The notification arrived in his overlay alone.
Do-yun was aware that something had arrived — she could read the shift in his attention, the particular quality of someone receiving information that required processing, which was different from someone looking at something and different from someone thinking. She had learned to distinguish these states. She had also learned to not ask immediately when she identified them, because some information arrived and needed to be processed before it could be shared, and asking before processing was complete produced incomplete answers.
She waited.
His instability reading moved from seventy-four to eighty-one in approximately ninety seconds.
She kept waiting.
He did not tell her what the notification said. He put the device down and returned to the preparation work — the tactical review of the option two mechanism, the timing protocols, the position requirements for both anchor points to act simultaneously. She watched him work and tracked the reading: eighty-one, not changing, the static of something being held in place rather than the dynamic of something being managed toward resolution.
He was managing something. But it was not resolving.
The afternoon became the evening and the evening became the preparation for night and he still had not told her. She was not going to demand it. The decision of what to share and when was his. But she was watching the instability reading and the reading was not moving in the direction of someone who had processed something and set it aside.
At some point after dinner, when the group was in various stages of rest and preparation, she looked toward his position and said: "The notification from earlier."
He looked at her.
"You don't have to tell me," she said. "I can see the reading hasn't resolved and I wanted to — name that I see it."
He was quiet for a moment.
Then he stood and moved to the building's exterior — the side exit that opened onto the narrow service alley, the particular route he preferred when he needed air without full exposure. She followed.
The alley was dim in the post-Unreal Hanseo way — the lights functional but the quality of the light slightly wrong, the familiar colors slightly shifted. She leaned against the wall beside him and they looked at the narrow strip of altered sky above the alley's edge.
He said: "The System sent a proposal."
She waited.
"If I leave — now, before the Class S activates — the gate will not close completely but it will reduce significantly. The convergence will lose its primary anchor function. The Stages will decrease in frequency and intensity over the following weeks." He paused. "Hanseo won't fully recover. But it won't continue escalating."
She absorbed this.
"The cost," she said.
"I don't return," he said.
She had understood this from the moment he said *if I leave* but she let him say it anyway, because the full account required the full account.
"You understand what this is," she said.
"A proposal," he said.
"It's a frame," she said. "The System is using the language of choice to dress up a retreat as a sacrifice. It's giving you the option to remove yourself voluntarily so it can achieve what it's been trying to achieve — getting you out of Hanseo and out of the way of option two — without having to overpower you directly." She paused. "The framing makes it look like you're choosing to save people. But the outcome is identical to the outcome the System has been working toward since the beginning."
He was quiet.
"You identified this immediately," he said.
"Yes."
"And you think I haven't."
"I think you identified it and you're still considering it," she said. "Because the framing is effective. It maps onto something real — if you leave, the outcomes the System described are probably accurate. The reduction is real. The cost is real." She paused. "And you have spent many years in a version of the world where the correct thing for someone with your capacity was to remove yourself from situations where your presence created risk. That's a deeply learned pattern. The System knows it."
The alley was quiet around them. From somewhere in the building, she could hear the low sounds of the group settling for the night — Yu-jin's voice in the low register of someone giving final instructions, the sound of Ha-rin moving through the upper floor.
"If I stay," he said, "and option two fails —"
"Then we fail together," she said. "Instead of you succeeding alone by disappearing."
"That's not the way I would frame the success."
"I know," she said. "But look at the frame from the other direction. If you leave and the System achieves its goal — what it's been working toward for this entire convergence — have you succeeded? You've reduced the immediate harm. You've also given the System exactly what it needed to proceed to its next convergence with a cleaner architecture." She paused. "The pattern continues. The people in the next convergence have the same problem. The System has learned that this approach works."
He was quiet for a long moment.
"You're making an argument against leaving," he said.
"I'm making an argument against letting the System's framing determine your decision," she said. "There's a difference."
He looked at the narrow strip of sky.
"What's the argument for leaving," he said. "Give me the accurate version of both sides."
She thought about this.
"The argument for leaving," she said, "is that the reduction is real and it's immediate and it's certain. Option two is uncertain — the Chronicler said it has never been successfully accomplished. The harm-reduction of leaving is guaranteed. The harm-reduction of option two is probabilistic." She paused. "The argument against is everything I already said, plus: you have information and capability that option two requires. If you leave, option two is not possible. We can attempt other approaches but they're less likely to succeed. The probabilistic case for a permanent solution is substantially better with you here than without you."
"And the personal argument," he said.
She was quiet for a moment.
"The personal argument," she said, "is that you've spent twenty-seven years being told that the correct choice was to make yourself smaller, to remove yourself, to defer to others' definitions of what you were. The System is offering you a choice that fits that exact pattern. And you deserve — the word I would use is deserve — to make a choice that doesn't follow that pattern." She paused. "That's not a tactical argument. It's a — values argument. About what kind of story this should be."
He turned to look at her.
"Câu chuyện của tôi chưa kết thúc," he said.
The phrase in her voice, from years ago, in the darkness when she had not known he could hear her.
"Không," she said. "Chưa."
They stood in the alley in the altered dark of Hanseo and she did not say anything else and he did not say anything else and the night moved forward toward the next morning and whatever it would hold.
She did not know what he decided that night.
She went to sleep eventually — the body's requirements overriding the vigilance she wanted to maintain — and when she woke at three in the morning his room was empty. She tracked his mana-signature: moving, stable, heading west.
He had gone to the merged territory.
She lay in the dark for a moment, tracking the reading — sixty-nine, stable — and thought about what she wanted to do about this.
She thought: *he's at the cổng.*
She thought: *he hasn't stepped through it yet.*
She got up.
