On the fifth morning, Mien stood at the window for forty minutes.
Lam Uyen knew because he had checked the time when she first moved to stand there, out of the same reflex that made him note anything that changed in his environment, and when he checked again the number had moved forty minutes forward and she hadn't.
She wasn't looking at anything in particular. Or rather — she was looking at everything, in the methodical way that he recognized as something other than idle observation. The courtyard was active at this hour: residents heading to work, a few children being walked to the district education center two blocks over, the vegetable seller who set up at the corner every morning between seven and nine, the maintenance worker who checked the eastern gate on a schedule Lam Uyen had catalogued within his first month here.
Mien was cataloguing it now.
He could see it in the quality of her attention — the slight tracking movement when someone crossed from one side of her field of view to the other, the small pause when a routine was broken, the way her gaze returned to the same anchor points at intervals, building a baseline.
She was doing what he had done, in the first weeks here. Building a map of the ordinary so that anything extraordinary would register against it.
He took the second cup of tea he had made — he made two now, without thinking about it, the habit had formed somewhere in the last three days — and set it on the windowsill beside her. She picked it up without looking away from the courtyard.
He went back to the desk and the morning's administrative work.
The silence between them had changed. He had noticed it two days ago and then declined to analyze it, which was, he recognized, itself a form of analysis. It was no longer the silence of two people who didn't know each other. It was the silence of two people who had established that they didn't need to fill space with noise, which was different and, he found, easier to exist in than he had expected.
---
Mrs. Nam knocked at nine-fifteen, which was earlier than usual.
She was carrying a bundle of vegetables — the leafy kind, slightly wilted at the edges, which meant she'd bought them at the end-of-day discount the evening before and was now distributing them before they went off entirely. This was, Lam Uyen understood, a Mrs. Nam system for ensuring that people she had decided to feed actually got fed.
"I need to go to the market," she said, "but my back is bad this week. Can your girl come help carry?"
He was already formulating the refusal — logistical, impersonal, the kind that didn't invite negotiation — when Mien said, from the window: "Of course."
He looked at her.
She was looking back at him with the expression she used when she had made a decision and was informing him of it rather than asking permission. It was a look he was becoming familiar with. There was nothing defiant in it, nothing that invited the argument he might have made about cover story exposure and unnecessary risk. Just the calm certainty of someone who had weighed the options and arrived at a conclusion.
He held her gaze for two seconds.
"I'll come," he said.
Mrs. Nam looked between them with the expression of someone who had noticed something she found interesting and had decided not to comment on it at this particular moment. "Good," she said. "Twenty minutes."
---
The morning market was louder than the early-morning quiet Mien had seen before — a weekday crowd, more vendors, more of the particular texture of a neighborhood going about its business in the specific way of people who had learned to do so despite everything.
Mien walked beside Mrs. Nam and carried the basket.
Lam Uyen walked behind and watched her navigate it.
She didn't move through the market the way someone overwhelmed would move — carefully, minimizing contact, keeping to the edges. She moved through it the way someone taking measurements would: present, attentive, processing everything at a rate that looked, from the outside, like normal interest. She asked Mrs. Nam questions about prices. She noticed when a vendor's scale was slightly off and mentioned it quietly, in a tone that suggested she wasn't certain but thought it was worth noting. Mrs. Nam checked, confirmed it, and negotiated accordingly.
"She has good eyes," Mrs. Nam told him, at a volume that Mien, three steps ahead, could almost certainly hear.
"Yes," he said.
He watched Mien pause at a stall selling secondhand tools — nothing she needed, just looking — and then move on. Watched her stop to let an elderly man with a cart pass, reading his trajectory before he was close enough that courtesy required it. Watched her look at the faces of the people around her with the particular attention of someone trying to understand what it meant to be a person in this place and time.
She was building a life from the outside in. Starting with the observable facts and working toward the interior.
The basket was nearly full when they reached the far end of the market and turned back.
It was on the return that Mien stopped.
Not because something blocked her path. Not because Mrs. Nam had stopped. She simply stopped walking, the way something stops when its attention is captured completely, and looked at the wall to her left.
Lam Uyen was beside her in two steps — the movement automatic, reading absence-of-threat as quickly as he read threat.
There was no threat. There was a notice posted on the wall.
Official format, district seal at the top, the logo of an organization in the upper right corner: a circle bisected by a blade. Below the logo, the name in clean block letters: TRAFFIC DEMON SUPPRESSION UNIT. Below that, an announcement of an upcoming area operation in the southern districts.
He read it in about four seconds. Standard public notice. He had probably walked past six of them in the last month without registering them as significant.
Mien was looking at the logo.
Just the logo, specifically — the circle and the blade, not the text below it. Her fingers had tightened around the basket handle. He could see the slight whitening at the knuckles, involuntary, the kind of physical tell that happened faster than conscious control.
Then she looked away, adjusted the basket in her hand, and kept walking.
He stayed a half-step longer, looking at the notice. Then he followed.
Mrs. Nam hadn't noticed the pause. She was talking about the price of winter squash.
---
That evening, after dinner, he pulled up the district information network and looked up Traffic.
Public record: Traffic Demon Suppression Unit, private organization, operating licenses in eleven districts, certified for B-rank and above engagements. Funding: district contracts and private arrangement. Leadership: not publicly listed. Forty-three confirmed B-rank eliminations in the past eighteen months, seven A-rank engagements with positive outcomes. No complaints on record.
Clean record. Well-resourced. Moving into adjacent districts.
He closed the app.
[System note: Traffic unit activity confirmed within 3km radius. Two B-rank units in area eliminated or captured by unidentified party within past 48 hours.]
He set the phone down and looked at Mien across the room, who was sitting on the sofa reading the cover story document she had found in the drawer. She looked up and found him looking.
He looked back at his phone.
---
Two in the morning.
He was asleep when the sound reached him — not loud, not distressed, just present in the silence in a way that his calibrated awareness flagged as something new. He was through the door in the way he moved when the System flagged a perimeter alert: completely awake within two steps.
No alert. No demon.
Mien was sitting on the sofa with her knees drawn up to her chest, arms wrapped around them. The room was dark — she hadn't turned on any light. Her eyes were open, fixed on some middle distance that didn't correspond to anything in the room.
He sat down.
Not in the chair across the room. On the other end of the sofa, leaving a reasonable distance between them but in the same space, in the dark, which was where she was.
He didn't turn on a light. He didn't ask if she was all right. He waited.
After a while she said: "I dreamed about fire."
He didn't say anything.
"Not ordinary fire." Her voice was even, the flatness of someone describing something they're still processing. "Fire that I made. And what I burned with it..." She stopped.
"You don't have to continue," he said.
A pause. Then: "You're not curious?"
"I am."
"But?"
"But not right now."
She turned her head slightly and looked at him in the dark. He was aware of the look the way he was aware of the silver in her eyes that first morning — a thing that was happening that he was not filing under lighting effects.
"That's an unusual answer," she said.
"It's an unusual situation."
She was quiet for a moment. Then she turned back to look at the window.
They sat in the dark for a while. The city made its nighttime sounds — distant, familiar, the specific acoustic signature of a city that never fully went quiet because going quiet required a kind of safety it hadn't had in years.
He was aware of the distance between them on the sofa.
Then it changed.
Not dramatically — she didn't lean over, didn't reach for anything. She simply shifted, very slightly, settling into a different arrangement, and in doing so her head came to rest against his shoulder. Not placed there, not decided — arrived, the way things arrive when a body finds the nearest stable point and stops.
He went still.
He was very good at being still. Three years of operational discipline had made stillness a practiced thing, available on demand. He applied it now and it worked in the sense that he did not move, and did not look down, and the muscle in his jaw tightened once and released and he looked at the window and remained present in the way he was present in rooms where things required his attention.
This required his attention.
He stayed very still and looked at the window and did not think about the weight of her head on his shoulder, and did not think about the forty percent notation in the System's contract record, and did not think about the cover story document filled with unnecessary details for a life she didn't have yet.
He was, by this point, aware that not-thinking about something and thinking about it were not as different as he would have preferred.
Her breathing evened out after a while. He waited until it had been even long enough that he was reasonably certain she was asleep, and then sat in the dark a while longer, because moving would require deciding to move, and that was a different thing from simply being where he was.
Eventually he carefully — very carefully, in the way you do something when you are being honest with yourself about how carefully you are doing it — shifted so that she could lie down rather than sit, and stood up, and went back to his room.
---
In the morning she didn't mention it.
Neither did he.
He made breakfast. She helped, standing at the counter doing exactly what he indicated without being told twice, asking questions about the cooking that were genuinely curious. He learned she had opinions about the ratio of fish sauce to lime in the dipping sauce and was willing to defend them. He adjusted the ratio. It was, marginally, better.
He was on his third perimeter check when the System updated.
[Traffic unit activity: confirmed within 3km, updated. Two additional B-rank captures recorded in past 24 hours. Pattern: captures concentrated in eastern sector. Trajectory suggests systematic sweep moving northwest. Estimated arrival in C-7 adjacent area: 12-18 days.]
He stopped walking.
Twelve to eighteen days.
He looked back through the booth window. Mien was sitting at the desk with the cover story document, adding something in the margin with the pen he kept in the cup beside the monitor — a small annotation, neat and deliberate, in the handwriting she had developed entirely within the past five days.
He watched her for a moment.
She knew about Traffic now. He had told her the edges of it: the timeline, the eastern sector, the B-rank pattern. He had not told her what Traffic specialized in finding. Had not told her about the logo and the white knuckles. Had not told her that an SS-rank entity at 2.7% capacity was exactly the kind of thing an organization certified for B-rank-and-above would be very interested in.
He had not told her because he was not ready to change what the mornings were.
That was the honest version.
He put the System alert in the category he kept for things that were not urgent and were also not ignorable, and continued his perimeter check.
The eastern sector. Moving northwest.
Toward them.
This morning was breakfast and the cover story in the drawer and the note about the eastern sector filed where it needed to be filed.
This morning was still this.
He picked up his pace and finished the check, and went back inside, and sat down across from her, and the day continued the way it had learned to continue.
Twelve to eighteen days.
