had been trying to picture from partial information.
"Good," Anwen said, to no one in particular.
"What's good?" Lucan said.
"Everything," Anwen said. "It looks like I thought it would. That's all."
Mirelle looked at Lucan. He looked at her. He had the expression she had learned to read as incoming precision from him, which meant he was about to say something exact about something large.
He said: "We're going to start the treatment as soon as the registry processes the enrollment."
"I know," Anwen said. "Dr. Ohen told me. Three days for processing." She looked at her brother. "You built the scaffold from what Mirelle remembered."
"Yes."
Anwen looked at Mirelle. "She gave you the structure."
"Yes," Mirelle said. "It was mine to give. I gave it."
Anwen looked at her hands. Then at both of them. She said: "I am going to see the hydroponic trees flower."
"Yes," Lucan said.
"And I'm going to visit the house with the northeast window."
"Yes," Mirelle said.
"And finish the book series," Anwen said.
"Yes," they both said.
Anwen looked at the room. She looked at the window, which was not northeast-facing and which was not the transit hour and which was a hospital window in a secondary facility. She looked at it anyway with the specific quality of someone who had been following the light wherever she could find it.
"The third volume is very complicated," she said. "But the ending of it is worth getting there." She looked at her brother. "I looked ahead to check."
He looked at her. "You looked ahead."
"I needed to know the ending was going to be worth it." She looked at him steadily. "It is."
He was quiet for a long moment.
Mirelle sat in the chair beside Anwen's bed and looked at the room -- the specific quality of a place where something difficult was happening and also where something real was happening, and where both of those things were true at the same time and neither one cancelled the other.
She thought: I am in the room. I am here.
She thought: this is where the route led.
She thought: it was the right route.
Later, in the corridor outside Anwen's room, Lucan stood for a moment with his back against the wall and his eyes closed.
She stood beside him and did not say anything. There was nothing to say. This was the moment after the arrival -- the specific quality of someone who has been moving toward something for a long time and has reached it and is now simply here.
She stood beside him in the corridor and he was still and she was still and the facility was quiet around them.
After a while he opened his eyes. He looked at the corridor. He looked at her.
She said: "She checked ahead."
"Yes."
"The ending is worth it."
He looked at her with the expression that was not the almost-smile. The full one. The one she had seen in the greenhouse when she was in the light without a mask and he was watching her without the filter.
"Yes," he said.
She thought: there it is.
She thought: that is the ending worth getting to.
She put her hand on his arm -- not contact in the testing sense, not the examination room protocol. Just her hand on his arm in the corridor outside his sister's room, for a few seconds, and then she let go and they walked together toward the research room where the documentation was waiting.
The work was there. They both went toward it.
You've reached the end of this chapter
