I woke to the specific, disorienting quiet of a room that had decided, overnight, to stop being a crime scene and start being a bedroom.
The light coming through the high, narrow windows had gone from the guttering orange of the ritual chamber's dying wards to something paler, colder, more honest — the grey of an actual dawn in an actual place I was apparently going to have to learn the geography of. I lay still for a long moment before moving, the way you lie still in an unfamiliar hotel room before your body remembers where the bathroom is, and catalogued what had changed since the previous night. Bed, empty of its occupant. Door, closed. Room, silent in the specific way that meant I was alone in it, or believed I was, which were not always the same thing here.
I tested the boundary first, because a negotiator's first instinct in any new room is always to find the exits, and mine, it turned out, had been quietly redefined overnight into something closer to a leash.
I made it perhaps six feet from the bench before the pull started — not pain, not yet, but a wrongness, a tightening at the base of whatever passed for my sternum in this body, like a held breath insisting on being let go. I stopped, tested it again more slowly, walked the boundary the way you'd walk a property line, and found it closed in a rough, uneven circle. Twenty feet, maybe. Thirty at the widest point, where the room's own walls happened to align with whatever the rite had drawn. Past that: not agony, but something that promised agony was available if I insisted.
I filed it, the way I filed everything now, under known constraints, and made a mental note that any escape plan requiring more than thirty feet of separation from Kaelen von Draven was no longer, strictly speaking, a plan.
It was, I noted with the same detached professionalism I'd have applied to any other operational limitation, an unusually elegant piece of design for a magic system I didn't yet understand. A leash long enough to allow the illusion of independence, short enough to guarantee that independence never became a genuine option. Whoever had built the Sanctioned Familiar Rite centuries ago had clearly understood something about control that most wardens of actual hostages never quite grasped: the leash works better when the one wearing it forgets, most of the time, that it's there at all.
I spent the remaining minutes before the door opened doing the only other productive thing available to a body with no hands: cataloguing the room itself, in more detail than the previous night's adrenaline had allowed. A writing desk near the window, its surface bare except for a single unlit lamp and a stack of correspondence weighted down by what looked, from this angle, like a dagger repurposed as a paperweight. A wardrobe built into the far wall, doors closed. No mirror anywhere, which struck me as an odd omission in a room otherwise built for a man who could presumably afford any luxury he wanted — until I considered how a man drowning in paranoia might feel about a reflective surface capable of showing him something standing behind his own shoulder that wasn't actually there.
I filed that, too. Absence of mirrors: possible symptom, not decoration.
The door opened before I'd finished testing the eastern edge of the circle.
---
The woman who entered was young, dark-haired, dressed in the practical grey of household staff rather than the finery I'd have guessed for anyone permitted this close to an emperor's private chambers. She was carrying a folded stack of linens and a covered tray, moving with the brisk, downcast efficiency of someone who had learned, specifically and personally, that eye contact in this wing of the palace was a liability.
She saw me before she saw that the bed was empty, and every ounce of that practiced efficiency evaporated in under a second.
The tray hit the floor. Not dramatically — she caught most of it, years of household training overriding fresh terror by pure reflex — but her hand went to her collarbone in the universal gesture of a heart trying to climb back down out of a throat, and she took two full steps backward before some deeper instinct told her that backing away from an emperor's private chambers without permission was its own kind of dangerous.
"I didn't — " she started, to no one, to the room, possibly to whatever god was meant to be listening in a place like this. "I didn't know His Majesty had — that there was a — "
She didn't finish the sentence. She didn't need to. I watched her eyes flick from me to the door and back, doing the same threat calculus I'd have done in her position: was the fox dangerous, was it a trap, was it something she'd be blamed for regardless of what it actually was. I held still, the same stillness I'd used the night before, and watched her decide — correctly, if for the wrong reasons — that stillness from an animal that size probably meant it wasn't hunting her.
What struck me more than her fear was the specific shape of it. She wasn't afraid the way you're afraid of an unfamiliar animal. She was afraid the way you're afraid of being caught having seen something you weren't supposed to see. In a palace where the emperor's chambers were, apparently, this thoroughly walled off from the ordinary staff, a fox curled on a bench near his bed wasn't just strange. It was information. And information, in a court running on the particular fuel of Kaelen von Draven's paranoia, was the single most dangerous thing a low-ranking maid could be caught holding.
She was still deciding whether to flee or apologize when the inner door opened and made the decision for her.
---
Kaelen didn't look surprised to see either of us. That, more than anything, told me what I needed to know about how mornings usually went in this wing.
"Leave the tray," he said. Two words of instruction folded into one flat command, delivered without heat, without cruelty, without anything at all — the particular emptiness of a man who had long since stopped expending feeling on people whose names he didn't bother to learn. "And say nothing of what you saw here."
"Yes, Majesty." She was already moving, already gone, the door closing behind her with the soft, practiced silence of someone who had learned that even the sound of a door could be read as insolence in the wrong mood.
He did not look at me. He crossed the room, poured water from a pitcher I hadn't noticed the night before, drank it standing, and set the cup down with more force than the gesture required. His jaw was tight in the way I'd already catalogued as depletion rather than anger, though I revised the ratio slightly this morning — closer to fifty-fifty now, with a night's sleep and a fresh day's suspicion layered back on top of the exhaustion.
I understood, watching him ignore me with the exact same total, practiced indifference he'd shown the maid, that I had not been granted any special status overnight. I was simply another object in the room that required managing, filed somewhere between furniture and inconvenience, and the coldness I'd have taken personally on my first day in any ordinary negotiation was, here, just the ambient temperature of the man. He treated everyone this way. That was, itself, useful data — a baseline against which any future warmth, however small, would register as significant.
I had spent eleven years learning to read the difference between a man's public face and the thing underneath it. This morning, watching Kaelen dress in silence, jaw set, eyes doing that particular restless sweep of a room he'd already checked twice, I understood that with this man, the public face and the thing underneath it were separated by almost nothing at all. Whatever softness existed in him had been worn down to a thread so thin it barely registered as a variable.
Which meant, professionally speaking, that the thread was worth more than gold.
---
He did not leave me behind.
I understood this less as an act of attachment than as a security decision, the same instinct that had made him lock the anomaly in his bedroom rather than order it burned: an unclassified variable close to him was safer, in his calculus, than an unclassified variable somewhere out of sight. He lifted me without ceremony — one hand, the same rough competence he'd have used to move a ledger — and settled me against his forearm as he left the chamber, and I understood, from the careful way he adjusted his stride afterward, that he had already, unconsciously, begun accounting for the extra weight in his movements.
The corridor beyond his chambers told me more about Solaris in ninety seconds than the ritual chamber had told me in an entire night. Gold-veined marble gave way to darker stone the further we walked from his private wing, and the density of guards increased with a precision that felt almost mathematical — two at every intersection, four at the doors flanking what I guessed was a council chamber, all of them straightening at his approach with the particular rigidity of men who had learned that a slouched posture in this hallway could end a career, or worse.
They looked at me. Every one of them looked at me, and every one of them looked away again a half-second too fast, the specific tell of soldiers who had been trained not to react to their emperor's decisions regardless of how strange those decisions became.
The room he brought me into was smaller than I'd expected for what turned out to be a council session — a long table, six men and one woman seated around it in robes indicating rank I couldn't yet decode, and an atmosphere so thick with unspoken calculation that I felt it before I heard a single word spoken. Kaelen set me down on the table's edge near his own seat without explanation, without acknowledgment, as though placing a paperweight, and the entire room adjusted its behavior around that single, wordless act in real time — eyes flicking to me, decisions being quietly revised about how freely to speak.
I understood, watching it happen, that he had just told this room something without saying a word: I do not need to explain myself to you. It was, I noted, an extremely efficient use of an object he hadn't yet decided the purpose of.
---
The man three seats down had a tell I would have caught in my sleep back when sleep was still something I did in a body with a pulse of its own.
He was older than most of the others, silver-templed, dressed in a deep grey that read as understated wealth rather than deference, and he spoke with the smooth, unhurried cadence of a man who had never once in his life worried about being interrupted. His subject was trade routes — dull, procedural, the kind of agenda item designed to bore a room into inattention — but every third sentence carried a small, almost imperceptible pause before a specific category of word: numbers. Figures. Quantities.
A man who hesitates before numbers is a man reciting figures he has adjusted from the true ones, recently enough that the false version hasn't fully replaced the real one in his own head yet. I had built entire negotiations around less.
Kaelen was listening with the visible patience of a man three sentences from losing it entirely — jaw tight, one hand flat on the table in a stillness that read, to me now, as barely restrained; the Blood Curse's damage didn't discriminate between real threats and administrative tedium when it came to who it made him distrust. I felt the specific texture of his agitation rise through whatever thread connected us, sharper now that I'd had a full night and a morning to start recognizing its shape, and I understood, watching the silver-templed man's mouth continue moving, that within another minute Kaelen was going to do something loud, and public, and almost certainly disproportionate to a man who was, as far as I could tell, guilty of nothing worse than modest embezzlement.
Disproportionate reactions in front of six witnesses were not, whatever this man's actual guilt, good statecraft.
I had exactly one tool. I used it.
---
I tapped my claw against the back of Kaelen's hand — once, deliberate, the smallest gesture I could make and still call it a signal rather than an accident.
It meant nothing to him yet. It couldn't have. I had invented the vocabulary an hour ago and used it exactly once before, in a moment loud enough that he might easily have missed the correlation. But bodies remember patterns before minds catch up to them, and I was betting — the way I'd bet on smaller, stranger things across eleven years of rooms with worse odds — that some old soldier's instinct in him would read an unexpected touch as a flag worth noticing, even without understanding why.
He didn't look at me. But his hand went still under mine, and the sentence he'd been about to say — I could feel the shape of it forming, sharp and final, the kind of sentence that ends careers or worse — didn't come.
Instead: "Continue," he said. Flat. Controlled. Buying himself, I understood with something that felt almost like professional pride, exactly the kind of pause I'd have recommended to any client on the edge of an irreversible decision.
The silver-templed man continued. Two sentences later, his hesitation-before-numbers pattern repeated, clearer now that I knew to expect it, and I watched something in Kaelen's stillness shift from barely-restrained fury into a colder, more useful kind of attention — the attention of a man deciding to investigate quietly instead of punish loudly.
I did not know, in that moment, whether he understood what he had just done, or why. I understood only that it had worked, and that working was, for now, the entire job description.
The silver-templed man continued through two more sentences of his report, and I used the pause to study the rest of the table — the six other faces, none of whom had reacted visibly to the small drama at the emperor's elbow, though I noticed one, a broad-shouldered man in a general's braid seated near the far end, glance at me with an attention that read less like suspicion and more like private amusement quickly suppressed. I filed him separately from the others: someone who had, perhaps, already formed his own theories about the strange creature that had appeared in the emperor's chambers overnight, and who found something to enjoy in watching the rest of the room fail to notice what he'd apparently already guessed.
I would come to learn his name eventually — Commander Rhysten Vale, head of the palace guard, a man whose loyalty to Kaelen predated the throne itself and who therefore afforded himself small liberties, like amusement, that no one else in the room would have risked. For now he was simply a data point: not every set of eyes in this palace watched me with fear.
---
The session ended without incident. No public accusation, no disproportionate punishment, no witnesses carrying home a story about an emperor losing his composure over trade figures. Whatever quiet investigation Kaelen intended to open into the silver-templed man's numbers would happen later, privately, on his own schedule — which was, I understood, precisely the outcome that served him best.
He didn't thank me. I hadn't expected him to; gratitude required a framework he didn't yet have for whatever I was. But as the room emptied and the guards fell back into their corridor rhythm and he lifted me again to carry me back through the gold-veined dark toward his wing, he did something that hadn't happened the night before, or that morning, or at any point I'd catalogued so far.
He looked at me. Directly. For longer than the half-second his suspicion usually allotted anything he hadn't yet classified.
"What," he said, quietly enough that no guard in the corridor could have heard it, "did you just do?"
It was not an accusation. It wasn't quite a question either, in the sense of expecting an answer — he knew, better than anyone in this palace, that I had no voice to give him one. It was something closer to a man talking to himself in the one place he'd found recently where talking to himself didn't feel entirely insane, testing a hypothesis out loud because the alternative was carrying it alone.
I held his gaze, the way I'd learned to hold it, and said nothing, because saying nothing was, for the moment, the only language sophisticated enough to answer him honestly.
He didn't ask again. But he carried me the rest of the way with his hand curled loosely around my ribs instead of my scruff, and I understood, cataloguing the difference the way I catalogued everything now, that some new variable had entered his calculations — not trust, not yet, nothing so soft or so fast.
Just a question. Asked, and left open, and not yet answered.
Back in his chambers, he set me down on the bench with more care than the gesture strictly required and stood for a moment looking at nothing in particular, one hand still curled loosely where I'd been resting against it, as if testing whether the sensation lingered. Then, apparently deciding he'd spent enough of the morning on a question with no immediate answer, he crossed to the writing desk and began working through the stack of correspondence I'd catalogued earlier, the dagger-paperweight set aside with the same unthinking competence of a man who handled dangerous objects the way other people handled pens.
I watched him work for the better part of an hour — reading, signing, occasionally muttering a name under his breath in a tone that suggested filing rather than fondness — and understood that whatever this day had cost either of us, it had also, quietly, without either of us marking the moment, taught him something new: that I could be trusted, at minimum, to sit still in a room with him while he worked, without requiring the constant vigilance he extended to almost everyone else who shared his air.
It was, I thought, exactly where a negotiation was supposed to be after its second real exchange. Not resolved. Just no longer stalled.
