The bounty notification had been in the System's survivor network for four days before it produced organized pursuit.
Do-yun had been tracking the probability of this — not formally, not as a calculated risk assessment she had shared with anyone, but in the background way she tracked most things that had a predictable trajectory: the same way she had tracked the Dark Night wave, the way she tracked the mana density in districts they had not yet visited, the way she tracked the gradual social recalibration of every new survivor they encountered. The bounty had been out there since day two. The system had been advertising a target. People who were afraid and uncertain and had been given a formalized permission to act on their fear were eventually going to use it.
The only question had been timing.
The answer turned out to be the morning of day twelve.
She heard them before she saw them — or registered them in the mana-sight before the group had visual confirmation, which amounted to the same thing. Five people, all with the elevated mana-signatures of awakened survivors, moving in a coordinated formation through the residential district's main arterial street. Not the loose movement of a group navigating together. The tight, deliberate patterning of people who had a specific destination and had discussed how to approach it.
She said, quietly, to Shin-woo: "Five. Awakened. Coming from the west. They're in formation."
His instability reading moved from sixty-eight to seventy-two in the time it took her to say it.
"Formation," he said.
"Yes."
He had understood, as she had, that formation meant intent rather than coincidence. He turned to orient himself toward the western approach and she watched his weight redistribute — not into attack readiness, she noted, but into the more contained stance of someone who was waiting to see what a situation was before deciding what kind of situation it was.
This was progress. She filed it.
The group reached the intersection.
Their leader was a man in his late twenties with the particular quality of movement that she had come to associate with combat ability that had existed before the Unreal event — not just awakened, but trained. He moved the way Jeong-su moved, with the economy of someone whose body had been taught to be efficient. He had two people positioned at his flanks and two at the rear, and he stopped the group at the intersection boundary and looked across at Shin-woo with the professional thoroughness of someone assessing a target.
"System notification, class B bounty," the man said. His voice was even. Not aggressive — operational. He was someone who had decided this was a task rather than a conflict. "We're here for the dark energy user designated as Stage Boss. Compliance or elimination."
Shin-woo did not move.
Do-yun was watching his instability reading: seventy-two. Stable. He was not escalating.
Behind them, she heard Yu-jin get the group moving — a quiet repositioning, putting distance between the confrontation and the non-combat members. Ha-rin. Jeong-su. Mi-rae. The motions were subtle enough that the bounty group hadn't responded to them yet.
Shin-woo said, in Korean that continued to improve in precision: "If you've read the notification carefully, you understand the System designates based on energy type rather than behavior history."
The leader looked at him.
"The designation," Shin-woo continued, with the flat precision that was his register for things he had thought about carefully, "was issued on the first day. You are now on day twelve. If the Stage Boss designation were accurate, there would be a clear pattern of survivor casualties attributable to me. I would like you to tell me how many of those casualties you can cite."
A pause.
The leader had not expected a logical argument. Do-yun read it in the fractional delay before he responded: he had expected either aggression or flight. He had a framework for both. He did not have a framework for a target who was calmly asking for evidence.
"The System —" he started.
"The System designates," Shin-woo said. "I'm asking what you know."
Do-yun stepped forward.
Not past Shin-woo — beside him. At his right, close enough that the choice was legible. She had thought about whether to do this and had decided that legibility was the point. If what Yu-jin said was true — that her choices had personal stakes — then this was one of those choices, made with clear eyes.
"I can tell you what I know," she said to the leader.
He looked at her. His assessment was fast — person, female, appears non-combat, walking stick, no visible weapon — and she let him complete it before continuing.
"Twelve days," she said. "Fourteen cleared Stages, including two class-A configurations. Four Dark Night events. One Relic Train activation. Two high-tier entity engagements in residential zones that would have produced significant civilian casualties without intervention." She kept her voice in the register of information rather than argument. "Total survivor casualties attributable to the person standing next to me: zero. Total survivors protected, including your group's territory based on the Stage pattern you've been in: indirectly, many."
The leader looked at her steadily. "You're his —"
"I'm the person with the best available data," she said. "I have an ability that gives me real-time energy readings and a twelve-day operational record. What I'm telling you is the record, not an argument."
The man at the leader's left flank said something low to the leader. She could not hear it. The leader's posture shifted incrementally — not retreat, but the small adjustments of someone who was reconsidering the parameters of a decision.
"The bounty is still active," the leader said.
"The bounty is a System designation," she said. "You've been in this situation long enough to know the difference between what the System designates and what serves survivor interests. If those were always the same thing, you would have a much simpler twelve days than I suspect you've had."
Silence.
Shin-woo had not moved throughout this exchange. He had not deployed the dark energy, had not shifted into any posture that would read as preparation for conflict. He was standing still and letting her speak and letting himself be looked at, and she could see — in the steadiness of his instability reading at seventy-two, not climbing — that this was a choice rather than passivity.
The leader said, finally: "We'll stand down. For now." A pause that contained conditions. "If the pattern holds."
"The pattern will hold," she said. "Because it's not a performance."
The bounty group withdrew — not quickly, with the measured pacing of people who were repositioning rather than retreating, maintaining face while changing direction. She tracked them through the mana-sight until they turned a corner three blocks west and their signatures moved out of her comfortable reading range.
She exhaled.
Shin-woo turned to look at her.
His instability reading: seventy-two. Not sixty-five, not the recent low. Still elevated. But it had not climbed during the confrontation, which meant he had held something in place that his readings suggested he had cause to release.
She said: "Your reading didn't go up."
"I was aware of that," he said.
"That's harder than it looks."
He was quiet for a moment. "You told them the pattern would hold."
"Yes."
"That was a commitment made on my behalf."
"It was an accurate statement about the data I have." She met his approximate eyeline. "Was it wrong?"
A pause. "No."
"Then it was accurate, not presumptuous." She paused. "I'll let you know if I'm ever uncertain about the distinction."
He looked at her with the recalibrating look — the one that meant he was updating something. She let him update it without commentary.
Yu-jin returned with the group from the repositioning, and the quiet debrief that followed had the tone of people who had watched something unfamiliar happen and were still working out what to make of it. Jeong-su said nothing but nodded at Do-yun once, with the compact acknowledgment of someone who spoke primarily through action.
Ha-rin came to her side and said, almost too quiet for anyone else: "That was the scariest thing I've watched that wasn't actually a Stage."
"I know," Do-yun said. "I was there."
"You didn't seem scared."
"I was," she said. "I was scared and I did it anyway. Those aren't exclusive."
Ha-rin absorbed this with the particular quality of someone who was filing it for later reference.
They moved on. The group found the next section of safe route and walked it, and the city moved around them in its altered rhythms, and somewhere in the middle of the second block Do-yun became aware that Shin-woo had adjusted his position — he was now behind her and to her right, covering her rear exposure in the formation, a position that was technically optimal for a group this size but which he had not occupied in quite this way before.
She did not comment on this.
She just kept walking.
At the edge of the residential district, as they were identifying the next shelter option, the figure appeared on the upper floor of a building across the street — not threatening, not hiding, but watching with a quality of attention that she had learned to associate with the Chronicler. She caught the mana-signature before she caught anything visual: the particular frequency of something that was neither fully human nor fully System, that sat in the space between the two.
He did not come down. He did not signal.
But she saw him look not at Shin-woo, as he usually did, but at her. And she heard — or registered through some capacity of the mana-sight that she was still working to fully understand — a phrase that was not quite sound and not quite thought:
*The anchor is waking up. The System has noticed.*
She looked away and said nothing and filed it with the same precision she filed everything.
Later.
