The merged territory had settled overnight into something that was neither Hanseo nor not-Hanseo but a third thing that belonged to both.
Do-yun moved through it in the morning with the particular awareness of someone who was building a new spatial model in real time: her acoustic map was only partly useful here, the echo-signatures of the streets she had learned disrupted by the merged architecture's different materials and different proportions. The mana-sight gave her more, and she used it, integrating the two layers into something that functioned as navigation even if it was not the clean map she was accustomed to.
Shin-woo knew the territory better than anyone.
This was the stated reason for the morning assessment: the merged section could serve as a more defensible base of operations for the Class S preparation if it could be verified as stable, and Shin-woo's knowledge of the original structure gave them an assessment advantage they would be foolish not to use. He led the group through the narrow corridors of merged stone-and-concrete with the particular ease of someone navigating from memory — not looking for landmarks but knowing where they were without looking.
She watched him move through his own past.
She had watched him move through spaces he knew for ten years, had watched the particular economy of motion that came from deep familiarity, the way his body went somewhere without the conscious overhead of wayfinding. Watching it now, from beside him rather than from the outside of a dream, was different. She was inside the picture instead of outside it. The difference was significant in ways she was still categorizing.
The echo appeared at the northeastern corner, in the section that corresponded to the secondary garrison quarters.
She read it in the mana-flows before anyone could see it: a concentration of residual emotional energy that had coalesced into form, not the hostile configuration of a dungeon entity but the particular passive architecture of something that had stayed because it had not finished. The Chronicler had mentioned echoes in passing — she had filed the information without expecting to encounter one this quickly.
The form took shape as she watched: human-shaped, dressed in the uniform she recognized from her years of observation, holding the particular posture of someone in the middle of something they had been doing when the world stopped allowing them to continue.
Shin-woo saw it at the same moment she registered the full signature.
He stopped walking.
The group stopped behind him.
Do-yun read his instability in the next ten seconds: seventy-two to seventy-nine. Fast. The echo's presence was activating something in the curse's sensitivity — not the hostile reactivity of the curse-reactive entities, but something older, quieter, the way a wound responds to specific pressure.
She knew who this was. She had watched the campaign in which Shin-woo had lost this person. She had recorded the aftermath with the flat language she used for things she could not afford to let herself feel too directly, and the flatness of the language had not prevented her from understanding what it had cost him.
Yu-jin started to move forward — the trained response to an unidentified entity in a secured zone. She said, quietly: "Don't. It's not a threat."
He stopped.
The echo was standing in the approximate center of what had been the secondary quarters' main common area, in a posture she recognized: the particular formal stance of a military report, the body positioned for address, the hands at the sides. The echo was not moving. It was simply present in the shape of someone who had been in the middle of something and was still in the middle of it.
Shin-woo looked at it.
She watched his face from the side — or watched the mana-quality around him, the instability reading, the small signatures of someone managing a significant internal response with the external presentation of absolute stillness. She had seen this many times. She knew what it looked like from outside.
The echo's mouth moved. No sound. The shape of words, the gesture of address — the particular gesture she had observed this soldier use many times in the years of watching the garrison, the dip of the head that accompanied formal reporting to a commanding officer.
Still reporting. Still at his post.
Do-yun moved.
Not to intervene — she had no mechanism for intervening in what was happening. She moved to stand beside Shin-woo, at his right, at the particular distance they had established as the workable one. She did not look at him. She looked at the echo.
She said, very quietly: "I remember him. From the third campaign year. I saw the reports he filed — he had a particular way of noting the weather conditions first, before anything else. He thought the weather was always operationally relevant."
Shin-woo was very still.
The echo continued its silent posture. The mouth moving. The gesture of address.
"He was right about the weather," Shin-woo said. His voice was the controlled register, but the control was doing more work than usual. "The third campaign's supply failure was partially weather-related. He had flagged it in every report for six weeks before the failure occurred."
"I know," she said. "I read those reports when I was building the record. He was thorough."
"He was," Shin-woo said.
The echo held its form for another moment — the particular quality of something that had been seen and was ready to release. She watched the mana-signature shift: the residual emotional energy that had constituted the form beginning to dissipate, not violently but gradually, the way a held breath releases.
The echo faded.
Not disappeared — faded, the form losing its density, the mana-signature dispersing back into the ambient energy of the merged territory. She tracked it until the signature was no longer distinguishable from the background.
The northeastern corner was empty.
Shin-woo stood in the space where the echo had been for a long moment. She stood beside him. The group was behind them, quiet in the particular way of people who had witnessed something they did not have language for and had decided to wait for language to arrive before speaking.
At some point — she could not have said exactly when — his head moved. A small movement, very slight, the angle of his head changing in a direction toward her. Not falling — not the collapse of someone who had run out of structural integrity. A lean. A deliberate, very small movement toward the person standing beside him, until his temple rested against her shoulder.
One second. Two.
He straightened.
No one in the group said anything.
Shin-woo continued through the merged territory as though the interruption had not occurred. She fell into step beside him, and the group followed, and the assessment continued with the operational efficiency that was the only available response to a situation that was too large for any other frame.
At the far edge of the merged territory, the Chronicler was waiting.
"There will be more," the Chronicler said, without preamble. "Echoes form in places where significant unresolved events have occurred. As the merger deepens, more will manifest." He looked at Shin-woo. "The northern garrison has many such events."
"I know," Shin-woo said.
"The echoes are not dangerous," the Chronicler said. "But encountering them is — not neutral."
"No," Shin-woo said. "It's not neutral."
The Chronicler looked at Do-yun. "The mana-quality around the two of you has changed since the Convergence Dungeon. The integration has deepened. The anchor now — reads differently." He paused. "I wanted you to know that."
She filed this information and did not ask the follow-up questions she had. They would wait.
Shin-woo's instability reading: seventy-four. From the seventy-nine of the echo encounter — the falling was happening without her active intervention. She noted the rate of fall, which was different from how it had been three weeks ago. The management was becoming easier, and the evidence of it was visible in the numbers if she read them across time rather than in isolation.
She had been reading them across time.
Yu-jin appeared at her left. He said, very quietly, not directing this at anyone specifically: "The soldier in the echo. He was important to you." Not a question — a statement he was giving her the option to not respond to.
She thought about whether to respond.
"He filed weather observations," she said. "First in every report. Shin-woo used to read them before the operational section."
Yu-jin was quiet for a moment.
"That's a specific thing to know," he said.
"I had ten years," she said.
"I know," he said. "I'm still calibrating what that means."
She thought about what it meant — the ten years, the records, the echo of a soldier who had reported the weather first and had been right about its operational relevance. She thought about the form of witness that preserved things long enough to be said. She thought about Shin-woo's temple against her shoulder for two seconds in a corridor in a merged territory at the edge of the world.
She thought: *the record includes this now.*
She thought: *it should.*
