The grid F-9 investigation had hit a wall by the second morning.
He had assembled what he could from the Traffic intercepts and the district database: signal location approximate, entity profile preliminary, behavior pattern consistent with non-predatory high-rank. But the data was thin. Traffic's internal communications gave him the outline of a picture, not the picture itself — a signal somewhere in a four-block radius, a preliminary rank assessment that could be wrong by two or three ranks in either direction, and the behavioral anomaly that had caught Co Tham's attention: an entity with significant capacity that was not feeding, not attacking, not doing anything that high-rank entities typically did when they arrived in a populated area.
"We need closer-source data," he said.
Mien looked up from the notebook. "Traffic has what we don't."
"Yes."
She looked at the map. "The profile Traffic is building — they're gathering it in real time. We're only seeing what they've chosen to transmit."
"Yes."
"Which means the picture we have might not be the accurate picture."
He looked at her. "You think they're misreading it."
"I think they might be. An entity that's actively hiding, that has the capacity to hurt the people around it and isn't — Traffic's protocols aren't designed to account for that. Their protocol is: high rank, populated area, potential threat, neutralize." She paused. "They might be about to neutralize something that doesn't need to be neutralized."
He looked at the map.
"I know," he said.
She said: "So what do we do?"
He looked at the map.
He said: "I don't know yet."
---
At ten forty-eight, the Building A camera flagged Dieu at the gate.
He registered her before the System alert — the specific quality of her movement, which he had catalogued well enough to identify from camera resolution at a distance. Civilian clothes, no visible equipment, no support team. Standing slightly back from the gate. Looking at the intercom without pressing it.
He looked at Mien.
She had already seen the feed.
"She came on her own," she said.
"Yes."
"I'll go out," he said.
---
She turned when she heard the gate.
"I'm not here on behalf of Traffic," she said, before he had said anything.
He waited.
"I have information," she said. "You might need it."
"Grid F-9," he said.
She didn't look surprised that he knew. "Yes."
He opened the gate.
She came through.
He didn't bring her inside — they stood at the edge of the courtyard near the gate, far enough from the building's camera positions that the conversation would have minimal recording. She was aware of the camera positions too.
"There's an entity in grid F-9," she said. "You know about it."
"I know what Traffic's communications say about it."
"Which isn't everything." She looked at the building briefly, then back at him. "What Traffic's communications don't say is that I've been the one running the preliminary surveillance. The signal assessments."
He looked at her.
"The entity in F-9," she said, "is not a threat. I've been watching the behavioral profile for three weeks. It's actively suppressing its own ambient output. It's staying in a location that minimizes contact with populated areas. It's not feeding. It's not acting aggressively." She paused. "It's doing everything you'd do if you were trying not to be found."
He thought about twenty-five point eight and practice sessions and the adaptive seal theory.
"You've filed the assessments that match the protocol," he said.
"Yes. Because if I file what I actually observe, Co Tham asks questions I can't answer in a way that ends well." She looked at him directly. "The entity is hiding. I don't know from what. But it knows Traffic is looking for it, or something like it, and it's trying to avoid being found."
He looked at her.
"Why are you telling me this?" he said.
She was quiet for a moment.
"Because you're the person who takes things that Traffic files as potential threats and doesn't let them be filed that way," she said. "You're the person who looked at your building's visitor and decided inconclusive was the right answer, even though I couldn't say that officially." She paused. "I don't know what's in grid F-9. But I know what's not there is something that deserves to be found the way you found yours."
He looked at the building.
He thought about a vacant lot. About a cocoon. About a decision made in ten seconds.
"Co Tham's timeline," he said.
"Two weeks. Maybe less. He's been pushing for escalation." She looked at the gate. "That's the word they use. Neutralize."
"I'll look into it," he said.
"I know you will." She held his gaze. "That's why I'm here."
She turned and walked out through the gate.
He watched her go until she was around the corner and ten seconds past that.
Then he went inside.
---
Mien was in the spare chair when he came through the door.
She had heard the conversation — the door had been open.
"She's been falsifying her assessments," Mien said.
"Adjusting them. To match what the protocol expects rather than what she observes."
"To protect the entity."
"Yes."
Mien thought about that. "She filed C-7 as inconclusive because she believed it was inconclusive. And now she's falsifying F-9 assessments because she's found something that isn't a threat and doesn't want it treated as one."
He looked at the map.
"That's the pattern," he said.
"The entity is hiding."
"Yes."
"Hiding from Traffic specifically? Or hiding generally?"
"Unknown. She doesn't know either."
Mien looked at the map. "If it's hiding from something that came with it from the demon world, the hiding isn't over just because Traffic doesn't find it. Whatever it's hiding from might still be there." She paused. "You'd need to know what you were dealing with before you could help."
He looked at the map.
"I need to find it," he said.
"Yes."
"Which means going to grid F-9."
She looked at him. "When?"
"Soon. Before Co Tham escalates."
"I'm coming with you," she said.
He looked at her.
She said it the way she said most things — not with emphasis, just as information. It was what was going to happen.
He thought about B-rank adaptive interface confirmed. He thought about reading music from inside the boundary logic.
"We go together," he said.
She nodded.
---
After dinner — rice and greens and the silence of two people working through something internally — he updated the F-9 document.
What Dieu had added: behavioral suppression active, ambient output manually reduced, non-predatory profile confirmed by extended observation, entity aware of being tracked.
He wrote it out. He looked at it.
He thought about the adaptive seal theory and how Mien had described what the self-imposed seal felt like: a definition of herself, contained, a boundary she had set around a version that could survive. The entity in F-9 was doing something that looked, from the outside, like the same practice.
He looked up from the document.
Mien was at the north window, the one that faced grid F-9. Standing with her arms crossed, looking at the city in that direction.
"You're thinking about what it might be," he said.
She didn't turn. "Aren't you?"
"Yes," he said.
She was quiet for a moment. "What do you see?"
"Something like what Traffic described. Signal with significant capacity. Active suppression. Non-predatory. Staying small." He paused. "And something that knows it needs to stay small."
She turned from the window.
She looked at him in the lamplight — the full, direct attention she gave to things that required it. Not the assessment expression. The other one.
"Anh biết điều tôi thấy ở anh không?" she said.
He looked at her.
She had shifted into Vietnamese without noticing, the way people sometimes shifted into the language that felt most natural for the thing they were saying. He registered this and stayed in the register of the conversation.
"Không," he said.
"You do things no one asks you to do," she said — and then she continued in English, as though the shift had been a starting-point and the content had to come out in whatever language carried it. "Not because someone asks. Not because the operational situation requires it. Because you look at something and decide it should be done and then you do it." She paused. "The Venomfang Rat at three in the morning. Me, in a vacant lot. Grid F-9. Dieu coming here because she thought you were the kind of person who would do something with the information."
He looked at her.
"That's not always true," he said.
"Frequently enough that I've noticed."
He looked at the document.
He thought about frequently enough that I've noticed, and how long she had been here to accumulate the frequency, and what thirty-seven days of observation looked like.
He thought: yes.
He looked at the document.
He went back to work.
---
At midnight he was still looking at the sector map.
He had been mapping possible locations for the past hour. He had three candidates. He looked at them.
He thought about going to grid F-9. He thought about Mien saying I'm coming with you, and his own response: we go together. He thought about what Dieu had said: you're the person who looks at things Traffic files as potential threats and doesn't let them be filed that way.
He thought about what that meant he was.
He thought: yes.
He turned off the lamp.
He said, to the dark: "I'll find you."
Then he went to sleep.
Twelve to fourteen days before Co Tham moved.
Three days to prepare.
He lay in the dark.
He thought about Mien looking at him in the lamplight and saying: frequently enough that I've noticed.
He let it be what it was.
He went to sleep.
---
Day thirty-eight.
Ambient: twenty-four point one. Sixteen days to the target.
He made tea.
She came out and looked at the display. "Twenty-four point one."
"Sixteen days."
She went to the window. He set the second cup on the windowsill.
"I've been thinking about what you said last night," she said. "About finding something that didn't expect to be found by anyone who means it well."
He looked at the map.
"I was that thing," she said. "I didn't know what to expect. I didn't know anything. I woke up and you were there and you gave me a name and didn't report me and I didn't understand what that meant for a long time."
He looked at her.
"I understand it now," she said. "Thirty-eight days of what that means."
He looked at the map.
"I'm glad you do," he said.
She looked at him. "I know," she said. "That's the other thing I've noticed."
He looked at the map.
"Three days," he said.
"Three days," she said.
They went to work.
The morning had the quality of mornings that knew they were part of something, that knew what they were part of, and were content to be that.
Ordinary and otherwise.
Three days.
After that: grid F-9, and whatever was there, and the room that held what it held.
He worked.
She worked.
The city ran its morning operations outside the window.
Three days.
