The mana-map was not being updated.
Do-yun was sitting at the table where she always updated the mana-map, with the tools she always used to update it, in the time of day she always updated it, and the map was not being updated because her attention was not on the map.
Her attention was on the quality of pressure that had lasted two seconds in a corridor in the merged territory.
This was not, she told herself, information that required this level of processing. She had received and processed more significant events in the past twenty-two days. The echo encounter, the Audience Chamber, the night of the rain recording. All of those had been significant, and she had processed them with the efficiency she applied to significant things, and she had continued.
She was not continuing.
The mana-map waited patiently. The ambient flows in the district cycled through their late-morning patterns. Somewhere in the building, someone was moving between rooms — she tracked it through sound without attending to it, the passive spatial awareness that ran continuously below her conscious processing.
She was thinking about two seconds.
Not in the way she usually thought about things — the systematic processing, the model-building, the cross-referencing of new information against existing data. She was thinking about it the way you thought about something that did not want to be processed but simply to be held. Something that was not going to resolve into a conclusion. Something that was the kind of thing it was, and was asking only to be that.
She let it be that for a while.
Ha-rin's footsteps — she had memorized Ha-rin's footsteps weeks ago, the particular light tread with the slight hesitation that characterized her approach to any space where she was unsure of her welcome. She heard Ha-rin come to the door of the room and stop.
"Come in," she said.
Ha-rin came in and sat across from her at the table — not in the adjacent chair but the one across, which was the social chair rather than the working chair. She was not coming to help with the map. She was coming to talk.
Do-yun waited.
"Do you know what he thinks of you," Ha-rin said.
Not what she had expected.
"I have a model," Do-yun said carefully.
"No," Ha-rin said. "I mean — do you know? Like you know it, not like you've built a framework for it."
She thought about this distinction. Ha-rin was seventeen and had been making precise distinctions about the nature of knowledge since the underground market. She had learned to take the distinctions seriously.
"Maybe not," she said.
"I watch people," Ha-rin said. "It's what I do when I don't know what else to do. I've been watching both of you since the first night in the building." She paused. "He doesn't look at you like he looks at things he's assessing. He looks at you like he's counting — making sure you're still there."
Do-yun held this.
"When you come back from somewhere," Ha-rin continued, "every time, before he looks at anything else — he checks that you're there. Not obviously. But I've been watching and I see it every time." She paused. "I thought you should know."
Do-yun said: "Why?"
Ha-rin looked at her with the perceptive directness she had developed over the past weeks.
"Because I think you know what you feel and you're not sure if you're allowed to," Ha-rin said. "And I thought evidence from an outside observer might help."
She sat with this.
She had been thinking, since the morning's echo encounter and the two seconds in the corridor, about the question of whether she was allowed to. Not in the moral sense — she had resolved, weeks ago, the question of whether caring was wrong. In the practical sense. Whether she had the right to let something this large exist in her life, given that she was a person who had no real practice at it. Whether wanting something and being capable of sustaining it were the same category of thing.
"What do I feel," she said. Not to Ha-rin specifically — to the room, to the question itself.
"You already know," Ha-rin said. "I can tell by the way you asked."
She did know.
She had known for weeks, possibly longer — possibly since before the Unreal event, which was a thought she was not going to follow all the way to its end right now. She had known and she had been processing it as something that required qualification: *I feel this but it might be projection, I feel this but I should be careful about accuracy, I feel this but it's possible I'm motivated by something other than what I think.*
The qualifications were not wrong. They had served a real function — they had helped her maintain accuracy when accuracy was necessary.
But accuracy was not the only function feelings served. Feelings were also data. The feeling she had been qualifying for weeks was data that she had been consistently trying to downgrade, and the data kept being what it was despite the downgrading.
She let it be what it was.
For the first time, without qualification, she let it be what it was.
Ha-rin was quiet in the particular way of someone who understood they had done the thing they came to do and was now giving the other person space.
After a moment, Do-yun said: "Thank you."
"For what," Ha-rin said.
"For watching carefully enough to see it. And for thinking it was worth saying."
Ha-rin nodded and stood to go. At the door she paused and said: "He trusts you. That person — the person who doesn't trust anyone — he trusts you. I don't think he fully understands how rare that is for him. But I think you do." She paused. "I thought that was worth saying too."
She left.
Do-yun sat with the things that had been said and the things that had been held and the particular quality of an afternoon that had become something different from the afternoon it had started as.
Shin-woo's footsteps. She tracked them before she decided to track them — the automatic registration of the particular weight and distribution she had memorized in the first week. Coming through the building, through the corridor, into the room.
He saw her not working on the map.
"Stage?"
"No," she said.
He sat at the adjacent chair — not the working position, slightly to her left rather than across. The position he had been sitting in increasingly over the past week, the one that was adjacent without being inside her space.
He looked at the map she was not working on.
She thought: *I know what I feel. I am not going to do anything with it today. But I am done pretending I don't know.*
Shin-woo did not ask what she was thinking about. He had learned to read the difference between productive silence and the other kind, and this was the other kind — or he had recognized that she was not working on the map and had decided not to require an explanation.
At some point, without deciding to, he moved his chair incrementally closer to the table. Incrementally closer to her.
Not dramatically. The adjustment a person made when they were settling into a space more thoroughly than they had been.
She noticed it and did not say anything about it, which was, she thought, the correct response.
The afternoon continued. The map eventually got updated, because practical requirements did not suspend for internal developments. She updated it with the efficiency she had built over twenty-two days and Shin-woo provided tactical context at two points where her mana-reading needed interpretation.
They worked together in the way they had developed, and underneath the working there was the thing she was no longer pretending she did not know, and it turned out that the two things could occupy the same afternoon without either one diminishing the other.
In the evening, when the group was gathering for the meal Ha-rin had decided to organize — she was becoming more certain by the day that Ha-rin was going to be extraordinary at whatever she eventually did — Shin-woo found her at the edge of the gathering and said, very quietly: "Ngươi đang nghĩ điều gì đó khác với bình thường."
"Tôi biết," she said.
"Ngươi không cập nhật mana-map từ ba tiếng."
"Tôi cập nhật nó sau đó," she said. "Nó ổn."
He looked at her for a moment.
"Nếu ngươi muốn nói về nó."
She thought about what she wanted to say. She thought about all the things she had decided today, in the quiet of the afternoon, in the space Ha-rin had created for her. She thought about whether today was the day to say any of them.
Not yet. But close.
"Tôi đang nghĩ về thứ gì đó không phải mana-map," she said. "Không phải một vấn đề cần giải quyết. Chỉ là thứ tôi đang ngồi cùng."
He was quiet for a moment.
"Tôi sẽ ở đây," he said. "Nếu ngươi muốn nói về nó sau này."
She looked at him — or oriented toward him, with the partial sight and the mana-overlay, reading the quality of his stillness and his instability at sixty-six and the particular quality of his attention on her.
"Tôi biết," she said. "Cảm ơn anh."
They went to find the rest of the group, and the evening was what it was, and underneath it the thing she knew continued to exist in the precise form it had always been.
