The morning session on day seventy-six had the quality of a session that had become what it was going to be.
Not the quality of something that had just settled — the quality of something that had been settled long enough to feel simply like the way things were. Thần held at thirteen point five without apparent effort for the full forty minutes.
They came upstairs.
He made tea. He set the second cup on the windowsill. She went to the window.
"I'm going to ask Mrs. Nam today," she said.
"The building history?"
"Yes. I've been thinking about how to make it a conversation instead of an interview."
"Go in the afternoon," he said. "Not the morning. She's better in the afternoon. The morning is for her plants and her phone calls."
"How do you know when she has phone calls?" Mien said.
"The blue curtains," he said. "When they're open in the morning, she's up but occupied. When they're half-drawn, she's on the phone."
Mien looked at the camera feed.
"I didn't know that," she said.
"Now you do."
She said: "Her blue curtains. They've been there since before you arrived?"
"Since before I arrived," he said. "I found them in the district photo records from fifteen years ago."
She looked at him. "You looked at the district photo records."
"Standard monitoring practice."
"You looked at them for the same reason I'm going to ask her. You wanted to know."
He looked at the feed.
"Yes," he said.
---
At two-fourteen, she went downstairs.
He watched the camera: she knocked on Mrs. Nam's door. Mrs. Nam's expression when she saw Mien was different — brighter, more direct. The expression of someone seeing a person they were pleased to see.
They talked at the door for a minute. Then Mrs. Nam stepped back and let her in.
He went back to work.
---
She came back at four-twenty-three.
She set her notebook on the desk.
"She talked for two hours," she said.
She sat down in the spare chair. The notebook was full — several pages of notes, dense notation.
"About everything," she said. "Not just the building. The neighborhood. The war. What the district was like before, and after. Who she was when she moved in and who she is now."
He looked at the notebook.
"What did she say?" he said.
Mien looked at the notebook.
She told him: Mrs. Nam and her husband had moved into C-7 twenty-six years ago. The husband had died in the fourth year. Mrs. Nam had stayed because the building was home. She told him about the families that had come and gone — ones she had known well and ones she had barely known. She told him about the way the building had changed.
And then Mien said: "She talked about you."
He looked at her.
"Not immediately," she said. "We'd been talking for about an hour and a half. She was telling me about the security guards before you — four of them. Three stayed less than a year. The fourth stayed two years but moved for a better posting." She paused. "And then she said: 'The current one came three years ago. I thought he would go the way the others did. But then he started fixing things.' "
He looked at the notebook.
"She said it like a category of information," Mien said. "Like there was a thing people did when they were going to stay, and the thing was — fixing things that didn't need to be fixed, that nobody had asked them to fix."
He thought about the leak in the basement pipe.
He thought about the northeast camera sensor.
He thought about the east perimeter wall repair.
"She said: 'That's the sign that someone is going to stay,' " Mien said.
He looked at the window.
Mien said: "Did you ever think you'd stay? When you arrived?"
He looked at her.
He thought about it honestly.
"No," he said. "I arrived and thought I would be here for a year. Maybe two."
"What changed?"
"I don't know when it changed," he said. "But Mrs. Nam is right about the pipe. I fixed a basement pipe in year two — a slow leak nobody knew about except me. I could have filed it as someone else's problem." He paused. "I fixed it."
"Not because you had to," she said.
"No," he said. "Because I didn't want the building to have a leaking pipe."
She was quiet for a moment.
"Because you were already thinking of it as yours," she said.
He looked at the window.
"Yes," he said.
She looked at the notebook.
"Mrs. Nam has been watching that for three years," she said.
"Yes," he said. "It appears she has."
---
Dinner, dishes, lesson.
The seventh lesson: compound sentences. He worked through the pattern. She took notes and asked questions.
At the end of the instruction section, he said: "Practice sentences. Write three about the building. Use compound structure for at least one."
She wrote.
He watched from the corner of his attention. The pen moved steadily. She paused occasionally with the quality of constructing something carefully, not searching for vocabulary.
She finished.
She turned the notebook toward him.
He read.
Sentence one: building location and age. Wrong classifier — a minor error, common. He made a small correction.
Sentence two: about the residents. Two subordinate clauses. She had gotten the first right and made an error in the second. He marked it and showed her the correction.
He read sentence three.
The building's security guard fixes things that no one can see because he wants this place to be good.
He read it again.
The grammar was correct. The classifier was correct. The tonal notation was correct. The compound structure — the relative clause, the causal subordination — was exactly right.
No errors.
He looked at the sentence.
He set the pen down.
He looked at her.
She was looking at him with the expression that had no name — the fully defined one.
He looked at the sentence.
He looked at her.
The room had the quality of something that had been said in a way that couldn't be unsaid, written in a language she had been learning for seven days, constructed with grammar she had been learning for one day, and that had come out correct on the first try.
He picked up the pen.
He wrote in the margin beside sentence three: Correct.
He set the pen down.
He said: "Mrs. Nam was right."
She looked at him.
"That's the sign that someone is going to stay," he said. "Fixing things that no one can see."
She held his gaze.
He held hers.
One moment.
Two.
"Yes," she said.
He looked at the sentence.
She looked at the sentence.
Neither of them said anything for a while.
Then she put the lesson notebook in her drawer.
He closed the lesson folder.
He went back to the operational log.
She went to the sofa with her book.
The room held what it held.
---
He wrote the log entry at ten.
Day 78. Ambient 13.4. Lesson 7: Mien wrote 3 sentences about the building. Sentence 3 was correct. Note: She saw it. She wrote it. I didn't know Mrs. Nam had been watching that closely. Apparently she has been for three years.
He thought about three years and Mrs. Nam's blue curtains and the basement pipe.
He thought: she knew before I did. Mrs. Nam knew I was going to stay before I did.
He added: 12 days.
---
Day seventy-nine. Ambient: thirteen point three. Eleven days.
At the window: "You wrote the sentence correctly," he said.
She looked at him. "I practiced it in my head first."
"It showed."
She looked at the window. "I wanted to get that one right."
He looked at the window. "I know."
The morning continued.
---
In the afternoon, Mrs. Nam came by unexpectedly with soup.
She looked at both of them.
She said: "I've been thinking about our conversation yesterday. I told your Mien some things. I thought you should know."
He said: "She told me."
Mrs. Nam nodded. She sat down.
"When I said that thing about people who stay — I thought you knew."
"I think I knew," he said. "But I didn't have a word for it."
Mrs. Nam said: "The word is: home."
She said it simply, without elaboration.
He looked at the table.
"Yes," he said.
Mrs. Nam looked at Mien. "And you."
Mien looked at her.
"Same word," Mrs. Nam said. "Same reason."
Mien was quiet.
"I know," she said.
Mrs. Nam nodded.
They ate the soup.
The room was quiet after something true had been said.
---
After Mrs. Nam left, Mien said: "She said 'home.'"
"Yes," he said.
She looked at the table. "I've been calling it that. In my head, since around day thirty."
He looked at her. "Day thirty."
"Before I knew everything I know now," she said. "Before the walk and the lessons and 'so do I.' It felt like home before it was everything it is."
He looked at the table.
"You didn't say anything," he said.
"You were managing everything. I didn't want to add to it."
He looked at her. "It would have been the opposite of adding."
She looked at him. "I know that now."
He looked at the table.
"I would have wanted to know," he said.
She looked at the table.
"Eleven days," she said.
"Eleven days," he said.
They sat with that.
Then she went back to the notebook. He went back to the desk.
---
Lesson eight: aspect markers.
At the end: "Your listening is ahead of your reading," he said.
"Is that common?"
"For people who learn in a place where the language is spoken, yes. You've been absorbing input for seventy-nine days."
She said: "Like a lot of things here — making explicit what was already implicit."
He looked at her. "Yes."
"Same time tomorrow?" she said.
"Same time tomorrow."
She put the notebook in the drawer.
He closed the lesson folder.
Log: Day 79. Ambient 13.3. Lesson 8: aspect markers. Her listening is ahead of her reading. Note: making explicit what was already implicit.
Eleven days.
He turned off the lamp.
He went to sleep.
