The plan for option two had been building for four days.
Do-yun had been working on the technical architecture of it — not with the Chronicler, who appeared intermittently and could not be scheduled, but alone, with the mana-sight's analytical function pushed into the theoretical range. She had been modeling the System's routing through the anchor, mapping the architecture the way she mapped Dungeon configurations: building from observable signature to probable structure to likely mechanism.
The work had produced something she thought might be actionable.
She presented it to Shin-woo in the afternoon, while the rest of the group was occupied with their own preparation tasks. She explained the mechanism as she had mapped it: the System's routing ran through the anchor's center-frequency, the particular mana-signature that corresponded to the connection's core. If both anchor points simultaneously generated a counter-frequency — the inverse of the routing's carrier wave — the routing would be disrupted without the anchor itself being touched.
Like jamming a signal without destroying the transmitter.
He asked technical questions. She answered them. He had been learning to read mana-signatures over the past weeks and the questions were precise, the product of someone who had been building understanding rather than simply receiving briefings.
Then he asked: "The cost for you in the process — if it works. And if it doesn't."
She thought about what to say.
"If it works," she said, "the counter-frequency generation requires sustained Resonance output at approximately the same intensity as the Convergence Dungeon. The cost is significant but within parameters I've managed before."
"And if it doesn't work."
"If the counter-frequency disrupts the routing but doesn't sever it completely — the System will recalibrate and we'll need to attempt again from a different configuration. Each attempt costs the same." She paused. "If the attempt partially disrupts the anchor's structure rather than the routing — the Chronicler's scenario, where the severance protocols are complicated by the structural integration — the fallback is option one. With the costs he described."
He was quiet for a moment.
"I don't want that to be the cost," he said.
She looked at him — or toward him, with the mana-sight running the full overlay. The quality of his stillness. The instability reading at sixty-nine, the lowest of the afternoon.
"I know," she said.
"The cost is yours to accept or not," he said. "I understand that. I'm telling you my position."
"Your position," she said, "is that you don't want me to pay it."
"Yes."
She thought about this — his position, stated clearly and without evasion. He had learned to state things clearly and without evasion over the past weeks. She had watched this learning happen with the same attention she gave everything.
"Both of those things can be true simultaneously," she said. "You not wanting it and it being my decision."
"Yes," he said. "I know that. I'm not trying to overrule your decision. I'm telling you what I feel about it." He paused. "You asked me, a few weeks ago, to give you the accurate version of things rather than the minimized version."
She had asked that. She had made it a condition of the revised agreement.
"The accurate version is that I don't want it," he said. "That's the full account."
She held this.
She thought about the particular form of the account — the acknowledgment that the decision was hers, followed by the honest statement of his feeling about the decision. This was the form of someone who had learned to distinguish between his preferences and his authority. She had watched that learning happen too.
"Cả hai điều đó có thể cùng đúng," she said.
"Có," he said.
They returned to the tactical plan. She continued explaining the mechanism, he continued asking questions, and the afternoon moved through its stages toward the preparation deadline.
At some point — she had been noting the time and the hour was late — she said: "Nếu option hai hoạt động và cổng đóng. Điều gì xảy ra sau đó?"
He looked at her.
She elaborated: "For you. Specifically. Your world's gate closes, the System loses access, Hanseo begins recovery. But you're here. What happens to you?"
He was quiet for a long moment.
"I don't know the mechanism for return," he said. "If the gate closes from this side — from the anchor side — the pathway back through the System's architecture is severed."
"Yes," she said. "The Chronicler said that was one outcome of option two." She paused. "Which means staying here, if you chose to, would not be temporary."
He looked at her with a quality of attention that she had been building a model for since she first identified it, the model still incomplete.
"I know," he said.
"And," she said, carefully, "what do you want?"
He was quiet for a long time.
"I want —" He stopped. "The accurate answer is complicated."
"I know complicated answers," she said. "Give me the accurate one."
He looked at the plan between them — the mana-diagrams, the routing maps, the option two architecture she had spent four days building.
"The world I came from," he said, "held nothing I needed to return to. The people who deserved better than what they received are dead. The people who gave them less are — present, but not a reason to return." He paused. "The answer that used to exist to the question of what I want — the answer of *return and address what happened* — is not what I want anymore." Another pause. "What I want now is —"
He stopped.
"Tell me the answer that exists now," she said.
"The answer that exists now," he said, slowly, "is this. Here. The group that has learned to function as a unit. The city that has been changed and is trying to recover. And —" He paused again. "The person who has been telling the true account of things when the false accounts were the only other option."
She breathed.
"That's the answer I want," she said. "Not the strategic answer. The answer I want."
His instability reading: sixty-six.
"Câu trả lời đó là câu trả lời tôi cũng muốn," he said.
He stood and walked to the window — not quickly, not away. The particular movement of someone who had said something significant and needed a moment before the next thing.
She let him have the moment.
In her overlay, the System notification arrived with the cold precision she had come to associate with its acknowledgment of things it found problematic: *Class S activation has entered final convergence phase. Estimated activation: 72 hours. All anchor-adjacent systems on heightened monitoring.*
She read it and said, to his back: "72 tiếng."
He turned from the window.
"72 tiếng," he confirmed.
They looked at each other — she with her imprecise sight and her mana-overlay, him with whatever he was seeing — across the plan for option two and the 72-hour countdown and the answer they had both said they wanted.
"Chúng ta nên tiếp tục chuẩn bị," she said.
"Có," he said.
They continued preparing.
