The supply run was Do-yun's idea, which meant she was the one who had assessed the risk and found it acceptable.
She had been wrong before — not often, but the maintenance level Stage had taught her that her risk assessment could be confident and incomplete simultaneously, that there were categories of threat she had not yet learned to account for. She had updated. She had built new parameters into her assessment framework. She had thought, going into the eastern residential district with Ha-rin and Jeong-su, that she had accounted for the major variables.
She had not accounted for the bounty group having split.
She found out approximately forty seconds before they emerged from the building entrance they had been watching: the mana signatures of three awakened survivors converging on the alley from two directions simultaneously, a pincer approach she registered in the flows before the movement was visible. She had time to tell Ha-rin and Jeong-su *don't run, stay still* before the three people were blocking both ends of the alley.
Three on three was not obviously bad odds when one of your three was Jeong-su.
Two things made it bad odds: the awakened abilities of the group's members, which Do-yun could now read clearly in the mana-sight as combat-configured, and the fact that the group's objective was not to fight but to capture. Fighting to kill and fighting to capture were different problems, and capturing was, in some ways, harder to defend against.
They were not here for Do-yun, Ha-rin, or Jeong-su.
They were here for what those three would bring.
Do-yun understood this in the first fifteen seconds, from the way the group positioned itself — maintaining a non-lethal pressure, keeping Jeong-su occupied without escalating, directing their attention specifically to Do-yun rather than any of the others. One of them stepped toward her with the particular economy of someone executing a prepared plan.
"We don't want to hurt anyone," he said. The syntax of a statement that contained a conditional.
"I understand," Do-yun said.
"We need him to come here."
"I know."
Ha-rin made a small sound behind her — not quite a protest, the sound of someone who understood the situation and did not like it but was doing what had been asked of her, which was staying still.
Jeong-su was occupied at the alley's other end — she could hear it in the sounds of engagement, controlled and not yet critical but not nothing. He was managing two people, which was at the edge of what he could manage with his current ability level without going fully offensive, which he was clearly trying not to do.
Do-yun looked at the person in front of her and thought: *the System overlay shows his ability type as force-suppression. He can hold someone in place without physical contact. That's how they're going to keep me still without hurting me.*
She thought: *if I let him activate, I won't be able to move. But if I resist before activation, Jeong-su's situation gets worse.*
She thought: *Shin-woo is eight hundred meters west. His reading is seventy percent, which means he's not in a Stage and is probably in transit.*
She thought: *he will come. The question is whether I should let that be the plan.*
She thought: *I don't want to be the plan. I want to be the person who managed the situation. But I also know the difference between wanting something and it being possible.*
The force-suppression activated around her — she felt it as a pressure, not painful, the mana equivalent of being held in place by something that had no physical substance. She could move her head. She could speak. She could think. She could not move her feet.
"Okay," she said.
The man looked at her with mild surprise — he had expected more resistance.
"I want to be clear," she said, "that I'm not consenting to this. I'm acknowledging that I currently cannot prevent it." She kept her voice even. "There's a difference."
He blinked.
"Also," she said, "the person you're trying to draw here is going to know what happened. You should think carefully about what you want the next sixty seconds to look like."
The man said: "We just need to talk to him."
"Then you should have sent a message."
At the alley's other end, she heard the quality of Jeong-su's engagement change — he had been managing, and now he was no longer managing in quite the same way. The two people he was dealing with had escalated slightly, possibly in response to a signal from their colleague.
Shin-woo's instability reading: seventy-five.
He had felt something.
She did not know how this worked — the connection that the Chronicler had called an anchor and that the System's notation had called *connection depth exceeding standard parameters.* She only knew that in the past two days she had begun to notice: when something happened to her that elevated her own mana-output, his reading responded. Not dramatically, not with precision. But it responded.
Seventy-eight.
He was moving. She could not track direction at this range, but the rate of change in his reading suggested he was moving toward something rather than through something.
She said to the man in front of her: "He's coming. This is still a moment when you could make a different choice about how this goes."
The man looked uncertain in the way of someone who had been competent in the planning phase and was now encountering the execution phase, which was different.
"You seem very calm," he said.
"I'm not," she said. "I'm scared. But I've had eleven days of practice at being scared and doing something useful with it."
Shin-woo arrived three minutes later.
She did not see him arrive — the force-suppression kept her oriented forward — but she felt the change in the alley's atmosphere, the particular compression of air that happened when a large amount of controlled dark energy entered a confined space. She heard the man in front of her make a small sound. She heard the two people at the other end go very still.
Shin-woo's instability reading: eighty. The run had cost him, and the arrival had cost him more. The dark energy was elevated above maintenance.
But he did not deploy it.
She heard his footsteps — she had learned to identify his footsteps from everyone else's in the group, the particular weight distribution — cross the alley toward her. She heard him assess the situation in the one-second silence that followed his arrival.
He said, in Korean, to the man with the force-suppression: "Release her."
Two words. His voice was the controlled register of maximum effort suppression, the register she had come to know meant he was holding something back, and the something was not nothing.
The force-suppression dropped.
She moved immediately — not away from the situation but to a better position within it, orienting herself so she could read both the mana-flows and the physical arrangement of the people present. Old habit from twelve days of field work.
Shin-woo was three meters to her left. She could see his mana-field in the overlay: dark energy at elevated maintenance, not deployed, but present in the way something was present when it was being held rather than contained.
The man with the force-suppression was looking at Shin-woo with the expression of someone who had expected either the aggression of a monster or the caution of someone trying to avoid conflict, and was encountering neither. Shin-woo was simply standing in the alley with eighty percent instability and not attacking anyone.
"You wanted to talk," Shin-woo said.
The man blinked.
"She said you sent people to take her rather than a message," Shin-woo said. "So I assume you have a reason. Say it."
The man said something — she caught the gist of it from the tone and the words she understood — about the bounty, about the System's designation, about the group's need to make decisions that protected their members.
Shin-woo listened. He did not interrupt.
When the man finished, Shin-woo said: "The bounty is the System's tool. It uses fear to make people do what the System needs. What the System needs is for me to be a threat. If you eliminate me, the System gets what it needs." A pause. "If you're asking whether I intend to be what the System says I am: no. I've spent twelve days not being that. I can spend twelve more days not being it. The evidence is available to you if you want it."
Silence.
Jeong-su had disengaged from the two people at the other end of the alley — they had stepped back, and the fight, such as it had been, was over without conclusion.
The man with the force-suppression looked at Do-yun. Then at Shin-woo. Then at the alley generally, with the look of someone who was doing arithmetic and arriving at an answer he had not started with.
"We'll be watching," he said, finally.
"I know," Shin-woo said.
The group left. Not quickly — with the measured pacing of people who had made a decision and were executing it without giving up any more than necessary. She tracked them out of reading range through the mana-sight.
Jeong-su came over, assessed her with the compact efficiency that was his mode: "Injury?"
"No," she said. "Force-suppression. Not harmful."
He nodded and went to check Ha-rin.
Shin-woo was three meters away, looking at the mouth of the alley where the group had exited. His instability reading: seventy-seven. Dropping, now that the immediate situation had resolved. She watched it drop: seventy-five, seventy-three, seventy-one.
He turned to look at her.
The looking lasted a moment longer than assessment required.
She said: "Your first reflex when you got here was to look for me."
He did not answer this immediately.
"Threat identification," he said. "I needed to know the configuration."
"You looked at me first," she said. "The threats were at both ends of the alley. You looked at me first."
He was quiet.
She did not press it. She had said it because it was something she had noticed and she tried to say the things she noticed, and she had said it with the particular care she used for things that mattered. What he did with it was his.
He came to her — not with the speed of an emergency but with the deliberateness of a choice — and checked her wrists where the force-suppression had been most concentrated. The check was professional and not slow, his fingers at her pulse point and then at the inside of her wrist where the mana-field pressure would have been highest.
He was making sure there was no residual damage.
He held her wrist for one second longer than the check required.
Then he released it and stepped back.
"You said to say something before making judgment calls in the field," she said.
"You said you'd try," he said.
"I had about eight seconds," she said. "I didn't have a better option."
"I know." A pause. "Are you all right."
The question in the form of the question he used — flat, ending with period-energy rather than question-mark energy, the form that said *I'm asking but I already know part of the answer* — landed differently from the same words in anyone else's voice.
"Yes," she said. "I'm all right."
Ha-rin appeared from the far end of the alley, slightly pale, with the expression of someone who had just used up a day's worth of adrenaline in twelve minutes. She looked at both of them with the quiet perceptiveness she had been developing and said nothing, which was the right call.
They gathered the supplies they had come for — they had, after all that, actually gotten the supplies — and moved out of the alley and back into the altered morning of Hanseo.
The Chronicler was waiting at the district's edge.
Not blocking the road. Standing to the side of it, with the particular air of someone who had been waiting a specific length of time for a specific person to arrive. He looked at Do-yun, not at Shin-woo.
"Reality Anchor," he said. Not as a title. As a category of thing.
"I've been called that before," she said.
"Yes. By me." He paused. "But you didn't have all the information then. I need to give you the rest of it." He looked between her and Shin-woo. "Both of you, actually. The next part requires both of you to understand it."
Do-yun looked at Shin-woo.
His instability reading: sixty-nine. Back toward the recent baseline. His expression was unreadable to her partial vision, but she could read his body: alert, not hostile, the posture of someone who had decided to hear what was being offered before deciding what it was.
"Tell us," she said.
