Two hundred years ago, General Ronveya Dacre held a battlefield line against the Hollow Tide so her soldiers could live. She never left it. Now she wakes in the body of Maelis Thornwick, the exhausted owner of a failing orchard cafe in Sunbrook Vale, a peaceful valley built over that very battleground, where the fruit has opinions and the rent is three months overdue.

Mae has her memories, her instincts, and no idea how to rest. She runs the cafe like a campaign: pastries arranged in formation, hens posted as sentries, invoices treated as enemy intelligence. Then Orrin Vael arrives, a meticulous Guild assessor with ink-stained fingers and ninety days to decide whether her cafe survives. Bound by a residency clause that forces him to stay under her roof, he is supposed to stay neutral. Instead, he keeps finding reasons to fix her hinges, defend her ledgers, and stay for dinner.

As a found family gathers around the cafe and the dormant apple tree in the orchard begins to stir, buried truths surface. The tree remembers a wish, an old ledger hides a forgotten clause, and a battle fought two centuries ago refuses to stay in the past. Meanwhile, a Guild overseer quietly collects the valley's debts, and Orrin's loyalty to the rules is tested against his loyalty to her.

Both Mae and Orrin have spent their lives carrying everything alone. To save the cafe, and perhaps each other, they must learn the one thing neither lifetime taught them: how to put the burden down and let someone else hold the line.
