The morning of day ninety-four had the specific quality of a morning that was holding something he hadn't told anyone yet.
He had found the detail at eleven-forty the previous night — in the archived Traffic incident records, the raw incident notes rather than the formal report:
Entity behavioral assessment (pre-engagement): non-aggressive. Entity did not initiate contact. Entity appeared to be defending a position rather than attacking. Entity behavior consistent with protective rather than predatory motivation.
Then:
Entity neutralized at 0317. Casualties occurred prior to engagement, not during entity neutralization. Cause of casualties under separate investigation.
He had thought: the entity didn't cause the casualties.
He was telling Mien now.
He told her what he had found.
She listened. She looked at the window.
"It was protecting something," she said.
"That's what the incident notes suggest."
She was quiet for a moment. "And then Traffic neutralized it."
"Classified it as neutralized," he said. "But Thần is here."
She held the cup with both hands.
"The casualties happened before Traffic arrived," she said. "Not during the engagement."
"Yes."
"Thần didn't kill anyone."
He looked at the window.
"Based on the incident notes," he said. "Which say casualties occurred before the engagement. Something else caused the casualties. And then Traffic came and engaged Thần over whatever was left."
"What was it protecting?" she said.
"I don't know yet."
She looked at the window.
"Whatever it was," she said, "it's been grieving it for eight years."
He looked at the entity camera: Thần in its corner, ambient stable.
He thought: it's not alone anymore.
---
On day ninety-five, Thần wanted to go back to the 2218 site.
Mien came upstairs from the morning session and said: "It wants to go again."
"Does it need us to come?" he said.
She thought about that.
"I think it needs to try alone," she said. "The first time we were there with it, and it knew we were there, and that mattered. But now—" She paused. "I think it needs to know it can do it alone. Not that it prefers to. That it can."
He said: "You can maintain a low-level interface from here? Safety net."
"Yes. The anchor holds at distance."
He looked at the entity camera.
He thought: I told it the choice was its own.
"Tell it to go when it's ready," he said. "I'll monitor from here."
---
Thần left at fourteen-forty-seven.
He watched the sensor log as it moved through the building. He monitored the ambient: twelve point two. No spike. No anomaly. The suppression held.
At fifteen-twenty-two, Thần returned.
Thirty-five minutes. Less than the first visit.
Mien looked up from the notebook.
"It's different," she said. "The interface. The quality when it came back." She thought. "The first visit, the grief was still present. This time, something resolved. Like a decision made."
"What kind of decision?" he said.
"I don't know the content. Just the quality." She looked at the entity camera. "Like something that was facing backward has turned to face forward."
He thought: whatever Thần was holding, it's decided what to do with it.
He made the note: Thần: second 2218 visit, solo, 35 minutes. Return quality: decision made. Forward-facing.
---
The leadership intercept arrived at three-forty.
[Traffic Special Operations — Restricted: Pre-war entity protocol authorized. Scope: entities present in civilian zones prior to the Great Incursion. Phase 1: dossier compilation. Phase 2: assessment. Phase 3: action. Timeline: Phase 1 to complete within 30 days. Target identification ongoing. Priority sectors include all zones with historical anomaly readings in the past 24 months.]
He looked at each phrase.
Pre-war entity — entity that existed before the Great Incursion.
Civilian zones — residential, mixed-use, non-military areas.
Historical anomaly readings in the past 24 months — C-7 had anomaly readings. The flag existed.
Phase 3: action — he had a reasonable guess about what that meant.
30 days.
He sat with the transmission.
Mien qualified for this protocol. Thần qualified. C-7 had the flag.
He needed to process it before bringing it to Mien. Not because he was going to hide it — he had learned, and she had named the learning. But to be useful he needed to bring her information rather than panic.
He ran the analysis.
The current ambient was twelve point two — well below any detection threshold. No new flags possible. Phase 1 was dossier compilation, not active scanning. The question was whether the historical flag would pull C-7 into the compilation even without current readings.
Co Tham knew about C-7. Co Tham filed an observation, not an escalation. But a protocol-level directive from above his division head might override field judgment.
He thought: thirty days.
He stood up.
---
She was in the common area.
She read his expression when he came in.
"What is it?" she said.
He handed her the phone with the intercept.
She read it.
She was quiet.
She said: "Pre-war entity."
"Yes," he said.
She said: "That's me."
"Yes. And Thần."
She looked at the transmission.
She said: "You're worried about me."
It was not a question.
"Yes," he said.
She looked at the transmission.
"I know," she said. "I know you've been carrying this since you found it — processing it so you could be useful instead of just alarmed." She looked at him. "You might carry it for a little while, to think first, but you bring it."
He looked at the table.
"Yes," he said.
She was quiet for a moment.
"This is why I wouldn't want to be anywhere else," she said.
He looked at her.
"Because when you're worried, you tell me," she said. "You don't carry it alone." She looked at the transmission. "You weren't always like that."
He thought about "I was doing that before you arrived. That's what I'm saying."
"No," he said. "I wasn't."
She looked at him.
"We'll handle this," she said.
Not reassurance. The actual assessment of two people who knew what they had built.
He said: "Yes. We will."
She looked at the transmission.
"Let's build the picture," she said.
He pulled up the analysis.
They worked.
---
The analysis took an hour and a half.
C-7's anomaly flag history. Current ambient status. Co Tham's file. The partnership agreement. The transmission's language. What Phase 1 likely meant operationally.
She listened, asked questions, noted things.
"The historical flag is the main risk," she said when they finished.
"Yes. The current ambient is clear. But the compilation phase will pull historical data."
"And Co Tham knows about us specifically."
"Yes. He chose not to escalate. But a protocol-level directive changes his options."
She thought about that.
"What would Co Tham do?" she said.
He thought about Co Tham — "she fits here" and the nod at the gate and "she made the right choice."
"I don't know," he said. "He's been consistent with his own assessment. I don't know if he would hold to it under protocol pressure."
She was quiet.
"Thirty days until Phase 1 completes," he said. "That gives us time to build a response. But I need more information — what 'action' means, whether Phase 1 automatically triggers Phase 2, whether there's any exclusion mechanism."
She said: "I'll see what I can get through the interface. Thần has been in this district for eight years. It may know things we don't."
"Yes," he said. "Ask it."
She nodded.
The room held what it held.
He said: "Start with what Thần knows."
She said: "Tomorrow morning."
"Alright."
---
Log entry:
Day 95. Ambient 12.2. Thần: second 2218 visit, solo, decision quality on return. Leadership intercept: pre-war entity protocol, dossier compilation, 30 days. C-7: historical anomaly flag. Mien: pre-war entity, civilian zone — qualifies for protocol. Note: "when you're worried, you tell me. You don't carry it alone." — She's right. 30 days. Working the picture together.
---
That evening he made tea.
She said: "You're doing that thing. The making-tea thing. When you do something ordinary because the day has had something hard in it."
"Yes," he said.
She picked up the cup.
"I've been thinking about Thần," she said. "It made a decision today. The quality when it returned — like it was done grieving. Like it's ready to do something with what it has."
"Ask it tomorrow," he said.
"I will."
He drank his tea.
She drank her tea.
He thought: we have thirty days and two entities with histories in this city that we don't fully know yet. And we have each other.
He thought: that's where we start.
---
Day ninety-six. Ambient: twelve point one.
At the window, he said: "The lesson. Tonight. We shouldn't skip it."
"No," she said. "We shouldn't."
He looked at the window.
"Good," he said.
She looked at the window.
"I'm going to ask it about the 2218 incident," she said. "What actually happened."
"Whatever you receive," he said, "tell me. Even the parts you can't interpret."
"Yes," she said.
The morning had the weight of something building.
Not dread. The weight of a household that had been through hard things before and knew what it was to face something together.
Thirty days.
They would find out what Thần knew.
They would work the picture.
Together.
He went to work.
